Cryptic Mike Williams Contract Update

Joe brought word last week, via Tribune beat writer Woody Cummings, that the Bucs and Mike Williams scheduled a sit-down to discuss a contract extension yesterday.
Joe already detailed why he believes it’s doubtful a deal gets done, but there’s at least reasonable hope.
Williams, it seems, was peppered by fans on Twitter for an update yesterday, and he Twittered out a couple of apparent responses.

Perhaps the Bucs and Williams are miles apart on a deal, perhaps not.
It is, however, fair to assume that the Bucs are not interested in overpaying for Williams in May, and that Williams is in no hurry to jump on an offer now.
Joe predicts the Bucs will make another move to extend Williams just before training camp. The Bucs need to lock him up, and Williams, who is being paid like the fourth-round draft pick he was, might bite at some solid guaranteed money rather than risk injury in 2013.

I have said it 100 times, if this doesn’t get done I am going to have a serious issue with the suits at One Buc. A serious issue.

Agreed. If it doesnt get done, not only with there be huge backlash from fans, but I think the lockerroom could start looking at Shiano/Dominik in a different light.

Aaaaand the fan panic and rock-throwing has begun. Again. Just like with Revis. Fans know nothing about how negotiations work and every tiny piece of “news” gets the unruly mob in an uproar. How pathetic.
In the end the following WILL happen: 1) Mike Williams will remain a Buc, 2) he will get a new contract with legitimate #2 WR money which is around $5-$7 million per year.
How long this take is absolutely irrelevant. Dominik is NOT taking fan polls and emotional temperatures to determine how quickly he should move. Fan emotions are notoriously unstable and unreliable indicators. The Bucs will negotiate however long it takes to get a deal that is the best they can get for the Buccaneer organization while still keeping Williams in a Buc uniform.
Period. End of story. Unwind the panties and take a deep breath. Everything will be fine.

relax guys there is no way they let Mike walk even if he does get hurt during the season, of course that would lessen his salary but there will still be a contract for him. remember the bucs said one of there main priorities is to lock up some of there own core guys and Mike Williams is definitely one of our core guys. if he isn’t then I dont know who is.

That reads to me like he wants to go out and prove he’s worth a bigger contract than he’s likely to get right now. Who knows? I’m reading way too much from a tweet, but I can see it going that route. Williams clearly has the talent.

This contract only needs to get done before the current one runs out. There will not be a mutiny by the players for Mike Williams not getting a contract sooner than later. This isn’t about Dom or the Glazers being cheap either. Maybe they want to see him do it again for another season before committing big bucks. Maybe Mike wants to show that he is better than the $5 mil average for a number 2 WR. There is so many variables at play that trying to speculate why a deal isn’t already done is pretty much a waste of time and not worth getting upset up over.

When a player only makes it about money, I get suspicious. If the offer is in the ballpark compared to other wide receivers at his talent level and they refuse for a record payday, it gives the impression that it’s not about what’s good for the team.
Mike needs to be a little humble here and realize that VJax got him involved. When Mike was #1 he struggled against opponents best corner and double teams.
There is no “I” in team.

Honestly, Im not sure what to think about the potential extension. Mike Williams, personally, wants to be in Tampa and probably would like to get an extension in the books.
However, look at how much Mike Wallace got on a weak WR market. Next year, Williams, Hakeem Nicks, and Victor Cruz are in the final year of their contracts. Cruz isn’t going anywhere and will see the $ from NYG. Nicks is injury prone who cannot play 16 games.
That makes Mike Williams , who he and his agent could see a big pay day from the market if he lights it up this year.

I think a lot of people need to realize: Mike Williams had a bit of a drop off his 2nd year, but Josh Freeman didn’t do much either. Freeman doesn’t look off defenders nor use his eyes very well. He stared down, and continues to stare down his first read.
When defenses can read your QBs eyes, as what Rob Ryan stated in the Dallas/Bucs game early, it makes coverage a lot easier.

Are “experts” weighing in on contract negotiations? This is all speculation here. Me and most likely FLBoyInDallas were just saying to calm down. No one knows what is actually happening and to get all bent out of shape about it is a waste of time.
Your post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Your just butt hurt over what happened the other day. I tried to explain what happened to you but at this point you just take everything as insult. Nobody is likening their abilities in player evaluation to that of a general manager here. That is why you were crucified in the comment section of another article. Not because you offered your “opinion” on something.

Careful Mike! You’re on a team being primed for big things…few millions here, few millions there…its still a few millions, bleh (wish I had that problem). But we had to fix the D….time for him to realize that cost us a lot but we still want him and need him.
And why tweet like that? Not good. Be professional! He deserves to be paid, but reasonably! Is 6 too much to ask? Make him the 6 million dollar man!
