Derek Cox And The Bucs

Joe often wakes from a nap or a deep sleep in a cold sweat after a nightmare in which the Bucs’ version of Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson, the Adderall Twins, are still starting at cornerback in 2013.
That’s very unlikely to happen, thankfully, but that means the Bucs are beyond desperate for cornerbacks. The Bucs corners were dismal last year; Joe wouldn’t be bothered one iota if Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik pulled a Bill Walsh and drafted four cornerbacks next month in the draft.
Joe’s going to guess Dominik drafts two corners and signs as least one corner in free agency. Joe’s good friend and draft guru, “The Commish,” Justin Pawlowski, has been putting in the research, calling his contacts and doing the math, and he believes Jaguars cornerback and free agent Derek Cox will be wearing pewter and red this season.
With all of those players mentioned in a very deep free agent corner class this year, I believe, from the rumblings I’ve heard, the Bucs’ top corner target in free agency this year could be Derek Cox of the Jaguars.
Cox, 26, is one of the best cornerbacks that not many people know about. Cox has a nice blend of size (6’1” 195 lbs) and speed (4.39) and is very good in press and man coverage.
The Bucs new defensive backs coach, Tony Oden, spent 2012 with the Jaguars and knows the type of player Cox can be.
Pawlowski, however, points out that Cox was often hurt, a fact Joe dove into a couple of weeks ago. The Bucs need a guy who they can count on.
Given the Bucs’ need for corners, and Oden’s experience with Cox, Joe believes Pawlowski is on to something here. And even if he cannot play a full season, Cox likely be an upgrade over Eric Wright and, to be honest, a lamppost is an upgrade from Aqib Talib.

Need to come out, guns blazing, go after Cox (I’m thinking $4 – $5 mil/yr) and Sean Smith ($8 mil / yr). Then spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on CB (I think Rhodes or Truefant will do nicely), and then a 5th or later on another CB.
Have the 5th+ rounder, Biggers, Gaitor and Johnson battle out for 4th and 5th spots. If possible, if thye doen’t make the team, put Johnson, Gaitor and/or 5th+ rounder on Practice Squad (if Biggers can’t make it as 4th CB, then he should be let go).

I say cox and smith would be a nice pick ups. They would be 2 big-physical athletes who command respect in one on one situations and would give our d-line sometime to get pressure. Make wright a slot corner where he belongs until we can afford to get rid of him. Keep Johnson for depth and draft a couple of corners(let them compete), a tight end, a right tackle, a free safety such as rambo to mold for when ronde leaves, and an outside linebacker.

Just pick up Ndamni Asomuga or how ever u spell his name? Pay Dashon Golston if he’s not franchised. Trade Down in the draft to get Rhodes. Use a late round and get that kid Slay. A big long corner I seen watching the combine. Trufant would be nice!

@t in Orlando the first part Cox and Smith I was with but why on earth would we draft a CB in the first with SO SO many other needs?? FS,Linebacker, DL, TE or OL. If we did that pfft that’s all I would say.

Derek Cox is an above average CB, that is, when he’s on the field. I guess I just don’t understand. As physical as Schiano expects his CBs to play, why would a brittle, oft-injured CB be at the top of their list?
Another website says that the Bucs are targeting 2 CBs in FA, Sean Smith and Keenan Lewis. I don’t have a preference out there, but my first choice would not be a CB who is better known for not being in the game than he is for playing in the game!

I like Smith, have doubts about Cox due to injuries, but no one seems to be mentioning Antoine Cason. He would be a nice counter to Smith and a draft pick. Let’s not forget we can expect Barron to be much improved this year at safety.

Sign cox and toller and draft a cb in the 2nd rd. Resign ronde and use a 4th rd pick for his replacement And that may solve our secondary woes!!!!

Cox is alright for depth, but we need to acquire a legitimate pro bowler. We need to get rid of Wright, he sucks and is payed way too much.

Off topic: if the dixie chicks get Steven Jackson then we need to draft a DT 1 round. Plus a beastly middle LB. If the Panties get Mike Wallace we better get some fast corners.

I wouldnt mind seeing this Cox kid on our team. When he is on the field he is way better than any other corner on our roster right now. I think we are going to let Wright compete he could win the #2 corner position. We need to bring in one or two free agent corners that know how to play right now, and then draft another 2 or 3. We need a complete overhaul of the CB position. Also if Dashon Goldston doesnt get franchised we need to throw a bunch of money at him. He is in his prime and I could imagine how hard we would be hitting people with him and Barron running around next to each other.

We can offer money all day long to every single free agent cornerback out there, but it all comes down to, Do they want to come here? Cox would be a nice addition, but I have a feeling to lure him here we will have to pay him elite money, just to have him laying on the training table every time you turn around. I feel if you’re going to have to spend so much money in the first place then go after the best CBs in free agency. Cox is not the best, and I will only be satisfied with him as long as we don’t over-pay, like we did Eric Wright.

There’s no reason at all to believe FA’s won’t come here.
Fact is we are an attractive, young, up and coming team in a preferred state for many players.
A dismal 2011 season didn’t keep the two biggest names in FA from coming here either

I see it the opposite. I think we will sign 2 corners and draft 1. If we think we are gonna upgrade our secondary by playing rookies everywhere… they are going to be sadly disappointed.
