Ronde Barber Should Be OK In 2009
April 10th, 2009If former NFL executive Gil Brandt is correct, Bucs fans won’t have to worry about the Bucs defensive backs adjusting to new defensive coordinator’s Jim Bates’ defense.
Co-hosting today on Sirius NFL Radio’s “The Blitz” with Alex Marvez, Brandt opened the window a bit on how Bucs defenders players will adjust to Bates’ style.
Marvez asked Brandt if Ronde Barber would have trouble adjusting from the Bucs’ traditional Tampa-2 defense to a more man-coverage scheme which Bates likes.
Alex Marvez: Will there be much of a transition for the Bucs cornerbacks like Ronde Barber?
Gil Brandt: You can play a corner in the Tampa-2 defense with lesser speed. I don’t know how fast Barber can run. He can run fast in a blitz when he played inside. And when he plays inside he’s pretty good at that.
With Jim Bates coverage defense it’s not always the scheme but sometimes it’s the people you have in the scheme. At Denver they were terrible but at Green Bay and Miami his defenses were excellent. That was because of the players.
