Schiano Says “I Only Got One” Quarterback

Josh Freeman is the guy. He’s the man. In fact, Greg Schiano says he only has one quarterback.
Schiano not only made that crystal clear on NFL Network last night. He also said with certainty that Freeman’s going to do “big things” and have a “big year.”
“Who’s your quarterback?” Schiano was asked by Total Access host Andrew Siciliano.
“I only got one, it’s Josh Freeman,” Schiano said.
Of course, Schiano could change his mind and decide he has two quarterbacks if Freeman is inconsistent and the Bucs don’t win more than they lose.
Schiano went on to say rookie QB Mike Glennon will be a “a tremendous quarterback in his time.” But that time isn’t now.
“[Freeman] had a really good spring. I mean a really good spring,” Schiano said. “I think it’s really coming together. You know being in this system for the second year now and hearing the things over again after being able to study it. I’m really encouraged. … We’re looking forward to big things. Josh’s going to have a big year.”

Hated the Glennon pick. Probably could’ve had him in round 4 while adding other quality linebackers or tight ends instead. Glennon just doesn’t strike me as someone who will develop into a legit trade chip and/or starting quarterback in the NFL.

Funny, I thought Freeman was a reach where we picked him too!
Now in his 5 th season, he just doesn’t strike me as someone who can develop into a quality NFL starter.
Maybe we can use his as a trade chip since the team won’t give him a contract.

Funny, but I really can’t stand people that are so negative towards their own team and QB. Think about this for a second….Josh Freeman is in a contract year, in the second season under the same OC, with a very good O-line, top tier RB, a true number one WR and one of the best second WRs in the game. Yeah, I’m with Coach Shiano. Freeman is going to have a big year.

The interceptions bother me but not nearly as much as the balls batted down at the line of scrimmage. Reminds me of Chris Spleen Simms. Too much in fact. I hope Josh get’s it right because the search for another QB is a long one. I don’t think Big Bird Glennon is the answer.

Why can’t a team Draft a QB without there being a controversy? Teams need a solid backup. You think Atlanta would win any games with Dominique Davis at QB if Ryan got hurt?

Schiano has changed his tune somewhat from the end of last season and shortly after the draft of Mike Glennon and the start of the so-called QB controversy.
I think his words today are saying that there is definitely no QB controversy at the Bucs. I also think they did not see enough in OTAs to feel otherwise, hence Mark Dominik suggesting that they may even carry 3 QBs on the roster this year. My opinion, they feel Freeman is the best chance to win this year and does not want to undermine his self-confidence.
They released Orlovsky on April 4 and promptly re-signed him on April 9. This back and forth prompted Joe to inquire of Mark Dominik if they were actually going to carry 3 QBs in the June 10th link below.

Not a hater or being negative at all. Stated here earlier that I’ve not been this excited about our team in at least 10 years.
But the fact is Freeman homer (maybe you can ascertain that because he is posting as @freemanbomb) is running down a prospect who’s never taken a snap in Pewter.
So who is the hater?
Simply put, I’d like nothing more than Freeman to succeed, however, after watching the last 3 home games from the stands, I have little faith that he’s the guy.

What’s coach to say?
It’s pretty clear that Glennon is raw since he himself provided that assessment. Even if this guy is the next Aaron Rodgers, (doubtful) he’d still be just a rookie making rookie mistakes.
Next season may be different, but there simply is no QB controversy this season.

Is this coach speak? Or does Schiano actually feel that Josh gives him his best chances of winning. Does he see the potential that just needs more commitment, or could it be that Schiano agreed with Dominik, to give Josh another shot without putting his job on the line with Josh’s last year. If it goes badly and the season is lost because of bad QB play, Schiano will start fresh next year with his new protege . So why not? No controversy, throw all your cards in, because right now, it’s just a one year deal, and there are no guarantees. Josh is in control of his own fate.

Trust me when I say this, I certainly want to be fair and intend to add no further debate about a QB controversy. I think Schiano’s words were clear as rain and without any hesitation or qualification last night.
One could even assert that when he said that “I’ve only got one QB”, he was saying there isn’t even any competition at the position which is quite different than what he has said before. It may have been coach-speak or even meant as psychological motivation. I’m not going to second guess what his intentions were. At the time, he just may not have been sure and now he is.
Contrast this interview with the National Football Post interview and it’s night and day. The coach’s words last night were unequivocal and should put to rest any notion or further talk about a QB controversy!

I think the true question about HC Shiano is how loyal will he remain to Freeman IF or when things start to go bad…. IF the Bucs, after 1/4 of the season, are 1-4 with Freeman playing like freeman does (inconsistant) will he remain true to Freeman… What IF after 1/2 the season the bucs are 3-5, will HC Shiano still be as adament about Freeman being the starter and keep Freeman the starter to offer him the chance to attempt to turn things around… WHAT IF after 3/4 of the season the Bucs are at 5-7 is Freeman still the starter…
My point is this, it is 1 thing for HC to be adament about JF being his starter if he truly believes that JF will do great things and it is obvious that if JF proves to be a bust he will be replaced…. But, what will play out if JF doesn’t live up to HC expectations yet plays OK….
It would be interesting to know when or rather what would it take before HC starts growing nervous about his own job security and bails on the “Freeman experiment”!

The only way Freeman is yanked is if the Bucs have already been eliminated. (Or injury). That is also only if the reason we are losing is Freeman. We have three fairly injury prone starters on the D-line and a starting corner coming off an ACL. If any combination of those guys go down then we could see a return of the second worst pass defense in NFL history.
To be honest, I am more concerned with the defense than the offense at this point. The offense has already demonstrated the ability to win games. (Albeit, inconsistently) Whereas the defense has a lot to prove. A lot of new parts on that side of the ball. I am not overly confident in Sheridan to run this defense either. I was a little disappointed with how the defensive play-calling adapted to the loss of personnel last season. (As in, it didn’t adapt at all, sans the last Falcons game.) When you lose key personnel you have to adjust play calling to minimize the damage. I just didn’t see enough adjustments last year. I hope Revis is the key to making this defense successful . . .

Tye, I’m sure those questions will be answered by what the coaches deem to be the issues on the team causing the record to be what you say. If the coaches think it’s the QB, they may change QB. If they think it’s pass rush, or injury, or LBs or whatever, they may adjust or make changes there. Also consider, the coaches may not make changes at QB, even if they think QB is the issue, if they feel the backup (Glennon) is no better an option based on what they see in practice. They’ll stick with Josh, let him ride it out and keep working with Glennon in practice until he’s ready. If you have a guy playing poorly, but the backup isn’t any better, you probably stay with the starter and let him wash out after the year and replace them both with someone new next year.

Of course Schiano is going to say this now about Freeman. At the end of last season, when Schiano said he wanted to bring in competition, everyone was in a tizzy and Josh got his feelings hurt. Schiano now has to prop the mentally fragile JFro back up by saying positives about him, whether Schiano believes them or not.

All the come from behind games, the throws under pressure late in games (remember the TD pass to V Jax at the end of the Carolina game?)….Just hating to be hating. Schiano needs to ascribe to his buddy Beiicheats maddening methods with media matters. How to say absolutely nothing in 30 seconds or less.
This isn’t going to die unless Glennon really tanks his reps this preseason.

That’s just being cautious since your head coach already instill he doesn’t want turnovers. It has nothing to do with “mental fragility” and more to do with not wanting to turn the ball over on an interception in such a close game. If he would’ve called a pass play threw an interception we would be saying he threw away the game, he just can’t win.

LOL, one play. Yep, that is all the evidence we need to prove his “mental fragility”. Lets discard the late game heroics throughout his career because there was one play in one game where . . . Give me a break.
Part of me wants to see Freeman succeed somewhere else just so these neanderthals could see what it is REALLY LIKE to not have a competent quarterback. Unfortunately, that is just a small part of me. Most of me knows Freeman needs to be here for this team to do anything in the next two years.
The same people bitch and moan every day about Freeman. Despite the fact that he is DEFINITELY your starting quarterback for 2012. These people also have no logical suggestions as to how to replace him. Just bitch and moan. That is way easier than offering a solution. The truth of the matter is we are stuck with Freeman until a better option comes along. Seeing as there are, what, fifteen teams looking for a QB every year, it could be a while. So why don’t you run down to your nearest grocery store and pick up the biggest box of tampons money can buy.

Not a blind homer, I actually acknowledge Freeman is playing for his career as a Buc this season.
I think “hating” on Glennon would be more on the lines of saying he sucks, couldn’t win in the ACC, mediocre record etc.
I wouldn’t hate the pick if we would have did it later in the draft, just not with our third pick.
