Schiano Doesn’t Deny Freeman Now No. 3

September 27th, 2013

DFresh off the news from Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, that backlash to Josh Freeman’s team-unauthorized interview with BSPN last night will lead him to be deactivated for Sunday’s game, Bucs commander Greg Schiano dodged a chance to deny the report during his daily press conference with the local pen and mic club Friday.

When asked by Stroud about the unauthorized interview and as a result, will Freeman be placed on the inactive list, Schiano refused to answer.

“I understand the question and I appreciate it,” Schiano began. “I feel this [Freeman benching] has become a focus all week. I am not going there. Ninety minutes before the game I will announce the inactive list. I am done discussing that other stuff. Let’s go win a game.”

When Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune pointedly followed-up asking if Freeman was still a backup, Schiano replied, “Again, 90 minutes before [kickoff] I will name inactives.”

Schiano easily could have killed the rumor by saying, “No, he is our No. 2.” (then again, Schiano was adamant that Freeman was the starter on Monday). So at least Schiano is thinking about it or has already made a decision to effectively keep Freeman out of uniform Sunday.

If not, Schiano could have quashed the report with one word. “No.”

He didn’t.

As for the nonsense about grumbling how the Freeman issue has been the focus all week. Come on! A guy the Bucs traded up for in the first round, a guy who fans were told for four years was the team’s savior — “it’s all about No. 5” — has been benched three weeks into the season, what does Schiano expect? He cannot be that naive. This is the biggest Bucs story since Schiano himself was hired, maybe bigger.

Would Schiano rather have the fourth estate focus about how Schiano is 1-9 in his last 10 games as an NFL head coach?

I’m going to assume that Freeman will be inactive. He’s a distraction at this point in time. The team needs to think about playing and getting their first win, not about mopey mcFreeman on the sidelines.

  2. Couch Fan Says:

I am really shocked. I hated Freeman as a QB. But I never EVER thought this guy would be a distraction of this magnitude. I always thought he was a team first guy. I agree just cut his @ss and be done with it… it’s not worth it anymore.

  3. Sharon Says:

    He’s done in the nfl

  4. Splengo Says:

Just cut the guy for crying out loud. He has a guaranteed contract and the Bucs have got to pay him. This drama can’t be good for the locker room. As long as he’s there the media is going to keep bringing him up. When Glennon loses a game, they’re going to ask if he thought about going back to Freeman. Schiano you created this mess, now clean it up.

  5. MadMax Says:

Yup! When 2 year olds dont get their way, they throw their little temper tantrums…..and I really hate seeing that from him. I saw his arrogance in that interview. Oh well, let it be. Just cut him….DONE!

ITS A NEW DAY IN TAMPA BAY!!!!!

Tear those Cards up D, and shred their D apart O…..(I think Glennons gonna bring it)

Im F N FIRED UP!!! GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  6. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Schiano has to minimize what he says, Joe. He has the chemistry of the rest of the team to think about.

You aside, it amazes me how a national media that claimed this would happen all along is making such a fuss about it because it happened a week earlier than they thought it would.

Schiano is getting attacked for doing what he felt was right.

  7. Mr. Patrick Says:

You don’t want somebody you are trying to trade get hurt. Cleveland called, offered some Brats

  8. Ricardo Esteban Says:

why would they give him the courtesy of cutting him at this point.

Can’t they just bar him from the facility for behavior unbecoming of a buc or something?

Send a message. GTFO and we own you if you want to play this game.

They gave him his shot and he blew it.

Watch, when Glennon rips up the Cards the freemanites will be crying “why didn’t Sully play that offense for free?”!!!!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAA!

    see ya free

  9. Joe Says:

Schiano has to minimize what he says, Joe. He has the chemistry of the rest of the team to think about.

So benching your starting quarterback is building team chemistry?

Joe doesn’t quibble with the decision at all. But Schiano has now turned into Col. Nathan Jessup. Schiano could have denied the report by saying one word. “No.” Or at least saying, “I haven’t decided.”

Instead he’s trying to bully his way through.

Whitey Herzog told Joe once the best advice he ever got (from Casey Stengel) was not to jerk around reporters. Because in bad times, the fourth estate will buy you two years. Playing games with them does no good and God help you if you turn them against you.

  10. JamesrunningWilder Says:

Why is Coach Schiano’s Decision to Not Discuss Freeman and his Status any Further? He Respectfully acknowledged the validity of the question asked but deemed that Freeman has taken up TOO MUCH Focus this week leading up to a Game that they NEED to Win and Freeman will Obviously Not be a Part of. It’s Disrespectful to the OTHER Players on the Team to have So Much Focus on a Guy who will have ZERO Role in Sunday’s Game. I can’t really blame Coach for that. Shouldn’t the Local Pen and Mic Club be more Focused on Freeman for Declining Their Interviews INSTEAD OF the Guy who’s trying to Prepare the Team to Beat the Cards? Sometimes I think that The Media Creates MORE Distractions for the Very Team they’re Covering. This does Not Help the Team, this Only serves to Undermine the Focus of the Team on the Task at Hand… Beating the Cards. Of course, this is just my opinion.

  11. ctord Says:

This whole thing goes from bad to worse everyday. At least we dont have sam bradford. lol. I really hope Glennon does well.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Joe says
“So benching your starting quarterback is building team chemistry?”

What I mean is because Freeman has so many friends on the team, he’s smart to keep from saying too much. He could alienate players.

I know that doesn’t sit well with ANY media. But it’s smart.

  13. JamesrunningWilder Says:

    ***Correction***
Why is Coach Schiano’s Decision to Not Discuss Freeman and his Status any Further a Big Deal or So Wrong?

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Schiano could have denied the report by saying one word. “No.” Or at least saying, “I haven’t decided.”

    —————————–

But we all know how secretive Schiano is. He’s not going to tell the media anything until he absolutely has to. We all know this… most have accepted it. I actually prefer him to keep team business private… Why so shocked?

  15. Rahb Says:

    “We have proven methods”
~ Gregory Schiano Ex-Rutgers Football Coach

Yeah, sure! This whole thing has been mismanaged from the Day that Gap toothed buzzcut MFer was hired.

Wow…..he spoke without our permission after we Napalmed his Career! We don’t need a guy contradicting our Lies!!!

SMH – Lets move on from Josh Freeman!! Oh..oh oh…Ignore that Guy Pictured on you Tickets He Doesn’t Exist.

RELEASE JOSHUA, Why didn’t the Buccaneers just do that Monday Morning?

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Also, keep in mind as well that the media has twisted and read into everything Schiano has said in the past. Take his claim early in the week that Freeman was the starting quarterback.

He was. Schiano did not lie or mislead. Freeman was the starting quarterback until he wasn’t.

It’s not like he could just say, “We’re taking a look at things. Let me get back to you.”

That would not have been fair to Freeman at all…to allow him to find out through the media.

So a lot of this is blown out of proportion by the media. As usual.

  17. Joe Says:

It’s not like he could just say, “We’re taking a look at things. Let me get back to you.”

    Why not?

  18. JamesrunningWilder Says:

Joe said… “Schiano could have denied the report by saying one word. “No.” Or at least saying, “I haven’t decided.”

…I understand that line of thinking Joe but you know that that response, especially the second one you suggested, would’ve been followed up by Another Question for more Detail.

  19. D-Rome Says:

Schiano is handling the media like Bill Belichick does. That only flies in New England because he has the hardware and wins to back it up. Schiano has none of that at any level.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

As to Freeman’s interview…players do not have to get permission to do interviews every time. That’s silly.

And to top it off, Other than a few sentences, no one but Freeman and the interviewer even knows what he said. Everyone is assuming Josh said something that will shine a bad light on the team. ESPN isn’t going to deny it because they want people to watch on Sunday, when it airs.

There may be no reason at all for Freeman to be punished, but the media is trying to convince people there is.

  21. Joe Says:

So a lot of this is blown out of proportion by the media. As usual.

Blown out of proportion??? If anyone blew anything out of proportion it is Schiano.

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Joe says
    “Why not?”

I answered that: “That would not have been fair to Freeman at all…to allow him to find out through the media.”

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    I respectfully disagree, Joe.

  24. Joe Says:

As to Freeman’s interview…players do not have to get permission to do interviews every time. That’s silly.

Apparently, you don’t know Schiano’s rules, which Freeman Twittered out himself last week.

The NFL — much less the Bucs — greatly frown on unauthorized interviews.

Joe cannot tell you how many times NFL players turned down an interview request telling Joe he had to go through the team’s media relations office first

  25. MadMax Says:

These are Million Dollar Makers, Shakers, and Takers in this league….its called “poker face”……get over it…..

  26. admin Says:

“That would not have been fair to Freeman at all…to allow him to find out through the media.”

Yeah, like Schiano (or Dominik) never talks to his players outside of the practice fields. smh

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m sure there were also exceptions as well. Spur of the moment interviews, even if they are short ones, happen all the time.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

“Apparently, you don’t know Schiano’s rules, which Freeman Twittered out himself last week.”

Yes Joe I remember that. It was an odd tweet though if I remember right. What was the question asked again?

  29. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t want to get banned, so I’ll just restate I disagree with you and drop it. That way we can still be best friends forever 😉

  30. Mike jackson Says:

Schiano is such a prick. When he is fired at the end of the year, he will replace Lee Bennett and Ray Perkins as the most hated coach to ever walk sideline in TB

  31. RCS Says:

The problem the media has with Schiano is tbat they were so use to Rah going out and spilling his guts about everything team related. The media is already bashing Schiano on everything he does so why should he be so open with them.
And I see the media is giving Josh a pass on giving an unauthorized interview and creating more drama.

Think about this… what happens if Glennon does get hurt Sunday yesterday Josh was #2 and it could still be a winable game. Now that Josh will probably not be active is Orlasky and that give the team no hope. And it all changed with Josh putting himself ahead of the team. But no one’s mentioning thay.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Was there a practice today? If so, anyone know if Williams and Jackson participated?

  33. bucfanjeff Says:

Something stinks here and, while it’s easy to point a finger at Freeman, I think a lot of this Freeman behavior is a result of Schiano. To make Josh inactive because he did an unauthorized interview is f*cking silly. So, what if your “best chance to win” gets hurt, or MIGHTLY struggles? Then your “best chance to win” is now Orlovsky?

W.T.F. is going on at OBP?

I get a feeling a lot of sh!t is going to come out and hit the fan REAL soon.

    Dig Joe. Dig.

  34. BirdDoggers Says:

It’s clear Freeman doesn’t want any part of this organization. Dodging the local media to go behind the organizations back to do an unauthorized interview. It looks like Freeman is taking a jab at his micro-managing control freak (soon to be former) coach. This must have really irked Schiano and his ego.

Freeman is responsible for his actions and in my opinion, should’ve taken the high road. Schiano has some responsibility too. He would be better off treating the media with more tact. He might be friends with Belichick but he hasn’t earned the right to act like him.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“So benching your starting quarterback is building team chemistry?”

Yes….Joe…..Benching your quarteback is building team chemistry….because the mixture with Freeman was horrible.

This attack on Schiano born out of his rigid style of dealing with the media…along with the age-old controversy creating media copy….Imagine how boring it would be without all this.

My prediction is that Schiano will eventually succeed and I believe the Glazers agree. He needs to continue to change the culture & than means changing players….

I don’t think he planned on losing those first two games the way we did….no of us did. That has changed the dynamics here.

  36. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

It may be smart to make him inactive in Glennons first game. If Glennon stinks, Schiano would almost be forced to put in Freeman, and that would create even more controversy.

I’m not saying having Freeman for a backup in case of injury would not be better. Just saying that may be the thinking. I’m guessing though.

  37. Hyperryd Says:

Why would Coach give the Cards insight into who is or is not playing Sunday? That is why they don’t say for sure who is playing on Sunday until 90 minutes before the game, so the competition has to prepare for everybody instead of focusing on who is actually playing against them. That is just like any other week. The media is making a big deal out of it because they need to know now, to sell more media!

  38. bucbucbuc Says:

Schiano has got to go. This is unbelievable.

We can’t even focus on the game we have each Sunday because of the unnecessary drama he’s created. This drama is ALL on schiano. Our team is a joke ALL because of Schiano. Freeman is acting out BECAUSE of schiano. Everything has been mismanaged. Everything has been miscommunicated. The franchise is in a complete WRECK. Fire this clown already. I want to read about our opponent and how we’re preparing, but it’s impossible to do so because of all this drama surrounding the team.

  39. IamTheOne Says:

Any thing less than 8 wins this year, I want the coaches head.

    This is a performance league.

He will have had his try. No excuses.

  40. Joe Says:

Why would Coach give the Cards insight into who is or is not playing Sunday? That is why they don’t say for sure who is playing on Sunday until 90 minutes

So you are saying this whole benching of Freeman is an elaborate ruse to make the Cardinals think Freeman is starting???

Man, you need to take a break from watching reruns of 24.

  41. RCS Says:

So Freeman hurts the team by doing something he knows is against the rules and its Schiano’s fault

Hahahahahaha so of you fans are just ridiculous !

  42. BucoBruce Says:

Pull a Meshawn and tell him he is not needed and we have GLENNON who is going to be the next Brady or better.

  43. Goodolebucfan Says:

This whole QB change has been plained since the end of last year. When coach Schiano said we need competition at qb at the end of the year. Later at the scouting combine he said the same thing. Then the drafted Glennon who he has been chasing since his days at Rutgers. Then he states Josh is his starter. But later changes it to Glennon can win the job. Preseason comes and Glennon gets all the work even tho Schiano wants to get our offense in sync. Let Freeman take on the Ryan brother defenses and his mentor Billacheat so his boy Glennon don’t look bad then announces a Qb change with the easier team coming up. Schiano is a micromanager he decides what food they eat and what temp the room is kept at. Tell me this wasn’t all planned out from the start. This teams offense is predicated on running the ball then throwing the longball(low percentage).
So if you take a Qb not the most accurate then his completion percentage will drop more. A good coach would of built his offense around his QB not try to make his Qb run the coaches offense. This coach tried to put a square peg in a round hole. You can blame Josh and he deserves some blame but I blame the coach more. Glennon is very much like Josh and less mobile so if they don’t run the ball a lot and throw high percentage passes I expect the same outcome. The fans chased Gruden out of here because he talked out of both sides of his mouth but at least he could coach and knew how to delegate (ie let monty coach the defense). Schiano has yet to show Tampa Bay he knows how to Head coach a team yes he improved the defense with pro-bowl free agents but the rest of the team is not coached well tons of talent on offense but same sorry game plan run on first down pass the long ball on second and throw the short pass 3 yards short of the first down on third sound about right?

  44. ATLBucsFan Says:

Schiano answered the question. Joe and others apparently didn’t like the answer. So what. I know, let’s roast the coach for not cooperating with the media! And Joe, as you referred in your article, the media won’t treat him well. That’s what it is all about huh? F the team and its success, let’s just get our questions answered to our satisfaction. Followed by another question for more elaboration. Followed by another question for more elaboration. Followed by another question for more elaboration. I think Schiano knows he is in hot water and would prefer to minimize distractions to himself and his players.

  45. Ben Says:

Worst headline I’ve ever seen on this site. At least you posted the entire quote and revealed the real truth, though (Schiano is sick of talking about it).

  46. Hyperryd Says:

No, I am saying the competition doesn’t need to know who is #2 behind a rookie in his first game. They would still gameplan for one or the other.

Why should Coach say. He has zero obligation to do so. If you asked last week who was the #2 for this last sunday, I’m sure Coach’s answer would have been the same. This week it is “creating drama” because everybody “needs” to know. For the actual game this week, the Cardinals don’t need to know, so therefore everybody else doesn’t need to know. Otherwise more drama is created because we changed our rules just for this week. That doesn’t build trust in the locker room either.

  47. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

If Schiano has any sense at all then Freeman will never even get a chance at seeing the field again. Even if Glennon is injured. It would not be worth the fan uprise if he plays well or gets a win. He should never suit up as a Buc again.

Freeman has flamed out here. Whether that was his own doing or the coaches is yet to be answered. I am sure that it is somewhere in the middle.

Now, my only hope is that Glennon is either ridiculously good or just awful. Anything in between would mean that we won’t have a very good QB to start the 2014 season.

I can’t believe I have been waiting since December for THIS. Unless Glennon turns out to be amazing then season will be a MASSIVE disappointment.

I really believe some of the concerns with the offense extend well beyond Freeman. Longest distance to go on third down in the league is not something Glennon can, should, or will fix. I foresee even more runs on first and second down than before which could very well mean EVEN LONGER third downs.

Glennon certainly does need “a football miracle” this Sunday.

  48. Patrick Says:

Schiano is now the biggest asshole in the NFL. Congrats coach! Freeman got benched. I agree with ya on that. But who cares if he did a stinkin interview with ESPN……..so now you place him on the inactive list? Schiano is a dictator.

  49. passthebuc Says:

His answer was consistent. The movers and shakers of the bucs new this question would come up and I’ll bet it was a group decision on how to respond.

  50. Justin Says:

I’m no Schiano supporter, but the guy is in a no win situation answering questions about Josh Freeman. I get the sense our Tampa reporters are upset Freeman has not said anything and that he gave ESPN a face to face before them.

Guaranteed his agent orchestrated that one. Josina Anderson had to fly in for that sit down. Freeman bolted on you guys yesterday to go get his makeup done. You mad Joe?

  51. RBellBuc Says:

    Joe says, \
    \
Would Schiano rather have the fourth estate focus about how Schiano is 1-9 in his last 10 games as an NFL head coach?
    ————————————————————————

    \
Trust me when i say this. The 4th estate will eventually. They are diligent and work on one smear campaign at a time. As soon as the Freeman story dries up, they’ll start working on Schiano again until he throws out another human shield, and deflects the story into a different direction.

  52. Bobby M. Says:

WHY DOESN’T JOSH GET THE #2 SPOT FOR THE GAME??? Maybe because in the NFL, particularly in this situation, in order to trade a player, you need them to be healthy. Especially if said player is in a contract year with a base salary of $8 million, with $5 million remaining for this season and you want to get the player on the field for a mid-season trial run or post season push. What team is going to trade for that contract and services if its on the IR?

That’s not rocket science or a grand conspiracy that Schiano is trying to embarrass Freeman. He’s actually doing the best thing to ensure he gets out of here sooner which is what both parties now want with the Bucs getting something back in return. Again, having him on IR assures the Bucs gain nothing.

It’s very evident that is the strategy which means there are some likely trade partners with offers that have the front offices attention.

  53. bucrightoff Says:

Freeman is the biggest loser here. Other teams are noticing how he’s handling this situation and its going to cost him opportunities. What happens if he goes the Minnesota (like some think he will), and it turns out Christian Ponder beats him out? Is he gonna demand a trade again? Will he hide from the media again?

Josh has lost a ton of money through this and now he’s losing opportunities. What a spectacular fall its been for him from 6-4 last season.

  54. Yeah It's me! Says:

Im SOOOOOO sick of the media! ” Schiano was adamant that Freeman was the starter on Monday).” You All disgust me. No matter what answer the media gets they pick every word apart. When Schiano was asked on Monday if Freeman was still his QB Schiano told the truth. Freeman was STILL our QB. Yes they were in the process of deciding if Freeman would remain the starter. Way Way Too many media people covering sports now. It’s disgusting .Every day I like you all (media) less and less. Media overload!!! Im cutting 90% ( not Joebucsfan though 🙂 ) of the media out of my daily life. You all just repeat everything for atleast 48 hrs anyway. Way too many opinions out there. And most of them are idiots anyway.Way too many football shows. I thought it was great at first with all the new shows and such but it just gets more redicilous every week, month and year.

  55. Illuminati Says:

Why is this even any kind of issue? Schiano doesn’t have to say squat to anyone about who will be active or inactive on Sunday, or why, until he is required to do so according to NFL rules.

  56. buc4lyfe Says:

The only time we hear I gotta watch the tape is after a loss, glennon mob is in full effect with contradicting comments at it’s best….wait until, Josh Freeman first game as a buc was a comeback win against the packers, if Freeman sucks so bad why should he get a pass for a loss? He has his guy now meaning schiano thinks he’s a franchise quarterback…..who agrees?

  57. TJ Ware Says:

Schiano says he will be inactive: Major Distraction
Schiano says no comment: Major Distraction
Schiano says he doesnt know yet: Major Distraction

Let the man Coach and Let the season play out.

  58. MakaevilTheDon Says:

Schiano is right on this one.

I recall hearing Stv Dmg last year whine and whine about the Bucs org not giving him information about the coaching search.

He was so sure that the Bucs should have hired Rich Bisaccia that he was determined to ruin any decision made by the Bucs if it wasn’t him.

The Smart Move is to never show your cards. And with the media, never invite them to the party would be the best option.

  59. jjbill01 Says:

Freeman took his position for granted, now everybody is blaming the coach because he won’t do what they want. ie media and fans.
Joe seems to be locked in with duimeg on 620 to keep his spot there
    GO BUCS

  60. Drew Says:

Dare I say Schiano pi$$ed off Joe and that it’s now being reported on other sites that Schiano left Joe standing at the media alter.

You guys are very silly. Joe as no beef with the head coach. –Joe

  61. Drew Says:

Sorry Joe, but I have to agree with everyone on this one. It’s not OK to throw a temper tantrum when you’re told you CAN NOT have a cookie.

  62. Drew Says:

We still LOVE your site and what you do Joe. On rare occasion we have to have a little fun with you.

  63. Jordon Says:

“Wasaaaahhhhh!” Come on media cry for us! How dare Coach Schiano not share with you every detail of his handling of an internal team and organizational matter! How dare he want to focus on the rest of the team and this weeks opponent, the Arizona Cardinals! How dare he not tell you the real reason why he benched a starting QB who is only completing 45% of his passes! has more interceptions than any other QB since 2011! Has lost 8 of his last 9 starts! And has missed meetings and team functions and shows no real leadership or instincts to be a top QB! WAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! He’s a mean coach!!!

  64. john Says:

great coach hire Dom so Joe you still think Mark is a rock star???

  65. Splengo Says:

Raise up off Joe. Joe is a dues paying member of the Fourth Estate. He knows like every other media outlet that it is just a matter of time before Schiano starts to come apart at the seams. Joe has been here before. He recognizes the signs of a suicide in progress. Joe will join the legion of learned journalist who see where this train wreck is headed. Preach Joe , preach!

  66. MadMax Says:

@buc4lyfe, I can only speak for me, but no, Im not going to compare the two. Maybe Im wrong (and the rest of the Bucs suits) for believing that Glennon can do no worse than Josh. Like they said, its the perfect time to play, spend some time evaluating and correcting, and then see how it improves……like I said, not rocket science.

  67. Splengo Says:

    Madmax,

You’re naive or just plain stupid. Forget about Freeman now. This is the Schiano/Glennon show now. It’s either wins or losses from this point forward. Man up! If you look at the remaining schedule and see us cruising to the playoffs. Fine. But if you’re wrong expect to be called out. Good luck with that strategy. Just saying!

  68. NashVegasRyan Says:

Get this Schiano out of town. What a clown! GRUDEN2104

The fourth game of the year and we will have two Quarterbacks that neither has been a starter in the N.F.L. and has not played in a N.F.L. regular season game. I hope it works because,if it does not the Glazer’s are watching and want the entire Buc nation to see the reason they will fire Coach.

Schiano will be fired after if not before the season. Gruden was a liar, and an ego maniac, but he at least got us a Super Bowl win before he went ape-spit! This guy hasn’t even breached the playoffs, not even mentioned in the same sentence as playoffs. He’s like that commercial with the little boss on the conference room, ” my way, my way, and my way”.

@splengo (wtfn he!! kind of name is that)

You think what you want of me…couldnt care less coming from a retarded freeman jockstrap licker….bottom line is I was seeing this last year and during preseason this year and knew something wasnt right with freeman and it had to change.

Good luck following his jock scent to the next team 😉
