The Possibility Of Moving Back Into First Round
April 25th, 2013Yes, Joe touched on this before, but he further scoured Mike Mayock’s lone and only NFL mock draft which was released last night. By the looks of things, there are some really decent players falling out of the first round.
(Everyone else doing mock drafts can just stop now. When Mayock releases his, mocking has come to a halt.)
They include defensive end Tank Carradine, defensive tackles Kawann Short and Johnathan Hankins, as well as cornerbacks Blidi Wreh-Wilson, B.W. Webb and the Mississippi State boys Johnthan Banks and Darius Sray.
While Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has stated he has ammunition to trade back up in the first round, but Joe asks, “Why?”
Now Joe has learned the Bucs love how deep the cornerback talent is through three rounds. If, say, Carradine slips to the second round, it may make more sense for Dominik to grab a guy who has a chance to be a beastly pass rusher. We all know Dominik likes to gamble with second-round picks.
The way Joe is looking at it, there may be so many good players at positions the Bucs need in the second round, Dominik could just stay pat.

Or move back into the second.

Why ask why? To such a simple anwser. Why would a team move into the first? Hmm lets see. 5 year contracts opposed to 4 year deals round 2 and on. Oh and the biggest difference. 1st round talent opposed to middle/late 2nd round talent is a big difference. High percentage chance to draft a stud is clearly in the 1st. So that’s “why”
Mark dominik isent ignorant and will explore all options. Moving into the first round for a 4th? And a 6th? Still have a pick in every round. Only cost a 4th last year and look how well Doug Martin turned out/

If Mike Mayock is correct and Star falls to late teens and Xavier Rhodes falls to 29, there’s a definite chance Dominik moves up. From the reports you’ve posted about what they wanted at 13, 2 of the 3 players fall. That could be a situation where he wants to move up.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:05 am
I honestly think it’s whether a small, unknown list of players falls. Say the likes of Trufant, Richardson, Star and maybe a 1 or 2 others. The liklihood of them falling is remote, BUT…if they do, Mark will move.
STL wants to trade back from 22…and Fisher had Blount once before, keep that in mind as part of a package deal to move up. Granted 22 is a little high, but if we REALLY liked somebody….it’s a nice spot.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:11 am
Is there really that much difference in the abilities of Star and Hankins (who will likely be there at 43)? Just asking.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:22 am
I’d much rather us get DT than DE, but Carradine could be a monster. I doubt he’ll be there in the 2nd, but if he is I could see the BPA argument for him.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:22 am
Oldguy – yes. I like Hankins and would love him here, but Star is going to be a star.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:25 am
I think, with all the guys that are not worthy of a first round pick, it is more likely we move up into the second round again.
But with Dominick you never know.
btw, Browns taking a QB according to Mayock…I think he’s wrong. And I HOPE he is wrong with his 25th pick prediction.

Mayock has DT Sylvester Williams going to the Vikings at #25. I could see Dominick making this trade in order to get him since he’s a Butch Davis guy…and Davis is the guy that knows talent (aside from Schiano).
April 25th, 2013 at 11:36 am
Vvvveeeerrrryyyy interesting.
Joe knows that Butch Davis is part of the Bucs’ draft war room.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:38 am
Defensive end is not a position of need. Period. End of friggin’ story.
April 25th, 2013 at 11:38 am
Sylvester Williams would be a fantastic pick up if we can swing it without losing too much in a trade.
April 25th, 2013 at 12:20 pm
I think Dom stands pat and takes TE Zach Ertz, then trades next year’s 2nd and this years 3rd to get another 2nd rounder and get Trufant or Hayden.
April 25th, 2013 at 12:26 pm
I see Tampa moving up in this draft, in an all out effort to win now.
The pressure had been on Dominik to win now, and with the Revis acquisition, even more so now.
April 25th, 2013 at 12:41 pm
@andres I don’t think Ertz drops that far. We would to trade up to get him.
April 25th, 2013 at 12:57 pm
Here is my final adjusted mock. I do these more for fun to see how many I get right. Strictly Bucs picks, and barring trades.
I am very certain Dominick will do a trade…he does pretty much every year. Unfortunately, predicting which direction or with whom is always the challenge.
I believe many players will unexpectedly fall in this draft, and my picks reflect some of that.
Round 2, Pick 11 (43)
Preferred Option: DT Sylvester Williams
Secondary Option: Johnathan Banks
Round 3, Pick 11 (73)
Preferred Option: CB David Amerson
Secondary Option: CB Darius Slay
Round 4, Pick 15 (112)
Preferred Option: OLB Chase Thomas
Secondary Option: DT Bennie Logan
Round 4, Pick 29 (126) (From Patriots)
Preferred Option: DE Sam Montgomery
Secondary Option: WR Stedman Bailey
Third Option: QB Landry Jones
Round 5, Pick 14 (147)
Preferred Option: DE Joe Kruger
Secondary Option: DE Lavar Edwards
Round 6, Pick 13 (181)
Preferred Option: WR Aaron Mellette
Secondary Option: FB Lonnie Pryor
Round 6, Pick 28 (196)
Preferred Option: TE Ryan Otten
Secondary Option: CB Logan Ryan

If I had to predict a trade though, I would say it was to get DT Sylvester Williams.
April 25th, 2013 at 1:06 pm
@Chris. I agree with you. Dominik has put himself out there on the line and the Bucs have to be a winning team and mayby even a playoff team for him to survive. It’s unfortunate that it rests mainly on #5’s shoulders and arm. Hope his head is in the game this year.
April 25th, 2013 at 1:17 pm
Andres, I don’t see Dom trading next year’s 2nd. Assuming Revis comes back healthy and close to the Revis old, Dom is giving the Jets his 3rd round pick next year. No way does he go into next year without a 2nd AND 3rd.
April 25th, 2013 at 1:39 pm
Dom is safe, he is pulling all the right strings.
If this season fails, it will be on Freeman.
Freeman needs to be consistent and show he can take this team to the next level.
Dominick has saved his skin with the last 2 offseasons. He is really starting to figure it out, and that is good.
Freeman has regressed/not developed/ stagnated from 2010.
“Franchise best QB season” still isn’t all that. It is even more astonishing to see Freeman’s season #’s be on par with Andy Dalton, but Dalton is 2 years in the league with 2 appearances in the playoffs from the AFC North…
I am not sure what will happen if we miss the playoffs, but my guess would be the QB position would be the first addressed.
April 25th, 2013 at 1:41 pm
@Gusjackson you’re prolly right, but I was trying to say that Dom moves up in the 2nd round.
@mvermulm 2nd might be too high you’re right, maybe next years forth then? I’m assuming of course that Dom has to give up the 3rd cause Revis was so bad ass 🙂
April 25th, 2013 at 4:29 pm
@stevek
Andy has been playing with the top ten defense in the league since he has been in the NFL. Not to mention one of the top 5 receiver and TE in the leauge also.
