They said he was nuts.

On this day 30 years ago, Malcom Glazer coughed up nearly $200 million to purchase the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For some, that was considered an outrageous amount to spend on a franchise that hadn’t been to the postseason in 12 years.

Tampa Stadium was antiquated and half-empty while the Bucs were annual strangers to prime-time games.

Some fans that did show up in previous years came adorned with bags over their heads to protest the team’s irrelevance and attempt to shame former owner Hugh Culverhouse, who was viewed as frugal and indifferent. (more…)

From a nightmare to sweet dreams, all in 30 minutes.

The Bucs rebounded from a sloppy, uninspired opening half to overwhelm the Saints 21-3 in the final two quarters Sunday, earning a fourth consecutive division title behind another stirring late-season surge.

In the process, Mike Evans ran down history with a consequential 9-yard catch in the final seconds of a 27-19 triumph. It would have been prudent for Baker Mayfield to end the game by taking a knee, but thousands of fans and every member of the organization would have bemoaned the end of a historic 1,000-yard streak by a beloved Buccaneer.

Jason Licht was waiting for Evans outside Tampa Bay’s locker room and their post-game embrace was long and emotional, knowing the Bucs accomplished their twin goals. (more…)

That’s the way you handle your business.

To give themselves a chance at a fourth consecutive NFC South title, the Bucs had to do their own part by beating the Panthers. They stomped Carolina, handing former offensive coordinator Dave Canales a stinging 48-14 setback, matching the franchise record for most points scored in a home game.

It’s all about the streaks.

Where shall we start? How about Mike Evans? He entered Sunday’s matchup needing to average 102.5 yards in the final four games to keep his 1,000-yard streak alive.

With 159 yards and two TDs on his nine catches against the Chargers, Evans now needs to average 83.7 yards against the Cowboys, Panthers and Saints to reach 1,000 once again. That’s a far more manageable number for the future Hall of Famer.

Then we come to the strange case of Jamel Dean, who caught a Justin Herbert floater. That set off a celebration with teammates who perhaps had no idea that Dean had gone 37 consecutive games without an interception.

With those two streaks out of the way, we come to the most important one of all — a four-game run that lifted Tampa Bay to 8-6 and guarantees the Bucs will remain atop the NFC South for at least another week.

This 40-17 beatdown was a huge victory, but it wasn’t a shocking upset because the Bucs were only a slight underdog. What WAS shocking was how thoroughly Tampa Bay embarrassed a solid opponent in its own stadium, using a second-half blitz to send Charger fans back to La La Land wondering what they had just witnessed.

For the second time this season, both on the road, the Bucs won the second half 27-0, erasing deficits at New Orleans and at Los Angeles. (more…)
