Goldson Suspended One Game

September 16th, 2013

The NFL is cracking down on Dashon Goldson, who since joining the Buccaneers has been cracking down on receivers over the middle, drilling what’s in his path.

The league announced today that Goldson was suspended for one game. Goldson can appeal, a process that likely would be resolved before Sunday’s Bucs-Patriots game in New England.

The violation was Goldson’s fifth for unnecessary roughness since 2011 and his second in the first two weeks of the 2013 season.  Goldson was fined $30,000 last week for striking a defenseless player in the head and neck area in the Buccaneers’ Week 1 game against the New York Jets.

“You had an unobstructed path to your opponent,” Hanks wrote in a letter to Goldson informing him of the suspension.  “It is clear that you lowered your head and unnecessarily rammed the left side of your helmet into the left side of your opponent’s head.  You delivered a forceful blow with your helmet and made no attempt whatsoever to wrap up your opponent or make a conventional tackle on the play.  This illegal contact clearly could have been avoided.”

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension may be appealed within three business days and an expedited hearing and decision requested in advance of Sunday’s game. Appeals are heard and decided by either Matt Birk or Tedd Cottrell, the officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.

Joe finds it interesting that another former 49ers Pro Bowl safety, Merton Hanks, is the league official quoted above.

Joe’s only problem with these league reviews and punishments is how subjective the process is. Joe suspects the NFL is much more interested in sending a message through a Buccaneer, versus a member of a high-profile team like the Giants, Packers, Bears or [insert big market city.]

    BS on every level!

    I blame Schiano.

  3. bucrightoff Says:

Anything less than 8 games for Merriweather is a disgrace. Goldson is making violent football plays (the game is still violent right?) and really only the helmet-to-helmet shot against Sproles was actually a helmet contact play, and even that isn’t 100% on Dashon. Merriweather meanwhile is out there for one purpose, to injure, and if you saw his hit on Eddie Lacy there was no doubt his hit was malicious in its intent, designed to hurt. Dashon is just laying the wood like a safety, at least until 2006, was supposed to do.

    Defense is Dead….

But I gotta say, I didnt like the Hawks wink to the sideline after the flag. C’mon man!

Schiano may have tried his best to correct the penalties from week 1 to week 2……The fact that nothing changed, shows Schiano encouraged it, which would be career suicide. Or his players tuned him out and hit like they wanted to.

Correct me if Im wrong here.

  5. tonytwocents Says:

McMahon needs to bring back the XFL, make the players sign a waiver not to sue, and force offenses not to wear protection, but force the defense to pad the sh!t up.

    huh….I actually miss the XFL.

  6. Timmer4444 Says:

The nfl is just trying to protect brady/pats like they always do

  7. Warrenfb12 Says:

    Spot on Joe,

Funny how Meriwether can do it three times in a game last week and just receive a fine. Meriwether has a history of this as well.

  8. Dave Says:

Bottom line is his hits and the Black hit wre both completely avoidable. Like it or not that is how the NFL is now. This is yet another thing that comes back on the coaching. Being a physical intimidating defense and a sure tackling defense is fantastic, but it does not defend the amount of personal fouls because of stupidity. it seems the coaching staff does not even care about those hits because they are “agressive” and their s”style of defense”.
Great. Stupid penalties and giving teams 15 yards and 1st downs becomes the Bucs style when their offense can barely muster 10 points a game.

  9. buccanAy Says:

the nfl is becoming UNWATCHABLE!!!..What about the LEGAL hit from Clayborn, and do we get the ball back…this is fkng PATHETIC…NFL needs to watch how the college game actually “tries” to gauge “intent”…isn’t that what it’s about…the NFL is gonna devalue this game quicker than Roger Goodell can BS another BS story about BS! Ill gladly watch more college ball where they actually don’t have an agenda to “lessen their liability”, at the expense of the game the promote so heavily. As someone mentioned, the new Maddon has the freakin “HIT” stick, and I bet we see…sickening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go the hell NFL

  10. bucsfan1979 Says:

@Dave- what you want to see players knees blowen out!!!! WOW i can’t belive this crap!!!! i guess the NFL should order flags for all teams. the recivers know that if they lower there heads when a safty comes at them they will draw the flag and they win that battle right?

  11. bucsfan1979 Says:

my be the bucs recivers need to lower thier head to draw the flag right?

  12. Kevin Says:

This is bull shit! Watch the prime time games or big market named team games and just WATCH the refs let these hard hits fly. They are calling the bucs with every little hit. If it were not for Fantasy football at this point…I wouldn’t even watch to sport. I’m tired of my team getting screwed. And I’m not blaming the losses on the penalties, the losses go on our offense and coaching….but these penalties are just ruining the game altogether and I’m close to becoming a big hockey fan starting this year. I’m disappointed in these rules and what they are doing to the game.

  13. Free's A Boob Says:

No fan likes the new rules, but they are the rules. Rick Stroud, who’s opinion I value, pretty much predicted this after week 1.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

C’mon man, what else can happen to this team, we have sure seen a ton so far, what a circus this has turned out to be thus far. Lets continue to keep it going, we have nothing to lose (literally) go ahead and pull the 5 year old plug on Josh ( think we have seen enough, an average QB that isn’t getting to the next level) and see what we have in Mike, why not, it can’t get any worse, can it?

  15. Free(Agent)Man Says:

Wouldn’t want Brady to get hurt right Mr. Rodger Goodell?

“Joe’s only problem with these league reviews and punishments is how subjective the process is. Joe suspects the NFL is much more interested in sending a message through a Buccaneer, versus a member of a high-profile team like the Giants, Packers, Bears or [insert big market city.]”

    EXACTLY

  17. blackmagic00 Says:

@ pewter power, ya, it can! If we suck too bad, we might lose other players mentally. Free needs to do his job, and so do vj, mike and the ol. the defense is great, even with the penalties. The defense gets penalties and still makes the stop. If Glennon goes in we might need the offense to just stay out the whole game. Free and company need to be that #9 offense from last year.

  18. Rob Says:

I find it pretty ironic that the NFL shows the Goldson hit, throws a personal foul, goes to commercial and shows the league’s PSA for youth football “heads up”, showing a youngster practicing a form tackle…head up, face in chest of the opponent…that would cost the Pee Wee football kid an NFL game check.

I’d have respect for Goodell if, a la Branch Rickey in the 1940’s, he had intestinal fortitude and pushed this agenda to right a wrong…to legitimately protect the players. Roger Goodell became “concerned for player safety about 3 seconds after being named a defendant in the concussion lawsuit.

I’m a criminal prosecutor and the “concern” I see out of the NFL is the same “concern” I see from a defendant at sentencing…not remorseful for their previous actions, but remorseful because they got caught.

FIRE SCHIANO!!!! Hire sully. Freeman is best chance we have to win and he’s already trying to run him out of town. Sully has faith n freeman and schiano has the veterans already questioning his tactics and play calling

  21. The D Says:

Well if(when) the Bucs tank this season, I think the coaches should call for an open season on opposing players. Might as well make it exciting for the rest of us!

  22. DCBUCSFAN Says:

Each Helmet to Helmet penalty should be subject to review just like each TD is. The speed of the game does not allow the refs to accurately make the call. (E.g. Clayborn’s sack on Brees).

  23. Fish Says:

I have never written completely in caps in my entire life, but this is how adamant I feel about the following:

I HAVE WATCHED A HANDFUL OF HIGH-PROFILE TEAMS ON HIGHER PROFILE STAGES PLAY THIS SEASON AND THEY MAKE MAKE BIGGER, MORE EXTRAVAGANT AND “ILLEGAL” HITS/CONTACT (?) THAN THE BUCS HAVE MADE THIS YEAR WITHOUT THE CALLS THE BUCS HAVE BEEN FLAGGED FOR. Particularly, in critical situations…

I’ve been following the Bucs since I was in middle school and I’ve never seen these kind of discrepancies. Not all of these hits are innocent, but it’s becoming ridiculous. A two-time pro bowl safety in Goldson (previously with a high-profile team like San Francisco) is complaining about the Bucs being a “marked team” after two weeks with the team is likely not a coincidence.

  24. Jeff78280z Says:

It seemed to me that the ref’s were calling anything that could be considered questionable or a judgement call against Tampa. Mean while the Saints got the the benefit of the doubt in similar situations. We have clearly been targeted by the Nfl to be made an example of. Of course not all the calls were borderline calls. That hit by Black for example. There have been too many calls that the refs would let go for another team. But were happy to call against Tampa.

  25. tonytwocents Says:

    SULLY 4 HC!!!

  26. tonytwocents Says:

    MILITARY MIKE 4 HC!!!!!

    ITS ONLY LOGICAL!!!!!!

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Here’s an idea. How about everyone stop playing like they know best and let the coaches and team do their jobs. The Buccaneers are not the only team suffering because of the rule changes.

The changes are set up so that refs have the freedom to call penalties any time they wish and decide the outcome of games.

I saw Saint’s players do worse on the field in several instances. Where are their fines and suspensions?

The fact that it was the side of helmets means an attempt was made to turn away. It wasn’t direct. Side-to-side is a glancing blow. unitentional.
