Knee Problem Surfaces For Roy Miller

Joe’s a been a bit harsh with the Bucs regime for not re-signing Roy Miller. Why? Miller came cheap, and the Bucs raved about him and called him “custom-built” for the nose tackle position.
So it seemed like a no-brainer to Joe to keep Miller and not mess with the No. 1 ranked run defense. (Miller came off the field on most passing downs.) But it new light has been shed on the situation.
Miller is hurt. He missed the Jaguars’ first five OTA practices with tendinitis in his knee. And it wasn’t a new injury, Miller told Jacksonville.com recently.
“We’ve been slowly bumping up everything, from conditioning to lifting weights. I’m feeling a lot better than I played [in Tampa Bay] with it last season,” Miller said. “I really believe in the training staff here and they’ve got a great plan for me.”
Joe already knew Miller played through back problems, weight problems, and a torn MCL during his time with the Bucs, and now knee tendinitis can be added to his Tampa Bay woes through four seasons.
Much like Michael Bennett, who was revealed to have a major shoulder injury after he signed in Seattle, Miller is damaged goods.
This doesn’t mean Miller — or Bennett — won’t be very effective football players in 2013 (just like the Bucs expect injured Darrelle Revis to return to $16-million-a-year form). But it does give Joe some fresh perspective on the decision to wave goodbye to Miller.

So there does appear to be a little reason to Dom’s apparent madness. Let’s start trusting the one who’ll eventually get us there. Dom has made some questionable moves in the past, but all in all, he has done a terrific job lately bringing in the talent.

well well well, it looks like the bucs knew what they were doing after all. when you throw in all that and when you throw in the fact that Miller is not irreplaceable, the move not to sign him makes sense.

on a side not, that position is like a revolving door. first it was Javon Haye, then Brian Price, then Roy Miller, and now its Akeem Spence. we need to get some stability at that position. hopefully Spence is the one to do it.

Seems like all the armchair GMs would’ve known this already when they were bashing Dominik for not signing Miller.

I laugh at all who cried when miller was not resigned. That does not mean I agree with Dom 100%. It just means stop overreacting to every move or non move.

How serious is this injury?
I did want to keep Miller and Bennett but when they have some injuries it is time to move on.

I didn’t mind cutting either Bennett or Miller. What I minded was the bonehead move of drafting a backup QB instead of a starting DT. Now we have to put our hopes in Spence…whom no one wanted in all the rounds before we took him.
I hope he turns out good at least…but we need great at the position.
Don’t take me wrong…once the roster is set I’m homer all the way. But it just feels lime every year we see sub-par players brought in and they get a big build-up…only to suck. Yes, we do get great players too, clearly, but any more I want to see it on the field before I give props. Until then it isn’t earned.

I agree with you about getting a DT tackle earlier. when I saw they drafted Banks in the 2nd and not ANY DT left on the board I was severely disappointed, and still am a little. but its important to remember that its waaaay to early to judge any of our draft picks. who knows… Glennon could turn out to be the savoir of this franchise one day. so until we have a chance to see how our draft picks pan out we should give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bonzai, What do you mean by “No one wanted in all the rounds before we took him”? Wouldn’t that be the case for every player taken for every team? Maybe some teams liked the guy but he didn’t fit their biggest need or scheme, How many teams are looking for a tilt nose guy like Spence? Not many. I don’t want our season to be finished this year or next because Josh totally stinks up the place or goes down injured nor would it be good for the Bucs to pay 4 mill a year for a decent veteran backup when they can use that money elsewhere to extend our great players we want to keep or sign new ones. Glennon could be a total steal for a 3rd round pick, who was there at DT would you have chosen instead?

Bonzai: Firstly, neither Miller nor Bennett were “cut.” Their contracts expired. The Buccaneers chose not to resign them for more than the offers they received elsewhere. Given the injuries each are nursing right now, Dominik’s thinking was obviously “realistic” in the sense that he chose not to take a chance over-paying for two journeyman players. Time will tell if it was a wise decision.

Funny – Dom is a “rock star” for not signing Miller who has knee issues and couldn’t do OTA practice for his new team and Dom is also a “rock star” for trading for a guy who has knee issues and couldn’t do OTA practice for his new team. See how you goober works?

Revis is a great player. Bennet and Miller are ‘just guys’ that’s a big difference. When average loses a step they are out of the league. When great loses a step they are still pro bowlers

For what these guys signed for, he could have made EVERY move he already made AND kept Bennett and Miller just for depth (even though they were injured).

For the last time they couldn’t keep Bennett because dequan needs reps hell bennettvqas t by e backup untill bowers git hurt in otas last year. As for Miller he is just a block Eater and I think Spence can do the same for less money. Remember they are 18 mil under and are working an engendering with mike willy and I would bet free gets extended early in yhe season if he has a good camp and starts the season well. Plus we need the extra cash to roll over for next season.

This is true. I was generalizing. Bad choice of words.
I agree with not resigning them.
I would love to see a quality vet DT brought in for a year. We have the cap space and have to spend it. Signing a players for only a year will free up that space next year.
I would also like John Abraham to come for a year.

Sorry, but the minimum spending rule is NOT an individule year rule, more like an ‘average’ type rule. We do NOT have to speng the money in any one year…just sayin.
