“It’s A 10-Win Football Team”
May 7th, 2013First it was Buccaneers Radio Network analyst and former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht saying the Bucs are at least a 10-win team in 2013.
Now it’s veteran Tampa Tribune beat scribe eye-RAH! Kaufman checking in with a double-digit prediction. “It’s a 10-win football team,” Kaufman said on 98.7 FM yesterday.
Joe fully expects many more pundits to weigh in with lofty expectations for the Bucs. Rightfully so.
And this is why Joe just loves this season. Greg Schiano is entering Year 2 of his regime with nine former Pro Bowlers on his roster, including roster hopeful WR Steve Smith. Plus, Schiano has a massive coaching staff, veteran players at key positions and, well, no excuses.
Joe is often asked, “who is on a bigger hot seat entering the 2013 season, Schiano or rockstar general manager Mark Dominik?” It’s a tough answer.
May 7th, 2013 at 2:33 pm
Nah its Dom. If we have another losing season its all but guaranteed Dom is gone. Schiano probably has at least one more year as long as this team doesn’t quit on him.
May 7th, 2013 at 2:35 pm
Reminiscent of the “race to ten”.
May 7th, 2013 at 2:46 pm
Schiano is not on the hot seat
May 7th, 2013 at 2:52 pm
I’d have to say the hottest seat is under Free’s a$$
May 7th, 2013 at 2:58 pm
I agree I believe Schiano and Dominik have another year regardless. I do think if Dom goes so does Schiano and vice verse. They are married now.
ShutTheBucUP nailed it — Freeman is under a microscope and to a lesser extent so is Revis. He got paid!
May 7th, 2013 at 3:13 pm
West Coast:
“Reminiscent of the “race to ten”.”
Exactly!
“Hot” Seat ranking:
1. Freeman
2. Dominick
3. Schiano
This year is all about Freeman stepping up and delivering ***CONSISTENTLY***, period. I bet Dominick has an equally close “opinon” 😉

get ready for a lot more traffic than usual around here come august and september joe. i too feel something i havent in a long time (insert joke here) Optimism!!
Some will be scared of the high expectations because they dont wanna be made a fool of if things dont go right but im all in. its the beauty of loving your favorite team. feels good expecting my team to make noise this year. been way too long
May 7th, 2013 at 3:37 pm
it’s a 10 win team with with a choke QB.
START GLENNON. he can hand the ball off and throw bombs I’m sure as well as jfro…and maybe even read a defense!
May 7th, 2013 at 3:40 pm
Schiano is not on the hot seat! He played his cards well by saying we need QB completion. Which means to me he is not married to Freeman like Dominik is. If Freeman is a bust this year Schiano say’s “see I told you so”. If Freeman does well they all ride into the sunset and Freeman gets a contract and Dominik gets a little breathing room. GO BUCS…
May 7th, 2013 at 3:42 pm
Agreed stevek.
I really think the owners give Schiano and his staff at least 2 more years.
The owners are patient.
I mean they put up with Raheems dumb ace for 3 whole seasons… Schiano gets at least 4.
Also, the Glazers love Dom.
The team looks great.
Now if Revis turns out to be a bust, then they should be sweating… but the last thing the Bucs should do is listen to dumb, knee jerk fans.
May 7th, 2013 at 3:47 pm
IMO, this team is an 11 win team.
I think it will take 11 wins to make the playoffs.
Let’s just hope we win enough games to qualify for the tournament.
It would an absolute debacle to suffer a 3rd straight year of a 5+ game losing streak, no playoffs, AND a MEANINGLESS Week 17 game.
May 7th, 2013 at 3:52 pm
Not even close Joe.. Dominik by a mile.
May 7th, 2013 at 4:08 pm
Doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There is clearly room for more vodka!
May 7th, 2013 at 4:16 pm
I’d be happy with a race to win Division!
May 7th, 2013 at 4:21 pm
schiano knows jfro is not a gamer. he does not want the ball.
schiano bought an insurance policy in glennon. we MAY make it to the playoffs, in spite of freeman. but I see Glennon coming in late in the year like the 49ers did last year.
put the guy in who wants the damn ball!!!
May 7th, 2013 at 4:28 pm
Schiano is not anywhere near being in the hot seat, he improved our record last year and lets not forget even though it was losing football it was better football. Also you have to give any head coach (except a place holder) atleast three years. Rah, was nothing more than a bridge to get through the back end of Gruden’s contract.
As of expectations for next year they should be high, but lets be realist here. We are still in the NFC south which is a very tough division. I can see us going anywhere from 8 wins to 11 wins. 11 would put us up there with the Dirty Birds for the division.
May 7th, 2013 at 4:33 pm
If we don’t make it to the playoffs Freeman walks
May 7th, 2013 at 4:36 pm
Glennon will start by week 10. The pop-star will be fired in the off-season. Schiano will stay. Joe said it himself. Look at all the pro-bowlers, and see how many our boy-genius gm has drafted and how many has he had to buy. Nuff said!
May 7th, 2013 at 4:37 pm
Come on now. Im as big a critic of Freeman as they come but thats just non sense. Free may not be a good QB but its not because of a lack of want to. He wants the ball he just is to eratic to get it done when it matters.
May 7th, 2013 at 4:41 pm
All I know is I can not wait for the season to start.
I am really pumped about our defense and offense this year.
Has anyone lloked at our depth chart yet? It is mighty NICE. Joe, do an article about the depth chart. 100 replies will come your way.
Barron
Goldsen
Revis
Wright
Banks
David
Fostor
Bowers
McCoy
TBD
Clayborne
———–
And the offense, they added Ogletree and Steve Smith!
Come ON MAAAAANNNNN!!!!
What’s not to like?
May 7th, 2013 at 4:44 pm
I have already placed a “friendly” wager the day after the draft for 11 wins or better. I set the floor at 8-8 as the absolute worst the Bucs will do. But my prediction is, and you heard it here first. I will copy and paste this out of the archives after the season if I have to, but I’m saying 13-3!!!!! BOOK IT!!
May 7th, 2013 at 4:47 pm
Some serious smoking going on in here.
10 wins? That’s if the mirage Freeman from 2010 shows up. But he won’t. This team is 8-8 unless they go completely injury free- which NEVER happens.
Teams with good QBs win 10 games.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:00 pm
Also, Schiano is only on the hot seat if we win 7 games or less.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:05 pm
People keep talking about the freeman from 2010. Want the reality of it? Freeman was only good against poor defenses. He padded his stats gainst the weak and played horrible to “meh” against the better teams.
I hate to say it but Dom might have taken some heat off his seat by drafting glennon. He’s got a back up option if freeman falters.
Schiano is safe. Freeman’s seat is probably the hottest in the nfl right now. Dom and schiano have a strong team and added depth and talent on defense. The offense around freeman is very good so no excuses there.
If Glennon comes in and gets a grasp of the playbook early that will speak volumes.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:17 pm
Free’s seat is scorching
Dom’s slate is clean after this offseason doing exactly what the owners ASKED of him. 😉
Schiano’s 1 season in. Nuff said there.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:30 pm
Schiano to me is the only one safe unless they just have a miserable year. I think Free has to play consistant football or he’s gone. Anything less than 7 wins means goodbye to Dom.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:47 pm
After this draft you can say that IF Free doesn’t work out Glennon is effectively both Dom and Schiano’s lifeline unless somehow they’re in position to draft Johnny Football or Bridgewater next draft.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:52 pm
Freeman has the talent & drive to be a pro bowler. He’ll turn in a good to great season. I see 10-11 wins. I see this division being tough as heck this season. 12-13 wins the division.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:56 pm
Tahj Boyd >>>>>>>>>Bridgewater. By a lot.
May 7th, 2013 at 5:59 pm
No way Schiano gets canned after two years. Otherwise he’ll go back to coaching college and collect two paychecks for three more years since the Glazers will still have to pay him.
May 7th, 2013 at 6:07 pm
saying this is a 10 win team is all well and good, but let me remind everyone that injuries are the great equalizer. typically having a great team is not enough, you also have to be relatively injury free to have any shot at making the playoffs. with all that said, injuries are just something you cannot predict.
heres to hoping for a healthy bucs team next season.
May 7th, 2013 at 6:22 pm
I say Sullivan, Freeman, and Dominik, will all be on the hot seat, if we do not win.
Teams last year had figured out our offense, you could see it clearly, in some of the games.
Free must be more consistent, and the bottom line is, Dom’s draft picks and free agents best produce a winning year, or Tampa will need a scapegoat, and guess who it will be ?
On paper, we look really good, we have improved, but so have the other teams!
We have a really tuff schedule this year.
It is never “easy” in the NFL.
But, I too am optimistic, and I say GO BUCS !
May 7th, 2013 at 6:26 pm
@Joe. Could you look up the Glazer comments about there patience if the GM was looking and planning long term then they would also. If they planned short term than that is what would be expected out of them. Dominik is sitting on a powder keg with fuses sticking out all round, Freeman-Revis-Goldson-Write-Barron-Nicks; need I say more? Dominik may regret his pushing # 20 to the curb. What he needs is a good dose of his own Medicine.
May 7th, 2013 at 6:53 pm
Ronde is more than welcome back nothing more could have been asked of him with or without the new additions.
May 7th, 2013 at 6:56 pm
@LadyZ
Why do you keep refering to this idiotic notion that Dom is pushing Ronde out the door?
May 7th, 2013 at 7:02 pm
Couch,
Ladyz has to be trolling cause the notion of Dom pushing him out the door is absolutely ridiculous.
May 7th, 2013 at 7:09 pm
Agreed!
May 7th, 2013 at 9:43 pm
How exactly is Dominik pushing Barber to the curb? If anything, Barber is forcing Dominik and Schiano’s hands.
The whole NFL isn’t going to wait until Ronde makes a decision before players start choosing teams and a draft is held. Dominik and Schiano have been more than fair to Barber in allowing him to set his own schedule to make a decision. Most teams would have already washed their hands of him by now.
Even Brett Favre is wondering why Barber is dragging his feet.
May 8th, 2013 at 12:21 am
7-9 no d line and one good LB. We have two safeties that cant cover and Barron isn’t a good open field tackler. Teams will take Josh’s first read away and then he will get foggy. Revis wont be 100 per until 10th game.
D line will get 20 sacks lowest in the NFL
May 8th, 2013 at 12:29 am
Dominick is a good GM..his drafts make complete sense at the time but the players crap out..Schiano will pounce on the chance to use Glennon if Free falters. Its is known..Schiano wants to win and we have all the pieces on paper barring injuries..I see Free getting pulled and us making the wildcard..
May 8th, 2013 at 4:46 am
Boyd is overrated. With the receivers he had, his number should have been a lot better.
May 8th, 2013 at 6:41 am
My hope is that we are all on “hot seats” this year and filling up the stands with actual Bucs fans. Of course these new theater style seats can’t match the temperature of the old aluminum benches. Still have mine.
May 8th, 2013 at 7:06 am
Im going on record with 9 or 10 wins and playoffs….deep into the playoffs (as long as Revis and McCoy are healthy and playing well).
The main key though, as most have eluded to, is Freeman. But to his defense, he also needs better play calls as to not be so predictable by DC’s as they were last year. That responsibility falls on Schiano. I think he just needed to get his feet wet with his rookie year as HC. This year and the following 4? Its on bishes 🙂
