Of course Mike Glennon will get more snaps in preseason games this summer than Josh Freeman. Backups always get more preseason snaps.
Joe loves how some people are reaching crazy conclusions believing Josh Freeman’s days in Tampa Bay are numbered. Take the notion that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is creating a smokescreen designed to grease the wheels for Freeman’s exit from the Bucs, as someone suggested in an ESPN NFC South chat.

I have a hard time believing Dominik when he says Glennon will get “most” of the snaps in pre-season. Are they really considering letting him start right out of the gate?

As I said before, I’m pretty sure Freeman will be the opening-day starter. If he gets off to a rough start, then we could see Glennon as the season goes on.
Good grief! Apparently people don’t watch the Bucs in the preseason.
Just how many snaps did Freeman have last year in preseason? Freeman was 18-of-34 passing for 164 yards last preseason. So he probably took 50-to-60 snaps. But to suggest a backup will get more snaps than the starter is pretty much a no-brainer. Dominik isn’t trying to con anyone.
Backup quarterbacks regularly get more snaps in preseason games than starters. Dominik stating Glennon will get more snaps in preseason than Freeman is simply common sense.

Yeah, nothing profound on Dom’s comments. Starters play a series or two in preseason, maybe a quarter in the last game at most to get their timing down.

The Freeman “Controversy” has been interesting but is starting to get a bit stale. I realize that it exists to some extent and that we have never had a challenger to Freeman. So, it is valid.
My interests lie in other areas, however. For example,how will Smith, Goode & Tandy from last year’s draft be used? Who will win the slot reciever & TE starting jobs?
I think Josh Freeman will perform well but I like having a really good backup.

This is a nontroversy. Get back to me if Freeman starts tanking, otherwise I don’t know why we’re still talking about this. There has to be something to write about, hah!

Freeman fanatics carry on this supposed controversy, and keep it on the front page in their minds.
How awful it must be to have a competent QB behind Joshy in their heads.
That said, if Freeman continues to be late with throws, and staring down receivers, he has backup in his future somewhere. He must improve, and show quicker progressions in his reads.
He did play great at times last season with a banged up Oline.

It’s not the Freeman fans or his detractors keeping this alive, it’s Freeman.
QB controversies are a built in component of football. Solid play is the only known cure. Josh has left the barn door wide open.

I think Domink/Schiano did the responsible/wise thing by selecting Glennon with the 3rd round pick, even though we had other, more immediate needs this year … but as a GM he has to be forward thinking about next year/offseason & how much Josh Freeman will command even if he is only ranked as the 12th to 20th best QB, he’s one of the most talented that will be available as a free agent next year & will still be considered young with much upside by GM’s no matter how tired we’re getting of hearing that.
Saying that, he has to have Glennon prepared for the starting QB position next year, just in case, & that is the best thing he can do, cover the team’s arse. In the greater scheme of things, that’s why he’s doing & saying these things about how many reps Glennon needs, to be prepared for next year & this year in an Freeman injury situation. I really don’t see a controversy here, just managing things the bast he can. If he didn’t have a good plan B for the QB position then he’d just have to write Freeman a blank check for his continued services, & that would be a terrible position for the Bucs to be in, really …. my opinions anyhoo.

How many other QB’s set team records for yardage and TD’s last season? Yet so many are clamoring for a 3rd round mediocre QB to come in take the job. I’m as critical as anyone about Freeman, yet it’s clear that he is BY FAR the best option to lead this team where it wants to go. If Glennon is starting at any point this season, we will probably be looking at a top 5 draft choice next season, as well as a new GM and HC, and another 10 year re-build.

Perhaps Freeman SHOULD get more snaps in preseason. If anyone needs the reps it’s Freeman. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know about developing the nest guy in line but, if you draft for need you should train for need.

Great points Joe. We all know that Glennon is a few years away from his A game. He could be a starting QB one day. Just not today. Of course he will get the majority of the snaps.

There’s little doubt that the projected starters will get very few snaps in the 4 pre-season games. But that’s not to say they won’t get the majority of repetitions in Training Camp. But we here in Tampa love to overvalue these exhibition game performances, especially at QB. I remember the days when the August exploits of Randy “Why Not Minot” Hedberg in 1977 and Jerry Golsteyn in 1982 stirred up the fan arousing “Quarterback Controversies” only to have those two wanabees fail miserably in their “real” opportunities. Perhaps Glennon can play well enough to get a button like the kid from North Dakota.

The various “Joe’s” don’t help to bring resolution to this “controversy”…some really do think drafting of Mike Glennon means Freeman’s days as Buc starter are over…some indulge in the controversy because there’s simply not a lot of football in May, and a beat writer has to do SOMETHING to sell add space…
…but most of the sports writers/commentators know, Josh Freeman’s job is NOT in jeopardy from Mike Glennon. There simply isn’t ANYTHING Mike Glennon does that Freeman doesn’t do better – and if you want to introduce 8 interceptions in two games last season – fine, Im ok discussing that you shouldn’t hold Glennon’s ONLY real competition against him – just because he threw NINE interceptions against Tennesee and VANDERBILT – DOESNT make him a BAD QB….
See, goofy stuff aside, Mike Glennon is NOT replacing Josh Freeman – but rather, this was the Bucs making a pretty solid pick in the 3rd round when there wasn’t a lot of other help available. We needed a solid back-up QB and one with some ties to the HC came available.
That’s pretty much IT…unless of course you are falling for Greg Schiano doing his best Bill Belicheck imitation (hint: motivating Josh Freeman to bring his “A” game this season)…
