Martellus Bennett “Grinding” In Slowtown Tampa

February 28th, 2013

Martellus Bennett doesn’t seem to be a big fan of the Tampa lifestyle

Legions of Bucs fans would love to see beastly, soon-to-be-free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett wearing pewter and red next month and playing alongside his brother Michael.

Joe wouldn’t mind that either. The younger Bennett is a beastly blocker and emerged as a versatile pass-catcher last season with 55 receptions in the Giants offense, which just happens to be very much like the Bucs’. And Martellus is a very candid Twitterer. The dude puts it out there.

Martellus Bennett was in Tampa yesterday working out hard, “grinding for the love of the game” per his Twitter account, with Gerald McCoy, Michael Bennett and Roy Miller. But it seems Martellus may not like how we country folk go about things.

@JoeGryffindor – (aka Martellus Bennett) -Tampa is one of the slowest places in the world. Lol. Visiting here from NY is like running fast on a treadmill then gettin off to walk.

Yes, Martellus, Tampa runs at a pretty slow pace compared to the Big Apple. But the leader of the New Schiano Order runs his OTAs and training camp practices like the herd of suits move along Wall Street at lunch hour.

Not that Tom Coughlin is a softee, but if Bennett was signed by the Bucs and reported to spring practice at 291 pounds like he did last year, it would not be pretty.

Not saying a lot of good things about NY either. Might be a good idea to just be quiet til you’ve got the money!

I’m torn with this guy. Can block & catch and really help the team. Seems like the biggest knuckle head ever (going all the way back to Cowboys Hard Knocks HBO). Drops passes though too. And is NON Stop talking on Twitter

  3. MadMax Says:

Interesting. I hope we get him. I wont have TE so high on my list if we do.

I am all in for a Bennett brothers reunion. it’s a good story and both will get paid so happy players = wins. I also like the fact that Bennett is working out with McCoy and Miller and not on his own somewhere waiting on the brinks truck pull up

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

PFT just reported that Roy Miller has broken off contract talks with the Bucs and will become a free agent. Apparently his agent believes what the Bucs are offering isn’t close to what Miller can get as a free agent. It’ll be interesting to see if this is just posturing or if they end up having to replace him with another capable run stopper, maybe one who can actually rush the passer as well.

  6. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    Martellus isn’t a Buccaneer Man.

Having watched more than my liking of NY football, I can promise you Dustin Keller is hand’s down the better tight end. He might not have the same blocking skills as Martellus, but Keller’s routes are run sharp and his hands are like sticky glue.

  7. bucfat Says:

let me just say. I hope we dont sign Martellus Bennett. Or resign his brother. let some other team make that mistake.
Most men in the nfl play there best on the last year of there contract then they get paid, you never hear from them again.
Plus i dont want to see Michael Bennett celebrate on the field anymore. he’s terrible haha
We need pass rushers and a Blocking TE…..DB’s and QB

  8. bucfat Says:

Martellus Bennett is a knucklehead. and i know his thug personality wont cut it with coach Schiano. so im not worry. lets get football players who love the game and not just chasing the money.

  9. Big Rob Says:

We do not ask our NT to rush the passer. It’s just not what our defense requires. Stop with the pas rushing NT garbage. Our NT just needs to take up blockers so McCoy gets 1 on 1’s and the linebackers are kept free of blockers. That’s something that should be pretty easy to replace.

  10. bucfat Says:

Coach Garrett heard enough bad mouthing from Bennett in Dallas. think he is promoting signing Bennett. NOPE!

  11. SirustheVirus Says:

Both Bennetts are 1 year wonders and I’d rather take any of the top 5 TE in the draft over him. He’s not that good and drops to many passes. Bucs would be smart to just move down the draft as much as they can to aquire more picks(anything they can get that’s fair) and just draft one if the late 1st round. This way they have a 4 year deal with a 5th year option and can take CB in the 2nd. I don’t think Rhodes is going to be there at 13 anymore. Titans or Miami will probably take him. Milliner won’t make it past the Browns. If we aren’t going to use Blount I’d like to see him on the trading block.

@bucfat Anyone that is implying that Bennett played as well as he did last year because it was his contract year is just being an idiot. Bennett was a UDFA and had to bust his ass to see increased playing time year after year. In 2011 when he started you never saw him take off plays or be ineffective. He was very effective as indicated by PFF’s stats of 2011, he just did not have as many sacks as he did in 2012.

And don’t forget that players need increased playing time to get better at their trade. Who knows, may be Bennett still has a lot of room to grow as last year was his first full year as a starter since he has been in the league.

‘Who knows, may be Bennett still has a lot of room to grow as last year was his first full year as a starter since he has been in the league.”

How much are you willing to pay to find out?

They invested in a 1st and 2nd round DE with Bennett already on the roster. Great DE’s don’t take years and years to develop, neither do TE’s for that matter. I’ll pass on both boys if they’re looking to make this their big “life-after-football” contract.

  14. zam Says:

Pass, thanks. We’re not talking about an elite tight end, and we’ve had enough so-so players who ran into trouble because they craved excitement.

  15. Jonny 3.3 Says:

@gotbbucs: I said Bennett COULD get better than what he already is and he is at the moment a good DE. He should get paid as much as the good DEs of the NFL make, which is a few Millions less than the elite ones. Any contract that averages less than 8 Mil/yr is a good contract for Bennett.

I actually agree with your logic that great DEs don’t take years to develop. This is the reason we must hold on to Bennett who has proved he can be good at least. Bowers and Clayborn meanwhile have been mediocre at best thus far. We should not let Bennett go hoping these 2 injury prone hustle players can replicate his production.

  16. Capt. Tim Says:

Sure hope that bus load of Angels arrives here soon. Nobody else is worthy of being a Buc, apparently

Aren’t some of you the same idiots that kept talking up the total waste- talibum?
And crying to draft the Honeybum- the drug addict who benched 4 times and the combine? Didn’t even bother to get in shape?

Michael Bennett has played great both last year.

Marcellius is an upgrade over what we have

I, unfortunately, have to go to NY city occasionally. To get from point A to point B is a monumental task, that requires planning. Everything is an intensive chore.

By comparison, Tampa is a relaxed, enjoyable place to live.

But the pace is totally different, when first arriving here

  17. gotbbucs Says:

    @ Jonny
I’m with you in resigning Bennett if he’s not trying to shoot the moon.

  18. teacherman777 Says:

Please don’t refer to Tampa as “the south” again.

It will remind people of Doug Williams getting death threats from racist fans.

Tampa Bay is now a Melting Pot.

  19. Tomcin Says:

I say cut Q Black & Wright & sign Bennett 7.5 mil 3 yrs & still have money left over.
