Agreement In Place For Darrelle Revis?

March 13th, 2013

darrelle revis 0313

After two very busy days, Joe decided to take a bit of a break on breaking Bucs news by watching some “24” off his DVR followed by “The Americans,” and when Joe comes up for air, Darrelle Revis news is all over the place!

Damn, Jack Bauer! Damn, Nina!

First, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports claims that Team Glazer is all aboard the Revis-to-Bucs bandwagon and has given Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik the green light to grab Revis.

While the trade price for a star player was set this week with the Seattle Seahawks giving up a first- and a seventh-round this year and a third-round pick in 2014, the Bucs aren’t willing to match that deal exactly, a team source said. The big difference is that Seattle’s first-round pick this year was No. 25 overall, far less valuable than Tampa Bay’s first selection.

The same Bucs source indicated Tampa Bay might be more willing to surrender its 2014 first-rounder, gambling that next year’s selection won’t be as high if the team improves. The Buccaneers have already made a significant play in free agency to improve by signing safety Dashon Goldson to a reported five-year, $41.25 million deal.

As for why the Jets, who declined to comment, might be better off with a first-round pick next year, it’s highly possible the team may have to make a change at quarterback and perhaps head coach after the 2013 season. More draft picks in 2014 might give the Jets the ammunition to make a trade, if necessary, for a higher pick depending on how many quarterbacks are available in the 2014 draft. For instance, Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville is projected by many analysts to be a first-round pick next year and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M could also declare for the draft.

As Joe mentioned earlier today, the Jets — for reasons not very clear — are stonewalling the Bucs.

But the rumors get better. The creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, has typed that compensation and a salary have already been worked out as Dominik has gone through back channels to get this done, sidestepping the Jets and their general manager, John Idzik.

Food for thought: Vincent Jackson’s agent also represents Revis. Feel free to do the math.

Though some continue to insist that the deal still has too many moving parts, there’s a growing belief that the only remaining issue is whether the Jets will take what the Bucs are offering. As to the compensation for Revis, the suspicion is that the Bucs and the player’s agents have worked out the terms discreetly.

Sure, it’s tampering. But it happens more often than anyone admits, league office memos be damned. And if the Jets want to get this trade accomplished, it’s necessary.

Though Joe won’t exactly stand outside the gates of One Buc Palace with a lit torch if this goes through, Joe hopes Dominik passes.

Raise your hand if you know Revis, coming off ACL surgery, is healthy. Has anyone watched Revis cover anyone yet since his injury knocked him out of last season? This is not to mention the guy is always whining. How many times has he threatened to hold out or actually did hold out?

There is just no way Joe would trade a first round pick for Revis with his salary and injury. Dominik should tell Idzik if he doesn’t want a second round pick to go pound sand and try to find another team who will cough up a first round pick.

And there isn’t another team that foolish. It’s one helluva expensive gamble to trade a coveted first round pick for a guy who, unless he signs a contract, may bolt after one season and not one person, not even Revis himself, knows if he can play anywhere close to what he has in the past.

  1. Daniel Shreve Says:

Then again we will kick ourselfs in the ass if he comes back and torch’s it up

  2. Hunter Says:

    Joe,
No team will trade for Revis without an extension in place. So there’s no reason for anyone to even hint at anything else.

  3. Cannuckbuc Says:

Joe I could not agree with you more! I was excited, but now I am just tired of the Jets and Revis too. They want way too much I wish they would just sign some new Cbs and move on!

  4. Steve Says:

Joe is typically off his rocker but in this case I’ll have to agree. Be wary Bucs.

  5. vincebucnation Says:

Revis is a top 3 CB of ALL TIME and that’s not an exaggeration. Guys come back from ACL tears all the time. He still has many years left in the tank, and he’s worth every bit of a second round pick. We’ve had huge dollars tied up into guys like Wright and Black, I’ll tie up huge dollars into a superstar like Revis and you won’t find me complaining.

  6. You go Joe Says:

Does revis fit as buccaneer man? David has some strong leadership skills, Jackson, McCoy, Ronde, and now goldson. How can revis benefit the team besides his CB skill? One thing that keeps being mentioned with players with the buccs is they want 100%+ dedication. With the exception of Wright all other players doing their part and more.

  7. Kurius Boy Says:

    I say give them a 2nd & 4th or 5th, and that’s it

  8. Raphael Says:

agreed joe ! No way on a 1st……not any year… Other than that , go get him.. idzik gonna be left out in the cold if he doesn’t pull the trigger…

BTW Joe , what is up with Asomougha ? No draft picks needed there ..’

  9. Orlandobucfan Says:

Agreed I hope we pass and so do all other teams. We can pick him up next season when he’s a free agent just like we did today.

  10. GenocideD Says:

We need to get a starting Free agent CB, use our first rounder on a TE or DE/DT or trade back a bit and snag a RT later in the first, and grab a corner for the other side with our 2nd.

  11. BOb Says:

ok so its documented that dom has talked to revis’ agent but we’re wary of him bolting after one year? ummmm NO!

dom has written up a contract extension that revis will sign if he is traded to them. theres no way the trade happens unless! revis himself has obviously agreed to this beforehand. hence the tampering.
the jets owners just want someone else involved in the talks to up the price and thats why they wwant to take it to the league meetings sunday, so they can talk directly with other owners.

  12. Nick B Says:

players come back from ACL’s all the time. And he suffered it early enough in the season. If Revis is the player he use to be he shuts down half the field for your defense. And with him and Goldson in coverage that will help the pass rush immensely

  13. Dave Says:

I have no issue with the ACL really. He will eventually be perfectly fine from that in todays medical world.

My issue is you got what amounts to 2 very good safeties now and hopefully Ronde at nickel. All they need is Smith or Grimes and a rookie and the secondary becomes 5 times better than last year and doesn’t blow 3 games for them.

This can be done without giving up a number 1 and a number ___?

BUT….. if that is what they do and they sign Revis to a 4-6 year deal, I will be fine with it. Helll, how could I not? We wanted them to get better in the secondary so how could I complain about Revis and Goldson?

  14. Bucky23 Says:

don’t the jets need a running back? I would be fine with a 2nd round pick and LGB for Revis.

  15. knucknbuc Says:

You guys act like the no.13 overall pick is a more then likely star pro bowl player when that’s just not the case. The no.13 overall pick is gonna be all potential anyways. Dude could end up to be a bust or could end up to be a pro bowler or he could end up being an injury/suspension waiting to happen. How did our last cb drafted in the first round do again? O thats right we traded him for a 4th. This is the first major injury of revis’s career and that’s the only concern with him other then that the dude is a STUD. I have way more confidence in revis coming back off an injury and having a all pro season then I do some rookie coming in and becoming a pro bowler. If revis wouldn’t of gotten hurt last year no one would care about trading a 1st rounder for him. Im all on board with this move like the glazers. Revis Goldson, Barron, Insert other corner here. Is leaps and bounds better then last year. The best value in this draft is within the 2nd a 3rd rounds anyway. Whenever you have a chance to get a top 5 player of his generation injury or not you take that chance. Look at what the broncos did with payton last year. How’d that work out for them again??

  16. Andrew 1 Says:

THANK YOU JOE! YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. please please please do not get Revis. there is to much risk over reward involved. do the smart thing bucs and pass. there are plenty quality CBs out there with not nearly the amount of this drama.

  17. Cmurda Says:

I would love to believe that Rock star didn’t udge on the #13 pick. Im fine with next years 1 as I believe that will be a lower (higher number) pick that would be easier to swallow. Im hesitant to give this year’s #13.

  18. Scott Says:

How about a 2nd and Blount.

  19. Jacko101 Says:

Two more CB’s off the market Derek Cox and DRC, I guess I’m happy because I’m tired of hearing Get Cox get Cox.

  20. Andrew 1 Says:

I dont agree with this signing one bit, but if the bucs do get Revis they have my full support.

  21. BOb Says:

why do people keep mentioning a 1st round pick? al reports are saying the 2nd rounder is on the table so whats the deal? if they dont want the 2nd then they move on. im just hoping they dont miss out on the corner(s) they want but im sure dom isnt gonna stick to this for that long

  22. Nate Says:

Hey Joe in case you didnt know we signed a linebacker

    Jonathan Casillas 1 year contract

  23. Jacko101 Says:

@bob we are mentioning 1st rounder because that’s the alt deal, meaning this years 2nd or next years 1st

  24. Dylan Says:

This years 2nd next years 1st and Blount. Get it done and over with already, ACL is the new sprained ankle in the nfl almost every player can have a full recovery if they have the determination. If your gonna argue revis he will prove you wrong just watch next year. He is in the AP and Jamaal Charles breed. Why do you think team glazer gave Dom the green light even. You try playing drew brees, cam newton And Matt Ryan. Point being you need the arguably best defensive player in football to Hang with them teams. It will do more then just improve the secondary, it will put the bucs on the map, and also sell out the stadium. Just get it done, he is arguably worth two first before his ACL and then some. Players like this don’t get traded, take advantage.

  25. BOb Says:

no ive sen people mentioning the 13th pick

  26. TPCMatt Says:

I’m with “you go joe”, does Revis fit the Schiano mold? I can see him holding out, 2-3yrs down the road, just to avoid camp. As good as Revis can be, is he worth the price of two starters? Plus a 1st/2nd rnd pk? It’s hard to be dissapointed, if we landed footballs best CB. However, I’m just not feeling the move.

  27. Dave Says:

    “Jacko101 Says:
… I guess I’m happy because I’m tired of hearing Get Cox get Cox.”

You are hanging with the wrong dudes…..

  28. 76buc76 Says:

The deal is LGB,Freeman for Revis and a 2nd rounder also a first round swap. Then we package those pick’s to move up and select Geno Smith.

  29. cspann Says:

imo its worth it. with revis we know what we are getting. like some one said earlier we dont know if the draft pick is a bust are not. im fine with it. i believe they wouldnt be pushing for this if they werent thinking about the cap and the future. anyways from what i have read Dom has a deal in place already

  30. Jacko101 Says:

That would be the dumbest trade ever 7676. And cox is injury prone why down grade EJ biggers and Eric Wright minus his
Contract are on the same playing field lateral studio move

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

looks like bucsnation is split 50/50 on this.

  32. GetGrishd Says:

Wow! Did you people watch football last year? We started guys like Danny Gorer and Ahmad Black UF Alum hard to admit). Everyone is such a Joe fan and agrees with all he says. He’s a god but he can be WRONG! How often do you draft a corner in the 1st round and he is a pro bowler? Anyone? Anyone? Not very is correct. We drafted Al Harris is the 6th round in 1997 and he has had a wonderful pro bowl career! Too bad not in Tampa. Point being if you get a chance to acquire a first ballot hall of fame caliber player like Revis you’d be an idiot not to! We whiffed on Cutler & Favre let’s not choke on this one too! With that addition and say a Tyranne Matheu in the 4th and Escobar in the 3rd. We would compete for championships annual for the next 6 years!!!!!!

  33. DallasBuc Says:

It’s the Glazers money so if they want to go out and pay for the best cornerback in the game today don’t complain. I respect the commitment from the owners and think Dominik is getting better at his job. Who knows..maybe we even sign Bennett back after he finds the grass isn’t quite so much greener elsewhere. i would love this move for our team!!

  34. DOUGismyHERO Says:

As I said on the other board: The Bucs can sign whoever they/we want. But if they are unable to have another sucessful draft like in 2012 they are going nowhere.

This team has been badly handicapped by horrid drafts from before last year.

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I CANT BELIEVE SOMEONE JUST HAD THE NERVE TO SAY REVIS IS THE TOP 3 CORNER OF ALL TIME- WTF …LOL

AMAZES ME WHEN THESE YOUNG KIDS MAKE THE WILDEST STATEMENTS-

Ronnie Lott (Greatest All Around Defensive Back of All-Time)

    Rod Woodson-Seven-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro

    Mel Blount-five-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro

    Deion Sanders-Eight-time Pro Bowler, eight-time All-Pro

Dick “Night Train” Lane-Seven-time Pro Bowler, six-time All-Pro

    Lem Barney-Seven-time Pro Bowler, seven-time All-Pro

Willie Brown-Four-time Pro Bowler, five-time AFL All-
    Star, four-time All-Pro

    Lester Hayes

    Herb Adderley

    Etc

    Etc

  36. 4everBucsFan Says:

What makes anyone think that Revis wants to play here? This dude has such a huge ego and he already knows where he wants to play. If he comes in here with a chip on his ego inflated shoulder, he may never give us his best, and will force us to run him out of town. All will be lost. In fact, even now Izdic is jerking us around. This has punked all over it. Move on.

  37. Matt Says:

What corner in this years draft is better than REVIS? Nobody. If your gonna draft a corner in the 1st it might as well be REVIS. Who else is gonna stop JULIO JONES!!!!!

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    (Ronnie Lott)

-Remember his first 5yrs in the league he played Corner-

  39. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Doug Martin injured on field. Bucs turn to LGB…oh wait…he was traded???!

I don’t think so. I really do not see Revis as an upgrade to Wright. Eric has a suspension behind him…but it was his first so who is to say it will happen again?

    So far as skill, maybe he isn’t a #1…but a #2?

Sometimes we believe new faces equate to improvement…and while that may be true at times, there are other times that it isn’t.

Come the draft, I would like to see a stud DT in the first round and a good CB in the second.

  40. gorillapimp Says:

I wonder what Oprah has to say about all this mumbo jumbo has Regis sat on her sofa and told his story? I thought he retired and Strahan took his place. I think they should keep their picks and go after Grimes before it’s too late they Jets are playing jackleg preacher with the Buccaneers.

  41. 4everBucsFan Says:

    @ BuccaneerBonzai

I agree about Wright, maybe offer him a one year contract with the same PED clause.

  42. gorillapimp Says:

Grimes knows Freeman better than Freeman knows Freeman he’s intercepted quite a few passes from him. He can consult Freeman on what cornerbacks realize his tendancies are Grimes was responsible for a few wins against Tampa if you take back those interceptions Raheem Morris would still be coaching Tampa. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer if Tampa doesn’t sign him Carolina or The Saints will. it all starts up front the front seven no pass rush no coverage Miller Ben

  43. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

So players can’t come back from injury joe? Injurys are a part of the sport that every players deals with at some point and comes back even stronger and hungrier (in most cases). And you are saying a first round pick next year isn’t worth revis? Well that is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. What are the chances that Dee Milliner or Xavier Rhodes or any of the corners this year have anywhere close to the skills as darrelle revis? The chances are slim to none. And with my optimistic approach that our football team will do better than last year (so picked even later than 13) why not trade that pick for revis. The chance that you get a player that dominate are slim to none, so why not trade for a player that dominates one side of the field every game. To me this is a no brainer, except the 15 million $ a year but on today’s nfl that type of contract can be justified, because if you don’t have corners in today’s passing league you will get torn up aka our 2012 bucs team

  44. gorillapimp Says:

Gary Coleman ran for Govenor of California how did that help Tampa’s pass rush exactly it didn’t giving up a first round pick won’t either this years draft is heavy with true pass rushers and some who have serious upside like that morman Ansah he’s got natural ability to overpower and run around guys twice his size.

  45. Bucwitme24 Says:

Revis is a team captain, leader, and a top ten overall player in the nfl. Bucs need to do whatever it takes to reel him in. Give em our first rounder it’s not like we’re gonna get a better player with the 13th pick. He’s gonna fully recover this acl and bring this kinda intensity to our team…

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=203xDKPQvF0

He will be our best player and put us on the map again. It’s a no brainer

  46. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I swear, there are some idiots on JBF tonight. Did someone really try to say Revis isn’t an upgrade to Eric Wright? I am blown away by the amount of stupidity. I don’t really care if Revis is a top 3 CB of all time, but he sure as hell is the top CB in the NFL today (I need to see more of Sherman before he’s in that category). The guy has no weaknesses to his game. None, zero, nada, zilch. Not only is he the top CB, he’s one of the top defensive players in the game at any position. Some of you may disagree, but I can point to a ton of real experts that have actually stated that case for years now. I’m sorry, but their opinions mean more than yours. When you have the opportunity to get a top player in the league, you take it. Are any of you really willing to take the odds that we draft a player better than Revis at pick #13 (in a very weak early round draft class)? I think Dominik is doing a good job, but I don’t like those chances.

If you truly want to be a great team, then you have to roll the dice a little. You won’t get very far being conservative. On a team with very few elite players (if any), I would rather add an elite player than several good players. You need elite players to win a championship. I’m not saying Revis is the key to a championship, but he could be a very large piece of it. I know that I’m sick and damn tired of watching Colsten, Julio Jones, and Steve Smith torch us game after game. Against a healthy Revis, the only time they may touch the ball is in pregame warmups. He doesn’t need help, which makes everyone else better. But nah, let’s not take any chances. Let’s save money and be very conservative. That’s worked out so well for us the last 10 years.

  47. Hawaiian Buc Says:

And seriously, I’m really getting tired of people saying he holds out year after year. If you don’t like him or don’t want him, that’s fine, but don’t make stuff up. He held out one time, missed a tiny bit of training camp, then caved and took a team friendly deal to get back on the field. That’s it! He has said he wants a new long term deal, but he did not say he was going to hold out. Go back and read up. I’ve stated this 3 times now, and not one person has even acknowledged it, or tried to argue to the contrary. There’s a reason for that – because it’s true. If you guys want to b!tch and moan about us getting one of the best players in football, knock yourself out. If you want to pretend you could be a great GM, go for it. But when he has more catches than Julio Jones when we play the Falcons, don’t pretend like you were on board all along.

  48. gorillapimp Says:

@Hawaiin Buc you sound hella frustrated when is the last time you put that polynesion noodle is the love oven you should head down to the dollhouse and put your bid in on one of my girls I reccomend diamond she likes the asian dudes short tunnell large fee well worth the trip? You might blow a gasket venting your frustration on here with the other blowers

  49. Raphael Says:

Has anybody seen him run after his ACL injury ???? Don’t act like you know what his knee is like cause you don’t ….

  50. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Raphael,

That’s why they have doctors. Obviously they are going to make sure his knee is good first. It is fact, however, that an ACL is nowhere near the injury it used to be, and players recover from it with an extremely high success rate.

  51. gorillapimp Says:

he’ s only able to run ona treadmill as of late

  52. Raphael Says:

The only concern I have is giving up a 1st rd’er and paying the guy 15 mil per.
Then losing players cause our cap is all gone….

Seems a bit much for one player and might throw off the balance we have with a good young nucleus….

  53. Andrew 1 Says:

we have to many holes to fill so we cant sink all our money into one player. if we where one player away from the super bowl then yea, I say go for it. but we are not.

  54. Andrew 1 Says:

you know how many quality players we could sign from a contract as large as Revis would get. at least 2 or 3 starters.

  55. 4everBucsFan Says:

    @ Hawaiian Buc

Very passionate plea but what if Revis doesn’t want to be here? Then what? According to what we know, we don’t have his opinion about it? But his recently posted vacation pic on his agents website shows him wearing an Atlanta Falcons hat. And he quoted a couple of days ago he wouldn’t mind playing for a team like the 49ers or Falcons. Doesn’t he also have to agree with and show his approval for the trade?

  56. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    4everBucsFan,

Absolutely we have to make sure he wants to be here. If he doesn’t, then don’t make the deal. That’s for Dominik to find out, and I’m 100% sure he will, especially investing that kind of money. Players wear hats of random teams all the time, so I could care less about that. And yes, he would have to show approval, which he would by signing the extension.

  57. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ 4everbucsfan

he does not have to agree to the trade. remember when Richard Seymour was traded to the raiders? he didnt want to leave the patriots and even avoid the raiders for a little while but eventually he had to and he did report to the raiders.

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

its not like basketball where the player has to want to join the team he is going to be traded to.

  59. 4everBucsFan Says:

I think Atlanta is the other team we’re competing with to get Revis. Izdic will force the Bucs to give up their #13 first rounder if not Atlanta’s will trade their #30 first rounder.

  60. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Andrew1,

But that’s exactly the problem. I don’t want 2 or 3 average starters, I want some elite players. Elite players make everyone else around them better. Average players don’t do that. As an example, how do you think Dexter Jackson (the good DJ, not the bad one) won the MVP of the Super Bowl, yet did nothing once he left Tampa? It’s because the guys around him (namely Lynch) were great. Was Dwight Smith great? That’s what people just don’t understand – by Revis shutting down #1 receivers with no help, it makes everyone else’s job easier. Going out and getting 2 or 3 solid players won’t do that, because when it matters, they are going to get beat by an elite player (Julio Jones, Calvin Johnson, etc.).

  61. 4everBucsFan Says:

    @ Andrewb 1

great!! …now we just traded away future picks and a ton of money for a prima dona player that is not happy to be here. I’m sure we’ll get 100% out of him.

  62. Andrew 1 Says:

even if that is the case we are not going to get bullied into giving up that 1st round pick.

  63. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ 4everbucsfan

the point I was trying to make was to point out the fact that he does not have to agree to it and that it would still be possible. not whether or not he will be happy.

  64. Andrew 1 Says:

but that is a good point, even though Richard Seymour eventfully got over it and played great.

  65. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Look, if he’s intelligent (which by most accounts he is), he’s going to be happy playing for any team that gives him long term stability. This is a business, and in the NFL, your contract is a one way street, so you have to get what you can get. Most fans simply don’t understand this.

Revis is an extremely hard worker, and his coaches love him. Maybe not the GM, but the coaches love the guy. We are the perfect scheme for his talent, and we have coaches on the team that have coached him. Obviously they have signed off on him. When he’s on the field, he’s as far from a prima dona as they come.

  66. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Hawaiian

your right. we cant forget about his bum knee, and we can forget about him being a pirma donna. the thing we can not overlook is the money. hes just commanding to much money. we have to many holes to just drop it all on one player, even if he is great. 1 player does not make a team. plus we have to sign our own guys within the next couple of years. wouldnt you agree?

  67. Andrew 1 Says:

we have to distribute the money evenly between every position as best as possible. the QB position being the only exception. that method would produce a quality roster.

  68. 4everBucsFan Says:

If he comes in here with the same mind set that Vincent Jackson had last year, and he’s completely healthy, we will be competing in the play-offs this season. I would also consider offering Wright a one year contract matching Ronde Barbers.

  69. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Andrew1,

First of all, what he asks for and what he receives are two different things. All we have to do is give him the same or more than his market value. There are so many ways around the cap (front loading, back loading, restructuring, etc.), that I’m really not too worried he’s going to handicap us in the coming years. This is why Dominik gets paid the big bucks, and I have confidence that he can do it. Not to mention the fact that the cap grows every year, and there is a huge spike expected in 2015.

I don’t really think we have that many holes. Aside from our secondary and maybe another LB and TE, we really just need depth (and I really hope not a new QB. Make no mistake, if Freeman doesn’t choke like a dog late in the year, we make the playoffs). Fortunately, good depth can be had for cheap if you can scout and coach well. But like I said, putting an elite player on the field raises the level of the other players on the team, and that’s really what we need. We all saw the impact Schiano had – making players that did little under Raheem into much improved players. By adding an elite player on the field, it will raise their level even more.

  70. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @4everbucsfan,

I think a lot of people have the wrong impression of Revis. Go back and read up about his work ethic. Go research what his coaches (present and former) say about him. Find me a teammate or opponent (aside from Richard Sherman) who has anything negative to say about him on or off the field. Go watch an interview of him. He’s very well-spoken, and comes across as a very nice guy. And just as a reminder, Vincent Jackson had a similar reputation to Revis. He held out one year too. The fans of the Chargers thought he was all about the money. Your impression of a guy is not always reality, and I feel extremely confident this will be the case with Revis.

    @ Hawaiian

wow, never really considered all of that. jesus, i think you got me actually warming up to the idea of getting Revis. your have been very convincing.

  72. Andrew 1 Says:

so long as we dont get into cap hell over it.

  73. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Andrew 1,

But if he sucks, don’t blame it on me, lol. I’ll be the first to say it’s risky. If it wasn’t, it would take all of our draft picks to get him. If it doesn’t work out, it could definitely hurt us for years to come. I’m just so sick of being mediocre (at best) every year, and coming in second place when it comes to making a splash. I’d rather take a chance with the opportunity to be a great defense again than just be decent and come in second or third in our division every year.

  74. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Also, as crazy as this sounds, I kind of miss us having to worry about the cap. We’ve been spending the least amount of money every single year, so it’s a welcomed change.

  75. Vic66 Says:

@foreverbucfan: if Atlanta had offered their #1 pick all this would be over. Dominik will do what Bryne Glazer tells him to later this morning (about 8:30am) and there will be a 11:00 am press conference and then it will be over. “do I hear Kate Smith about to sing?”

  76. milos81 Says:

    Hawaiin –

Amen to your perspective on this. I have tried to sport the anti-Revis perspective for a few weeks, and it is the sensible and, as you said, conservative play.

Still, I can’t go with it. This opportunity is too big. Great reward requires great risk – and I’ll stand by that even if we get Revis and he blows his knee out once and for all in the preseason. It is a risk worth taking. We need elite talent on our team, and in particular on our defense. On offense we have Jackson, Nicks, and Martin. On defense we have, maybe, McCoy and David, and now Goldson (and as a result probably Barron too). And as good as they are and will be, they will never be as good at their positions as Revis is at his. So there is elite and there is ELITE. Goldson is elite. Revis is ELITE. In the NFL today, he defines what it is to be a great cornerback.

We always talk about “the Jackson effect” on offense, relating to how Jackson’s work ethic, his presence on the field, the attention he commands, changes the complexion of our offense entirely. One player, who is ELITE, can have that effect, and we saw it first-hand with VJax. The injury-related risk wasn’t there with him, but every huge acquisition carries a bust risk, as we’ve unfortunately learned over the years (Alvin Harper, etc.). I have very little doubt Revis will have a similar effect on our defense, even if we wind up starting Biggers, L.Johnson, and Wright beside him (which we won’t).

That is, if we get him. And I hope we do.

  77. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    ^ Damn that’s a good post

  78. Chris Says:

    Joe –

Damn a lot of comments here already! I agree completely with your thought on this.

I think Dominick and co. believe that Freeman is not a Superbowl winning QB so they might try to just go FAR out of the way to put the best team possible for the next 2-3 years.

I still think, we, too are in the market for a new/rookie QB this/next year.

  79. mcBuc Says:

Hawaiian. You are 100% correct. I have not commented lately, but i have been reading. You have been right since the get go on revis. I say lets get him locked ul asap.

  80. Architek Says:

This team becomes a factor if they get Revis, bottom line.

  81. Rrsrq Says:

Tell them we will take Tebow off their hands to make the pot sweeter for them, that way we get a back up qb that Josh is looking over his shoulder, so he plays better (risky), the get a 2nd round pick and less of a media circus

  82. chrisfrom orlando Says:

Look guys, we have now some pieces together and we need still help at CB,DE,DT and TE. Revis was the best defense player in the league. I think Dom wants to draft a DE or DT in the first round this year to fill one hole.
But we need Revis. When I sit in my seat at RJS in September and EJ Biggers plays vs Julio Jones and gets burned time and time again, i will say to myself….man what if revis would be here.
Without Revis we are in trouble!

  83. Tbuc Says:

Dom loves drafting injury prone players so what’s Joes problem with Dom getting Revis?

  84. teacherman777 Says:

    Get him!

    Get him!

    Our defense will be dominant!

    Dont worry about his ACL.

Dont worry about the draft picks.

    Just get him!

    Its Darrelle Revis!

And we play againt the Saints and Falcons 4 times a year!

    We need a great CB!

  85. Cannuckbuc Says:

Wow after reading the blogs I am starting to believe there could be cap room after Revis. My biggest worry has been the Bucs would be so cash strapped we couldn’t sign anybody else of quality.

  86. Vic66 Says:

I sure got fooled. Thought we would have Revis by this hour. It’s time(IMO) now to get another CB.

  87. Bobby Says:

Let’s see…should we get a cb who may be the best that’s ever lived at his position and gamble that he can come off of the same injury Adrian Peterson came off of. Gee I don’t know…Peterson sucked last year didn’t he?……

  88. You Go Joe Says:

It just hit me, if the Buccs fan are splitted into two for this decision imagine the front office and Mark Dominik

  89. Patrick Says:

Well if we tanked next year, we wouldn’t be able to select Johnny Manziel!!

  90. C. Alaka Says:

Joe you have truly opened my eyes! Not only are you a diehard Bucs fan but you’re a Jack Bauer fan too!!! So quick question, which season are you watching rite now? You mentioned Nina so it has to be the earlier seasons. My girlfriend never watched it so I got her to finally start it from the beginning & now she’s hooked LOL. We watching season 2 right now & almost done w/ it.
