Dominik’s Cash Philosophy Could Stop Revis Deal
April 14th, 2013To many, it seems that Darrelle Revis to the Bucs is a lock, just a matter of time before a press conference is held with Revis holding up a Bucs jersey at One Buc Palace (just what number would he wear?).
But hold up, says an unknown reporter for TBO.com. The way Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik structures contracts could very well turn off Revis.
Unlike many general managers, Dominik piles all of the guaranteed payouts into the first two years of his contracts because it alleviates long-term salary cap issues and allows the Bucs to quickly get out from under a deal gone bad.
Therein lies the rub for the player.
Though he’ll receive a relatively fat payout up front, any player looking for long-term financial stability and job security isn’t likely to get it from the Bucs. Eventually, that could hinder Tampa Bay’s ability to complete a trade for New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis.
Now to be fair, as the unknown reporter typed, Revis is represented by the same agent who represents Vincent Jackson. So clearly this guy knows how Dominik works.
Also, Joe has learned doing some digging that all the sudden leaks various reporters were getting last Monday about Revis and the Bucs? Those were plants from Revis’ people, who Joe is also told, are hyperventilating night and day for the Jets to trade Revis to the Bucs.

No doubt Reavis wants out of NY. Problem is both he and Izadick have delusional compenstation demands.
Pass.

Lets use our picks wisely. Pass on him this year.

Dom did bend a little On the goldson deal so he could change on this deal too
April 14th, 2013 at 12:28 pm
@Sunny. Still want Star or Miliner.
April 14th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
If revis comes to tampa fine but he wants much more than vincent and nicks got so im sure he will have to adjust his philosphy to make it work, all i care about is making sure a revis deal doesnt stop us from resigning our young core players
April 14th, 2013 at 12:48 pm
I still don’t want revis to much money I’ll take a team full of good players over a team with a few great ones. He is a waist of money and draft picks
April 14th, 2013 at 12:49 pm
that would be great for reavis he get big payout first 2 years then hold out for more and more and more, i would rather have picks with out the headaches
April 14th, 2013 at 12:50 pm
Good point about the agent Joe, but whoever wrote that also doesn’t understand the basics of finance. Guaranteed money up front is worth more than guaranteed money in the future. Any player that has a problem with getting the bulk of his guaranteed money up front is an idiot.
April 14th, 2013 at 12:53 pm
I realize after watching that Broke 30-for-30 the players don’t understand finance either, but I don’t think its too much to ask for them to be smart enough to save some of those big money payouts that Dominik gives them early in their contracts.
April 14th, 2013 at 12:53 pm
Expecually when sherman gets his pay day how is revis gonna see it hes probably gonna hold out again na I’m good pass let’s continue to built tru the draft and run a little more zone it worked the last game of the season not just for our corners but Barron had his best game so far

Players usually like front-loaded deals; it’s when they get to the back-end that they start to whine about being underpaid.
April 14th, 2013 at 1:20 pm
structure contract as follows:
1 million base
1 million for each int.
1 million for each pick 6
subtract $ 500K for each TD he surrenders
subtract $20K for every pass over 20tds he surrenders.
100K bonus for each win
250K Bonus for every playoff win
1 million bonus for SB win

Revis will gladly take big money upfront…..his injury changes everything. He is a very smart (unusual) player…savy when it comes to money.
The problem with the trade has more to do with compensation to the Jets….not Revis. We should hold out until after the draft and the terms will get much better. Then the Jets will absolutely be in a negotiating mood.
Draft a CB in the 1st or 2nd round (need at least one anyway). If a deal can’t be done, pick up another FA CB (some will be cut). Either way, we will have our CBs…..and we will have all of our picks or Revis with picks from next year.
I am convinced that we can get Revis without giving up this year’s 13th pick. And I am also convinced that Revis will sign off on a big deal with the Bucs rather than test free agency next year.
April 14th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
@kh—exactly what you said. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. No doubt Revis’s agent is salivating.
April 14th, 2013 at 2:11 pm
What kind of compensation would it take for us to move up to say pick 5 and select Dee Milliner? Mike Mayock said that the talent difference in pick 5 is about the same as pick 25 this year. If that is true, most teams will have little interest in trading up, while teams with top picks may be interested in trading down.
April 14th, 2013 at 2:45 pm
I say move up in draft give up next years 2nd draft millner! and this year draft DT STAR! Then trade this years 2nd and both 3rd round picks to get back into the first round and draft a awesome linebacker from georgia.. then were set.. forget te and rt.. we need DEFENSE our offense can score points now especially with the new free agents and our 2 pro bowl lineman coming back!
April 14th, 2013 at 2:50 pm
Leaks planted by Revis’people? Not Dom the Mole?? If that is true it’s Bang ,Bang down goes Scott Reynolds yet again!
April 14th, 2013 at 3:13 pm
Just pass on Revis. I think this move will eventually lead to Dom’s exit.
April 14th, 2013 at 3:30 pm
I’m getting sick of this revis talk. I was all aboard at first but this foreplay/negotiations are taking forever! Tell new york you’ll give them our 2nd this year, 6th this year and next year’s 2nd (1st if we make it to the playoffs) and if they still want more then tell Idzik to his face go to hell!
April 14th, 2013 at 3:48 pm
This whole source and leak business humors me. So Joe, you had to get a source to tell you who the source was? Are you going to find another source who can confirm or deny what the second source said about the first source?
April 14th, 2013 at 3:55 pm
good news at last
April 14th, 2013 at 4:21 pm
Good things come to those who wait.
Hes coming.
Relax.
And if we have to pay Mark Sanchez?
So be it.
We are no where near the cap limit even if we pay Revis 15 million. After restructuring Wrights contract, Im curious to know how far under the limit we are.
We can afford to give Sanchez a vacation/ rehab year. He may not be good, but he is great if Josh goes down.
Just one year. Worth the sacrifice. Lets do it!
April 14th, 2013 at 4:43 pm
Mark Dominik will either get this Revis deal done or it will cost him his job; because imagine being in sales and telling your boss that the reason you are passing up on several good sales(i.e. Grimes, Namdi, Winfield, etc)is because you have “THEE” sale on end of your the line, and then have to come back and tell your bosses that you lost out on ALL of them and got nothing! You would be immediately – FIRED in any other line of work!
April 14th, 2013 at 6:18 pm
Chrispy0515:
The potential flaw with your argument is that it is pretty clear, as Dominik has shown with inaction, is that he valued Eric Wright over the corners that were on the market. Time will tell if that is a dumb move or not.
At least the Bucs had a winning record with Wright on the field, unlike the Bucs fans’ version of Darrell Green, Aqib Talib.
April 14th, 2013 at 7:36 pm
I swear, now the hack reporters hide their identities in order to avoid accountability.
April 14th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
What if the Bucs get Revis and refuse to pay him more than $10 million per year? If that isn’t good enough for him, would the franchise tag be less than $15 million next year?
And has he been tagged before? I believe a player can only be tagged 3 times.
That might be a way og getting out of paying him so much.
Just a thought.

“At least the Bucs had a winning record with Wright on the field, unlike the Bucs fans’ version of Darrell Green, Aqib Talib.”
To be fair, a Joe on this website said the same thing about Talib two years ago.

@BuccaneerBonzai: “What if the Bucs get Revis and refuse to pay him more than $10 million per year?”
As it’s been said a thousand times before: the Bucs don’t “get” Revis without him agreeing to a contract prior. Otherwise, the Bucs would trade for him, he could deny an extension and then be a FA next year. Not going to happen. That’s why Revis has a lot of say in how much he’s paid.
