Secondary Effect From Secondary Upgrade
June 5th, 2013Last year, one reason Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik signed wide receiver Vincent Jackson was for his leadership skills. Dominik guessed, rightly, that his young receivers needed to learn from a solid vet how to be pros.
And that’s exactly what happened. Jackson took fellow wide receiver Mike Williams under his wing, showed him how to put in the work off the field, if not on the field, that it takes to be a top tier NFL player.
This offseason, Dominik also applied the same philosophy to what was one of the most woeful secondaries ever to take an NFL field. It seems to be paying off already, and it is only early June.
Well after yesterday’s Bucs OTA practice was over, a good 20 minutes, perhaps a half-hour, there was Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson working on tip drills and ballhandling drills with safety Mark Barron and cornerbacks Leonard Johnson and Danny Gorrer.
None of those guys needed to be out there. Surely Revis, rehabbing his surgically reconstructed ACL, and Goldson didn’t need to be there. Johnson and Gorrer didn’t have to be there.
But there they were, led of course by the new alpha males of the Bucs secondary, Revis and Goldson.
It was impressive for Joe to see. And Joe suspects this isn’t the first time that has happened. These big brother-little-brother moments will pay off come September for the Bucs defensive backs.

Can’t wait until next year, when the pop-star realizes that the D-line needs a leadership Vet that will help them. ( that is if the Pop-star is still around)

I know its only OTA’s but I’m extremely excited to see how this team appears to be coming together for the common cause. We needed some veteran presence on the defensive side of the ball. Even if Revis is not 100%, his mentoring to the younger guys will only make the secondary that much better overall.
Regular season can’t get here fast enough!

Glad to hear that! Where was Wright during all this? Was he at a spa or something? Thanks for the insight Joe.

Hey Buc Realist go bite another lemon.
I love these stories, they shut up all those trolls that bashed Revis and labeled him as a locker room cancer.

Nice to hear the seasoned vets show the young guys how its done. These experiences should be invaluable to them. It is like having extra coaches on the field. Cant wait for real football . . .
Gerald McCoy? Or is it asinine to think a player drafted by Dom could actually be good at something?

@wcbf
hard to lead when you are rehabbing all the time, we will see if he can do this since this is really his 1st availablity to be a leader this offseason.

@Realist
It appears you have changed you stance. You had all but guaranteed the “Pop-star” was to be fired following this season.
Some backpedaling by “the realist”?
Interesting.

RCH — World of Feet is having a 2 for 1 pedicure special. Rumor has it, Wright was meeting Jeff Faine for pedicures today so they could discuss Faine’s new line of spandex underwear.

Oh yeah a lot of coverage sacks coming
June 5th, 2013 at 1:19 pm
That is so good to hear. Sounds like the new guys are all in, and the team is really forming quickly.

Strong effort this afternoon!

Has it occurred to any of you “Wright hating idiots” that he does have a newborn and though he may want to stay like Revis/Goldson, he Has a family to get home to? It baffles me how people ALWAYS have to have someone ‘dislike’ on a team.

Wish Banks was a part of the aftermath.
June 5th, 2013 at 1:56 pm
It’s well documented that revis would take practice squad dbs and work with them voluntarily all the time while with jets. I am not surprised at all. Yes, it will continue when the season starts.
June 5th, 2013 at 2:25 pm
nice to hear..
…would’ve been nicer to hear that Banks was out there as well, though.
June 5th, 2013 at 2:52 pm
@ Celly,
Banks is a newly wed with a new baby as well. Joe is only reporting on one day of OTA (the day media can observe). There has been plenty of other OTA days the media does not have access to. Therefore, we do not know if Banks is working extra or not. Buc fans, please stop reading so much into “one” occurrence. I am sure Banks will take advantage of Revis and Goldson’s knowledge and extra assistance throughout the year.

Gorrer better stay even later after practice and offer to sweep the floors and clean the toilets if he wants to be on the team as he was awful last year, despite the “progress” the alleged “rock star” says he saw.

Let me get this straight. Our GM brings in two pro-bowl players, one of whom is widely recognized as the best at his position, and somehow the “realist” finds a way to subject us to one (pop star) of his typical pair of (JFro being the other) remarks of his very shallow repertoire.

Brings a happy tear or two to my eyes :sniffle:
Actually I think its the realization that its still early June upsetting me….Come on September!!!
