Three years ago Team Glazer, specifically Joel Glazer, belted off a telling quote to the St. Pete Times that is often overlooked by Bucs fans.
Explaining how Team Glazer evaluates, in part, its general manager, Glazer said the following: “We’ve had long talks about this. And really, the general message is: You think long-term, we think long-term. It’s plain and simple. You start thinking short-term, we start thinking short term.”
(For those who need a translation: You wanna play in free agency and in the draft to win now, then you better believe we’ll expect you to win now.)
Joe was reminded of this quote listening to longtime former general manager Charley Casserly on WDAE-AM 620 this morning. Casserly wondered aloud about various factors in a potential Darrelle Revis trade. “What’s the pressure to win this year?” he asked.
It is a massive question. Rockstar general manager Mark Dominik knows he must produce a winner in his fifth season, and Greg Schiano is aware he’ll be on thin ice if the Bucs can’t muster a winning record with premium offensive weapons and Pro Bowl talent on defense. Right or wrong, that’s the NFL.
Regarding the Revis trade, Casserly said the Bucs would be misguided if they traded their 2014 first-round pick. “You can’t trade next year’s No. 1 because of the [Josh Freeman] situation,” Casserly said. If the Bucs don’t want Freeman to return, Casserly claims they’ll need that 2014 first-rounder to draft a good QB.
Joe really can’t say what level of win-now pressure is coming from the owners’ box. But Joe can’t imagine Team Glazer passively accepting the Bucs not improving in 2013. (Catch the entire Casserly interview below.)

With the advances in medicine & training, Revis will be fine. This is maybe the weakest draft in 20 years, & if you don’t make the playoffs, both the QB & GM are gone. You had the 2nd worst pass defense EVER last year, & you already invested (& swallowed the “discipline/example” bullet) by keeping your 1st gran investment around @ corner (Wright). If you tank/disappoint this year anyway, you’re getting a high pick in ’14. You don’t invest SO much in the QB, RB, WRs, & lines, & then wait around, hoping you *might* make the playoffs, esp. when your stadium is consistently empty. It’s 2013, ANYBODY can make the playoffs, & contrary to popular belief, the Bucs are kinda stacked…

Just my opinion- but I believe the Glazers are putting tremendous pressure on Dom to produce a winner This Year!!
Dungy was a winner- and they fired him. Gruden was a winner- and they fired him. I believe they have made it clear. Win this year, or job shop next.
I’ve said it before. Our owners aren’t the problem. They want to win.
The problem is Dom. He has totally blown it this offseason, and will lose his job because of it!

Seeing as the last time the Bucs won a playoff game was in San Diego over 10 years ago, there better be a lot of damn pressure to win. I’m sick of rebuilding and being told it’ll be better next year. This will be the Contract Star’s fifth try, so hopefully it’s a charm since the first four weren’t.

Dom is desperate to win, for he surely will be GONE next year, if he don’t.
Idzik knows this, and knows how desperate Dom needs Revis, so he will wait for an even sweeter offer.
I can see Dom possibly compromising the future of the Bucs by overpaying for Revis, to save his job.
Let’s all hope that Dom is not allowed to make the offer for Revis, w/o checks and balances in place, to stop him from overpaying for Revis.

It all depends on what you mean by winning.
Do you mean having a winning record?
Do you mean making the playoffs?
Do you mean they have to make it to the Super Bowl?
Do you mean they have to win the Super Bowl?
I think it will be a tall task to have a monster year this year considering our strength of schedule, but they should improve upon their record.
To expect them to win the whole enchilada now is unreasonably idealistic. There are 31 other teams out there that are under the same pressure with ownership and their fans expecting the same results.
I predict a 9 to an 11 win season, improving upon last year.

And as far as the Revis thing goes, I have this gut feeling it was the Glazer Boys who were hell bent to acquire Revis and it threw Dominik off his game waiting for NY. And if that’s the case, I see them giving Mark a pass if we don’t land Revis. JMO.

This is true. Dominick needs to win in his 5th campaign, and show measuralbe improvement.
So far, in Dom’s tenure, 40% of his wins (10) came in 2010, but sadly we missed the playoffs that year.
In 2011 and 2012 the Bucs sustained losing streaks of 10 games and 5 games. Something needs to change: playoffs and winning.
I think Dominick had a tremendous offseason last year, but this year has been frustrating, headscratching, and down right concerning.
24-40 is not winning football, and not adding a free agent cornerback is stupid. However, I will reserve any negative spew towards this inadquecy presented by our GM. In my humble opinion, after 24-40 and no playoffs for a goat’s age, you need to look at free agency to repair holes.
The most telling factor in the direction of the Bucs franchise will occur during the 2013 draft. Do we draft the best player available, or do we succumb to “need” (only created by CHOOSING not to participate in FA)?
Time will tell, BPA should be the pick.

The pressure to make the playoffs is definitely there. Unless we have a key injury to our HB or QB then Dom is definitely leaving.
I don’t expect that to happen though. Dom worked wonders last year in free agency and the draft and will/did do the same this year. People saying he has, “…totally blown it this offseason…” don’t know what they are talking about. The draft hasn’t even happened yet. He still has a chance to blow it but that won’t really be known until January.
We still have the draft and post-draft free agency when players are released. Lets at least see how it pans out before dubbing it “totally blown”.
The pressure is there to win now, Dom knows this. He will have a fully assembled team before preseason, I guarantee it.
This is going to be a VERY exciting team this year.

Playoffs or bust this year. No playoffs means the popstar should be fired. Get a real evaluator of talent and someone who gives the coaching staff talent to work with.

If Dominic has a losing record I bet the Bucs bring in Scott Pioli to take over GM and they may move Dom to President like the Falcons did to Rich. Pioli seemed awfully close to Schiano in that last NFL network interview.
