“He Just Had Some Bad Luck Last Year”
April 15th, 2013Greg Schiano is a detail guy whose core beliefs are “trust, belief and accountability.” Therefore, it was awfully strange to Joe to hear Schiano say the following about Eric Wright today, “He just had some bad luck last year.”
Was Schiano talking about Wright’s recurring Achilles injury or occasionally shaky cornerback play? Or was there a truly unique situation surrounding Wright getting suspended for four games after violating the Bucs’ substance abuse policy? Or was Schiano joking and referring to Wright flushing millions down the toilet?
It was a an odd way for a tough-guy coach to talk about his letdown cornerback, one who (for now) the Bucs are counting on heavily.

“Only Greg knows”. It sounds like no matter the meaning, Schiano seams to be willing to start again with him. I would like Write to get in shape, work his arse off and prove himself a real Buccaneer Man.

Without paper or pencil, let me see how bad Wright’s luck was.
Eric had a 5 year contract worth 37.5mil. After suspensions last year he collected roughly 6mil on a possible 7.75mil. He can now make 3mil with incentives this year averaging 4.5mil over 2 years and his contract ends.
So Eric left somewhere in the neighborhood of 28.5mil on the table. Yeah, I’d call that bad luck that’s just a tad short of financial suicide!
But who cares about money, on a happier note, happy Fathers Day Eric!

Dont think Schiano was talking about financials with that statement…

Interesting to see what effect fatherhood and flushing all that cash will have on Wright as a player.
Both are powerful motivators.

@Biff Barker very good point. Congrats E. Wright.

The pop-star has been having bad luck for 5 years and counting.

I listen to the whole interview and it sounds as if Greg is confident with the roster of player he has. He sounds as if he is looking forward to investing a top pick (probably not the 1st pick) into CB position.

@ the-buc-realist,
“The pop-star has been having bad luck for 5 years and counting.”
Exactly! 24-40 takes more than just luck.
Playoffs in 2013, or be gone. Dominick owes it to Buc Nation.
Mediocrity, not spending, signing Albert Haynesworth because you “need” him are all good reasons to be fired.
40% of Dominick era wins came under Raheem Morris in 2010. Thanks Raheem, you were able to be thrown under the bus, but you bounced back on your feet. The “true visionary” of talent is taking form.
For every additional Redskin- (Allen, Raheem, and Biggers) victory that mounts, I will compare it to the beloved “Rock Star” and the lack of victories that keep piling up.

Wright has shown the talent in flashes. The Bucs need that type of play in consistency. The fact he has a strong relationship with the new starting FS should help & may elevate his play.

I don’t if we should read too much into it other than Coach is summing up all bad things that happened to Eric.
stevek, I undersrand your frustration with mediocrity. I too am upset we haven’t gotten to the post season in a long time. I do feel we are headed in a much better direction than we have since the dungy era though. A lot of good choices have been made along the way too. You have to admit his last pics and free agents turned out pretty good. Eliminate some injuries and silly mistakes last year and we would have been in the playoffs.
Last year was the first year of a new core. Patience and let the core grow together. I’d settle for consistent solid play and an above .500 season. Dungy didnt build contenders over night. Give Coach a chance.

“I do feel we are headed in a much better direction than we have since the dungy era though.”
Yeah, that Super Bowl championship and all those years of making the playoffs under Gruden sure did suck!!!

AmbushBuc- yup, it was stressful as hell!! Sitting there- not knowing if we would advance in the playoffs, or loose! Then, the SuperBowl!! All that stress building up!! Will we win??
Now- no stress! Pretty sure we’ll give up 500+ yards passing, and lose to every Blaine Gabbert we face!
Takes the mystery out of ! No stress! Lol
Pete422- I wish I could agree. But no, he hasn’t . Wright showed nothing in Cleveland, after being drafted highly. Detroit was desperate for secondary help. They traded for Wright, and he made things worse. Detroit , still desperate- happily let him leave. Dom, for some odd reason- wanted him- and overpaid him to a nauseating degree. Gets a big contract. Then DUI. Then drug suspension. This after a rape charge on college, that forced him to transfer, and drop in the draft!
I’ve already said- I’m all for giving him a second chance. I hope he gets his act together. But to depend on him- you’d have to be a fool. We already wasted years because dim trusted the debris brothers- Talibum and retard J.
Lets quit banking on drug addicts, and get some players in here!
Then we MIGHT get out of the NFC cellar!!

This is the same coach and front office that last year made such a deal about drafting quality people. Team Captains that would create a cohesive locker room. And now you want to draft Revis, a player that has caused more locker room problems than anyone we have ever had. Next you tell me that Wright just had a little bad luck last year.
Reminds me line from the Boxer, a Simon and Garfunkel song.
“all lies in jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear and justifies the rest”
Send me back my deposit money, I’ll go watch plant HS.

AmbushBuc: all those years of making the playoffs under Gruden? His first year we won the SuperBowl, I get that. The next 6 years, we made 2 playoff appearances (which is better than 0-4 since, I agree), and the 4 years we didn’t make the playoffs we were 3rd and 4th in the division twice each. The 2 years we made the playoffs after the Super Bowl, we won none. In six years after the Super Bowl, we won 0 playoff games. In the four years since, we’ve won 0 playoff games. I will always appreciate the Super Bowl win Gruden gave us, but 0 playoff wins in 6 years after that was not something to brag about. A 45-51 record after the Super Bowl year isn’t much to brag about. Only 1 first, second or third round draft choice still on the roster from the Gruden era is pretty sad. The 2007 draft of Adams, Sears, Piscitelli in the first three was downright pitiful. How about 2004? No 2nd rounder, so we got Michael “Stone hands” Clayton and Marquis Cooper. Wow. Gru’s drafts were horrible. The only players still on a roster in the NFL in the 7 years of Gru drafting are Davin Joseph, Jeremy Zuttah, and Aqib Talib. Who knows, Q Black may recover and play someday, Geno Hayes might stumble onto a roster, Stoner T-Jax is probably banned for life, Josh Johnson might be a clipboard holder somewhere. This was all Pre-Dom era. I’m not gonna defend Dom and say he’s incredible, he’s not, we’re 0-4 making the playoffs with him as GM. But the talent we’re gathering does seem to be improving. We’ve gotten decent play from draftees taken 1st through 7th round, from undrafted players, guys like Stroughter, Biggers, Lorig, Blount, Grimm, Watson, Black Gaitor… as well as GMC, Clay, Martin, David, Barron, Williams. That’s seen as improvement to those who actually look.
