Bucs Retain Eric Wright; Restructure Contract

April 9th, 2013

Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has retained troubled cornerback Eric Wright for another year, the team announced in a press release this evening.

Wright’s contract was restructured, per the press release. Details were not included.

So consider this Dominik’s first shot across the bow at the Jets who are trying to fleece the Bucs for multiple picks, including this year’s overall No. 13 pick, for cornerback Darrelle Revis.

As Joe has stated many times before, the Bucs have all the leverage in trying to obtain Revis. Jets general manager John Idzik’s jewels just got tighter in the vice.

Now if the Bucs draft a pair of corners in the draft, as Joe stated yesterday, watch the price for Revis drop like the price of Easter candy in May.

The Jets need to trade Revis more than the Bucs need to obtain him.

It’s also clear Dominik thought Wright was as talented as any of the free agent corners on the market.

Hopefully the Rock star has not overpaid….again for EW.

  2. Bucnnole Says:

This was done because “Rock Bum” Dominick has everything riding on Revis that he passed on all the available corners this off season. Even the worst free agent would have been an upgrade over what we have. Wright hasn’t proved he is a good corner, not for the Browns, not for the Lions, and certainly not for the Bucs. Piss poor front office work Dom.

  3. Robbie_G Says:

Good play Dom. Now, tell the J_E_S_T(oops) to pound sand or take a 2nd rounder. Draft time is upon us my fellow Bucs fans.

  4. canadianbuc Says:

    WOW that was Penns news……………..

  5. Joe Says:

Even the worst free agent would have been an upgrade over what we have.

    Apparently Dominik does not agree.

  6. Gus Says:

Penn….you got me. I thought it was something big. Jerk lol

  7. JBsk Says:

    E. Write don’t disapoint us again this year. Time to prove you are a Bucanner Man.

  8. JJ1977 Says:

That’s!! The big news, who gives a crap.

  9. TrueBlue Says:

This was predictable. Kudos to Dom. When he holds good cards he knows how to play them. Wright overplayed his hand and Dom got some over paid gold back. Now the Jets are trying to bluff with too little in the hole. Dom will win this one too. It’s fun to see the Rock Star at work.

  10. MadMax Says:

Thats good news…..glad he restructered. Now to see how much we saved and can apply elsewhere.

  11. Buc Wilder Says:

Damn, I was hoping we signed another kicker

  12. tampabaybucfan Says:

This is a good move….part of Plan B….and can work also with Plan A (Revis)….I think we will see a different Eric Wright this year….(playing for his career with a 1 year deal)….
Relax….have patience….and ease off of Dominik….he will do just fine.
There will be several other CBs on the market that are currently sitting on teams that will be cut before the season.
We have all of the leverage with the Jets….and…I think they know it.

  13. MadMax Says:

Now we need to trade up for Milliner….dont use those extra picks for revis….we’ll get him next year if we even still need him.

In case anyone missed it, here’s the sports science video on Milliner.

That means it was no deal if it’s after the draft and that wouldn’t bother me at all!

  15. Kurius Boy Says:

Great move. Just need to give Jets a 2nd round for Revis, and draft 2 more CB’s, DT, and LB. Then were set.

  16. ShutTheBucUp Says:

    Yay! We signed a cornerback!!!!

  17. bucobruce Says:

Bucs 2013 2014 Super Bowl Champs. You heard it here first,so when they do it don’t say nobody could of called this because I did and do every day this offseason.GO TAMPA

  18. Brandon Says:

Is this the Penn news or was it the announcement that The Great American Buffet has extended their hours to 1AM?

  19. jb Says:

“It’s also clear Dominik thought Wright was as talented as any of the free agent corners on the market.”

If this is the case, Dominick wasn’t watching the same games we were watching @ Raymond James last season! How was he any better than Leonard Johnson? He might be taller, but that’s about it! Not to mention Leonard was an undrafted rookie! What was Wright’s excuse?

  20. Tom Says:

If it was Mark Dominik’s goal to get me to actually look forward to the moment that Eric Wright returned, he succeeded. Congrats Dom, your plan has been a rousing success, not only for me but for the adderal dealers and cab drivers of Hillsborough County. Everyone can share the joy of wright’s return.

  21. Jeagan1999 Says:

This is actually not a bad move. Wright does have some skill and this allows us to walk away from the Jets and Revis if we want to. Personally, I would rather draft a young CB in the second round, Move Ronde to nickel back, get Lotuleilei or Richardson in the first round….maybe spend a 4th round pick on that Okoye guy (the British shotputter trying to break into the NFL as a DE), sign Tyson Clabo as RT and bring back Dallas Clark for another year. I’d tell the Jets they can keep Revis and lose him to FA next year!

  22. Ruggyup Says:

The wise mick says, ‘better the devil yo know than the one you don’t’.

  23. Andrew 2 Says:

    deals worth 1.5-3 mil

  24. Raphael Says:

Cool ..now trade up and get Milliner and then call the Jets and tell them to pound sand …

  25. J 2.0 Says:

I will say its good move to keep a veteran corner and save a minimum of $4.5 million doing so. Good job Dom.

  26. bob Says:

There you go!!! now pick a d lineman in 1st round, and trade our 2 nd and 4th to move up and get rhodes

  27. Josh Says:

His pick six at the end of the half was monumental. A good defense needs swagger. Barron. Goldson. Wright. Maybe Ronde. Maybe Revis. Maybe Honey Badger. Defense could be nasty again. I think this was the right move.

  28. stevek Says:

    Andrew2:

    3M is a good buy!

Good job Dom, no use our 30 million and catch me a marlin (Revis).

Hopefully we can sign another CB named Ronde.

  29. andres Says:

    Welcome back #21 !

  30. TampaRob Says:

Wright wasn’t awful last year.. if I recall the Bucs lost when he was out and did OK when he was in. He really was serviceable and is now healthy. Yes, he made a mistake but unlike Talib he’s said and done all of the right things since. If Schiano is really about family then giving the guy a second chance isn’t out of character. Now let’s see if he’s more like Tanard Jackson who didn’t learn– or the countless others that make the most of their 2nd chances.

  31. stevek Says:

    Bob,

I like you thinking. Say, Ansah/Richardson/Star followed up with Trufant/Rhodes/another BPA.

  32. Oldguy Says:

IMO, Wright seemed pretty passive last year – in pre-season and in the games. I think he needs an attitude adjustment – probably has the skill set. Maybe these developments will accoplish that. A make or break year. Hope so. I don’t want to pay the Revis price. No way.

    Apparently Dominik does not agree.

What, 32nd place in pass defense wasn’t proof enough? 18 yards from worst secondary in pro football history didn’t flash a warning sign at him?

Tragically, I think you you are correct. I think he believes Wright and Myron Lewis will hold down the CB positions.

You don’t end up with a horrible losing record like his- without some delusional and confused thinking.

And he has pursued Revis, with a one track purpose, the way our friend Joe has pursued Rachel Watson.

I think Dom will be equally unsuccessful in his pursuit.

  34. stevek Says:

    Tampa Rob,

Didn’t Kenny Britt go to Rutgers, and came back from ACL surgery?

Proof- Schiano doesn’t judge a book by it’s cover, he needs committed teammates that are 100% into the team; slap dicks, premadonnas, inspiring DJs, and Fashion Specializing End Around WRs need not apply.

This is big boy football, even the Bengals compete with “law” breakers and it doesn’t make them bad team mates.

As Mike in Tampa2 said about Tom Crabtree, “Have you read that guy’s tweets, he is crazy… He must know how to really play football.”. And to some extent “Crazy” is awesome. As long as you can get crazy pointing in the right direction, and they buy in as teammates, then they are some of the best. This is why the “Captain” label can be misleading. Captains lead in many different ways, and I am all about adding some crazy to our team.

We needed to clear house of 2nd round WRs that are more worried about manicures, pedicures, and what they are going to wear. Thanks for showing flashes Reejus, I hope your chance in Philly gives you a renown dedication to your craft with a desire to be a good player. Lord knows you have the talent, just like Freeman has the talent, we are still waiting on his resolve.

NO REVIS NO REVIS NO REVIS NO REVIS NO REVIS NO REVIS NO REVIS

  36. stevek Says:

    Capt. Tim,

As Sweet Brown once said, “Aint nobody got time for that!”

I agree with you to the core, but why not see how the seaon unfolds. I know I preface that with 24-40 (with 40% of all victories under Raheem). Sure, we have Myron Lewis on the roster too, but try see and let it play out.

I share your expectation for playoffs, or be gone with: Freeman, Dom, or both. This year is for real, we have been at the bottom for long enough.

We are starting to look like the Rams of the last 6-7 years (impotent other than Steven Jackson, and unable to provide excitement, quality picks, and victories).

  37. kh Says:

C’mon Joe, of course Bucnnole knows better than Dominik and his head of pro scouting Shelton Quarles.

  38. Drew Says:

This may not be what Penn tweeted about.

  39. Sunny Says:

Great move and surprised he signed to cheap think He will have a good year and try to get back up to a big contract.

@buccnole who do you think has a bigger upside in the free agent class this year? That isn’t 30 plus

  40. Pirate Power Says:

Just heard on Sirius NFL it is $1.5 mil with incentives up to $3 mil. I am satisfied with that.

  41. Sunny Says:

@capt Tim first lj is next to wright as we stand and you must crazy if you think Dom will not draft atleast 1 corner why don’t you wait until at least after the draft to start bitching and yes wright has upside and you will see it this year pairing wright with Rhodes or truant is not that bad with goldson and Barron backing them up should be a big upgrade from last night add a pass rusher next to McCoy and not that bad of a defense

  42. bucrightoff Says:

I mean he’s a fine, acceptable #2 corner. And for a max of $3 million its decent value. Still don’t like the guy or trust him, but I’d rather have Wright at $3 million than say Sean Smith at $6 million.

  43. Patrick Says:

Could’ve signed a free agent CB that was cheaper, better and less of a headache.

  44. Macabee Says:

    SteveK,

I’ve been around a while, but I’ve led kind of a sheltered life. Could you define slap dick for me or maybe just give me an example? lol

  45. Nate Says:

Forget Revis its not worth the asking price unless its next years 1st..

  46. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Just last week stevekay said “I will jump off the skyway bridge if we still have Eric Wright and Myron Lewis on the roster come training camp.”

Who wants to give steve a ride to I-275 Sky Way?

  47. Bucnnole Says:

    @Sunny-
    Cary Williams and Derrek Cox.

  48. bucobruce Says:

He knows the system and he is coming cheap, got to love it!

  49. Capt. Tim Says:

    SteveK and Patrick- spot on

Yay- we resigned the CB from last year- who WHEN HE STARTED, was 1/2 of the worst pass defense CBs in the League! He was in the bottom 5 in the league- when he started in Detroit!

Oh yeah, just brimming with talent and potential. We Buc fans are soooo lucky!
First, you guys are joyous over the Packers TE. He couldn’t raise out of Fouth string on their Depth chart in 4 years- but he is a starter and superstar here.

Now- some are celebrating the return of a drug using, worst CB in the league!!

The Falcons resign Tony Gonzales- we get a 4th string guy!

I really wish I understood why fans here seem content with scrapes from the heap- while every team in our division has made solid moves to improve. I just can’t understand the joy over finishing last every year!
