Bucs May Pay Dearly For Darrelle Revis

While most people are watching March Madness — upset alert, Bucknell leads Butler — and swilling beers today, Joe is still working Bucs news.
OK Bucs fans, should we take this news to the bank? Joe isn’t so sure, but the latest Darrelle Revis-to-the-Bucs comes from unequaled NFL insider, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naive, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, beer-chugging Peter King of Sports Illustrated.
King was working his many, many sources behind the scenes at the NFL owners meetings earlier this week in Arizona and has come to be belief that Revis — who King termed both “problematic” and “damaged goods” — will eventually be in a Bucs uniform. And King says Jets general manager John Idzik will fleece Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik because the Bucs are so desperate for a cornerback.
The Jets, in discussions with Tampa, have apparently been stuck on acquiring the Bucs’ first-round pick this year, as well as an additional choice, which would likely come in next year’s draft. That would give New York the ninth and 13th picks overall this year.
But is that really the smartest way to go for the Jets? I don’t think it is. I think it’s much smarter for New York to try to get both Tampa picks in the 2014 draft, and to push for the Bucs’ top two picks next season. With the likelihood that this is Rex Ryan’s final season as head coach, and the certainty that New York will try one last time to make Mark Sanchez work at quarterback this year, it doesn’t make much sense to draft a quarterback in the first round. What happens if the Jets pick, say, USC quarterback Matt Barkley, and the new coach next year — if there is one — isn’t a Barkley guy? The Jets would be wiser to go for a 2014 first-rounder, giving the team two ones with the likelihood that the quarterback class would be stronger next year than this one. If they had to move up in the draft to get a passer, they’d have good ammunition.
The Bucs, meanwhile, would be poised to sign Revis long-term. Lots of numbers have been floated in the press in recent days, but I’m told Tampa Bay would be willing to pay Revis somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 million per year (with no state taxes in Florida versus a big chunk in New Jersey). Revis has proven in the past he won’t sit idly by if he feels he’s getting less than he deserves. The Jets paid Revis $32 million in bonus and salary over the past two years, and are slated to pay him $6 million in 2013. So if Revis knows there’s a team out there willing to pay him more than double what the Jets would this year, how do you think he’s going to react to being on a sinking ship without his contract being re-done by the Jets? Idzik, the rookie GM, hasn’t been in New York long, but he’ll find out how it feels to be skewered on the back pages of the tabloids if the team is losing and Revis is yapping regularly. Which he’s not afraid to do. And that won’t be pleasant.
Both a first and a second-round pick for a guy coming off an ACL surgery who has been known to hold out — and threaten to hold out — several times? That’s a bit much.
Joe is starting to think Dominik may just play it smart and walk away from Idzik. Look, this draft is deep in many ways for defensive linemen and cornerbacks and Dominik likes to wheel and deal on draft weekend.
Dominik holds onto draft picks the way Joe would like hold on to Rachel Watson in the small hours of the night. Coughing up a first and a second-round pick for Revis doesn’t seem to fit Dominik’s history.
Since this draft is deep and teams are begging to trade down — and few want to trade up — rather than coughing up two high draft picks for Revis, trade and move up to get two first-round picks this year, grab Xavier Rhodes and Desmond Trufant, sign Brent Grimes and the Bucs should be set.
And let Idzik pound sand.

CB isn’t the only hole on this team. Blowing two top picks on CBs? No way. With the BIG holes on the d-line and strong-side LB, I don’t see CB being the only option on day one of the draft. And if you can get Revis for picks next year, do it…

Draft Trufant – I think the kid is a baller with an edge.
1st and 2nd for Revis – I would be shocked if Dom did that…and not in a good way.
Our motto is build through the draft, don’t F that up for Revis. I don’t mind something a little steep, but getting Deliveranced? Uh no.

Peter King is usually pretty reliable but I think Dominik covets draft picks WAY to much to mindlessly give them away for *any* player. Healthy or not. Dominik will draft and acquire free agents as if Revis will NOT be in a Bucs uniform and put tremendous pressure on Idzik.
The thought of Revis in a Jets uniform has to be nerve racking for Idzik. Revis would be a distraction to the Jets all season and would then walk for nothing in return to the Jets. Dominik has options. Idzik does NOT.
I agree with Joe on this. Get him for a fair price or Idzik can pound sand.

Totally agree Joe…. Let him play out his contract with the Jets and send the private jet after him, at the start of free agency next year.
This has gotten out of hand, and it’s time to move on for 2013….. Taking a gamble on Grimes this year is looking like the better move at this point.

My gut tells me that if the Bucs give up those picks and all that money for Revis that they will regret it sooner than later. Please take your picks and your cash and move on.

If it came down to just the first pick and another between 5-7, this is easy for me. The draft is pretty weak at 13, anyway.

The thought of blowing that many picks literally makes my stomach turn. I would not be a happy Bucs fan if they were to go along with a trade like that.
Picked_Off – SLB is not a “whole.” They play maybe 30% of an entire game in this defense. Here is a quote from a Bucsnation article after the first Carolina game last year.
“Linebacker Quincy Black is being phased out of the defense, and he should not expect to be back next year. He only played in the base defense, and the Bucs played base on just 12 snaps – giving Black just 12 snaps on defense, one less than his nominal backup Dekoda Watson, who is on the field in some nickel and dime subpackages. Impressively, the Bucs managed to have a stifling run defense despite playing in nickel and dime for most of the game.”
I say it over and over. SLB is not a priority for the Bucs. They will fill it with what they already have.

Good god, Peter king is a self appreciating tool bag. I can’t believe people pay this guy to give his opinion on coffee and local beers and his traveling agenda. Not sure how many people really respect the guy. I know Joe does and Florio, but gve me someone that plays the game, shoot I will take the CBS gameday crew over the Sunday night football crew, what a snore job.

Well said, I mentioned in another article that the Bucs only have one real “hole”. That is obviously CB. Every and I do mean *EVERY* other position on this team is not in NEED of an upgrade. We can not have pro bowlers at every position.
SLB, RT, WR3, TE, etc; we have serviceable players in these positions.

Im with Joe, Go sign Grimes.
On draft day with our 13th overall pick draft the best player no matter position OT, DT, DE or OLB we should be able to get a instant starter at any one of those 4 spots. Just depends on our board.
Then trade back up into the 1st round and draft Trufant if hes there.

If we have to give a first and second revis is not the way to go. Agreed with u joe draft 2 and sign a vet when revis is a free agent next and has proved he is in same form sign him to a deal and sent the private jet to get him . Cb is our biggest need and do not mind our first two picks being cb. Everything else we can plug in later rounds and free agents. Also if we do not sign a vet we still have wright and although he is stupid and overpaid he is serviceable and I am sure Dom will rework his contract

Why not Grimes? Because there is something not quite right with Grimes and It’s not because he’s holding out for big money. There is no big money for CBs this year and if it is the Bucs have it and if they pay it, it’s going to be for Revis – and nobody else!
The Falcons are a step away from the SB and through player cuts and restructures, they have the money to re-sign Grimes. Dimitroff is a savy GM and will not hesitate to spend money on players he thinks he can win with. Dimitroff is not making a play for Grimes – a once proven performer he knows firsthand.
Grimes has made visits to a number of CB needy teams and have walked away with no contract – most recently Cleveland and Miami and nobody is saying why. I’ve heard the Bucs are interested. Why no invitation for a visit?
Grimes is not the trend anymore in the NFL. The trend is to employ lengthy CBs ala Seattle with the advent of hybrid WR/TEs and their impact on the game. Small potatoes, but Grimes is officially listed at 5092 at NFLDraftScout. The 2 represents an eighth. Grimes is only 5-9 and 1/4. Truth be told, Sean is not a very good CB, but his size made him an attractive target and even he did not get paid.
I don’t know if he’s completely over the Achilles injury, a physical and a workout should determine that. I do know that it is a serious injury for a CB that depends on the back pedal – especially one that is 30 years old. Nobody is talking, but this has to be a concern.
I won’t tell the Bucs to pass on Grimes. I will simply say there is enough there for me to utter two Latin words – CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Not worth a first round pick this year and certainly not next year and never worht a first and other pick ever. This decision would rank up there with Leftwich as starting QB.

I agree w/ the majority sentiment– picks price is too high, & too much money. A #1 in 2014 is potentially invaluable as that may be where the next QB comes from.

I’m tired of it, they better not give a lions share for Revis! The Bucs have put in some good cornerstones, they drafted excellent last year, and Revis is going to eat a huge piece of the cap. Give them a 2nd round pick, and a conditional for 2014 or walk. Idczik will look like an idiot, and as mentioned by another poster send the Jet to New York next season if he is needed.

I never wanted Revis…and the Glazers are not pushing him on Dominick…they are simply saying price should not hold him back if it is.
But it SHOULD hold him back. This Revis deal is on a par with the MeShawn deal.

No way the bucs take Rhodes, he’s not a ” buccaneer man” doesn’t tackle and doesn’t get I.involved if his man isn’t targeted. Trufant is the guy mark it the bucs take the best dt available and trade up for trufant . The “hole ” at Sam is nonsense this is the most u.Der valued position in a 4-3 whether it is q black , a singleton or quarrels before he got good you don’t spend money or a high pick on a Sam lb . Actually Dakota watson will be a really good sam. So Mark my words dt at 13 then trade up for trufant and another cb in the 3rd or
the 4th if tyron Mathieu lasts till then. If we get revis then Wright is cut if not he and trufant are the starters under a restructured deal.

Joe, just the fact that you are saying take two first corners AND bring in Grimes, to me, proves just how good Revis is. We don’t know about college guys, sure. One this year could end up being the best in football. But, not one NFL-experienced corner playing today, has been as dominant in their career. Worth at least one first to Tampa, but really 2014 makes more sense. With Revis they are maybe a piece or two from a playoff birth.
