Are Bucs Shopping LeGarrette Blount?
March 9th, 2013Joe was as shocked as the next hungover Bucs fan this morning when he learned Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik inked little-used and recently ineffective running back LeGarrette Blount to a new pact.
But this is a potential smokescreen writes good guy CBSSports.com’s NFL insider Jason LaCanfora, who has been told Dominik is shopping Blount to other clubs.
Blount could fetch a mid-round pick in return — some have suggested a fifth-round pick — and with him not being a part of the offense much last year under new coach Greg Schiano, and with rookie runner Doug Martin coming off an exceptional season, it makes sense that Tampa Bay would try to get a pick in return for Blount.
Thus a trade would be a win-win, and with Detroit among the teams in need of a back, and Blount younger than most of the options in free agency, general manager Mark Dominik should be able to get something in return for the player.
This makes perfect sense. Joe has always been of the mind good running backs are a dime a dozen and can be found in the middle to late rounds. Hell, Blount was a free agent left available by the Titans.
And we all know what Dominik likes to do with extra middle-round draft picks, right? Joe’s mouth is already watering for the draft.

Of course they’re shopping him. I think that’s obvious.
March 9th, 2013 at 2:46 pm
I hope we get something for him 🙂
March 9th, 2013 at 2:55 pm
I don’t know…I still think we need insurance for Martin, unless we’re planning on drafting someone else. No confidence in anyone else on our roster.
March 9th, 2013 at 2:56 pm
Well when Doug Martin gets an ankle sprain and our running game drowns look me up and tell me how that 5th round pick is lighting up the NFL.
March 9th, 2013 at 2:58 pm
2nd + LB for Revis lol 😉
March 9th, 2013 at 3:01 pm
We will keep Blount this season. I am glad we’ve signed him would have liked a longer contract but 1 year is better than zip. I hope we use him more this season, love to see him & martin in same backfield.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:01 pm
I hope Blount goes to another team and rushed for 2,000 yards. The dude has talent. Only think I don’t understand with Schiano. Martin might 3-4 good years the way were using him.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:02 pm
All this would is create ANOTHER need for us. We don’t have any other backs on the roster that suitable as backups.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:16 pm
I think the Bucs are shopping every player on this team.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:17 pm
Maybe they trust Michael Smith better now.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:24 pm
My guess would be that they want a backup that has the same strengths as Martin so the offense doesn’t need to change if Martin leaves the game. Last year should have proved to everyone that Schiano wants a workhorse RB offense, especially since he let a rookie carry the entire load.
I love Blount’s style, but he doesn’t fit anymore.
The only way Martin leaves the game is if he’s close to death I guess.

…..Traded to the Green Bay Peckers for their 5th Rd Pick (#152 overall). The Bucs select….Stepan Taylor, RB Stanford.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:28 pm
They didn’t spend over $100 million in future contracts last year to have a fire sale this year, Mr. 1976Buc. You are on a roll today.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:36 pm
LOL! Just want a chance to play in the big games and willing to do whatever it takes to get there.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:36 pm
Stepfan Taylor will go in Rd 2 or 3. So lets trade Blount for another Keith Tandy. Now that is maximizing talent.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:38 pm
I believe Blount is part of the offer to NYJ for Revis. And makes the Jets sweat by shopping him league wide as they want a Power back and have zilch.
March 9th, 2013 at 3:48 pm
@jvato
4th and 5th round picks are good for moving around in the draft, that’s why Dominik always wants so many of them, in case a player starts falling in round 2 or 3 that shouldn’t be. I agree, a player selected in round 5 isn’t worth a ton , but a 1st round talent that falls to the middle/end of round 2 is.
March 9th, 2013 at 4:01 pm
@gotbbucs @jvato
Terrell Davis 6th round pick turned out ok if I am not mistaken. He won 2 super bowls for John Elway. I was living in Denver at the time and it was TD not elway.
I believe each round can provide a Gem or Superstar. The HOF is full of late round picks. I’d love to see the percentages.
Jerry Rice was a late round pick! GOAT!
Be positive ladies and gents. At least the GM is working! Those of us who remember the Culverhouse area should be damn appreciative.
March 9th, 2013 at 4:12 pm
@tmax
Well, now that you bring that to my attention, we might as well trade all of our 1st and 2nd round picks for late rounders.
Obviously we all know that there have been a few HOFer’s in the late rounds.
March 9th, 2013 at 4:13 pm
@jvato24. ……Not if he doesn’t improve a lot on his 4.76 Forty time @ Pro Day….Pat Kirwan said “he could fall to the 6th Rd. with those poor numbers”
either way… i agree with @gotbbucs
March 9th, 2013 at 4:48 pm
1976Buc-
They’re shopping every player? WTF are you thinking about? What would even motivate such an asinine statement?
March 9th, 2013 at 5:10 pm
@tmaxcon
FYI Jerry Rice was NOT a “late round pick”, he was a first-round pick.
March 9th, 2013 at 5:13 pm
Patriots, Bucs, and Cardinals appear to be the “leading candidates” to land Sean Smith in free agency
Hmmm. wonder who’ll have to overpay? The Bucs or Cards?
March 9th, 2013 at 6:11 pm
Cur name one player that is off the table for the right trade then tell me why we haven’t slapped a franchise tag on him?
March 9th, 2013 at 9:11 pm
The club will be lucky to get a 7th for Blount; he does, however, have a very attractive contract.
March 9th, 2013 at 10:05 pm
If teams don’t want to give us a 5th then we’ll just keep him. No worries. Good insurance should something happen to Martin. We have the upper hand.
