“Top-3” Secondary In The NFL

After delivering a pass defense in 2012 that should have prompted Team Glazer to issue free Tums to all season ticket holders, the Bucs now have NFL types raving about what could be the best secondary in the NFL.
Former general manager Charley Casserly and his pundit colleagues ponder this thought/fantasy and more in this NFL Network video.
Casserly is of the mind that Darrelle Revis might not be used to take out the opposition’s stud wideout talents. “You double cover their best receiver and [Revis] goes to their other receiver, and now they have nowhere to go with the football,” he said.
Regardless, the consensus in the video is that the Bucs possess a “top-3” secondary or darn close to it, assuming — perhaps the biggest assumption of the offseason — that Revis shows up healthy and ready to go on opening day.

it certainly looks that way on paper but I want to see it on the field first before I go calling them the top of anything. lets not be known as paper champions.

It’s May, we aren’t the top ofanything right now, this is sounding like the same “on paper” nonsense last season with our OL before the injury bug was introduced to Joseph & Nicks. So, I don’t want to hear it with this D until I can see it, but as of right now our pass D still sucks until proven otherwise.

It’s sound theory…except that teams use more than 2 WRs these days. Some even use 4 reciever sets.

If Revis is 100%, he should cover the best. If not, this is a great idea. I’d take Revis at 85% + covering the other teams number 2 all day. Then Wright and a safety over top of the 1 WR, Banks in the slot and Barron knocking people out.
The LBs need to step up underneath on the short stuff they account for.
They could very well help generate 8+ sacks by having the opposing QB delay a split second.
Look at last year and how often McCoy was a half step away from a sack. Add in more pressure on the outside from Clayborne and Bowers…
This has the potential to be a MASSIVE jump in defensive ranking.

The secondary is looking tasty, but the pass rush still needs to improve. I know we can get more coverage sacks, but we need to get out of the bottom of the league in sacks!

I feel the same way. Right now theyre secondary – entire team – is tied for 1st with 31 other teams.
But the last time we were called paper champions, we won the SB. So lets go Paper Champions! yay??……fu*k yeah!!

Banks will likely play nickel, but not in slot, I think Ez Eric will play in the slot, Banks strength, is the outside. LJ may even sneak in slot from time to time

Does Casserly know that we have a weak front 4 unit??? let these guys hit the field before throwing out a ranking…. This is even more premature than when some where calling Jfro a franchise QB.

This is a passing league now. Even the 49ers and Ravens vaunting defenses couldnt stop each other.
The NFC South has Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam the man Newton.
Each of those guys are capable of beating Revis one on one with their best.

Revis has had to face Brady many times, I think he can do just fine against Cam, Ryan, and even Brees.

Why does it seem so many people have to guard themselves from getting just a little excited. Man, I’m stoked and I’m not going to let a bunch stick in the muds take that away from me. So many need to move forward and quit predicting the present with the past.
We should play exciting football ….. on defense!!!!! and offense!!!!!!

I think Casserly should stay away from the prediction or top anything business….its bad karma and total guess work but its the off season and the experts are singing.
I would say we got better on paper but not film yet. The guys still have to go out and execute the DEF game plan. I am confident it will be a better product next year as everyone is now more in tune with NSO and the secondary quality of player has risen with some leadership qualities too.
I hope some of these guys can put some Ronde #20 type memories in our minds next season….like that 92 yarder v philly. go bucs!

Brees is three times better than Ryan and Cam shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with either of the two. On some days Freeman looks like Brees and other days he looks like Chicken Little. Revis when healthy can handle all of them. He should also make the Bucs’ receivers better in practice.

It’ll be awhile before this unit gels comfortable with both the scheme and each other.
Once sorted and effective, teams will find ways other ways to attack.
Having no new starters, its on the offense to carry the defense for the first few weeks, put the points up and keep the pressure off.

Listen I’m not getting my hopes up entirely. Do I think this is a 11-12 win ball club? Yes. But that’s if we get consistency from freeman. If we have the same freeman from last year the end result could be the same.

Bucfan, if we get the same performance from the team as last year we will have the same results, it is not all on Freeman. The defense and all of the offense have to show up and play each week. Last I checked, football is a team sport. Freeman had a few bad games and a few good games, so did every other QB in the league, the difference is the play of the entire team. When on portion of the tyeam struggles, the other must rise to the occasion, last year that did not happen with our defense.

We had the #1 run defense last year, if the pass defense is around 15 we can get to around 10 wins. Major injuries need to be avoided for our starters. Hopefully NSO will start using guys off the bench, so starters are fresh in the 4th.
