Will Revis Bring More Blitzes?
April 21st, 2013Assuming Darrelle Revis passes his Bucs physical and is healthy enough to play on opening day, Joe’s wondering whether Revis dropped into the Bucs defense will mean the Bucs will blitz like they did last season, like sweaty landscapers attacking a Chinese buffet at lunchtime.
Unless the New Schiano Order really has a change of heart and/or DaQuan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn emerge as impact pass rushers, Joe thinks the Bucs will continue to blitz like rabid dogs.
Revis had loads of success with the Jets in a scheme that blitzed and left him on an “island.” With excellent safeties, Eric Wright (yes, Joe cringes while typing his name), and Ronde Barber (hopefully), Joe can’t imagine the Bucs playing more a more patient brand of defense like they did successfully against Atlanta to close the 2012 season.
Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan made it crystal clear to media last season that he was running Greg Schiano’s defense.
It was Schiano that wanted to bring massive amounts of pressure — except for the repeated misguided use of a three-man rush — and Joe’s not sold Schiano had a blitz-first philosophy because of third-rate cornerbacks. Aqib Talib and Wright were torched often, too.
Schiano wants to blitz, and with Revis he’ll have even more confidence to do so.

Even the practices should be exciting. Revis on V-jax on a daily basis… I would pay to see that alone.

Does anyone think barron will give up his number to revis

Oh, I think there will dime defenses and plenty of blitzing, but not like last year when their defense became predictable and OCs began to carve them up.
I think they learned something in the Atlanta game last year and will be more situational this year! But if Revis is 100%, Eric Wright or whomever plays the RCB is going to get tested frequently!

Not more Blitzes, they just will be able to get to the QB because guys aren’t wide open in 3 seconds.

Part of the problem with the DL last year (at least in the minds of the coaches) was that guys were getting open in the secondary immediately allowing the QB to unload the ball before the DL even gets a chance to beat their blocks.

@legacy… absolutely not. My guess Revis will want a new number, to start a new chapter in his much more richer life… I’m guessing #27 (I believe Blount will be dealt)

@Kujolw84 – I read earlier in the offseason that it took 2.5 seconds on average for a QB facing to Bucs to release the ball in 2012. PFF averaged all the sacks from the last few years and the average sack time is 2.7 seconds. I really believe that better corner play will result in significantly more sacks this year.

Revis will get 23 do us all a favor an put Myron Lewis out of his misery hand him the pink slip personally lol

I reject Joe’s saying that Eric Wright got torched a lot. Yes Talib got beat deep a lot, but I didn’t see Wright get torched much at all

What ever number Revis takes he will have the most jerseys sold in Tampa this year. A new number for him will be best. But we will not know till he’s introduced.

I think Revis will pay some of his big bucks to get that number . Lucky Barron

Roll safety help to wright and u can blitz
April 21st, 2013 at 2:29 pm
Long as it’s not #20

I don’t expect that much of a difference in defensive philosophy from last year, it just buys the pass rush that we already had a split second more. If they get that we have more sacks, more tipped balls, and more off target passes.

It also mean we can disguise coverages more and roll coverage to our weaker corners.

@Macabee
Spot on, I totally agree with you.
– I also agree that Revis will probably just pull out some of his fresh cash and buy his number back lol.
April 21st, 2013 at 2:37 pm
What do you mean, “more blitzes?” Is it possible to blitz more than last season?
April 21st, 2013 at 2:38 pm
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said we were getting revis since the begining
April 21st, 2013 at 2:38 pm
I believe Revis wore #25 at Pitt
April 21st, 2013 at 2:41 pm
Now we need to get a DT, TE, and OLB. And I would love to draft Landry Jones. Dude’s a stud.
April 21st, 2013 at 2:42 pm
I’d rather see Revis wearing that #21

I think the question is will the run defense still be stellar with the absence of Miller & Bennett? I think that Schiano thinks it was more him than the players which is why the were considered replaceable, time will tell. I am excited about the Revis trade and during the close games when the other team is driving down the feel, I will feel more confident with whatever number Revis wears as long as he is in the Pewter & Red, It’s a Bucs Life!!
