Demar Dotson is the lead dog in the right tackle competition, Greg Schiano said today. Joe’s got highlights of his other day-after postgame takes.
Greg Schiano addressed media this afternoon at One Buc Palace and offered highlights and insights following film study of the Bucs’ Friday-night loss at New England.
Here are head coach notes and quotes:
* Pass “protection errors” hurt the Bucs’ first-team offense.
* Mechanical errors were an issue on defense. Apparently, the helmet “device” used to communicate plays was malfunctioning when Tom Brady was in the game. (How the hell does the billion-dollar NFL machine continue to have these issues?)
* Regardless of Brady’s precision, defensively, “you don’t give yourself a chance when you don’t execute.”
* “Special teams was a plus.”
* The Bucs were more physical” than in last week against the Ravens.
* Mike James and Peyton Hillis were given high marks, as was the blocking in front of them.
* “Demar Dotson’s having a very good camp. He’s our starting right tackle.” …”He’s performed very well. I think Demar’s going to be really solid.” Schiano went on to say Dotson is battling some sort of leg injury and Gabe Carimi is still learning the system.
* Kicker Derek Dimke has been impressive on various levels.

Yes I knew something was up with the linebackers. They were out of position a lot leaving people wide open. Like the 3rd and short play when the running back was by himself in the flat, and linebackers cover receivers. They really need to fix this issue with hand signals just in case it happens again.
On that note can’t wait to see how Revis handles Amendola on the next go around. he was way too quick for Leonard Johnson and was beating him easily.

I know one thing for sure. When we play NE again someone needs to hand fight and jam Amendola at the line. He had a clean release everytime and burned us practically by himself. Take out Amendola and force Braidee somewhere else. These guys are unproven and if we can press our will they will make mistakes.

I did notice one play in particular on the first series where Lavonte David was motioning towards our sideline, as if he couldn’t hear the defensive call (at the time, I thought he meant to hurry up with the call). It is pretty amazing that they still have issues with that kind of thing. I could be mistaken, but I am almost positive it has nothing to do with a mistake by us. I worked video for the Pro Bowl this year, and a guy literally started yelling at me for my wireless mic, as he didn’t think I had clearance to have a wireless device (which of course I did). He was telling me that could interfere with the signal coming into the players. He had to look it up, and you should have seen how many different frequencies were assigned – literally pages full. All it would take is for one person to “accidentally” go on the wrong frequency, and they could mess up everything. I don’t see any reason why the NFL doesn’t just go bluetooth (or something similar) to avoid something like this happening.

Pass protection was ugly. If we don’t get Nicks and Joseph back healthy, it could mean bad things this year. They even struggled in run blocking, and it showed with Martin in the game. Whatever happened to the reports we were rolling Freeman out more in practices? I haven’t seen it at all. I understand why they took him out after such a small snap count, don’t want to risk him getting pummeled in the second preseason game with a patchwork line. Maybe they should have rolled him out a couple snaps to see if that would have been better.
I understand how there could have been confusion if the helmet receiver was out on defense, but it doesn’t change what happens on the actual play. They may not have been set for the snap as they should have been, but once the ball is snapped, they should know where they’re supposed to be, which gap to fill, which receiver to cover, etc. Even if they just go base defense, due to lack of communication, they still know what to do when the ball is snapped. Anyone wonder if this is the Patriots “testing” a new way of cheating? Cut the communications for a play or two, run hurry up, correct “communication issue” before the series is over so they don’t have to pay the penalty of turning off their communication devices? I mean, it was their stadium…
And to the comment about “press” coverage… there is a high probability they didn’t use actual press coverage intentionally. We play them again in a few weeks, and as much as we can give away tendencies in coverage (like “bites on double moves”, or “jumps the slant, run the sluggo”, etc), wide receivers learn DBs press techniques. They learn how to beat certain DBs press moves. This is preseason, why use things we want to work in regular season (unless, like the roll-out for Freeman, it’s to prevent injury from pummeling).

They didn’t even play the starters the whole first series on defense. Did anyone notice Goldson, Banks, Lavonte, and McCoy left halfway through the first series. The only ones left was Clayborn, Barron, and Foster and I think that was because the couldn’t get them out fast enough with the Patriots running the hurry up. Clayborn was coming off the edge and McCoy was collapsing the pocket, but Amendola was open in less than 3 seconds.

I recorded the game on my dvr. I’m going to upload to my computer where I can watch it again. I will be capable of pause, rewind, forward and zoom in and out. I will study it and get a better perspective of what went on with the offensive line. The only sucky thing is I can only see Freeman and the line but I can’t see the receivers.

Yeah that was the only issue. You can see the receivers during the game so you will not know it if they are open or not. I DVR it and watched this morning again.

Dimke made a 45-yarder in the Ravens game. I know he made 48, 49, and 52-yarders in college.
I don’t think he has a particularly strong leg, but he’s pretty accurate.
But then, what do you want from a kicker? He’s just there to try to reclaim a few points for the offense’s failure to score a touchdown.
If a team has to depend on kicking long field goals to score points, the problem isn’t the kicker.

Back in the yonder years they didn’t have the hovering cameras, so everything had to be shot from a distance. The advantage of that on tv was that you could see the entire play as it happened including the receivers. The drawback was that you couldn’t hardly see the ball, or read the names on their jerseys. Of course you needed a tv bigger than 12 inches too!

Look at the picture of the 2 shaking hands at the end of the game. One skill that I believe that I’ve always had was being able to read people’s facial expressions. Now I think Bill is saying or said to Greg something along the lines of you sly dog, you didn’t show your cards at all. I’m not typing this or thinking this to cushion the blow of what I saw last night. It is what I’m thinking. I didn’t like the fact of practicing against them or playing against them in pre-season prior to the week 3 regular season game in the first place. Some of you liked the idea. Not me as I stated on a thread 3 days before the game was even played last night. Seriously did that look like the 1st team that played against the Ravens? (which btw is NOT on the Bucs regular season schedule) I think Buc’n Junkie is right. I think we flopped on both sides of the ball for a reason. Meh some may call it an excuse. I don’t care what you call it.

Most emails only allow up to 5 megs maximum. The game is 3 hours long recorded in Matroska Media Container format and its around 7.5 gigs. Even if I broke it down to 5 meg zip files it would take 1500 emails to get it to you.

I wouldn’t say anyone “flopped”. Perhaps things were just too “vanilla”. Very little creativity or adjustment. Even when Glennon came in, the protections were not good. Looked like “base” plays with few adjustments. Kind of a “don’t audible, just run the play as is”. The intent would be to see the guys “execute” which they didn’t do very well. They obviously need to work on better execution no matter the circumstances or adjustments of the D. It’s amazing how much a D can pick up on audibles and adjustments to protections after playing a game and watching film. That’s why division games are so much more difficult and so much more important. It does mean something when they say “familiar with a team”. Well, playing “vanilla” in pre-season when it doesn’t count anyway is one way to minimize familiarization.
At the very least, we can now expect and be ready for the pace the Patriots will use. They can put in automatic base defenses if the call can’t get in in time for the snap and the defenders can be ready quicker. What they won’t know is what Nicks and Joseph can do and how much better protections can be when those guys are in and adjustments are made.
Not a “flop”, just a glorified practice against an opponent we will see when it counts soon enough.

I Think Spence may have been the best player on D this game, on the second play he thew the center out of the way and almost got to Brady, and then later he sniffed out the screen play, and even on the Brady TD pass, he was in the face of Brady and was held and pulled down, if it wasn’t for the hold he would have gotten to the QB.
