Mike Glennon Should Not Start
August 16th, 2013Joe is confident the Mike Glennon Mob will sleep little tonight, unless mass quantities of alcoholic beverages are consumed.
Glennon, the Bucs’ backup quarterback, came into an ugly game played by the Bucs at New England and led the Bucs on three scoring drives, often doing what Freeman struggles to do: Throw with accuracy.
And, no, that doesn’t and shouldn’t be a reason for Glennon to start Week 1 against the Jets, despite Freeman playing more like a rookie than Glennon.
Look, is it nice what Glennon did? Sure. But who was he playing against? The vast majority of players on the field for the Patriots facing Glennon will be filing for unemployment in two weeks. Why should Joe — or any sober fan — get all worked up that a quarterback moved this offense against a bunch of Arena League players?
Then throw in the fact the Patriots were running a vanilla defense for Glennon. No coach in his right mind, and Bill Belicheat is among the best, is going to put something on tape in preseason that may be important in the regular seaosn.
No, Glennon should not start. And, yes, Freeman gives the Bucs the best chance to get to the playoffs. This year.

Yet……
August 16th, 2013 at 11:21 pm
well said Joe.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:21 pm
Lol, I think Glennon is making Joe sweat a little bit.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:21 pm
Free is a Tebow clone. Free has nothing but rooms for rent and air between the ears. Glennon in my opinion should get the nod.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:22 pm
Free is a Tebow clone? LOL, yea ok.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:24 pm
Why not start Glennon against some ones next week, then and see what he’s got? There is no reason Freeman should be the clear cut starter. We know what he is: Vinny Testaverde. Just enough upstairs to get to the stadium, prone to an unbelievable game now and then, and destined for a long journeyman career.

I’m waiting to see our team on the field – the full complement of our starting offense and defense, then I will judge people. Until then, it just televised practice! Individually there were people trying to make the team and some of them did well!

@ Drew
take your head out of your ass. Troll
August 16th, 2013 at 11:27 pm
@Oahubuc
Glennon played against the ones tonight. What happened? Hillis got -3 yards and Glennon got sacked.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:28 pm
@Andrew 1… I will after I locate and remove yours.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:28 pm
Freeman needs a lot of practice in the last two games. They haven’t played him enough.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:29 pm
@ Drew
ahaha nice comeback douche. and by nice I mean pretty pathetic.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:30 pm
If glennon gets the nod, everyone can forget about even coming close to the playoffs. Glennon will not understand the offense all season.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:31 pm
Vinny Testeverde…are you on crack?
August 16th, 2013 at 11:32 pm
@Andrew 1… out of respect for Joe end of conversation.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:33 pm
Too small a sample size on Glennon’s snaps against starters. Give him some more. Freeman’s stats against ones are 2 of 3 for 8 yards and sacked 3 times. Nothing clear cut there.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:33 pm
Vinny Testeverde…never had an unbelievable game for the Bucs. I was there. Put another rock in your pipe and calm down.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:34 pm
“No, Glennon should not start. And, yes, Freeman gives the Bucs the best chance to get to the playoffs. This year.”
I agree 100% Agreed, however it entirely possible that Free plays himself out of the starting position. Mind you it would probably take another 5 game losing streak but it’s not impossible.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:35 pm
@ Drew
wooow, hiding behind Joe…what a pu$sy.

Playoffs?! Don’t talk about playoffs! Are you kidding me? Playoffs?! I’m just hoping we can win a game, another game! – Jim Mora
August 16th, 2013 at 11:36 pm
@PRBucFan … well stated.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:37 pm
Buc 87, I was there too, and yes he did.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:37 pm
@Oahubuc
No, it was clear cut alright. Our line was embarrassing and all the focus of criticism this week needs to be there and how the team was prepped. We’re honestly lucky Freeman is a big guy.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:38 pm
LMAO… throw out a little Troll bait and they never fail to bite.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:41 pm
Stranger, I meant to go back and qualify that. Yes, it proves the o-line was horrible.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:42 pm
I could either sit in here for the next hour and LMAO at the silliness of the Glennon talk of starting and being better than Freeman or I could just go mow my lawn in the dark. Either way just as fun. I am impressed with Glennon but like I stated earlier when the game was going on. Glennon was facing a vanilla defense like Joe backed me up on. No blitzes at all like Freeman was dealing with. Everyone still needs to wait and hear from Schiano and what he thought about it before they get all crack-head crazy in here over Glennon. I think I’ll just go mow my lawn now.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:43 pm
I say it’s time to move on. Freeman hasn’t shown signs to be great maybe average at best. At least Glennon has more room for improvement and knows how to throw a spiral. Worst case scenario we suck and get Clowney. Lord knows our pass rush is a joke. In my mind we have average players at the the two most important positions.
QB and Defensive end.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:45 pm
Maybe mowing your lawn will get your mind off of crack. Be safe out there.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
Oahubuc…I never saw any potential in Vinny at all. You know like 4,000 yards passing in one season. I’m out. Lawnmower is started up. Go pack that pipe now.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:46 pm
@ Drew
your know what, right your right, your not a troll… your delusional whiner.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:47 pm
O line is absolutely horrible. D Line need to line up faster. That all I can say and remember about this game.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:48 pm
@Eric Reyes
So you want to give up on the season RIGHT NOW? Really? Come on. If we do that, we’ll need a new GM and HC as well.
August 16th, 2013 at 11:51 pm
Prediction… Glennon will be STARTING by Week 12.
…just an Opinion of course. =)
August 17th, 2013 at 12:01 am
@Stranger
Playoffs are not gonna happen this year. Have you watched the last two games or just blindly loyal? I for one would rather get to see what Glennon has now rather than another 7-9 season and having to wait another year to get him acclimated to being a starter. Our O line cant block anyone our d line is weak except for gmc and Josh is a dream killer. Dom shouda picked up Freeney or Abraham now he looks like a novice not being able to see what common fans see.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:05 am
Buc 87, too bad you didn’t see that, because he had the same number of 4,000 yard passing seasons in his career as Josh has had- incidentally the first year he played 16 games. Even the year he threw 35 INT’s he had 3,240 in 14 games.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:09 am
@Eric Reyes
That doesn’t mean you abandon all hope. Building a team does not work like that. You’re supposed to use every week to improve your team. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But you try and I’m willing to let Freeman try. If not, we might as well just go back to wearing orange and white again.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:20 am
Anyone care to answer how freeman failed to check into a play that would have a wr run slant/crossing/out-in route to get the ball out of his hands quicker? I didn’t see a wr within 10 yards. Does freeman not know how to read a presnap blitz?
How did no one else not notice this?
August 17th, 2013 at 12:24 am
This is gonna be a loooong week with Glennon groupies flooding JBF.
Bottom line, the entire starting crew took a sh/t tonight. Especially the o-line, Freeman, and the entire defense. Its time to stop this ‘2 drives & and I’m done’ bullsh!t. Fu*k what the “norm” is in preseason. Schiano needs to play our starters more. Its time for Revis, Joseph, even Nicks to step up. We need to establish our identity, quick.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:26 am
He seemed to be reading the defense just fine, but I can’t answer why we didn’t run any quick plays from either Freeman or Sullivan. I guess Sulli wanted to play vanilla as possible.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:31 am
@tonytwocents
Pulling Freeman was fine since we had already lost Martin for the night and the line wasn’t going to block anything. Didn’t need to risk losing Freeman or Penn (who needs to step up) as well. Then again, having to start Glennon (who’s clearly not ready by a dozen of expert eyes) would get most of the fanbase off of Freeman’s back.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:44 am
My jerk of a neighbor is out mowing his lawn. What the hell??
August 17th, 2013 at 12:48 am
Four QB’s and none of them are ready. I feel like we’re the Cardinals.
August 17th, 2013 at 12:51 am
With the way our line played, we might as well be.
August 17th, 2013 at 1:23 am
Josh is our quarterback relax. The real question is who -what the hell is up with our interior pass protection (Even though Penn & Dotson didn’t have the best of nights on the outside).
With both Nicks & Josephs coming off of injury. I’m seriously concerned about Ted Larsen as a rotational player. I was hoping that Cody Wallace – could push him for a roster spot.
August 17th, 2013 at 3:57 am
The difference between Freeman and Glennon:
1) Glennon pulls the trigger quicker with more accuracy.
2) Glennon places the ball where a receiver is “going”, not where he has “been” (behind him), or above him, or at his feet.
3) Glennon displays characteristics that you expect your qb to come to the team “equipped” with (above average throwing skills). Otherwise, you might as well have a Tight-End throwing the ball (see Tebow).
4) Question: Which QB appeared to have the “deer in the headlights” look???? Don’t worry, I’ll wait…
After tonight, I feel that I have been Bamboozled supporting Freeman.
Let Glennon start with VJax and MWill next week. I think he’ll give us more production despite being a rookie.
Remember, Glennon had the same training in college that Matt Ryan & Russell Wilson received. Throw Glennon into the fire!
August 17th, 2013 at 4:37 am
@Pewter Bullion
“4) Question: Which QB appeared to have the “deer in the headlights” look????”
Both of them. Or does Chandler Jones need to get in our backfield some more to prove a point?
August 17th, 2013 at 7:58 am
Freeman was holding onto the ball too damn long. A 3 stop drop and get rid of it, but Freeman would rather hold onto the ball for damn near 4 seconds.
Freeman is our guy, but he looked like sh!t last night. Freeman can’t (won’t be allowed to) have another 5+ game losing streak.
I am pissed that Freeman is full of so much damn potential, but he just sh!ts bricks too much to be a reliable force.
Listen to Ronde, dude knows what he is talking about.
August 17th, 2013 at 8:30 am
Freeman has no clue how to read a defense nor adjust the play calls at the line. When you see a blitz coming you don’t have Wrs run 10+ yd routes nor plays that require 5-7 step drops not do you run PA. You need a 1-2 boom.
On those sacks it’s not the Wrs weren’t open. It’s routes took too long to develop while josh was under a blitz.
August 17th, 2013 at 9:10 am
Tebow 1-7 for -1
Sure, he can run. That’s what h-backs do.
Glennons TD passes looked good. Especially for a guy with zero career starts.
August 17th, 2013 at 10:19 am
Glennon out plays 6 pack 2 weeks in A row and jbf is down on him LOL
Try reality jbf

Now granted Freeman didnt get enough snaps to really judge him fairly. But if you realy think Glennon looked lost out there, you are clearly being bias for Freeman.
Me amazes me that the Freemanites are so blinded by there love they can’t even be impartial to a another team member who thus far through training camp has looked better in game situations.
August 17th, 2013 at 10:41 am
“Freeman gives the Bucs the best chance to get to the playoffs.”
The slimmest of chances that is!
August 17th, 2013 at 10:48 am
So who’s writing for jbf? Walt or 87?
August 17th, 2013 at 11:05 am
I’ve always been willing to give Freeman a chance given five years in the league with no consistency in offensive coordinator, system, or quarterbacks coach. However, his showing during two preseason games with many of those issue resolved or on their way to be resolved is pushing me in the direction that this young man is a bust.
With that said, if Freeman is a bust, then what? The “Giants Offense” is very complicated and apparently it took Eli Manning three or four years to fully master it. Offensive coordinator has stated as much on several occasions in defense of Freeman.
Consequently, how does Glennon become the starter if Freeman is not “the man”? Glennon is a rookie and given Sullivan’s observations regarding the complexity of the offense, he can’t be “cooked” for another one to two years.
However, Freeman’s contract expires at the end of this season. Do the Bucs offer him a one-year deal – not that he would accept that

So if Freeman isn’t “the man” how can we reasonably expect Glennon to be “ready” this season or next season? If Freeman isn’t the future of the franchise, do the Bucs throw Glennon into the fire next year – he does look good but that’s against the “2s.” Doing so could be disastrous for Glennon’s confidence and future development. Far more quarterbacks have had their potential careers ruined by being thrown into the fires of NFL level competition too soon than have emerged as an Andrew Luck.
If Freeman isn’t the future, it would be bad business to hang the franchise tag on Freeman for like $15 million and one season then turn the deal over to Glennon the following year. Similarly, it’s unlikely Freeman, facing an uncertain future with the Bucs would sign a contract extension – would you?
It’s a quandary that Mark Dominic and Greg Schiano will need to figure out and figure out soon. At the same time, the rest of the team isn’t getting any younger.
August 17th, 2013 at 11:17 am
Rick,
If Freeman is inconsistent and performing poorly, look for Glennon to get a shot.
Glennon looks to be improving, still obviously the backup QB at this stage, but the young man looks to be improving.
August 17th, 2013 at 11:34 am
When grown men are making $millions of dollars to win football games. Nothing is unfair. If Freeman can’t handle it then you give someone else a shot.
But we need to wait til the regular season to be having these discussions. We have no idea what Free and this offense will look like come september.
August 17th, 2013 at 11:42 am
Freeman is the second coming of Jeff George. Rocket arm and lots of physical ability. 10 cent head and no heart.
August 17th, 2013 at 1:48 pm
I was very disappointed last night, the O-line was horrible last night…
August 17th, 2013 at 4:36 pm
Glennon looked very good last night. Not because he could move the team against second and third teamers, but because of how he handled the position. His demeanor showed natural leadership. He was in control of the offense and
he could make the downfield pass with regularity. With that skillset opposing defenses must protect against his downfield attack, opening up more running opportunities.
No, Glennon is not ready to start. There is still much to learn in a complex offense. Freeman is the right call to lead this team at this time. But if Free doesn’t show he’s the man this year, 18 to 20 million may be to much for the team to pay with a viable backup ready in his second year to start.
August 17th, 2013 at 9:06 pm
Lmao. Glennon didn’t play the patriots defense.
Not the players. Not the coverages. Not the scheme.
The patriots went to, and stayed in, the most basic NFL formation. It is normally only seen briefly, before a shift.
They weren’t going to show anymore than they had to. And by the end of the first quarter- it was obvious that we weren’t good enough to compete with them.
And even with that huge edge, Glennon didn’t impress anyone, except the usual brain dead crowd here. And they know absolutely nothing about football. Or anything else.
The entire teams performance, for the second week in a row, was nauseating.
It wasn’t one guy, or one unit. It was the entire offense and defense.
I know players start rotating out early. Yeah- patriots too!
Are team looked helpless and hopeless from minute one.
I don’t care if the fourth stringers make a game of it. Our 1st and 2nd string- again- were totally out coached, outplayed, and out classed.
It’s still broken, after 5 years of rebuilding. And it don’t look like its getting any better
August 18th, 2013 at 11:00 am
And even with that huge edge, Glennon didn’t impress anyone, except the usual brain dead crowd here. And they know absolutely nothing about football. Or anything else.
————————————————————
Obviously your man crush for Freeman has incapacitated your ability to a proper thought process for anything other than Freeman’s sack.
Such a shame.
