Ryan Mallett And The Bucs
March 12th, 2013So do the Bucs want competition for Josh Freeman or not?
Depending on the time of the year and which member of the Bucs organization Joe talks to, either Josh Freeman is firmly dug in as the Bucs starter, or the Bucs want someone to push him (or both?).
It seems this afternoon, the “Freeeman-needs-pushing” element of the Bucs organization must have cold-called the Patriots asking about the availability of backup quarterback and former second round pick Ryan Mallett, so reports Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald.
The Browns and Buccaneers have expressed interest to the Patriots in trading for quarterback Ryan Mallett, but a deal seems unlikely at this point, according to a source.
The CBA doesn’t allow players to restructure their contracts until after their third season if they were drafted in 2011 or later, and that has tempered teams’ interest in acquiring Mallett. Of course, Mallett would be under a team’s control through 2014 for affordable money, but a new team would prefer to have some long-term security if they’re going to invest in a potential starting quarterback.
It’s unknown what type of compensation has been discussed. Mallett was drafted in the third round in 2011, so it would make sense for the Patriots to covet a similar pick, if not something with more value.
Though getting a capable backup like tis certainly a smart move, Joe has given up trying to read the tea leaves on whether the Bucs are nervous about Freeman or believe he is their stud for the next 10 years.
The answer to that question will be answered by the end of the 2013 season.

You’ve never seen Mallett play, the only moron is you.

Hey Joe, please don’t tweet that “somewhere, Dan Orlovsky has his head buried in a pillow”. Ahmad Black didn’t appreciate it very much, lol.

Make this happen!! Mallet is a stud QB!!
March 12th, 2013 at 6:46 pm
First off, it’s “Mallett” secondly, he’s a 3rd round pick, and finally he has shown absolutely nothing to prove he can even play in the NFL.
March 12th, 2013 at 6:46 pm
“Make this happen!! Mallet is a stud QB!!”
So was Matt Cassel when he was just a Pats back-up.

Brady was just a back-up too! and Brady was a 6th rd. pick Montana also, doesnt matter where they were drafted, it matters how they play. BTW is there anyone more annoying than the guy who corrects spelling?

March 12th, 2013 at 7:45 pm
anyone please Freeman touch my last nerv
March 12th, 2013 at 7:52 pm
We need to make this happen. I say we go as high as a 2. If not move up and get Geno in the draft. Either Freeman steps up or we move on. If he does step up then we have trade bait. Better QB play and this team goes far. And of course better secondary play (get asomugha, Goldson).

there will be plenty of opportunities to replace Freeman next year if he is a total flop during the course of this upcoming season. no need to jump the gun on getting a QB right now with so much uncertainty on how he will play or finding the best possible replacement for him. this situation requires patients. heck we can even make a trade for Mallett next year if it comes to that. just keep all available options open.

Now I find this very interesting – maybe “we’ll trade you Taliban “now”, you trade us Mallet, later…helps with that whole “competition” issue…
Landing Revis/Grimes, Goldson, and either Cliff Avrill/Bennett – could turn our draft into what it should be anyway – one where you daft depth/back-up’s for development…you know, the Patriot way…
If only half of this speculation turns out to be true – Schiano will be in a MUCH better situation than he was this time last year…
…and so will the fan base!
Buy the way, I think this means Ronde Barber isn’t going to be coming back.

Grimes signs 1 year deal with ATL. Per Schefter.
March 12th, 2013 at 8:23 pm
Did anyone catch that sound bite with Warren Sapp on Total access…When they where talking about –
-Draft Selections made by Belichick (Coached teams)
*Since 1993, average Per Draft
Patriots-2006-2012-(9.4)
Patriots-2000-2005 (8.5)
Browns-1993-1995 (6.0)
Sapp, was telling the truth (with or without the profanity)
The collective group in the organization-has seriously failed in their overall evaluation of talent. Its a lot of wasted picks-But as long as you draft Brady who cares huh….

Thought this was coming with the Aqib Talib trade to NE…. Ryan Mallett would be a great Buccaneer Man…. I remember thinking this late last season.
March 12th, 2013 at 8:37 pm
So is this it for free agency today? Kind of a let down….
March 12th, 2013 at 8:42 pm
Orlandobucfan it wasnt a prank by someone pretending to be with Buffalo, some 20 year olds recorded a conversation between Dom and Buddy Nix. It was says to be a prank by them. But thats a no no to record calls without the people knowin.

“Grimes signs 1 year deal with ATL. Per Schefter.”
——-
Not so fast my friend. That report has been corrected.
March 12th, 2013 at 9:00 pm
What was Mallet’s concerns coming out in the draft? Character. Not a Buccaneer Man.
March 12th, 2013 at 9:15 pm
Last years free agency much more exciting than this years. Not that the bucs won’t step up and sign players but it seemed like last year was first day signing right away.
March 12th, 2013 at 9:19 pm
Pass on Revis. Go get Grimes. Sign Gholston. Pick up an end like Osi or resign Bennett. Draft well. End result: PLAYOFFS.
March 12th, 2013 at 9:42 pm
“Gee a qb with a Bain” ,,,, seriously? Your name states “frees a boob”and you bless us with such comments?
March 12th, 2013 at 10:58 pm
Too bad about Revis…he was the best option…but the second options are good enough when coupled with any other secondary free agents (Goldson, Winfield, Grimes, Avril)…we won’t miss him…powerful position Dominik’s put the Bucs in.
This is a weak draft, meaning we’re going for depth…which means we have to get starters from Free Agency (not saying Dom will spend crazy cash, but it just so happens he has a LOT of cash)…
There isn’t a better prospect than Ryan Mallett for QB “competition” …but I agree he needs to undergo the psychological assessment before becoming a Buccaneer man. Did Bellichick put him out there for trade because Mallet isn’t responding to the attitude “adjuster”…or he’s testing his value, or he’s already decided that Ryan Mallet simply is worth more in a trade. Tom Brady’s clock is winding down…two years of development is NOT the time to trade a valuable future starter…so one should probably be careful…
March 13th, 2013 at 12:00 am
Omg I so want this to happen.. If we get Ryan Mallet im buying season tickets!
March 13th, 2013 at 12:59 pm
OH, If only this were already a done deal… The Bucs games would be worth watching this season…
If the Bucs could bring in a guy like Ryan Mallet to be the starting QB and ignite HOPE in the fans again that the Bucs could be a winning team, it would go a long way in reconciling the organization and the fan base as well as help redeem them from the failed “Freeman project”!
