Joe Talks Coaching Tactics, Media Circus & More
September 18th, 2013Joe joined The Big Dog, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, to talk all things Bucs this evening. It was a spirited “JoeBucsFan Hour.” Joe dove into all kinds of issues, from tactics to tight ends, locker room chatter, and more. Enjoy!
September 18th, 2013 at 8:14 pm
Okay Joe here’s my only critique of this whole “defense not changing their ways thingy”. Maybe Schiano sees what’s working on defense so why try and fix it to adjust to the NFL “new rules”? You guys talked about why give the Saints and Brees new life with a penalty. Well if the Bucs had a half decent offense to counter all those defensive penalties the penalties would not be much of a problem now would they? Despite those penalties the Saints were still shut down for 59 minutes of the game. The Bucs offense did nothing to counter the Saints offense. Nothing. 1 TD. The defense shut down the Saints, penalties and all. If the Bucs offense steps up the defensive penalties essentially mean nothing! Are you getting me here? I’m trying to help you out.
September 18th, 2013 at 8:18 pm
Fix the offense and the penalties cost us no games.

You’re radio show is just as much trash as your website has become. Good luck with your future endeavors, but i’m tired of supporting your garbage
BTW, your comment about the hits on your site going down, may have more to do with your content than the team losing.
Thank you for your patronage. The comment about site visits only made the point that game to game, there is always more traffic after a win versus a loss. That’s held true going on six seasons. It has nothing to do with anything else. There are more published comments after a loss but not more visitors. –Joe

I for one preferred the 4:00 hour with Brooks. He patiently, objectively, and clearly corrected BD’s negative statements about Schiano. Very professional and articulate stuff by #55.
September 18th, 2013 at 8:25 pm
Well I also disagreed with the caller wanting to go for it on 3 and 6 and then punt if they don’t get the first down. That still leaves Brees plenty of enough time to march down the field for a FG attempt. Or fan base are so full of morons.

You can’t play as though the rules do not matter. I don’t believe anyone likes the rules changes. I personally have tried to be supportive of Goodell but he’s gone too far now. Furer Goodell needs to be stopped.
However, rules are rules. The team lost both games because of penalties. There is no sugar coating that. To blame the offense for not outscoring points resulting from penalties is silly.
Four things need to be fixed with this team. Throw more on first down. Reduce drops. Reduce penalties. Improve offensive line play.
Freeman had completions both times they passed on first down. Why? Because teams do not expect it until third down.
Freeman’s numbers would be much, much better if those 4 things were fixed. Reduce penalties and the Jackson TD would have counted and we would have won the game…and Josh would not have been in a position to throw the pick. In fact, in the last game severap completions were negated by penalties.
Josh is not quite good enough yet but he is nowhere near as bad as people think.
September 18th, 2013 at 8:40 pm
I think most are hearing….”we’re not going to change the way we play”…..and not hearing “we need to lower our targets”
Clearly, Schiano doesn’t what to jeopardize the tenacious agressive defense he now has….but he does want to cut down on the penalties/mistakes…..he knows the way you do that is to lower the target.
I can guarantee you that is also in the minds of the players after seeing the fines and a near suspension. I would imagine we will get some calls…but they will be borderline like AC & LVD…..Black’s was another matter….that was foolish and I agree that he was a “copycat headhunter”
September 18th, 2013 at 8:40 pm
Enjoyed the show. Don’t mind the haters.
It’s like a few guys sitting around drinking beer and diving into every last detail about the team. Appreciate the candid way
September 18th, 2013 at 8:41 pm
One of the best on the Brooks’ hour was when BD took the position that Revis should have been on Colston on the last pass. (Schiano’s fault) Brooks interrupted and asked when Revis covers a slot guy, he kept after BD until he conceded. Brooks said Johnson had a good cover but Colston made a better play.
Joe, why not post the Brooks hour. It was smart football talk.
Glad you enjoyed Brooks. Joe typically pulls a point from Brooks and links to the show. To your point, it still does NOT take away from the fact that Revis was signed to shut down the best. Him not being on Colston for the crunch-time play was a mistake. That’s undeniable. Let the rookie mid-round pick (the guy Revis was covering) beat you. –Joe
September 18th, 2013 at 8:42 pm
Eternally Optimistic Homer …7 points the entire game. No need for some long drawn out paragraph. The offense scored 7 points in 60 minutes of FB. The Bucs have D that is shutting teams down. The offense needs to do their part as well.
September 18th, 2013 at 8:50 pm
@ Eternally Optimistic Homer
I agree with passing on first downs….you can also add.
2nd and short….this has infuriated me as a Buc fan for years.
We have a struggling QB….for Gods sake take some pressure off of him and let him throw on 2nd and short. We always run and what do we do?…barely pick up a 1st down…or we end up 3rd and short with little gain.
The problem with this is opportunity lost. There is very little chance of a sack on play action and a likelyhood of open recievers…..the worst that can usually happen is 3rd & short.
Come on, Sully….go for it!!!
September 18th, 2013 at 8:51 pm
With all respect Joe, I’ll give more credence to Brooks, and he didn’t find it undeniable.
I enjoy the way Brooks won’t let BD run him and speaks with football acumen. But we are all entitled to our opinion.
September 18th, 2013 at 8:53 pm
Peace & Bless to the Norton Family. Ken Norton was a great Heavy weight fighters, and even better human being( August 9, 1943-September 18, 2013). You will be missed brotha

Also Joe is correct about hits to the site going down after a loss. Before I found this site. I would not pick up a sports page or go near NFL.com for days after a loss and that goes back to about 10 years now. It’s just what I do. Noticed it when people were asking where I am after the Jets game. The only reason why I came on here that night was so some positive fans might be able to scrape me up off the floor like bubble gum. So your statement about hits holds water. I know all people on here are fans of this team. The bitchers, moaners, and positive people, but when this team loses and especially the way they did the last 2 weeks. It’s like ripping my heart out and feeding it to me. That’s how much I love this team. So if I get hostile towards Joe or anyone else just take that into consideration. Please. I really have nothing against anyone on here, although it may seem that way at times. I really NEED this win this Sunday.

You have to wonder if the Browns trade of Trent Richardson is a precursor to them trading for Freeman. They get an extra first round pick, which they could trade to us for Freeman. That gives them a potential franchise QB (assuming they feel that way about him) while they retain their original 2014 first-round pick. They’re also one of the few teams with the cap space to make an in-season trade for Freeman.
The chance of us making the playoffs at this point are remote. The chances of Freeman showing such dramatic improvement over the next 14 games that we give him a contract extension are also remote. We could trade Freeman, see what we have in Glennon, and still have two first-round picks in 2014. If Glennon shows anything, we could add two major impact players in the next draft. If he doesn’t, we could draft a QB and still get another impact player in the first round.
September 18th, 2013 at 9:22 pm
@ Illuminati
It is wishful thinking to believe that trading a first round pick for Freeman would calm the Cleveland fanbase…..
We would be very fortunate to get replace our 2014 3rd round pick. Keep in mind the season is all but over for Cleveland and Freeman would be a real “hail Mary”…..not going to happen…
September 18th, 2013 at 9:23 pm
Illuminati …yes I already pondered that earlier on a thread below this one.
September 18th, 2013 at 9:23 pm
(Just my thoughts-Don’t mean Issh)
Wait a minute Jason La Canfora was the source that began all of this Freeman being traded BS. Well Jason La Canfora & Cleveland Browns General Manager Michael Lombardi are very good friends.
Hmmm Cleveland Just traded for a 1st round pick + Brian Hoyer (career back up) will be starting over Weeden.
Rob Chudzinski
Norv Turner
I hope we don’t trade Josh
Gotta stay away from this Bunnahabhain 18..smh

LMAO I was just thinking the same damn thing…lol
September 18th, 2013 at 9:25 pm
Illuminati…at the very least if the Bucs don’t win soon. Dom might make a call to Cleveland and try before the deadline. Who knows?
September 18th, 2013 at 9:45 pm
@Buc1987
You would think that given both teams’ situations, that dialogue has already started. Of course, as fans we have no real way of knowing the Browns’ level of interest in Freeman.
September 18th, 2013 at 9:50 pm
Joe, I developed some catchy analogies that coincide with Tampa’s recent regime changes than you can use in your future posts and insightful radio talks…
Raheem Morris went to bars with his player’s…
Greg Schiano goes North Korea on his player’s…
Neither of those strategies work. ^
Couldn’t they have found an even-keeled coach? Is that too hard to ask?
September 18th, 2013 at 10:21 pm
even the GREAT
September 18th, 2013 at 10:26 pm
I think Maybe Schiano is talking publicly about “not changing” to keep the opponents on their toes, but is working with his players on adjusting where they hit, not how they hit.
September 18th, 2013 at 10:26 pm
great show as usual!
Regarding T_Buc40, saying your site hits are going down because of your content. Why do these so called fans have to take it personal if your opinions dont mesh with theirs.
And he wants to talk about your site hits going down, yet he “hit” your site to make a comment. And he “clicked” on your sponsor to listen to the show. Winner = JBF.
Stay positive bucs fans! Weed out the negative fans! Theyre cancers! We still have 14 weeks to right the ship!! Go bucs!
September 18th, 2013 at 10:32 pm
Joe, I listened to a few minutes of the program but tuned out during the belabored discussion about the penalties. Schiano well realizes the problem but is willing to let his players adjust to the new rules.
Seems like your media partner has a practiced disdain for the Bucs coach given his unwillingness to allow some players to speak freely with the media. (as if he is the only coach to ever do this?). Inc addition, maybe its sour grapes over not getting the prime radio shows?
It’s one thing to state your case and support it with fact, but the ongoing ridicule based on “inside sources” makes me reach for the dial.
Enjoy the site here, but you’re tuned out on 620AM.

“Great defense, win the special teams battle, and be a physical offensive football team that takes shots down the field,” Schiano said. “Physical, run the football physically and take shots down the field. That formula works.”
Schiano said he didn’t take the job until he had time to study the team, its personnel, the ownership, the front office and the facilities, and he concluded that the Bucs have a young core of talented players who can win right away.
“I’m very impressed with the young group, that core group,” Schiano said.
now he gets here and he has a problem with josh freeman…hmmm weird
September 18th, 2013 at 10:38 pm
@Buc1987
The penalities negate a defense’s progress on a drive. Theyre frustrating, and momentum stoppers. We gave New Orl 100 yards in penalties. Thats unnacceptble.
Plus, we almost lost Goldson for a game. Thats the biggest reason to address and correct those penalties. Once the suspensions start coming, our team and our fans will feel it.
I love Goldsons tenacity, and I dont want him to slow down at all. Just play within the rules. Start breaking legs.
September 18th, 2013 at 10:39 pm
vjack lead the league in yards per catch so yea we were taking more shots down the field last year, what changed in the offseason? So is there really an excuse for not playing freeman very much in the preseason if he thought the guy was inconsistent which he is, all that playing time went to a rookie hmmm yea freeman is set up to take the fall for this season
September 18th, 2013 at 10:46 pm
We also gave the Jets 100 yards in penalties. The Saints we gave 118. Thats unacceptable. No matter how you slice it. And with each penalty comes a WTF moment, a buzzkill. The fact that our team was able to hang with the Jets & Saints Despite of all those penalties, shows that we have the foundation of a good team. We just need to be disciplined, and then we’ll be bad ass.

That’s fine that you feel that, but I don’t see it like that. If the defense still has all these penalties and holds Brees and the Saints to 1 TD. What’s the problem as long as the Bucs O puts more points on the board? Atleast more than 7 points on the board. If the Bucs offense catches fire the penalties on the D won’t matter all that much.
September 18th, 2013 at 10:54 pm
All them penalties and they hold a high powered offense to 1 TD. I have no problem with that what so ever. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have no problem with anything the D does. Including the penalties if they shut the other teams offense down. Then it’s on the Bucs O to score more points. It really is that simple for me.
September 18th, 2013 at 10:56 pm
Brooks made a good point that we had Leonard on Colston for most of the game and did fine. But on the biggest drive of the game, it comes back to bite us. So I cant fully agree with his assessment.
The Saints coaches were aware that we were covering Colston during the game. So Im sure they told Brees in the last drive to look for that matchup and exploit it. Which he did.
If we use the same coverage throughout the game, and dont switch it up cause its been working all day. Well that also gives the other team time notice that we’re using the same coverage, and any professional coach knows how to adjust mid-game and exploit mismatches and weaknesses. And we got exploited when it mattered most.

I can respect what youre saying. But if you ask 99% of all NFL coaches what the first thing they’ll try and do to win a game, they’ll tell you “eliminate turnovers and penalties”.
Turnovers and penalties are like errors in baseball. They shouldnt happen. They are Mental mistakes, not physical. Once you eliminate those mental errors, then its pure football. Man on man, skill vs skill. And then Im betting on the Bucs everytime.

I’m no fan of Deumig. I tuned him out for years. But if you cant understand the importance of limiting penalties, then Jesus help you. Penalties and Turnovers are preventable. Once you eliminate them, then its pure football. And if you get outplayed by the opposing player, then you got outplayed. And thats it. But penalties are just giving away yardage. 220 yards in two games. Thats like the other team marching the length of the feild twice, which is 14 points and 20 yards to spare. Unacceptable. What worries me is we got more penalty yards in the second week than we did in week 1.
And before JBFs show, Duemig went down the list of offensive plays. We ran the ball 90% of the time. Thats like handing your playbook to them. Whether thats Sullivan or Schiano’s fault, that needs to be fixed asap. I dont care if youre Jesus Christ himself, theres no QB that can thrive in that type of playcalling.
We still have 14 weeks left, the seasons not over yet! We should be getting two starters back this weekend! When I see the Patsys, I smell blood! Time to feast Bucs! We’re starving!!

Really? You have no problem that we almost lost our star defensive player for the week? Yea, our D shut down the other teams offense for 59 minutes. And give up the bomb in the last minute. You may be ok with that, but I want my players to play untill the clock says 00:00.

Again if the Bucs OFFENSE were to do SOMETHING in the 60 minutes besides scoring 1 TD regardless of the TD that was called back for a penalty. NONE of what the Bucs defense was doing would have mattered. It would have NEVER came down to the last minute of the game. What part of this do you not understand?

Look if the Bucs O catches fire. I don’t want the D to change a damn thing. I’m pretty damn sure Schiano does not want that either. Although I can’t speak for him, but if I was him why would I want to change what the Bucs D is doing if the Bucs O starts to light teams up?
September 19th, 2013 at 12:27 am
I was watching the press conferences on buccaneer.com. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Sull might have taken a jab at Schiano.
It was around the 7:30 minute mark. Someone asked him about luck. And he laughed and said “I used to be superstitious where everything had to be a certain….. But you create your own luck.”
Maybe its just me, but it seemed like he may have unknowingly taken a jab at Schianos “attention to detail”.

C’mon, Steve and Steve. LeGarrette Blount is a better pass receiver out of the backfield than Doug Martin? That’s a helluva stretch. Has Martin been terrible over the course of the first 2 game? Sure, but he had nearly 500 receiving yards last season. Not to mention a few gains of over 50 yards. Blount? He had exactly 2 receiving yards last season. Which was actually a very entertaining 2 yards, as it was one of his patented hurdles. That’s ofcourse besides the point. I mean, you can’t possible believe that, right?

The problem with penalties is that the Bucs will become known as a dirty team. When refs think that they call anything and everything and the nfl seeks out opportunities to fine and suspend.
The fact that you are okay with this robs you of credibility.
September 19th, 2013 at 9:46 am
@TPCMatt – The point was related to Martin’s drops this year. Blount didn’t have drops like that in 2011, when he caught 15 balls yet everyone said he couldn’t catch and was no receiving threat.
