Trading Darrelle Revis A “Priority” For Jets
March 14th, 2013Just when you thought the deal was dead, here we go.
The New York press had all but thrown ice water on the Bucs’ chances of swapping draft picks, players and wives for Jets All Pro cornerback/whiner Darrelle Revis. And now, with some logical thought, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com believes the two squads will eventually consummate a deal for Revis.
It just won’t be for a while, La Canfora writes.
The desire to do a deal from both sides is there. Though they have yet to agree on a trade, those talks could easily be stoked at the owners meetings in Arizona next week.
In essence, the entire front offices will be gathered as well as the head coaches and owners. To this point, the money for a new Revis deal is not expected to be a holdup, sources said, and the Jets want to avoid a situation in which they lose Revis for nothing after the 2013 season. The Bucs would love to upgrade their struggling secondary, and the record signing of safety Dashon Goldson is not a hindrance, either, from a budget or cap standpoint.
New York is trying to get a first-round pick as part of the compensation, and the sides could get creative in how they structure the deal, with provisions that would elevate a future draft pick based on Revis’ production.
Of all the smokeblowing about the Bucs and Revis, this is the first thing that actually makes sense to Joe. Of course both teams’ front office staffs will be at the meetings and both can spend time together, for days if need be, to hash out something agreeable for all parties.
So for Bucs fans who came home from work and drop kicked their dog across the back yard after learning Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik hasn’t yet signed a cornerback, go out and have a beer, take a deep breath and enjoy some college hoops.
Your cries for a cornerback just may be granted. Next week. In a big way.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:16 pm
I go faith in Dom if he can rope n Revis for a base salary of maybe 11or 12 mill with incentives, maybe rework wrights deal an drop it from 7 to maybe 4 or 5 mill with incentives an grabs the honey badger with one of our 4ths we’d b set an whoever says the badger isn’t welcome here will check his production in 4 years after his rookie contract an smack themselves for not takin a chance on a mid rid pick on high level talent .
March 14th, 2013 at 7:17 pm
I can’t wait for this incredible addition, just wait intil our bye week next year, Revis will play the best football of his career, playing for a coach who can actually motivate!!!
March 14th, 2013 at 7:17 pm
They have no choice to get revis now….they waited to long to sign other cb’s and now they very well may have to give up this years 1st rounder…high price and risk? Absolutely! I don’t like it, But they have no other options anymore..props to.domink if he pulls off not giving up this years pick..but I don’t see it happening
March 14th, 2013 at 7:18 pm
Lol. Revis is doing the “Carlton” in that picture.
Im gonna be pissed if they mess this up. Corners are almost all gone and we got nothing to show for it. Doesnt that up the asking price for revis? Not good. Hopefully they got it figured out
March 14th, 2013 at 7:21 pm
I am getting impatient. This team needs a lot. D line help. Cornerback’s. Tight End. And a legit kick returner would be nice.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:21 pm
IMO this is exactly were Domink figured he would be in, the Jets stalled in Tuesday, if Dom wanted these corners then he woulda pursued them, the NSO has a bigger picture in mind.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:21 pm
This is annoying…
Even if we get Revis, we’re still going to need the following starters:
1.) #2 CB – I’d hate to see Eric Wright back in Pewter and Red.
2.) Nickel CB – Are they comfortable with Gaitor, Gorrer, Johnson and Lewis?
3.) RT – Dotson isn’t the guy yet, plus they need depth.
4.) TE – Is Stocker the guy?
5.) DT – Even if Miller comes back, we need more depth for rotation.
6.) DE – Can’t feel comfortable with only Bowers, Clayborn and #50 🙂
I just don’t think they can rely on the draft to supply all these needs for the team.
JOE, The beer is not working yet, should I move on the bourbon?
March 14th, 2013 at 7:23 pm
what the hell is going on with Revis. every report is contradicting itself. if trading Revis why a top priority then why was there a report saying their GM wasnt even in the building? its like no one has a straight answer to whats going on.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:24 pm
I have no problem or concerns with signing Revis….if the GM and coach think its a good move, I fully support that.
My issue is the fact that we need another corner as well…..Im hoping that waiting on Revis isnt the issue on us not making a move yet.
Id really really like to see them go after Grimes…getting him on a relatively cheap contract…4-6M per year just seems like a win win.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:29 pm
@ Joe
thats good advice for bucs fans. tough to follow, but good advice.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:31 pm
Couldn’t agree more Steve. If the team only needed one starting CB, then waiting on the Revis deal wouldn’t be so frustrating. Problem is the team needs much more than Revis and Goldson on the back end.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:32 pm
The bucs didn’t want ANY of the cornerbacks that are signed currently. They showed interest based on value not because of rare talent
March 14th, 2013 at 7:34 pm
Trying to negotiate when Revis is the only option left on the board for a starting CB is not a good place to be in. Having a legit starter on the squad lessens the look of desperation significantly.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:34 pm
(hash tag) No Faith in FO
March 14th, 2013 at 7:34 pm
@ Steve from Oregon
maybe they get Revis and then have him mentor and teach 2 other cbs that we get from the draft.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:36 pm
Michael Bennett agrees to one year deal with Seattle for 5 million…WTF?!?
March 14th, 2013 at 7:37 pm
^^^^^ I guess it wasnt about the money for the bucs. They just plain didnt like him or want him on the team.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:39 pm
Seattle got BOTH DEs?????
March 14th, 2013 at 7:40 pm
Bennett just signed with Seattle for one year and only five million. Damn it! We could’ve resigned him for that.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
It’s obvious the Bucs didn’t want to pay Bennett starter money and relegate Bowers to a backup role. They drafted Clayborn and Bowers to start and they damn well are going to follow through with that plan. I actually agree with that position. Bowers has far greater upside than Bennett.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:41 pm
Look out….
Miami vs. Philly in the Super Bowl 2014….isn’t that how this is supposed to work?
March 14th, 2013 at 7:42 pm
Or not at all and we will get stuck with the eric wright and leonard johnson show again.. we better get some help in the draft too
March 14th, 2013 at 7:43 pm
Outside of Goldson the bucs FA activity has been underwhelming. It does make sense on both sides that a Revis trade gets done (at the right price) but as others have said we have a number of needs that aren’t being addressed. Could turn out its just another re-building year and not much more.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:45 pm
Wow… Mind boggling how Seattle said… “Eff it, let’s just sign boffa deep guys!”
March 14th, 2013 at 7:46 pm
What i dont get with all these people on this site or any site is the fricking complaining about revis. Our secondary last year sucked we prob make the playoffs last year if we got any sort of contribution from our dbs and now our owners (who are cheap) and our gm are trying to get when healthy the best db in the game and were unhappy. I think dom knows more about our cap situation today and five years from now more then any couch quaterback on this damn site trust dom the glazers and coach schiano to do there jobs none of us know how will structure revis contract or what type of players will even want to keep five years from now so please just shut up and root for whatever player our gm coach and owner bring here. Our owners two years ago were cheap which the were and illadmit that and now there trying to bring in the best db and pay him that way and were complaning about it. Go Bucs
March 14th, 2013 at 7:46 pm
Saw that Washington signed with the Pats as well. Would’ve been a nice ST’s addition. Don’t quite get the addition of Ogletree at this point in the game. Granted that Garrett was his position coach at Dallas, but don’t see him being any kind of priority FA.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:47 pm
I dont know its pretty hard to justify not paying a guy 5-6 mill a year on a D Line that desperately needed him. I don’t care how you slant it. As good as Bennett was against the run and rushing the QB, I can’t reconcile Rockstar’s thinking here.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:49 pm
Well looks like they have hitched the wagon to the Revis train. With missing out on good/solid NFL CB’s, they now HAVE to get this deal done. Joe, are they doing this for the player and need as much as the WOW factor? I sure as hell hope they did not compromise their negotiating position by NOT signing a CB.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:50 pm
@ cbell96825,
I think most posters want the team to sign Revis. Problem is the team has many more needs than just one All-Pro CB, and most of the quality ones have been signed already.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:51 pm
A Revis deal is great and all but, who is our other Cornerback?? You don’t play with one cornerback on the field. And is Stocker really going to start for us? Unless we draft a TE in the first but how do we find another Cornerback or RT with the lack of picks we’ll have if the Revis trade goes through. Hope they have a plan because I sure as hell don’t see it.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:52 pm
Seahawks just got Bennett….wow..Avril and Bennett,
March 14th, 2013 at 7:52 pm
if you connect the dots all indication point to us eventually getting Revis, and since we avoided getting any other guilty cbs in free agency I would definitely agree to getting him now.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:53 pm
Revis and trufant/rhodes were playoff bound
March 14th, 2013 at 7:54 pm
A #2 wouldbe a coup. I am proud of Dom for holding out. Well done.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:55 pm
cbell…And I don’t know why anyone would consider giving up first round picks for a defensive back with a damaged knee. Just smells like seat marketing to me.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:55 pm
The bennett deal is bull we could have gave him that for f sake
March 14th, 2013 at 7:57 pm
There’s still some decent TE options out there. Personally I like Myers out of Oak. He caught 79 balls last year for about 800 yds. Question is how much is Sullivan going to incorporate a TE into the offense. Wasn’t until late in the year that Clark started becoming a target/
March 14th, 2013 at 7:57 pm
Revis won’t practice and will miss preseason… Then all the back ups will be at cornerback during training camp.
We seriously should just keep Eric Wright at this point.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:00 pm
@Andrew 1,
There are plenty of guilty CB’s left in FA. There’s Talib, Pacman Jones, etc. Assume you meant quality. lol
March 14th, 2013 at 8:04 pm
Joe:
Don’t get it. S.Smith 6 million, D.Cox 5 million, DRC 5 million, K.Lewis 5.25 million, only 1 mill base salary in 2013. Ok and we signed Goldson to 5 yr 41.25 contract, am I the only one who thinks Dom dropped the ball, BIG TIME here? Lewis deal and Cox deals equal 44.3 million and Lewis+Smith is 44.3 million. Both more pressing needs than a safety who’s 28 years old and played in a great defensive system. Revis will want more than than Smith+Lewis or Cox+DRC or any variation of these CBs. Throw in Bennett signed for 5 million with Seahawks, I feel this FA period has been disappointing. Am I in the minority here? 2 quality starting CBs was way more pressing than a hard hitting safety who’s not as strong in coverage. I’m disappointed and hope I eat crow, but DOM dropped the ball with the CB market and way over paying Goldson, a safety. What does Joe and bucsnation feel about this?
March 14th, 2013 at 8:07 pm
Michael Bennett agrees to terms with Seahawks (yes, Seahawks)
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2013, 7:31 PM EDT
Getty ImagesThe rich keep on gettin’ richer.
Defensive end Michael Bennett, who visited the Dolphins on Thursday, has agreed to terms on a one-year, $5 million contract with the Seahawks.
Yes, the Seahawks.
Bennett started his career with the Buccaneers. He was believed to be one of the hottest pass-rushing commodities in free agency.
His deal strikes another blow to a worse-than-expected market for pass rushers. With young guys at the top of class not getting huge money, the veterans have no chance.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:07 pm
cbell…. LMAO… You started out all calm and trying to get everyone to trust Dom about Revis… THEN when you heard about Bennett going to Seattle, you are HOLD ON!!! What the heck is going on here.
That was a hilarious turn around.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:10 pm
the jets owe revis a 1 million dollar roster bonus on saturday…if something happens i expect it to happen before they pay that out
March 14th, 2013 at 8:11 pm
Jeez, the stupid has been unbelievably strong in the comment sections since Tuesday.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:15 pm
We let our best mother f***ing DE walk for $5mil and we pay Eric Wright $7mil????!!!!
We have a paper thin, injury prone DLine including one dumba** who brings a loaded gun to an airport (one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of) and we can’t re-sign a run-stuffing, decent pass rushing DE and a real “Buccaneer Man” in Bennett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????
What the hell is going on!???
You can’t have too much young depth on the defensive line especially at $5mil/year.
Really starting to wonder what the f*** is happening at OBP?
March 14th, 2013 at 8:15 pm
There is going to be nuclear war between Seattle and the 49ers this year. We play both of them this year too. The Mayans predicted the outcome – Armageddon!
March 14th, 2013 at 8:16 pm
Saskuco,
Im purely guessing here because as I stated before, some of the thinking at the management level is puzzling. Im hoping we see about 2 Bucs moves shortly that help bring it all into focus so we have that slap your head “Oh” moment. That said, none of the guys you mention hold a wet fart to Goldson. Dom has coveted Goldson and he wasn’t going to let a “golden” opportunity slip away. When you have a chance to get a hard-hitting, run-stuffing, corner leaching Safety like Goldson, you get him. I’m hoping Revis is step 2 but Im not so sure.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:20 pm
Wow that is going to be tough to explain. Can’t believe we would sign Bennett for that amount.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:20 pm
*receiver* leaching
March 14th, 2013 at 8:25 pm
Carson Palmer… Yeeeeeeesssssss….
LMAO
March 14th, 2013 at 8:26 pm
Revis at 80% is still better than any of the CB’s signed. Cox, DRC, Smith etc. He is a special player. What is absolutely amazing is if the Bucs sign 2 ALL PROS in Darrelle f’ing Revis and Dashon Goldson a ton you people would STILL be BITCHING..about everything.. You Mf’ers think everything can be addressed in one fell swoop akin to you working on your 3rd bag of doritos while building your franchise in Madden. Get freaking real
March 14th, 2013 at 8:30 pm
They’re really muffed this FA period. Kind of overpaid for a S and got tunnel vision on Revis that all the other corners got scooped up. Now we got to get a TE, CB and DE from the draft because there isn’t any FA’s.
This could get Dominik fired.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:30 pm
@ Gorillapimp
Bennett started his career with the Seahawks. Bucs picked him up after he was cut.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:35 pm
I agree with Andrew’s take here. After watching things unfold here and seeing all these other CB’s signing away to other teams, its seems the plan all along was to make a trade for Revis. Let just hope we get a good contract for him and that the knee is on the mend.
I think Revis would make a big splash and would help to sell more season tickets. Lets face it, the Glazer’s did not get wealthy by making a bunch of bad mistakes.
March 14th, 2013 at 8:38 pm
I like Goldston… Not worried about the money… It isn’t mine and they need to spend it on someone… But who in the NFL pays a free safety 8 million a year?
Imaging paying the Super Bowl MVP of the 2002 Super Bowl big money… I miss Dexter Jackson.
Tony Dungy is rolling over thinking, “How do you pay that kind of money for a free safety and then not even sign a CB or a DE for 5 mil? I mean you just saved 5.5 off of Quincy alone. What gives? Do they get a trophy at the league meetings for having the most cap space?”
March 14th, 2013 at 8:42 pm
These are trying times hard to understand. But I’m loyal to a fault. I am as puzzled as anyone by our approach so far in FA. But I’m going to stay in the boat. There is a plan behind these moves or non-moves whatever. I simply refuse to believe that Schiano, Davis, and Dominik would put their futures and this team at risk by holding back.
Things will unfold and we will be happy with the direction we’re taking. I’ve come this far, and not going to get weak-kneed now! I’ve said some things in jest, but rest assured, I’m a Buc for life. Go Bucs!
March 14th, 2013 at 9:09 pm
Goldson is a great player. But not an area of extreme need. Our area of extreme need us Two starting CBs. We have none. Not two rookies- that will get our butts kicked all season again.
If we get Revis- great! We have one. Still need another. And all the young, talented CBs are now gone. It will force us to Draft two Cbs.
And by not signing one CB- we are now at the Jets mercy. I think they are playing games- waiting for the other guys to sign. Now, Dom is desperate- sign Revis, or waste another season. We could have had leverage in these negotiations- now, we are beggars to the feast
I think we again bungled building our secondary! Like Myron Lewis, Wright, continuing to trust Talib and Jackson, or thinking a bunch of 7th round picks/ undrafted free agents can shut down the NFLs best WRs. It’s just an effort in futility.
I know some of you disagree, but I still believe Dallas outsmarted Dom, to get Claibourne in the last draft.
At this point, I say we Sign Marcus Trufant, TRY to get Revis, and hopefully Draft Trufant’ lil Brother in the first round.
We could have had a really good, young pair of Cbs. Now, we are at the Jet’s mercy. It just doesn’t seem to make sense.
March 14th, 2013 at 9:10 pm
Ditto Macabee.
March 14th, 2013 at 9:10 pm
we should hv signed cox and waited on revis draft honey badger in third this is our worse free agency ever we need two drafts to fill our needs look like another blackout season and our record will be 5 and 11 bottom of nfc south do anybody knowht we aredoing. hope we sign grimes and wait on revis
March 14th, 2013 at 9:11 pm
@Tampa2….Special player yes, torn ACL and wanting 15million plus a season equals NO. I’m a bucs fan, wasn’t “bitching” was just puzzled by the FA approach and upset lost Bennett for 5 million a year. No player aside from a QB is worth price of 2 or 3 very good, reasonable priced players. @Paul makes a great post minus get Dom fired part. Happy we signed Goldson, absolutely he’s an ALL PRO, just IMO CB was a bigger need and that’s just my opinion. As far as the Doritos and Madden comment, not sure if it was directed at what I said, if it was sorry to offend and nice to see a fan show some passion, but relax it was just a post on a public discussion forum.
March 14th, 2013 at 9:14 pm
i heard buc fans we bout to sign Jenkins doesnt make any sense 3 yr 10 mill
March 14th, 2013 at 9:17 pm
I’m watching. If I like what they do, I’ll buy club seats again, but not preseason. If I don’t like what they do, I’ll watch the games on an illegal web site in the comfort of my home. Dom, I hope you know what your doing…
March 14th, 2013 at 9:45 pm
Now watch. DomDom will get raped by the Jets for Revis.
Hell, DomDom could have signed Bennett for next to noting and could have packaged him along with draft picks to the Jets for Revis.
JUST FRIGGIN DUMB!
March 14th, 2013 at 10:01 pm
Guys this vid explains the bucs/revis trade hahahaha its so great:

March 14th, 2013 at 10:04 pm
If we can get Revis and still pick up Rhodes from FSU then our defensive backfield are one of if not the best in the NFL hands down. We will need some help in the D-line though. Losing Bennett for 1 year 5 million dollars is crazy
March 14th, 2013 at 10:10 pm
@Lev ha ha ha ha ha CLASSIC!!!
March 14th, 2013 at 10:58 pm
Lev- !!!!!!!! Christ!! I laughed so hard I cried. I swear, that’s been me for the last three years!!! Just listening to him talk about Eli, and facing the QBs in the south- even laughing- I started having Chest pain!!
I would have sworn, watching all the young CBs getting away from, that nothing could have made me laugh today.
I was way wrong!! Thank you, Sir! Thank you.
March 15th, 2013 at 12:04 am
Anyone on here saying we need a number 2 corner the draft is FILLED with them
March 15th, 2013 at 12:33 am
Thanks guys! spread the video, any Bucs fan would get a kick out of it!
HEY JOE WATCH THIS VIDEO U’LL LOVE IT

March 15th, 2013 at 12:44 am
If we did end up getting Revis we could always go DE, or DT in the 1st round. Then draft some corners in the 2nd and 3rd. I’m all for mathieu in the 3rd regardless of his off the field issues he has major talent and could be a force in the nickle. With that I believe the secondary will be pretty good but we have to get some better pressure up front to really make that secondary shine.
March 15th, 2013 at 12:46 am
If we even have a 1st rounder to choose a player this year… I got a little ahead of myself there 😛
March 15th, 2013 at 5:49 am
Mike- it is a deep draft for Cbs. But as many have pointed out( Tim Ryan, for one), our DL Did create pressure. Lots of it. The problem was, our secondary played 10 yards off the WR. We allowed the fasted completions in the league- Ryan figured arround 2.5 seconds- you can’t sack a QB in that time.
His point was- the WRs were ALWAYS open- right from the start . That is exactly what you would expect from a bunch of 7th round picks/ undrafted Free agent rookies. That was all we had in our secondary- which is pathetic. It’s no wonder we we a few yards from being the worst Secondary in history.
No line will be able to apply pressure, with those guys playing In the secondary.
If we don’t replace most of them, we will waste another year. It’s really that simple. And so far- we haven’t signed a single CB, and the good ones are Gone. It’s insane
March 15th, 2013 at 6:15 am
Haven’t heard a word about any other teams discussing trading for Revis. That would seem to put the Bucs in a better negotiating position as the other free-agent CB’s sign with teams that would have been potential competitors for Revis services. Smart move. Hey if the Revis deal doesn’t work out we can always bring back Talib and Wright……and of course, E.J. Biggers.
March 15th, 2013 at 7:27 am
@ Lev,
That was some funny stuff, too funny
