Internal Expectations Couldn’t Be Higher

June 25th, 2013

Vincent Jackson is confident the Bucs will improve their offense significantly this season. The Bucs were the NFL’s ninth-ranked offense in 2012.

There couldn’t be more pressure on Josh Freeman and the Bucs coaching staff entering this season. Joe loves it. This season is what being a fan is all about. — high expectations and, hopefully, excuses-free.

The Bucs are loaded with eight Pro Bowlers, all 30 and under, and they should be thoroughly settled in to their offense, which was ranked ninth in the NFL in just its first season.

Count on the offense being better out of the gate in 2013, so said Vincent Jackson yesterday on WDAE-AM  620. Jackson hit the popular talking points of why Year 2 under the New Schiano Order will mean better efficiency and execution, but Jackson really zeroed in on Josh Freeman taking a big leap.

“He’s going to be way, way, way ahead of the curve, as far as, you know, where we started last year going into this training camp,” Jackson said. “He spent a lot of time, you know, on his own outside of what we’re required to do. Just becoming more familiar, becoming more comfortable with this offense. And you can see that already. And once he really continues to excel at that, at that part of the game, then you can just already see his physical tools just start to shine. You know he’s not out there thinking so much. He’s just being, you know, that big, strong athletic quarterback that’s firing the ball around. It’s going to be a big year for Josh. We’re excited for him.”

Again, Joe loves all the big talk and no-excuses mentality. It’s not manufactured. The Bucs should be better on both sides of the ball, which should translate into an improved record. (You can catch Jackson’s entire WDAE interview below.)

You would think they are asking Freeman to learn quantum physics instead of an NFL offense.

  2. flmike Says:

    @Biff Barker
Have you ever actually seen an NFL playbook? For some offensive coordinators it looks just QP.

  3. Couch Fan Says:

No excuses. That should be this years motto. Cant wait!

  4. robert Says:

    lol

play enough madden and you learn to read a defense. maybe jfro needs to be on his ps3 more because since I started I have gotten pretty darn good at reading the other guys defense.

    same same.

  5. robert Says:

    no excuses…lol

    that’ll be the day.

I still love the it’s bush’s fault line someone threw out the other day. LOL

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

The tone of all the interviews is a Superbowl expectation. They’re saying it, without saying it. Maybe the new Bucs mantra should be:

    “Why not us? No excuses.”

  7. robert Says:

problem with that jeff is when they get smacked in the mouth a couple times early on will the man up or curl up?

  8. lightningbuc Says:

“You know he’s not out there thinking so much”

Kind of like the Dallas game last year when he called a running play on 3rd and long due to the headset not working.

  9. the_buc_realist Says:

For VJ its got to be soon, he will be 31 before the season ends. They need to make the playoff run now, and VJ knows it.

  10. Bobby Says:

@Robert….so thaaaaaattts the problem…you play Madden and think this is the way it should work in the real NFL. Now I understand your frustration. OK then, moving right along…..

  11. Bucfan4life7 Says:

    @Robert

I had to say something when I saw that. Are you seriously comparing real life to a video game. You can’t be serious and if you are you have problems.

  12. Bucfan4life7 Says:

Oh just saw Bobby beat me to it

  13. Mean D Says:

No excuses for Freeman? The WestCoastBucsFan would have nothing to post!

  14. robert Says:

let’s see….they read the defenses on a playbook right!

they see it on a screen right!!

on Madden you make your playbooks and it is on a screen and you read the defense.

not saying when the bullets fly it’s the same, but presnap its still about what you learned on paper and on the screen.

so, yeah. same same!!!!!!!!!!!! challenge me to a madden game I dare ya!

  15. robert Says:

lol, some of you are too easy……….you take this blogging WAAAY to seriously

  16. Andrew 1 Says:

ahahahaha to compare madden to the real game is just moronic. tell you what… go down to one buc place and tell them your an expert because your great at madden. Im sure they will hire you right on the spot… or laugh at you harder than I am. either way it should be a real eye opener for you.

  17. Tim Says:

You guys make me laugh, have any of you played? I am telling you right now Madden and the actual thing are totally different. I played safety and it was my job to read the offense, certain calls are easy others were not. One difference is perspective, its easy to say from a birds eye view where who is and what they may be doing but on the field its different.

As for learning the playbook, that’s not the difficult part. Really they are all about the same. The learning curve comes in three phases,
    1. verbage (every coach has his own language so to speak)
    2. audibles (what triggers an audible, what is a false audible, some are silent reads for the individual to pick up, others the QB has to call.
    3. impromptu plays (a play breaks down for what ever reason, a QB needs to be comfortable knowing that his X will do one thing, his Y is doing another while his RB is doing something else.

These are the things that will improve in a second year in a offense.
Go back to your couch Robert you don’t know spit about football.

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

yea right like your were kidding.

  19. Jonny 2.3 Says:

    @Biff Barker:

    Good one son.

  20. robert Says:

@ tim……I love the guys who played a few times and now think they are experts because they were on the field.

    brilliant minds conceptualize.

you remind me of that guy in the billy madison movie. “Odoyle RULES”

    keep living in the past!

  21. Bobby Says:

Yeah…the guys who played the game (instead of Madden like robert) they wouldn’t know anything about the game….(rolleyes) With every post robert you just prove how totally void of actual football knowledge you really are.

  22. Drew Says:

    @Robert

I formally challenge you to Madden and after being defeated by the Madden World Champion… you will find.

    You have been weighed.
    You have been measured.
And you absolutely… Have been found wanting.
Welcome to the New World. God save you, if it is right that he should do so.

  23. Bucky23 Says:

don’t see how we don’t make the playoffs if we are able to stay healthy

  24. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I told you guys before how clueless Robert is. You play Madden from a birds eye view at all times. Think about how much more difficult the game would be at field level. If you really believe there is even remote similarities between Madden and the real game then you have no grasp of reality. I play Madden day in and day out and I can tell you the AI in Madden is absolutely terrible and extremely predictable. A third grader could “read the defense” in Madden.

On topic, I agree, there is no excuses this year. No first year coaches, no first year systems, and hopefully no defenses attempting to set all time records of futility. We have a top ten offense that should only improve with another full offseason and a defense that has seen significant personnel upgrades. At this point, 9-7 very well could end up being a disappointing season.

  25. Robert Says:

    Top 10 offense LOL

  26. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Ninth to be exact. Is there something about facts that you find humorous? Or was the offense not top ten in your video game fantasy land?

  27. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Man, VJax is well spoken. Unlike Josh, he doesn’t fumble or mince his words. I wonder if Vincent has a strong arm. With his intelligence he probably should have been a QB.

  28. Macabee Says:

    Buc’n Junkie,

I have no desire to enter the Freeman debate and I don’t do chat rooms. But I need you to go to Wiki and look up Vincent Jackson and see the road he has traveled to get to where he is, you may tend to be more forgiving!

  29. Back up kicker Says:

@WestCoast….Robert’s pissed you called him a 3rd grader. He’ll actually be in 4th grade next year. Hey Robert I need a clown for my kids b-day. You know anybody who wears clown shoes?

  30. Back up kicker Says:

Robert’s answer “No, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”

  31. tmaxcon Says:

bucfanJeff — Nice Motto… better T-shirt. May I plagiarize you!

  32. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    @Macabee

Ok, Vincent’s not only smart, he’s savvy and shrewd. ..meh ..now he’s a Buccaneer Man

  33. Capt. Tim Says:

If any of the following day it- it carries more weight than anything anyone here can add

John Lynch, Derrick Brooks, Vincent Jackson, or Tim Ryan.

If Vincent Jackson is excited about Freeman- then we should be to!

  34. 76buc76 Says:

We finished 9th in total offence. Wow that matches the year Shawn King lead us to the 9th in points for. The only two times the Buc’s have finished in the top ten. Of the big two offencive stat’s point’s for and yard’s for. I’ve said too many times over the year’s “this will be the greatest Buc’s offence ever”. But WTH this will be the greatest Buc’s offence ever. The Charger’s a couple year’s ago had a top 5 offence and defence. But missed the playoff’s. Talk about the anti clutch. The Buc’s went 10-6 with a 20 something offence and defence. We could have the 6th ranked offence. Yet finish 7-9 if Free turn’s it over or stall’s for 2 quarter’s. If Freeman can go 2TD for every turnover we’ll make the playoff’s. If he goes 1 for 1 were done.

  35. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    Well said Capt. Tim.

  36. scubog Says:

As John McEnroe would say, “Robert, you can’t be serious.” Playing Madden is the same as being on the field? I suppose next you’ll be able to get in the ring with Mike Tyson because you played Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots. Or be able to get on the court with John McEnroe himself because you played Pong on your old Hitachi. Maybe even get on the track at Daytona because you had a Hot Wheels set. Apply for a job a NASA because you once lit a bottle rocket. Maybe get a role in a porn movie because you hid in the closet with a National Geographic magazine and well ………….you know.
