More Dunta Robinson Chatter
March 5th, 2013Joe is starting to run out of analogies to explain the Bucs’ needs for cornerbacks. Really, being just a handful of yards from owning the worst pass defense in NFL history really says it all.
So cornerbacks was a major topic of conversation when Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune dropped a phone call to chat with “The Fabulous Sports Babe,” heard on WHFS-FM 98.7 last night.
Cummings seems convinced Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is going to take a hard look at former Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson.
“Like everybody, you really got to think that cornerback is really on the top of their list. The real key is if there is anyone in free agency that they want,” Cummings said. “I think the Falcons, in freeing up a lot of their money Friday [cutting three players including Robinson], I think means [the Falcons] are going to throw money at Brent Grimes to try to bring him back.
“Dunta Robinson is a guy I am certain the Bucs will at least look into. I feel pretty strongly that is a guy they could sign if they like what they can see.
“I think anyone you pick up in free agency you are probably going to have to give them a three- or four-year contract. I think they would look at it as a guy who can fill in for the next two or three years and kind of stem the tide a little bit and improve that spot and that allows them to develop a cornerback they may pick up in the middle to late rounds in the draft. That is one objective. That makes some sense.
“Pretty sure if they get one starting cornerback in free agency, they will try to get another starting cornerback in the draft.”
This is sort of what Joe wrote yesterday. It would not be a shock if the Bucs sign two corners and draft one, or just sign one corner as a starter, draft two with one of the two slotted to start right away, and then the second corner would develop into an eventual starter.
If the Bucs are to seriously consider themselves a playoff contender, they simply must overhaul their gaggle of cornerbacks.

Emphasis on “gag”
March 5th, 2013 at 2:04 pm
Lets steal Grimes & Robinson from ATL and call it a day….
March 5th, 2013 at 2:06 pm
I think we make a large offer to grimes and smith
March 5th, 2013 at 2:10 pm
If Chris Gamble gets cut by the Panthers I’d like for the Bucs to look into signing him.
March 5th, 2013 at 2:32 pm
DRC> all other CB
March 5th, 2013 at 2:40 pm
Grimes and Goldson would make my day!!! Adding those 2 in the secondary would be huge!!!
Realistically I think Sean Smith and maybe Derek Cox and draft 1 in the early rounds.
March 5th, 2013 at 2:41 pm
DRC is not > all other CB
Furthermore Joe, seriously why is no one mentioning Antoine Cason?
March 5th, 2013 at 2:57 pm
It’s funny when dang near every CB free agent is an upgrade.
That just goes to show you how bad our DBs really were.
March 5th, 2013 at 3:04 pm
I laughed when the Falcons overspent for Robinson two years ago. Now that he as failed to live up to his lowly expectations I had for him, why would we want to sign him? Robinson is washed up, was never that good to begin with, and is clearly in the declining phase of his career.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:01 pm
I say sean smith n goldson n draft a cb 1st or second round. Maybe snag a cheaper cb too cuz yeah anybodys an upgrade.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:34 pm
This is off subject but I just read where there is speculation that the Bucs are considering placing a 1st Round tender on Blount…..Ha! Don’t inhale that one for sure. It’s rediculous.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:38 pm
I got Dom signing 2 CB’s and a FS. Either Smith & Cox or Grimes & Cox, along w/ Goldson or Kenny Phillips; then in draft (1st rd) the best DL or LB available.
March 5th, 2013 at 4:40 pm
I say sign Smith & Goldston. Draft Rhodes & Amerson. Sign Woodson/Landry and Moss/Jacobst to a one year deal. Get rid of the whole secondary. Keep Barron and let the other young players develop!
March 5th, 2013 at 4:53 pm
@1976Buc
I agree, theres no way or reason for them to do that. They clearly dont believe in Blount and know he’s gone after next year… I think they would want to put a lower tender on him to see if anyone will bite so they could at least get something for him. That makes much more sense than keeping a guy around just to sit him on the bench.

Buc Fan #238 ,lol–literally!!
March 5th, 2013 at 5:14 pm
fyi goldson not a cover saftey he plays same as barron a run stopper… we need a cover saftey like william moore or quinn… sign quinn, grimes, avirl, cox and reggie bush draft eiffert and trufant and we will be set….call me mark if you need help
March 5th, 2013 at 6:02 pm
I’m OK if they sign him as long as we’re not required to pronounce his name as don-tay… You spell it wrong you’re stuck with it… Sorry dun-tah .
March 5th, 2013 at 6:03 pm
Lets not get Robinson.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:14 pm
Moore is a SS, Goldson is a FS. Arvil is about to hit 30 and is overrated.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:22 pm

March 5th, 2013 at 6:23 pm
“I got Dom”, meaning I have Mark Dominik making these particular moves
March 5th, 2013 at 6:24 pm
As in, the top 20 guys I think the Bucs should target.
March 5th, 2013 at 6:58 pm
Buc Fan #238
I would replace Arvil w/ Michael Bennett at that #1 spot.
March 5th, 2013 at 7:02 pm
DO NOT SIGN ROBINSON.I’d rather sign Bigger’s
March 5th, 2013 at 7:44 pm
I think we really need to look hard at the Honey Badger in the later rounds to start as our slot corner. He is a playmaker that our defense desperately needs. Also if Goldson hits the market we need to go guns blazing at him, throw him a lot of money. Him and Barron next to each other would be dangerous for years.
March 5th, 2013 at 8:28 pm
FA can’t get here fast enough… A lot of people going to be surprised when they find out that a bunch of the big name FA’s they want won’t sign with us unless we are willing to throw fist full of dollars at them.
March 5th, 2013 at 9:10 pm
You know it does seem like players dont want to play in Tampa. I thought it was sunny most of the year? Isnt that Florida palm trees and 70 degrees? Beach front property coastal living.
Heres why: WE ARE NOT A SUPERBOWL CONTENDER. WE DONT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.
ITS SO MUCH TALENT IN FA…DOM COULD SIGN A BETTER TEAM THEN WE HAVE FROM JUST THIS YEAR ALONE.
The draft is so heavy we could rebuild the whole roster, create competition and depth at every position.
I cant wait to see this comedy..
It just hit me…boom!
Fans you think Goldston will choose Tampa( I hope he does) over Dallas or Washington? NO..THEY NEED A SAFETY TOO!
Daniel Snider/Jerry Jones we can forget about it. We can only hope to over pay underrated players. Authur Blank is aggressive also, plus the dixie’s are getting to the Playoffs.
Now Im back to reality. I cant wait to see this comedy unfold.
I can appreciate Vjax & Nicks a little more for coming to the Buc$!
March 6th, 2013 at 12:11 am
Sean Smith is #1 that I feel we should sign. Then if the price is right I think DRC would be a great addition as well. We could then use our 2nd round pick on another CB like Amerson or possibly Banks if he is still there. Dream scenario would be Trufant falling to the 2nd round. Even if we had to trade up 5 to 8 spots to get him, it would be worth it.
March 6th, 2013 at 12:19 am
Also, this TE talk could easily be resolved by signing Delanie Walker! He is the best TE available in FA. His athleticism would fit great with VJ and MW. Then hopefully we could get a slot WR finally that would open up the field more.
IF we could get Sean Smith and another top CB in FA our 1st pick would be open to so many different possibilities. We could go best player available, pick our biggest need, or my favorite…draft Tavon Austin. IF Freeman couldn’t get it done with VJ83, Mike Williams, Delanie Walker, Tavon Austin, and Doug Martin with a healthy OL. He would def be done. But hopefully he could get it together and take our team over the top!! I love this time of year…all the different possibilities that can happen in FA and the Draft.
March 6th, 2013 at 12:38 am
Reminds me of an older Biggers, no. Sean Smith, Derek
Cox or DRC. No one else really interests me.
March 6th, 2013 at 1:43 am
Drc dosent tackle Sean smith gets beat constantly and cox stays hurt y do bucs fanz want these guys I would say gamble if he gets cut trade that first and stock up on draft picks its a very good defensive draft stdy the tape and let’s hit on the draft I think Thomas out of Syracuse in the 3rd or 4rd will be a steal this kid hits everything that moves would be perfect at the free he ran a 4.38
March 6th, 2013 at 1:44 am
I like Tracy porter this kid can be a stud corner
March 6th, 2013 at 9:56 am
Everyone assumes that ANY free agent cornerback is an upgrade…
Here guys, let me educate you….for those of you that don’t actually watch football or follow competent analysts…
Dunta Robinson SUCKS!
Sean Smith SUCKS!
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie SUCKS!
Seriously I would rather have Leonard Johnson and E.J. Biggers than these overpaid clowns. We would be better off drafting corners with our first two picks than we would be to waste money on any of these guys.
March 6th, 2013 at 11:18 am
LoL…Sean Smith is better than any CB we currently have on our roster. And he will only get around 6-7 million a season. That is not overpaid. You also cannot rely on 2 rookie CBs to start for your team. That would be a terrible idea.
@bucs55
I also like Tracy Porter, and another CB that hasn’t really been mentioned is Antoine Cason. I’m not saying he is great or anything. But, as a #2 or even Nickel CB would be an improvement. He also won’t command a huge contract.
