Depth Chart Blesses Grimm, Leonard, Page

Cody Grimm seems to have an edge over Keith Tandy.
Busy on the Bucs beat for SportsTalkFlorida.com, Jenna Laine got hold of a 2013 Buccaneers depth chart, something the team will need to release soon prior to Thursday’s preseason opener. (Click above to view)
Noteworthy to Joe is Cody Grimm ahead of 2012 draft pick Keith Tandy at safety. Also, Brian Leonard is listed as the No. 2 running back ahead of rookie Mike James, followed by Peyton Hillis and the captain of the inactive list, Michael Smith.
WR Eric Page, who flashed at practice today and is rarely talked about in the wide receivers battles, is listed as the No. 1 punt returner. Smith has the No. 1 kick returner spot.
Last year, Greg Schiano said depth charts don’t mean much but he acknowledged that changes to the chart reflect current views of the organization. Translation: the depth chart is, in fact, meaningful.

Fair enough, just seemed to be reading alot that says rookie or not, they are out performing their veteran teammates. Not gifting if you earn it

I’m a little surprised they have James ahead of Hillis.
We appear to be deep at certain positions, and there is no doubt we will be releasing some solid players at the end. I mean look at WR, there are a lot of quality receivers that may not make it. There are quite a few teams in the league who have no depth at WR, and we are stacked. Everyone of these guys are having a decent camp so far.
Besides the starters VJax & MW we got:
Ogletree
Underwood
Owusu
Douglass
Hagan
Page
Mitchell
who all have done well to this point.
Since we could use DT and DE depth, maybe the Dom can work out some sort of trade. Like with the Patriots, or Seattle, or the Jets who are kicking the tires on Braylon Edwards again. Just a thought.

Nice thoughts Junkie especially the Jets, they are hurting @WR, then again I’d prefer MY Bucs to trade with someone not on their schedule.

Maybe they end up with these 5 Jackson Williams Ogletree Underwood & Owusu. Looks good to me on paper. Still too early in camp to tell though I guess. Just speculating.

Stocker ahead of Crabtree is interesting seeing as Stocker has been injured all camp. I like seeing Najee Goode listed as the backup MLB and Dekoda as the starting SLB. Also surprised to see Grimm that high.

Chart is mandatory before Preseason game. Doesn’t mean much at this point. Perhaps Grimm placement is good news for him

I’m sorry, Joe, but all this depth chart means is who needs the most reps and who doesn’t.
The 2’s are going to play a full half.
That’s why Glennon is ahead of Dan-o, for example. Dan won’t get better with more reps. He is what he is. Glennon needs more reps and playing time.
That’s also why Gibsonson is ahead of Spence…so Spence gets more playing time and reps.

Ogletree, Underwood, Owusu and Page will be on the final roster. Page will be a returner.
Douglas, Hagan and Mtchell will be camp fodder. At best one will go on practice squad.
You do not get trades for camp fodder…not when teams know they will be cut.

You’ve already set you’re line-up and you kept Owusu, Ogletree, Underwood out of a trade scenario. I was saying if Dom wanted to talk turkey he would need to keep those three in the conversation if he wants a quality DT or DE.
Like trade Ogletree with Douglass to seal a deal. Look, it’s just a thought. I put my Rock Star cap on and I came up with this.
Once they get cut it’s open market. By trading player for player ensures that both parties get their man. See, you call them fodder, where there are other teams out there that could use someone like Douglass, Hagan, or Mitchell. Those 3 guys are surprisingly have talent that I’m sure when this is all said and done they’ll end up on a team whether it’s ours or another.

For the most part the old starter is still ahead of the newcomers, that’s how it seems this first depth chart is.
But I imagine some of these players will flip flop soon.

Junkie, I didn’t mean to sound condensending. Apologies.
Pat over at bspn said that this depth chart is not official and that it it a “guess by the Bucs media relations team”. Some sort of tradition for the first depth chart.
I rarely visit Pewter Report anymore, but I’ve been reading their daily camp reports as well. I found this interesting for Friday:
“On the following rep, Penn threw his helmet in frustration after being shoved to the ground and beaten by defensive end Daniel Te’o-Nesheim on a rep. Penn took a knee off to the side of the action and was consoled by Gerald McCoy.”
Penn had a really bad day. He was called for penalties and beaten several times.
But what struck me was GMC. I thought he was just stepping up as leader of the defensive line. It appears he is doing his best to help lead both units.

^^^^ maybe Te’o is our dark horse at DE this season. Schiano has always liked him.

I learned a long time ago that these early published Training Camp Depth Charts mean very little when seeking a peek at the final roster make-up. Practice Squad eligibility, injuries and versatility factor in. It’s also a little pie in the sky to think we can trade fringe players. Happens, but it’s really rare.
