Dungy Picks Rush Over Revis

Father Dungy talked about Darrelle Revis’ potential value to the Bucs yesterday, but it was clear that Dungy wouldn’t make a massive investment in Revis if he were running the Bucs.
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620, Dungy explained his pass defense philosophy.
“I always looked at it the other way. I thought that best way to play, within the rules now and how things are set up, is to get a great rush,” Dungy said. “It’s tough to cover, no matter who you are, but if you can rush and pressure and force off-target throws, I always felt that was the best pass defense.”
Dungy went on to say the Bucs need to let their young defensive ends prove themselves.
“You have to give guys a chance to come on,” Dungy said, recalling Warren Sapp coming off the field on third down during the Sam Wyche era.
Interestingly, Dungy said he was at One Buc Palace chatting with Greg Schiano on Wednesday, and Dungy praised Schiano’s team-building philosophy.

We need both in the NFC South…..Quartebacks are too good!!! I don’t necessarily think we need Revis especially at too high a price but our pass rush will improve greatly if recievers are at least somewhat covered. If we get Revis (and shouldn’t give up 13th pick) then we can go DL….if not then CB. Regardless, our first three picks this year should be defense.

Dungy is the man. Simple as that. I wish he was somehow involved in our front office/management. I think he’d be a hell of a presence in interviews with free agents and potential draft picks. Players have a ton of respect for Dungy.
It all starts with the d-line. If we make any moves on draft day I hope its moving up to get Star Lotulelei or Shariff Floyd. Yes we need corners desperately but the easiest way to make your corners look good is to have a d-line that is constantly on the opposing qb’s back.

I’m as big a Tony Dungy fan as anyone, but I don’t get his logic here… how does acquiring Revis prevent the Bucs young defensive ends from proving themselves? If anything, better secondary coverage would give them more time to get after QB’s.
Now, if Dungy said the Bucs should take that $15 million they’d spend on Revis and pour it into more linemen, then I’d understand where he was coming from, but this makes no sense to me.

Fathe Dungy is right, if you can get good pressure and force these QB’s off of their spot or make them throw early an average CB can cover. If you look what we are building on D, you can see we are going that way. Two good safeties and a pass rush = better CB play. Revis no doubt would be a huge help but he is not needed if the price is too high.

Completely agree with tony we should be more concerne with our pass rush than our corners adding depth to our d line as well as a started on the defensive tackle maybe draft a corner in the later round but I would defently like to see leanord Johnson compete next year he was defently one of the best rookie corners plus I would like to see us run a little more zone we played a lot of zone in the last game.and.that’s when we played the best exoecually Barron

When asked if he thinks Bowers, Clayborn, and GMC will get the job done, he said they’ll grow into it. It sounds like a “no” to me. I hope they grow into it during the preseason.

I agree with him. I believe the bucs believe that they can get pressure with Clayborne, Bowers, and McCoy. They may feel that they just need someone who can slow down these great receivers and make the quarterback hold the ball for a little bit longer.

Dungy did not say he would not do the Revis deal. Ian lead him with the statement that our pass Russ has gotten worse and that you have to still have a great pass rush, right coach? What was he supposed to say? Dungy did say rushing the QB is the best pass defense but you would have to read a lot into his words to come away thinking he made it clear he wouldn’t do the deal.

is a badass pass rush.
Revis would be nice but it’s turned into a circus, a distraction and a team-killer.
I think we’re better off without Revis and with all our draft picks.
(Unless of course Idgit caves on the 1st rounder demands,
then go ahead and sign the Revis.)

Schematically and financially, Dungy is 100% right. To run a good zone defense a team needs 2-3 very good pass rushers, 1-2 good coverage LBs, 2 CBs with ball skills, and 2 smart safeties with ball skills. To run a good man to man defense a team needs 2-3 very good pass rushers, 2 good coverage LBs, 2 CBs with excellent coverage ability, 1 safety with good coverage ability, and 1 smart safety with ball skills.
It’s a lot easier to find CBs that have good ball skills and will tackle than it is to find CBs that can shutdown another team’s WRs. Zone defenses are cheaper and more effective in the long run. In predominately zone defenses, if a DB gets hurt, the next guy can come in and only have a small let down… in a man to man defense, a DB gets hurt and disaster often strikes.
The best defenses are able to play both zone and man, but in today’s NFL it is nearly impossible to go out there and run man to man as much as the Bucs do and be successful, it doesn’t matter who the DBs are. You have to be able to use different looks (cover 2, tampa 2, cover 4, cover 3, cover 1, cover 0), but most importantly, you have to be able to get to the QB.
The team’s two best defensive games late in the season last year came when the team ran cover 2 and tampa 2 the majority of the games, against Atlanta and Denver. Ronde Barber said the team would be taking less chances this season. If this is true and the team will be using more cover 2 and T-2 then there is absolutely no need for Revis…. just pass rushers.

Fortunately for us if we go DL in the draft, Dumbinik has such a great track record in scoring with high DL pics. Brian Price and Roy Miller are All-Pros in the making. McCoy has been dominant in each of his 3 seasons and well worth his $12 million/year. And Clayborn and Bowers have remained healthy and devastatingly effective.

Pure and simple Tony Dungy had a huge part in saving the Bucs. Recall the Team had went 15 years without a playoff appearance before his arrival. Had the not made the playoffs in 1997 I doubt the stadium initiative would have passed. This would have been joestormfan.com.

The longer this revis thing plays out, the more I think they should pass. And I’m usually a chucky style win now guy. Too much risk, for too short a possibility of reward. And Dungy makes a good point that with no pass rush nobody can cover.

Brian price was a stud in the making till he had a bad injury Roy miller was a fit for Bates system he’s never been a stud pass rusher he was ment to be a big body and McCoy has shown.that he’s a stud in the last couple of years just has gotteninjured its part of the game clayborn shown signeds of a good pass rusher as well only bad draft pick on the d line he has made was Moore and he was ment for the Bates system as well

I wouldnt go banning Mikeintampa based on him telling facts…dungy inherited a great defense never was able to put together any offense whats so ever and blew at least 5 super bowls. The 2002 team was probobly our worst! Not to mention what kind of person goes around preaching parenting advise with his track record?

That is way off base, lol. Okay, so I suppose when we believe one way, we tend to twist other things to our favor. So I get it.
I’m surprised people didn’t catch what Dungy said. He stated with the “new rules” limiting CB play, he believes the best way is to build a pass rush. And he is right. He did not say you ignore the CB spot.
We really need a good pass rusher at the DT position, otherwise McCoy will be double teamed. If we fill that need, then even average CBs will get the job done. Unfortunately, we do not even have average CBs.
I think Dominick needs to get a couple young, failed DTs off the market…guys like a Sedrick Ellis, Trevor Laws, Steve McLendon…these are all guys that showed flashes but have not developed well. Meanwhile, draft a DT with good potential. Let the rest fight it out for a roster spot. Maybe they’ll find their click here.
I also think getting Abraham would be a great idea. Keep him healthy by rotating him in and out, while getting our young guy exp.

Rather, Father Dungy begot great defense.
He cost us nothing, and pulled us out of the deepest despaire in franchise history, as well as one of the longest stretches in futility any NFL team has endured. FIFTEEN years no playoffs. How would you be feeling if 2024 comes around and we still had not made the playoffs? That’s what Dungy inherited.

This defense is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of the defense he ran, so maybe Schiano’s philosophy is the antagonist to Dungy’s… Which really makes a lot of sense.
