“Honey Badger” Visits The Bucs

March 31st, 2013

While most people were trying to find a warm spot somewhere in the Western Hemisphere to go on spring break, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik and his staff were busy inviting college prospects to One Buc Palace for private workouts and interviews.

One of those players appears to be the Honey Badger himself, Tyrann Mathieu, the former LSU stud defensive back/return man who had troubles with the hippie lettuce.

WalterFootball.com has a list of those who they have learned entered One Buc Palace for visits. Thislist is incomplete as each NFL team is allowed up to 30 visits.

The roster of players coming through Tampa so far has been:

Kiko Alonso, LB, Oregon
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State
Mike Catapano, DL, Princeton
Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas
Margus Hunt, DL, SMU
Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Corey Lemonier, DL, Auburn
Tyrann Mathieu, DB, LSU
Vance McDonald, TE, Rice
Brendan Melanophy, DB, Fordham
Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M
David Quessenberry, OL, San Jose State
J.C. Tretter, OL, Cornell
Desmond Trufant, DB, Washington
Brian Winters, OL, Kent State

Now this doesn’t mean the Bucs will only draft players from this list. As usual, there are smokescreens involved. But given the fact each team is limited to a specific number of visits, it demonstrates that the Bucs are interested in the Honey Badger.

A couple of other names jumping out at Joe are cornerback Desmond Trufant, offensive tackle Lane Johnson, who may be one of the most underrated linemen in the draft, tight end Gavin Escobar and bruising running back Le’Veon Bell.

been saying it all along , we should draft this guy in first round .. dont let him fall to the top playoff caliber teams at bottom of first round… this guy is the absolute best corner available … then we should trade up back in to late first round and pick up next best corner …

Revis is not needed ..way too much $ and drama… not unless they trade a second round pick this year, Blount… and a first in next years draft…
even then that contract will stain us for years … not sure it is worth it …matter fact it is NOT…

    draft corners

  2. Andrew 1 Says:

you know a different writer said something that makes a lot of sense. with the bucs almost certainly ignoring the CB position in free agency, it might be because they are banking getting one with the first pick in the draft.

if the honey badger is there in the third, take him. no higher, no lower.

it great scenario would be getting a CB with the first pick and then trading back up in the draft and take… TAVON AUSTIN!!!! that kid is a beast.

    @allbuc44
let me help you correct some things…

ummmmmmmm, no. revis is the best corner available.

“Revis is not needed ..way too much $ and drama…”
ummmmmmmmm, no. this fool (tyrann mathieu) has way too much drama.

  4. DjoshFreeman Says:

Truth is, honey badger COULD be awesome.but isn’t a first round pick.too risky and the kid has been out of competitive play for over a year, that’s tough.very few players are like a dez Bryant/mike williams and can take a whole year off and come in and succeed

  5. Big Picture Guy Says:

I love Honey Badger the football player. I’ve never seen a DB take over a game on defense and special teams like he did in the SEC since maybe Eric Berry a few years ago.

But Honey Badger the man scares me to death. I want to believe his troubles are behind him, but I think his craziness/instability made him the football player he was.

If the price is right, gamble and go for him. But before the 3rd round would be a mistake. Don’t forget he is tiny. So is Leonard Johnson. Who is going to go up against Julio Jones, Megatron, B-Marsh and all these other man-beast receivers in the NFC? Whoever we draft in the 1st round MUST have size!!

  6. chrisSPCA Says:

Quessenberry is such a Buc name.

  7. 4everBucsFan Says:

unless Miami selects him, Xavier Rhodes will be our first pick.

  8. Stevek Says:

    Draft the Badger!

  9. kh Says:

    MARGUS!!!!!

  10. Stu Laake Says:

The Bucs first round pick of 2013, is not on that list, yet.

  11. Capt. Tim Says:

A direct quote from Tyrann, during a live interviewing the NFL network.

” I realized that the fun things I was doing with Football, weren’t as much fun without football”

This was in regards to his drug abuse.

So, once he gets to play football again, and gets his millions- it’s Fun time again!!!

You’d have to be a fool to sign this guy. We wasted a first round pick on Talibum. This guy tells you up front that he’s gonna fail.

    We’ll probably draft him.

Davin Joseph spends time overseas with the troops- a wonderful and noble thing to do. The article had 3 post- about a player doing a wonderful thing

3 post. If Talibum had beat up some poor grandmother, 30 of you would have been defending him, and saying what a great CB he is.

The futher decline of western society. It is deserved

  12. Macabee Says:

Like you guys got it right last year. Not taking a shot, I’m in that group that got it wrong too! I’m just saying that Schiano is anything but predictable. Expect the unexpected!

  13. Dave Says:

Hippie Lettuce? Apparently Joe is a scraggly old WWII vet who is sick of all these damn kids on his lawn. Someone give him his Metamucil and lay him down for his nap.

  14. David Says:

I am shocked, that there are not more corners/defensive backs on this list I mean, we need serious help there. Lost alot off the team this year, but we haven’t replaced anything yet.

  15. Braheem Acmadia Says:

Honey Badger…..HONEY BADGER????? Hippy Lettuce Hulligan???
Oh hey Coach Shiano, remember that Pro Bowl Safety you Cut as your 1st order of business when ou got ya new Gig? Remember him?
(( TENARD “I love Weed” JACKSON)) But you’re inviting a Guy with a shot at the heisman and played at prestigious Footbal Factory, BUT WALKED AWAY TO HIT THE BONG?????
    What is this..an aternate universe?

  16. DSZ Says:

After a year of this “Buccaneer Man” bs, drafting Mathieu would be beyond hypocritical. Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about CB’s as it appears we are developing a super-secret defense that doesn’t use them.

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Bell reminds me of James Wilder jr., it would be great to be able to pick up this guy or Lattimore in one of the later rounds after they have their immediate needs met.

  18. Capt. Tim Says:

DSZ- that can be the only answer. We will play 4 Safties, and no Cbs

  19. Capt. Tim Says:

    Damn phone” safeties”

  20. Stranger Says:

I really like Bell, but he reminds me of a certain someone on our team who I also still really like. So mixed feelings there.

  21. MTM Says:

If Tyrann would have finished his career with LSU without the off the field issues. I doubt he would be visiting Tampa.

  22. SeanyMac in SC Says:

    Joe,

How about some 411 on the other guys on the list….feed me more.

  23. jfgobucs Says:

3rd round….I’m in…contract would be contingent on Hippy lettuce testing

  24. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Anybody remember Tanard Jackson?

  25. BucFan20 Says:

    @ Capt Tim
Don’t forget. Most of the fans here have the double standard rule. Guns in an an airport. Ok. Wright took drugs. Bum. Get rid of him. Honey Badger likes drugs. Best DB in the draft. Draft him. Know what I mean. Kind of like it’s ok for me to park in the Fire Lane. But not You!

  26. MadMax Says:

THANK YOU MR. JOE!!! I’d buy your drinks for the night if I could meet up with you 🙂 ….but Im in SC.

But really, Im just smiling and watching now!! I hope we land Mathieu in the 3rd..haters can hate, I dont give a dmn….and as much as I LOVE Lane Johnson (too bad we wont be after OT in the 1st) Quessenberry is also underrated. Just look at his QB David Fales (he’ll be coming out next year too and VERY underrated).

Dont forget, Mathieu can also return kicks. I kicked the weed to the curb when I was 21, so it CAN be done!

  27. Dave Says:

I would love for them to draft Tyrann Mathieu AFTER round 1, preferably round 3. He is a playmaker and can return.

I would have no problem taking a chance on him in round 3 or later…. it’s all a risk, got to weigh the vaule and upside

  28. Capt. Tim Says:

Yeah, don’t forget that 4 bench press!

Madmax- did you kick weed- after you were suspended from college? After you had you scholarship taken away? When it has cost you to drop in the NFL draft- costing you millions of dollars? Not very smart! ( either)

And after that- he shows up at the combine, without doing any training at all( 4?? Really?)

He is just waiting for somebody stupid enough to hand him so money- and it’s party on!! Some of you only like the stupid ones! Birds of a feather. Lets sign him- so he can be suspended all season, and we can keep losing

  29. lurker Says:

i’ll trust that the bucs will do their due diligence, just as they did with mike williams. but i feel it is crazy to risk a 1 or 2 or maybe even a 3 with this guy. some team might, but it is a major risk.

  30. Big Steve Says:

Don’t get your hopes up guys, he visited almost every team. Somebody’s gonna be token the Badger High in the draft

The Tampa Tribune thinks it’s time to “start getting used to the idea” of CB Eric Wright being back with the Bucs in 2013.
“He has been a reliable player,” coach Greg Schiano said. “If I didn’t feel there was good there, we would have already separated from him.”
The Bucs are paper thin at cornerback and still feel Wright has upside. His $7.75 million salary isn’t guaranteed, so he can easily be released at any point.

  32. MadMax Says:

@Capt tim, you’re a funny one. Did you even watch Mathieu’s combine? You’re spouting off that he didnt do any training at all because you’re stuck on his 4 reps of 225? Really? So he didnt show up any other CB in his other drills??…Come on man!!!

So CB’s need to bench like 250-350lb linemen according to you. Well, feel free to pick your poisons in fueling more of your inane banter. Maybe you’re the one on the hippy lettuce. As to why I quit….it was a phase that I matured through and grew out of just like many of my friends did.

  33. berserker Says:

Desmond Trufant and The Honey Badger would be just fine.

  34. Paul Says:

No first round talent on that list. I guess Dom is 100% sure that he’s going to get Revis that he doesn’t even have to interview them and have a back-up plan. Good job gm!

  35. netto Says:

I like the idea of the playmaker coming to Tampa but no earlier than a 3rd/4th round selection…. I also feel that he should NOT be the first CB selected.

As far as Capt Tim and others, haters gonna hate…. Ive noticed Mathieu is highly controversial and either you admire his football traits but realize hes human OR the complete opposite, you hate him bc its easy to hate him.

And Dave, lay off Joe, “hippie lettuce” is a JIm Rome thing. STFU.

IM on board for Honey Badger in Bucs colors.

  36. Froggy-G Says:

Buccs should trade back into 2nd rd to get mathieu odds are he will be one of the first 3rd rd picks
