Darrelle Revis Told Last Week He’d Remain A Jet
April 22nd, 2013New Bucs cornerback Darrelle Revis dropped a bombshell a few minutes ago while having a sitdown with Gotham reporters who are at One Buc Palace to cover the Jets’ angle of the trade that brought the best NFL cornerback to Tampa Bay.
(Yes, Revis just had a sitdown with the local scribes and Joe will bring you tidbits from that session, of course.)
Per Tom Crean Bob Glauber of Newsday, Revis last week was told by Jets general manager John Idzik he wasn’t going anywhere, so Crean Glauber Twittered.
@BobGlauber: Just finished sit-down w/ Revis, who essentially said that Jets GM John Idzik told him last week he’d remain with Jets
What does this tell Joe? This is yet another source that reinforces Joe’s information that said this trade was near dead in the water as recently as last Thursday when, per Joe’s information, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik told Idzik that if a trade wasn’t completed by Tuesday (tomorrow), Dominik would walk away from negotiations and turn the page towards drafting a cornerback.

Dom told Idzik to shove it. Idzik gave it one last try with a better offer. Winner….Mark Dominik & the Bucs…..and Darrell Revis, of course!!!

I don’t like to be the “told you so” guy but I would like to say that my faith in Dom to rectify the CB situation was fairly well placed. He, undoubtedly, has work still to do but but damn, Revis AND Goldson in one offseason? We are off the hook with Goldson after two years if he doesn’t pan out and we can cut Revis at ANYTIME with ZERO cap penalties if he doesn’t work out. (Talk about covering your backside.) Not to mention we have one starting CB for $1.5 million this year. Say what you will about his troubles last year, he is healthy with a “prove it” contract this year. You can be sure he will be putting forth his best effort. (How good that is has yet to be determined.)
Even the haters have to admit that these were very crafty moves so far this offseason. (And the draft isn’t even here yet!)

Dom played hardball and won. I’ve been critical of him in the past, but he played the Jets about as well as they can be played.

Still traded a 1st and 3rd for Revis… so I don’t know why everyone keeps signing the “no guarenteed money” tune. Because of the 1st, the Bucs really have to keep him a min of 2 years and even then, it would be considered a busted move if Revis doesn’t last at least 3 and a few play off appearances.
So that means, 2 years at 16 per = 32 million dollar signing bonus (essentially).
I really hope it works out… otherwise, we are out a 1st rounder that could last at least 4 years.

There is always risk. In every NFL transaction. Draft picks, Free agents, trades, etc. This doesn’t necessarily have any more risk than the thirteenth pick. Yes its extra money but you are getting a proven talent at CB. Not some rookie who has a learning curve and bust-ability. Injury concerns with the knee? Absolutely BUT there are the same concerns about any drafted player. Gerald McCoy and Brian Price had no injury history in college. Gerald McCoy had his first two seasons lost to injury and I don’t think Brian Price even has a job three years later. (Poor guy, I really do feel for him.)
Don’t confuse risk with foolish gambling. This move will not be “team-crippling” if Revis doesn’t pan out. At worst we can cut ties with no penalties and we lost a first and third. Not anything to be happy about but we didn’t “mortgage the future” as they like to say.

@238. You need to check your facts. If Revis doesn’t work out to Bucs satisfaction , he can be cut with no more compensation ( if done before next years activities .
