Remembering Memorial Day
May 27th, 2013Joe always feels sheepish posting this each year, though Joe does it so the message is not forgotten.
One reason why we are able to choose to inhale beer, brats, brisket and pork and football is that a helluva lot of men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice. As the old saying goes, in our nation’s military engagements overseas over the past century, “heroes didn’t come home.”
This day is to remember those souls.
So amid sun and fun and beer and BBQ today, if for a brief moment, please remember we get to party and veg on the couch and enjoy NFL Network thanks to high price paid by others.
Happy Memorial Day! Enjoy your freedom today.

Well said Joe. The sacrifice others have made is too quickly forgotten in our culture today. Thanks for posting this reminder.

Amen Joe, and well said.
Today, we honor our victorious dead. It is a sad a sad truth, but the tree of Liberty is kept alive by the blood of patriots.
Our freedom is priceless. We owe the the greatest respect to those who sacrificed all- so that nation could endure as the the home of the Free.
It bears repeating. This is the land of the free- because it is the home of the brave
God bless all who serve. And all who have served.

In the immaculate cemetery, surrounded by pine trees on the slope of the hill in the centre of Kohima, there are graves of not just Indian Army soldiers but also British African, and other Commonwealth soldiers, all of whom fought alongside the Indian Army in the Burma campaign.
On a monument at the foot of the cemetery I read this inscription: “When you go home tell them of us and say for your tomorrow we gave our today.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/4521947.stm
