Barber Says Expect Bucs’ Season-Ending Defense

The Bucs’ stunning win in Atlanta to close the 2012 season featured a Bucs defense that stopped being all blitz-happy and reliant on subpar cornerbacks on islands against top receivers.
Look for a lot more of that approach, says Bucs icon Ronde Barber.
Barber says the New Schiano Order has learned from its mistakes from the stop-the-run-first style — and its successes shutting down the full-strength Falcons. Barber goes deep into Xs and Os explaining why the Bucs’ press-heavy defense struggled in this excellent sit-down interview below with J.P. Peterson of TampaBaySportsCentral.com.
On Revis?
“He’d be a great guy to play with,” Barber said. “The things he puts on film, not a lot of guys can do that. Maybe a handful.”
Barber also talks about tackling technique and quotes Raheem Morris as a tackling mentor.

This begs the question… is Ronde waiting for a Revis trade before he decides to come back?
With the time he’s taking to make the decision, one can easily make that connection.

Actually, saying Ronde’s decision hinges on anything else at this point is ridiculous. You can see his frustration any time anyone asks him about the secondary play last season. And with Dom’s inability to get any help at CB, its pretty easy to say Ronde is done if Revis doesn’t come.
Too bad it takes over paying a diva to get a Bucs legend to return.

He is really not that big of a diva, he is not known as a bad locker room guy. If he comes in at full strength he is not over paid either. Besides, what do you care about how much the Bucs pay him? In the NFC South we need a hiogh priced great CB to match up with the high priced great receviers and QBs we face.

What do I care what they pay him? $15 million a year to a CB out of a $130 million salary cap is a bit ridiculous. Sorry that your Revis man love blinds you from seeing that.
And a guy that holds out as often as Revis does IS a diva. Hate to break to you.

If Revis deal doesn’t get done, I don’t think Ronde returns. No one wants to play nickel next to Gorrer and Johnson and a rookie draft pick.

Seems to refer to himself & the Bucs as we a lot. Could be habit or a sign he plans on being with the team for the near future. Like someone else already stated; he’s a class act and the team could use him even if he’s just a situational player.

Who says he is getting 15 million per?
My guess is he will be around 10-12 because of the injury he came off of.
And yes, why do YOU care what he is paid?
If it was up to me every single athlete’s salary would be none of your damn business just like my salary is. I do not understand why it has to be public.
I understand they have to account for the salary cap and make some books open for that, but it does not need to be open to the public and the salaries can be lumped into “payroll”.
Having the average citizen know what a pro athlete makes does nothing but alienate the fans.

No to the extent of pro sports because you still do nt gt individual salaries. You get a maro accounting look at the books not micro unless they get in trouble.

Uhh… the reason I care is because I don’t want the Bucs not being able to have the room to sign future free agents or their own guys in the future. I guess you’re too dumb to figure out that 11.5% of a team’s cap going towards a CB is not a good move. Again, your man love for Revis is blinding.
I have no problem him making whatever – He could make $50 million per year for all I care… if there was no salary cap of course.

If it were MLB, with no salary cap, of course it would not matter.
With a salary cap? The amount a player makes means EVERYTHING. When someone makes a around 10th of your entire budget, yes, surprise!, it effects the rest of the grocery shopping list. You have to start skimping on other quality ingredients.
Personally, if your aren’t a top 5 QB, I have trouble paying anyone over 10 mill a year, especially for a non QB.

If they land Revis, keep Wright and Ronde comes back, that will be a nice CB group. Then we could draft a DT in the first round (assuming we don’t give it up), and still take a good CB in the 3rd round (we would probably give up our 2013 2nd rounder in the Revis deal). That defense would look pretty nasty on paper.
Still would need depth at: OT, DE, QB and CB…

Im so glad that we will be playing more of a conventional style of defense instead of the aggressive style that we played early on in the season. yea its fun to bring all out pressure on the QB but the way we where playing defense, lets be honest, was borderline reckless. like Ronde said its a give and take. that aggressive style worked wonders on the running game but at the end of the day we were totally exposed in the passing game and it showed. guess Schiano will live and learn.
