No one disputes that successful drafts are the key to sustained success in the National Football League.
No one, that is, except for George Allen. In building up the Rams and Redskins (now Commanders), Allen craved veterans. He had no hesitation trading draft picks for established players. He ended up with a bust in Canton and a .712 winning percentage that ranks fourth in league history.
But Allen remains an outlier. He turned things around in a hurry in Los Angeles and Washington back in the day, but those days have passed. In the modern-era NFL, you can’t overcome lousy drafts. (more…)

Jason Licht’s No-Brainer Pick

You’d better believe he has Jason Licht’s full attention.
In overseeing the past 10 drafts for the Bucs, Licht has shown a knack for hitting on offensive linemen. He overcame a sluggish start at the position, selecting Kadeem Edwards and Kevin Pamphile in the fifth round of his inaugural 2014 draft.
Edwards never played a game for Tampa Bay and Pamphile was a pedestrian 2-year starter at left guard before Ali Marpet wisely found a home there in 2018. Those were two misses, yet hardly mistakes worth noting because few fifth-round picks make any noise at the next level.
Licht hit it big the following year, grabbing Donovan Smith and Marpet in the second round. Caleb Benenoch, taken in the fifth round in 2016, was released by Calgary of the CFL last summer after a nondescript NFL career.

In a perfect world, Carlton Davis would be credited with one final takeaway for the Buccaneers.
In trading Davis to the Lions two weeks ago, Jason Licht accumulated an extra pick in the third round of next month’s draft. That’s called quality ammo — and Licht needs to be ready and willing to use that draft capital if things fall his way before Tampa Bay’s No. 26 selection in the opening round.
While it’s evident the Bucs have holes to fill at edge rusher and the interior of their offensive line, there’s a chance one of the cleanest prospects in the draft makes it through the first half of the first round. (more…)
