MRSA Hits The Bucs

The Bucs confirmed today that guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes have been infected with MRSA, an aggressive form of staph infection.
The Bucs first realized that MRSA, a very contagious form of staph, hit the team when Carl Nicks’ blister on the right side of his foot — not his turf toe — was infected when the Bucs were practicing in New England last Thursday. Shortly thereafter, Tynes, who did not accompany the team to New England, also was diagnosed with MRSA in his ingrown toenail.
Once the Bucs learned of the infections, ownership authorized an immediate and thorough cleaning of One Buc Palace as a precautionary measure, as the team does not yet know where the MRSA originated. The cleaning cost tens of thousands of dollars, Joe has learned.
To date, no other Bucs player has been found to be infected with MRSA. Nicks’ infection is starting to respond to treatment and recede, Joe has been told. Tynes’ treatment is also showing positive results.
Because MRSA is aggressive and resistant to standard forms of antibiotic treatment, a special blend of antibiotics is required to combat the spreading of the MRSA, which infects the skin. The Bucs have consulted with disease specialists both locally and outside the area. The Bucs have also been in contact with medical experts at NFL headquarters in New York.
The Bucs emphasized they do not know the origin of the MRSA. The fact no other Buccaneers are infected suggests the origin may not be One Buc Palace, but no one with the team is certain.
Monday, Bucs coach Greg Schiano met with the team and informed the players of the MRSA issue and the team was given an orientation on how to prevent MRSA. The players also were issued special soaps used to prevent and combat the infection.
UPDATE: The Bucs just confirmed, via Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, that a second sterilization of One Buc will be performed this weekend..

I said the same thing when the Nicks infection story first dropped. I have had MRSA and it was okay in a few weeks. However, it hurt like hell and it was hard for me to walk on my leg (infection was on my calf).

my little cousin was infected with MRSA on her knee and had to be hospitalized for close to a month. so, yes, it can be very serious.

Oh! Oh! All of these cases are not the same, but I’ve got an aunt that had a knee replacement and got MRSA during a stay in the hospital. It cleared up about 3 months after and has been told that she must take antibiotics for life.
She has recently filed a lawsuit against the doctors and the hospital. I hope Nicks fares better.

My mother actually died from a MRSA infection while in the hospital so it can be very serious. I am guessing (hoping) this is a much more controlled situation, but scary none-the-less.

This sounds like it could turn into some serious sht. Regardless of whether or when he plays again, I just hope he gets better.

Funny how people are so happy to refer to it as One Buc Palace as if it’s some sort of special shrine because of professional athletes. You should be disgusted. It’s a taxpayer funded facility that you don’t have access to…..The Glaziers can claim they “paid” for it. However, all of their money comes from the taxpayer, therefore YOU paid for it…

My guess is you are one of Obama’s 99 week unemployment recipients or a freeloading liberal loser but get your facts straight on who paid for what and who benefits. That stadium creates jobs and generates millions in revenues that filter back into the community through concessions, parking, payroll taxes and so on…. Obviously you are not a sports fan and unable to see the big picture…

I agree about Schianos demeanor. The start of the Monday presser was unlike him. Seemed to be really pissed off. This stuff is serious and can be a huge distraction.

We need to come out and look like world beaters this week. The only way to move past this disgraceful moment to be a Buc’s fan, is to come out on Friday and whoop some Dolphin azz.
If our # 1’s come out, look lost, helpless, and sh!tty, then we will have some serious problems.
The right thing for the Bucs to do is to be transparent with the fans about the issues (obiding to HIPPA), and let the world know what we are going to do to fix it.
Schiano has every right to be mystified, as this could potentially derail our season.

First, the term “One Buc Palace” is due to the upgrade the team had from the shack that was the original One Buc Place. It truly is a palace compared to the original headquarters.
Second, the taxpayers didn’t pay for a dime of One Buc Palace.

Glen- the training facility was NOT funded by the county or city. It was fully funded by the Bucs. As for MRSA- it can be spread ANYWHERE. Locker rooms are one culprit and those guys could have gotten it in a hotel gym, doctors office, or hospital. My wife got it at a doctor’s office.. it is tricky to kill. Even immaculately clean facilities can host the germ.

I completely disagree with Glen, but I really don’t see the point in attacking people who vote differently than you do. But while we are on the topic, GE makes 150 billion per year yet pays zero taxes on it. We spend our hard earned dollars amd they outsourse jobs to other countries. The top 50 corporations do the same. Some pay no taxes AND get millions in returns.
And they do it all under the republican corporate loopholes. THAT’s freeloading.

Hopefully the facility can be cleared and the players can quickly come back to health. An ongoing problem is not only dangerous, it could put a stigma on the organization.
