Notes From Bucs Practice Day 6

July 31st, 2013

bucs cheerleader 0801

Here are nuggets and notes from Bucs practice, Day 6 of training camp 2013.

* Kevin Ogletree schools Johnthan Banks on a comeback route TD from JF5 along left sideline. Schiano shakes head in disgust.

* MW19 goes low to dig up JF5 pass for 18 yards.

* JF5 to MW19 big gain along right sideline.

* Fake crowd noise!

* Michael Smith with a little shake and bake inside but goes down. Schiano bellows, “Finish, finish!” Smith bounces up, biting the football, and continues running.

* Nate Byham with a catch off a beautiful JF5 play action fake. Next play on a flea-flicker, blitzing Ahmad Black forces JF5 to unload ball.

* Derek Hagen has a short pass bounce off his fingertips on a crossing pattern.

* Josh Freeman threads needle to Kevin Ogletree.

* Lavonte David strips a pass out of Mike James’ mitts.

* Granted, Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks are limited but sure seems like Adrian Clayborn and Lavonte David are in backfield quite a bit.

* Vincent Jackson with a short catch nearly batted down by Mark Barron.

* Michael Smith lit up in backfield by Jonathan Casillas.

* Derek Hagen nearly made a circus catch against Braden Smith along left sideline but couldn’t hang on.

* Chris Owusu makes one-handed catch along left sideline in drills.

* Adam Hayward beaten badly by TE Danny Noble.

* Nice jump and fingertip grab by Mike Williams on a short throw.

* Freeman throws behind Kevin Ogletree

* Vincent Jackson with a drop on a very easy-to-handle ball.

* Interesting drill: WRs fight with DBs for pass over shoulder.

* Chris Owusu fielding punts. As much work as he is getting, it appears he is very much on coaches’ radar just like fans’ radar.

* Branden Smith (Georgia CB) now returning punts.

* Mike James returns kickoff straight up the middle.

* Captain of the inactive list Michael Smith returns a long kickoff and the fans respond with loud ovation.

* Bucs rock star general Mark Dominik walks past bleachers and receives standing ovation from fans.

*TE Nate Byham getting work with the first team in red-zone work.

*Undrafted rookie Rashaan Melvin with two instances of good coverage in one red zone period.

*Bryan Cox screaming praise to Daniel Te’o-Nesheim for his work at left end on a run play.

*Cox taking a long teaching moment with Williams Gholston on the field.

*Camp meat alert: Nice effort and technique by Adam Smith working at left tackle.

*Peyton Hillis turns the corner on Steven Means for a long gain. Hillis is powerful-looking dude.

*Keith Tandy slips as last line of defense following a Vincent Jackson catch. TD.

*DaQuan Bowers, late in practice, appears to succumb to the heat. Or he’s in deep prayer.

*Michael Smith runs into nosetackle Derek Landri and goes backwards.

*Najee Goode plays with a lot of attitude.

*Mike Williams with a good catch and escape of Rashaan Melvin.

*Steven Means is limping late in practice but playing through it.

*Sean Baker ends practice with an interception of Mike Glennon in the two-minute offense. Heinous throw.

Great time at practice today with my son. Bought a brand spanking new Revis jersey while I was there.

  2. McSiD Says:

As always, thanks for the info.

  3. You Go Joe Says:

No Crabtree?? I had high hopes for him, but nothing great so far.

  4. Jfgobucs Says:

    Nice ones…

  5. TheRealVince Says:

Hows Right Tackle looking with Dotson/Carimi?

  6. Joe Strummer Says:

    Anyone up for a “motorboat”

    ride…

  7. DJ Says:

Sounds like Free was pretty sharp today. Not surprised to see a lack of comments on it

  8. trusomaroff Says:

    I want a motor boat

  9. Joe Says:

No Crabtree?? I had high hopes for him, but nothing great so far.

Don’t think Crabtree will be an All Pro but he will start.

  10. Celly Says:

    @DJ,

as i’m reading the article and all the good things that Free did today, i was wondering the same exact thing.

“i wonder what the haters are going to say today. I’m sure there’s not alot of comments on this one”

    surprise, surprise.

  11. Joe Says:

Sounds like Free was pretty sharp today.

Monday it was believed Freeman had his best practice yet. He was even better today.

  12. TrueBlue Says:

Don’t forget the standing O for Dom. I’m sure some hearts were broken on that as well.

  13. bucfever40 Says:

Owasu forcing his way on the roster, I love it…..Crabtree is a solid TE, he should start in my opinion! Lavonte David should be ALL PRO this year, what a stud!

  14. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Sounds like everybody is getting better as camp progresses. That is exactly what you want. I am really starting to like this Owusu guy. It’s only camp but I think our WR lineup could be VJ, MW19, Underwood, Crabtree, and Owusu. (Not necessarily in that order.)

    Thanks for the update Joe!

  15. robert Says:

I’d be classified as a jfro hater. but I’m happy as hell he looked good today.

    GO Bucs!

  16. BucfanBF Says:

Great reporting Joe, glad to hear that free looked sharp. Concerned about Clayborn’s injury though…. 🙁

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Where is the “Realist” when Freeman has a good day?

Please note that I don’t call him an idiot like others do.

  18. SammyBoy Says:

Whats happening with the strongside LB job? You always praise Watson but he never comes up in the notes? How’s he doing?

  19. Joe Says:

    Sammy:

Joe thinks you may have answered your own question. Not saying Watson is having a bad camp. He’s not flashing, but remember there is limited hitting. That doesn’t mean he isn’t doing his job. He is still practicing with the first team defense and it is still his job to lose.

  20. Couch Fan Says:

He had a good practice. What a Stud Qb we have. Yippy. Lol

  21. the_buc_realist Says:

Did someone call???? As for JFro-6pak, don’t worry, there is always tomorrow. Its like a heard once before. “The guy is just good enough to let you down.”

  22. SammyBoy Says:

    @Joe
An average camp doesn’t make an NFL backup turn into a starter though! He should be impressing even without the pads!

Oh yer at the Freeman haters. When we won the superbowl…who was the QB? The eternal Brad Johnson! That just shows how badly you need a QB to win the biggest game out there!

  23. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Nobody ever doubted your ability to complain regardless of circumstance “realist”. Just calm down.

  24. the_buc_realist Says:

    Sorry West Coast,

i thought i heard my name called three times and i had to check the internet.

  25. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Funny that you decide to reply so quickly here but BamBamBuc made a great effort do some research just for you in another article(s) and you don’t even give him the honor of a response. I was REALLY looking forward to your side of that debate . . .

  26. BamBamBuc Says:

HAHA, WCBF. No worries at all. I rarely expect a response to any of the research I do. It’s here for your enjoyment. I love researching the team, looking at stats, watching the games. No skin off my back, pure entertainment. Besides, there wasn’t much to debate, the facts are the facts.

  27. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

lol, that is why I wanted his response. I like seeing trolls squirm. He made a very basic and broad analysis of Freeman’s game. You offered very solid proof that quite the opposite often took place. Then he just fades away to the next article like it never happened.

It keeps me entertained until we get to the regular season.

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“DaQuan Bowers, late in practice, appears to succumb to the heat. Or he’s in deep prayer.”

I’m a firm believer that it can’t hurt at all!

Only one Interception today? Looks like all the QBs are getting warmed up!

I’m not going to rag on Glennon for the one. He IS a rookie. And besides…picks happen a lot in training camp. In a way it’s a good thing. Because it helps find areas that need fixing.

For example, if a WR runs the wrong route.

    ANOTHER COOL THING
I notice the focus for the defense seems to be mostly on causing turnovers this year, as opposed to tackling last year. I hope Schiano challenges the defense to turn the ball over a number of times this year.

  29. neal Says:

“…sure seems like Adrian Clayborn and Lavonte David are in backfield quite a bit” I though clayborn was injured and not able to practice.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

WestCoast says : It keeps me entertained until we get to the regular season.

All of you are doing a good job of keeping me entertained. I’d be stuck watching NFL Network cover Cowboys, Pat’s and every other camp but the Bucs. I’m glad this site is here and we have cool peeps as well, even the skeptics. Ahhhhhh can you feel the love?LOL

  31. chris Says:

So, are we actually seeing improvement from Josh Freeman Joe? From your notes, it seems like he’s been better the past 2 practices. Care to give an overall view? Hopefully he continues to improve and get better because we need it this year.

  32. Joe Says:

So, are we actually seeing improvement from Josh Freeman Joe?

Didn’t look good in OTAs. Didn’t look good in minicamp. Really looked rusty last week. Monday was his best practice. Today, even better. Joe would call that “progress.”

  33. BamBamBuc Says:

You’re entitled to your opinion admin Joe, but there are some on board that would disagree. He hasn’t won a game yet, so it’s not progress. As a matter of fact, he must be regressing…. lol

Thanks to both Joe’s putting in the time to keep us all informed at a time of year when we all become Pro Scouts. Most of us can’t wait for preseason to start so we can “evaluate” the talent on the team (like it’s gonna mean anything or that we can even get legitimate evaluations in a preseason game as opposed to coaching practices….)

  34. the_buc_realist Says:

No where to go but up, huh Joe

  35. chris Says:

Glad to here there is improvement.

  36. Joe Says:

Thanks for the kind words guys.

  37. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m wondering if Spence is practicing with the starters yet.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

After listening to Joe and Steve (what’s his name Duemig) talk about how we have to worry about the teams in our division. I’m sick of it. I’m taking the tonytwocents approach from now on. Fuk em all. I’m sooooooooo convinced that we are going to take this division this year. So to some I’ll look like a homer or over confident. I don’t give a rat’s ass. I’ll stand by my convictions. Maybe the rest of you don’t see it, but I do. Homer….. whatever. Your wrong. There is not ONE team in our division that scares me against MY Bucs. For the last 10 years or so I’ve been VERY skeptical. I look at each game MY Bucs play and tell my wife, well they might lose this week or win this week. I’m not a rah rah we can win them all type of fan. I call it like I see it. I say this so you know where I’m coming from. Sorry but that segment with Joe and Steve just got me fired up. The Bucs will win the NFC South this season. Watch and learn homeboys, watch and learn. If your a gambling man. Find a bookie and fast.

  39. Joe Says:

    Buc1987:

If you are not concerned about the Dixie Chicks or Drew Brees, then you are naive or stupid or both. Atlanta may be the best team in the NFL. For Joe — or anyone — to suggest Atlanta and New Orleans are joke teams and are easy wins is at best intellectually dishonest and frankly, just plain stupid.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

No I’m not worried about Atlanta by any means. I did not say easy wins either, I don’t know where you take that from. Atlanta the best team in the NFL, now who’s being stupid? Nor did I call them joke teams. I’m saying MY current Bucs are better than both of them. Guess we’re about to soon find out won’t we? MY Bucs WILL beat the Saints in the home opener. I also predict right here and now a sweep of your best team in the NFL Falcons by MY Bucs. We’ll see Joe, we’ll see. This copy and past stuff is going to look so sweet in January. Naive or stupid or both. It’s going to be comical.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

PS I do understand why you have to remain objective though, and I am big fan of yours for doing so. So please don’t misunderstand my supposed stupidity.

  42. scubog Says:

Dominik receives a standing ovation from the Bucs fans in attendance except for one lonely guy who bends over, drops his baggy shorts and displays his Warren Moon.
