Unlikely, But Bucs Could Tab Tackle At No. 13
April 11th, 2013Sometimes, Joe likes to mock the mockers. Depending on who you trust and who you believe, Bucs’ selection with the No. 13 pick, if they pick at No. 13, is all over the map.
Joe has noticed that veteran NFL player personnel man Gil Brandt has not wavered one iota on who he thinks the Bucs will pick in the first round. That would be Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker.
Now there are many eyebrows raised at picking Fluker in the first round. First, that would not address the many holes on defense, gaping holes.
There’s also the financial aspect to look at picking Fluker. Clearly if the Bucs select Fluker, he would play right tackle. Rarely are tackles drafted high in the first round to play right tackle (unless your franchise quarterback is left-handed).
If Fluker is drafted, Joe would take a stab and say that Fluker will eventually be groomed to replace incumbent left tackle Donald Penn down the road.
And if the Bucs do draft Fluker, Joe thinks it would be time to put to rest the notion that Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman needs more toys.

Eric Fischer and Luke Joeckel will be long gone by our pick.
If we select a tackle at 13, I am more hopeful of Lane Johnson.
We should really try to nab a top end talent: Star, Ziggy Ansah, Tavon Austion, or Lane Johnson. All of those guys are top end prospects that their positions, and would greatly improve the team.

Assuming we don’t trade our picks away for Revis, I still think we take 2 CB’s and a DL in the first 3 picks…and the DL may very well be the first one. Richardson.

We need a penetrating DT badly! Star please!
April 11th, 2013 at 8:32 am
Don’t see why they can’t sign an OT from the FA list. Then, draft a DT with 13.
April 11th, 2013 at 8:51 am
I think Fluker is more a late 1st-mid 2nd talent. I could surely see him being a target for Schiano. I would be alright with picking him in the 2nd. I really think Desmond Trufant and Logan Ryan are our most likely defensive targets in the first three rounds of this draft.
I look for us to make at the very least four picks in the first three rounds of this draft considering this draft is probably only four or five rounds deep at the most with draftable talent.

If andre Smith and Eric Winston are still available at RT, i dont see why we need to use a draft pick that high on a RT, i Preffer CBs, DEs and a Big DT (i preffer Star over richardson anyday, also fill the real need at NT), also fluker is a damn reach at 13, he is not that great…..
in the first round im all in about Milliner, Ziggy Ansah and Star Lotulelei, an ok pick would be Xavier Rhodes or Lane Johnson.
Second Round i think Zack Ertz, Johntan Banks, Kawaan Short are real options
Third Round: Logan Ryan, Gavin Escobar, David Amerson and maybe a trade at the final of the round for Tyrann Mathieu….

Rather sign Winston/clabo/smith and draft star and 2 cb’s
April 11th, 2013 at 8:58 am
I agree 100% with Oldguy and Sunny

The guy I want the Bucs to take in the 4th round is DE Quanterus Smith/WKTY. He played for Willie Taggert last year and beat Fluker like a drum as WKTY sacked McCarron 6 times in a losing cause.
Fluker is good and draft analyst have fallen in love with his size and wingspan. But I think he’s a reach at 13 for a guy projected to only play RT.
Smith on the other hand would be a steal in round 4 and led the nation in sacks before he was hurt in November. He is worth the pick even if he was stored away on preseason PUP. Worth a ride over to USF and get the G2 from Taggert on this guy!

If no viable D-Lineman or CB is available I oculd see them using one of the LTs as trade bait. There are ALOT of teams willing to move up for LTs. They could drop just a little and still get thier man and gain a 3rd (possibly to replace what they lose if the Revis deal takes place)
April 11th, 2013 at 9:26 am
Just seen on the mans network mcshay has star going 2nd overall
April 11th, 2013 at 9:32 am
I don’t think this is a bad idea….Besides Milliner, the CB class is all about the same level of talent. Why reach for a second round CB at #13 overall? There will be plenty of CB’s in the second round or trade back up into the 1st to grab one. I think TE will (hopefully) be DC Johnson from Rutgers (Obvious reasons) tremendous athlete but lacks “Great route running” that can be taught very easily, ask Demaruas Thomas. We can grab him late. DT can be addressed, but I don’t think it’s as big of a need as people think, we have a pretty solid line with McCoy, Bowers and Claiborne. In a perfect world, I would love the Bucs to trade up for Floyd, dude is a monster. I am not big on Star, heart condition scares me, we don’t need another Gaines Adams.

Heart has been clear problems arose cause of infection non issue

I’m a Jet fan and I’ve been trolling this site for the past two weeks. First of all I just want to say most of you are downgrading a super star athlete in Darrelle Revis. Sure Revis is coming off an injury but coming back from a torn acl is very common now a days. Revis is the next best thing to Deion Sanders. Is he worth a 1st rounder? Absolutely. Is worth 2 first rounders? Sure is. You’re getting a premier player who shuts out the best receivers in the game. And with a solid pass rush you’re instantly a top 5 defense. Drafting in the first round isn’t always a given that you’ll end up with a good player. This trade is almost inevitable. Whether we get a two 1st rounders or a 1st 2nd and a complimentary pick it doesn’t matter. You guys are receiving easily the best defender in the game.
April 11th, 2013 at 9:47 am
If the Bucs don’t take a CB in the first round, the rest of their moves will be too predictable. It will go CB, DT, CB, DE, QB with the first 5 picks…unless Dom trades up again.
April 11th, 2013 at 9:53 am
With the Blitz Schemes Schiano and Sherridan our trying to run, it wouldn’t suprise me to see them take a Jarvis Jones. We need a starting SLB who can come in right away. This pick helps improve the pass rush and position of need.

I dont think an offensive lineman is refered to as a “toy”. Thats like calling a child’s pillow his “toy”.
Sure he protects the the QB, but in no way is he a “toy”.
April 11th, 2013 at 9:57 am
Sirus I won’t mind that although I think DT is needed but can be fix with someone like a Semore I was also surprised they didn’t at less look at Kelly who signed with the pats which tells me DT in going on happen this draft just what round
April 11th, 2013 at 10:01 am
Agree on the FA OT route.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:02 am
I do see the bucs taking a LT in next years draft to have the eventual replacement for Penn
April 11th, 2013 at 10:05 am
In the second round maybe. At 13? Buhahahahahahahaa. No.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:05 am
There’s a good chance the FAs still on the market will remain there until after the draft, and then teams who weren’t able to draft guys they were interested in will sign those guys. I’d imagine we’ll take that approach with the OT position.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:06 am
And Fluker is a pure RT in my opinion, not a LT. He will likely be a very good RT, but you just don’t take a guy who can only play RT at 13. It is crazy.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:15 am
Are you kidding? Dominick is already committed to wasting the #13 on Revis!
April 11th, 2013 at 10:21 am
Even if Bucs take a tackle, it will be someone that is primarily a pass protector like Fisher or Johnson. Fluker is an extreme reach at 13 and gets beaten easily by pass rushers with quickness and speed off the edge. It is more likely he is available in 2nd round and if he is, he should be a Buc. Trueblood was just falsely popular for being a mauler, but Fluker is legit in that regard.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:54 am
Honestly with how our 1st round picks usually end up… I would rather trade that to the jets then the later rounds. Notice I said usually.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:56 am
Sunny
We could get a Kwame Geathers DT in the 3rd maybe 4th round. He’d be a solid NT for us. Jones would be great with McCoy,Bowers, and Clayborn. He’d also fills the strong side linebacker position.
April 11th, 2013 at 10:56 am
I also noticed I said “then” instead of the correct “than”. /sigh
April 11th, 2013 at 11:07 am
I hoping for Mathieu in th 3rd
April 11th, 2013 at 11:09 am
I’m hoping for Mathieu to any other team but Tampa in any round.
April 11th, 2013 at 12:04 pm
He has big upside he could have been a first rounder he he played out the season he has first round talent and was a runner up for the heisman
April 11th, 2013 at 4:25 pm
Joe can you please stop calling grown men “toys”?
April 11th, 2013 at 5:04 pm
neal:
Sure, when NFL executives stop calling grown men “toys.”
