Revis Shopping Heats Up
February 27th, 2013The Bucs can’t fix their heinous secondary with one new face, but adding Darrelle Revis to the defensive backfield would deliver an immediate impact felt across the NFC.
Per the New York Daily News, new Jets general manager John Idzik was shopping a trade of Revis at the NFL Scouting Combine, which ended yesterday. Idzik worked about 10 years in Tampa alongside Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik, the Bucs desperately need a cornerback and have the available cash to pay Revis, and Revis played for Dave Wannstedt in college, which means he’s probably in the “Buccaneer Man” mold Greg Schiano often references.
You think the Bucs were a part of those trade talks? Joe sure does.
Revis is coming off a blown knee and surgery. He’s supposed to be on schedule to return before training camp. Joe would give up just about anything — not Rachel Watson — for a healthy Revis, but that knee injury has to significantly cut Revis’ value.
Even though guys return to top form faster and faster from major knee surgery, Joe would vomit if the Bucs coughed up more than a first round pick and an insignificant player.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:35 am
A second this year and maybe a conditional pick depending on Revis’ performance…
February 27th, 2013 at 8:39 am
This draft is deep, not top heavy, I’d give up a first this year.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:40 am
No trade of a first Round pick for a cb who blew a knee out. Good player or not. Would you draft a cb @ # 13 who blew out his kneek? no why trade for one.
February 27th, 2013 at 8:46 am
@ rusty
Because hes been an elite cornerback for the past five years. A corner drafted at 13 has proven nothing. Plus acl injuries have come a long way…I dont think the bucs should trade for him either but your argument is weak
February 27th, 2013 at 8:49 am
Make a bold move. Make the fans happy. A first-rounder for Revis is NOT a gamble as it relates to everything else in the NFL.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:03 am
Do it Dom!! Do it!! This years first should do it
February 27th, 2013 at 9:05 am
The other piece of this equation is signing Revis to a long term deal after the trade, which from what I understand, Revis is looking to be the highest paid corner in the league, despite coming of the injury. AND he’s willing to play out his contract this year to be a UFA next year (Franchise Tag will not be an option), and go to the highest bidder, which if he has a normal Revis year, will make him the highest paid corner in the league.
I cannot see the Bucs making that kind of deal with Revis given the current unknowns around him.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:06 am
@keith
That move would not make the Fans happy. trading a first ( and probably a conditional pick on performance ) is a waste. is he an upgrade yes. put he is also close to 30 years old. that is where CB start to slow. We already traded a second for Win-slow and got a 1 1/2 of play for it. Not worth it, especially with all the holes that our Pop-star has to continuously have to fill.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:14 am
We don’t need an elite “getting old” and injured corner at an inflated salary. Invest the money up front and draft young corners.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:15 am
I would not give up much for him. Being close to the NY media I hear all the rumblings about Revis. He is never happy with money and the Jets are going to trade him the same way we will release Wright.
The question is what is Blount worth to the Jets. Is he worth a second round pick? I don’t see many better backs in this years draft.
It’s getting off cheap but I would trade Blount and our 3rd round pick. That’s it. I don’t see a better offer from other teams. If you compare a late first round pick from the 49ners or the Patriots to the offer above what would you take if you we’re the Jets?
February 27th, 2013 at 9:15 am
@ T in Orlando
He doesn’t want to be the highest paid corner, he wants to be the highest paid defensive player regardless of position. The guy is a supreme talent but he is always asking for a new contract and I wouldn’t want to out up with that.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:16 am
Like I said yesterday-
Sure he’s “WAS” a 3x All-Pro (before the ACL injury)
Recap:
*“He torn anterior cruciate ligament in a non-contact play against the Dolphins as he tried to defend a screen pass in the open field.”
*Placed on injured reserve on October 12, 2012
*Generally takes six to nine months to recover
*As of right now he is basically 4 months into his rehab. Dude hasn’t been in ANY CONTACT DRILLS. Hasn’t tackled a damn soul, or shown ANYONE that he’s fully recovered. And has the nerve to be asking for QB money(WTF)
February 27th, 2013 at 9:16 am
Our 1st and Blount to NYJ for Revis and a 6th.
Adding Revis to our CBs could be the best possible thing to do with the 13th pick, hands down.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:21 am
Can anyone, name the last CB on a SUPER BOWL WINNING TEAM that was getting paid like the TOP QB’S in the League?
Pittsburgh Steelers
Dallas Cowboys
New England Patriots
San Francisco 49ers
Green Bay Packers
New York Giants
Washington Redskins
Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders
Miami Dolphins
Dam still cant find Not one. Sure Sanders & Law made some good money. But ELITE QB money.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:22 am
LUVMYBUCS,
We need to pay the man. He is a baller.
Look at Adrian Peterson, he dillutes your arguement on ligament speak.
Look, everyone, is getting the wrong idea about Revis. He was with the loud mouth, Suzy Kolber Shmoozing, HBO telethon, Spanish reporter harrassing, outspoken Jets.
The Jets are all about tabloids, and not Super Bowls. Revis gets a bad wrap because of their mishandling of a Franchise.
Revis deserves the best money in the game for a CB, why in the heck won’t we? He would only cost us about 4-6 million more per year than GMC.
What in the heck has GMC done to warrant his 11 million dollar payday, one probowl and two injury seasons.
Look at Revis’ resume, understand the Jets were a circus under Tennebaum, and for the love of god stop mentioning ACL. Adrian Peterson doesn’t care to hear about ACLs anymore, 2K yards rushing later……
February 27th, 2013 at 9:25 am
LUVMYBUCS,
16,000,000.00 reasons for Revis to come to Tampa.
He is the best in the NFL at CB, he deserves the biggest paycheck, as he is the top 1% of his field.
The salary cap will be right around 120,000,0000, so that would be roughly 13.5% of our salary cap.
Currently, 13.5% of our salary cap was tied up in: Eric Wright, Quincy Black, Jeremy Trueblood, Reejus Benn. <—ALL unproductive players.
With the addition of Revis, we could lock up the best lock down CB in the game, and all at a rate of 13.5% being better spent on the best.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:28 am
be strategic dom, jets are desperate for cap situation… give him the 4th that new england gave to us!!!
i know revis worth more than that, but we need to take advantage of the jets cap situation, and that ACL story….
more than that im not sure at all
February 27th, 2013 at 9:29 am
YOU DO NOT –AND– I REPEAT DO NOT GIVE UP– A 1ST ROUND PROSPECT+QB MONEY TO FOR A CB –THAT HAS NOT SHOWN ANYONE THAT HE’S FULLY RECOVERED CATASTROPHIC INJURY.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:29 am
Pick up Sean Smtih in free agency and draft Xavier Rhodes. 2 sod CB’s for half he price of one. We need CB,FS,DE,OLB,RT,and TE. Giving away picks is just going to set us back. Revis ahead of schedule!! They always say players are ahead of schedule. Jets dropped from #1 to #2 in pass defense. They did fine with out him. You know how you get a round Revis. 2 TE set like the Patriots. Then you get a 16 mil a year guy blocking a Brandon Lloyd while they throw to a Gronk,Hernendez, or a Welker.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:30 am
What first round pick is anywhere near Revis’s zip code? Too much value is placed on draft picks, they aren’t some sort of guarantee. I eagerly await your answers on what players are better than Revis…
February 27th, 2013 at 9:31 am
Nah. Xavier Rhodes looked good enough yesterday and on tape to warrant being selected 13th. I would rather have a bunch of good players in the secondary instead of one stud and bunch of scrubs. Give me Sean Jones and Xavier Rhodes and our secondary will be better ten fold.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:34 am
Bucs fans its easy to say hey get Revis make fans happy, however making bucs fans happy apparently isn’t so easy to do. So if we get Revis and for some reason he gets hurt… What’s the first thing that we will hear??? He’s a bum cut him blah blah. I will say this we are in good draft position and we have lots of room when it comes to the cap. There is NO excuse for next season when it comes to losing and not competing
February 27th, 2013 at 9:35 am
Wait till next year.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:36 am
A lot of people on this page would run this Franchise into the ground if they were given Mark Dominick’s job. Giving up premium draft picks like they mean nothing, and then following that up by paying $16million a year to a 30 year old CB coming off an ACL tear? Yep, that sure sounds smart.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:39 am
LOL,
Adrian Peterson, argument is useless. This guys is a PHYSICAL FREAK. HE CAN RUN THROUGH A BRICK WALLS-LEAP TALL BUILDINGS WITH A SINGLE BOUND.
NO COMPARISION
February 27th, 2013 at 9:42 am
If we get Revis, who the F says we can’t pick up another corner in the draft? Who the hell says we can’t address other needs? Don’t you think Dominik knows we have other needs? I am quite sure he isn’t gonna handcuff the Bucs. Stop being such worrying little ninnies. I’d rather roll the dice on a PROVEN player (the BEST CB in the league) being healthy then hoping whomever we draft with the 13th pick will be half as good as a healthy Revis.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:42 am
LIKE I SAID
Can anyone, name the last CB on a SUPER BOWL WINNING TEAM that was getting paid like the TOP QB’S in the League?
February 27th, 2013 at 9:44 am
We are not 1 player away from a Superbowl. We need 2 corners not 1. The only way I want him is if we get him cheap. Nothing more than a 3 rd. pick and a player.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:45 am
Hey Walter – Revis is 27 not 30. Also, please oh pretty please tell me who in the draft is better than Revis? I’ll go ahead and answer for you. Nobody.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:46 am
REVIS WAS BANGED UP BEFORE THE INJURY. NEW YORK MEDIA & FANS WERE ALREADY GETTING TIRED OF HIS WHINING & LACK OF IMPACT PLAYS.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:51 am
A CB WHO IS PUSHING 30-RECOVERING-(NOT RECOVERED )FROM A CATASTROPHIC INJURY-IS NOT WORHT THE RISK.
February 27th, 2013 at 9:58 am
Of the Top 10 passing defenses this year. Not one CB on either team was getting paid like an Elite QB. Crazy how the Jets passing defense was ranked #2 in the league without him.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:00 am
Our DLine played well, resign those guys to keep the line together trade for revis n draft another cb. Hell draft two while u at it. We still will have cap space n picks to address LB n safety. Go Bucs!!
February 27th, 2013 at 10:10 am
Use the Cap Space to Improve Depth + add a few starters.
DE
DT
CB
FS
Draft a few more good prospects at the same position. And we wil be a better overall team, with some quality debt on defense.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:18 am
Look at all the truth stretchers on both sides of this argument. Everyone is just making up BS about Revis’ age, injury history, rehab time, fan sentiment; you’d think we were telling stories in a middle school B-ball-shot-around.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:37 am
What no one is talking about is the future cap issues that will result from signing Revis when we will have our own to re-sign in the future. I just don’t see signing Revis as a smart move cap-wise. If Freeman bounces back this year we will have to re-sign him, and I’m sure we’d wish we had all the cap room we used up on Revis to do so. Let Revis go. Let’s acquire and develop our own talent.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:37 am
I would not give up a first or second round pick for Revis, nor would I pay him over $10 mil per year. So if it is a third round pick with a restructured contract, I’d do it. Glad it isn’t my call.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:38 am
AGE-27(28 July)
Darrelle Revis has been dealing with a hip flexor since Monday.
Revis picked up the minor injury during the third preseason game against the Giants. “We’re just going to monitor it. I mean, I can play. I’m 100 percent, it’s just a little sore and bothering me a little bit,” Revis said. The shutdown corner has a date with Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and the Cowboys in Week 1.Source: ESPN New York *He admitted it affected his play most of 2011 season
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen would almost be “surprised” if Darrelle Revis shows up for Day 1 of training camp.
Revis did participate in the offseason program, but has subtly dropped hints that he’s not happy with his contract situation. Despite holding out in 2010, he’s owed “just” $13.5 million over the next two seasons. Of course, the Jets have paid him $32.5 million during the last two seasons. Remember that when Revis held out of training camp in 2010, he spent the first half of the season limited by a hamstring issue.

Darrelle Revis said that “something’s got to happen sooner or later in terms of my future with the” Jets.
Revis admitted that he was close to holding out even though he has two years left on the “band-aid” contract he signed in 2010. The Jets can be sure that they’ll need to work out a new deal with their All-Pro corner prior to the 2013 season if they want to avoid drama. “I want to be a Jet for life,” Revis said. “But if management doesn’t see fit, then I have to move on.”

Darrelle Revis left Sunday’s game against the Bills in the fourth quarter with a head injury and is questionable to return.
The Jets pulled most of their starters after jumping out to a 41-7 lead. The fear though, is that Revis may have suffered a concussion. Stevie Johnson got loose for a meaningless touchdown late in the fourth quarter after Revis left.
Sun, Sep 9, 2012 04:05:00 PM
Darrelle Revis (concussion) has been cleared for physical activity, but not practice.
It’s a sign that Revis is on the right track with his baseline testing. The next step in the league’s concussion protocol is to be cleared for practice and then contact. Kyle Wilson would start opposite Antonio Cromartie if Revis ends up out.
The Jets expect to make a decision on Darrelle Revis’ (concussion) Week 2 availability by Saturday.
Despite the early-week optimism, Revis has not been cleared for contact as of Thursday afternoon. The Jets have not tipped their hands on which Steelers receiver Revis would cover if he ends up sitting out. Owners of Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown should check back by Sunday morning for an update.Source: ESPN New York Thu, Sep 13, 2012 02:06:00 PM
Darrelle Revis (concussion) was limited in Jets practice Friday and is “still unsure” of his Week 2 status.
He got in a few team reps. We don’t expect to know Revis’ availability until Saturday, when the Jets reveal their intentions about the team charter to Pittsburgh. If Revis is on the plane, Rex Ryan says he’ll be playing.
Darrelle Revis (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.
Revis was cleared to run around with teammates during some 11-on-11 drills at Friday’s practice, but he hasn’t gotten the go-ahead to face contact and will not make the trip to the Steel City. With Dustin Keller (hamstring) also inactive, the Jets will be shorthanded for Sunday’s game. Look for Antonio Cromartie to work mostly against Mike Wallace while Antonio Brown matches up with some combination of Kyle Wilson and Ellis Lankster. Brown’s matchup went from the toughest in the league to perhaps one of the most favorable.
Jets coach Rex Ryan doesn’t believe it’s a lock Darrelle Revis (concussion) will be ready for Week 3.
“I don’t think you can assume that,” Ryan said Monday. “To the NFL standards, he has to pass those tests. Right now, he looks to be doing well, so hopefully he will be playing.” The Jets struggled to contain Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown in Sunday’s loss, and desperately need the captain of their defense back for this week’s tilt with the Dolphins. Revis’ status should be updated Wednesday.
Source: New York Daily News
Darrelle Revis (concussion) is listed as probable for Week 3.
He’ll be covering Miami’s best receiver on Sunday, whoever that may be.
Darrelle Revis left Sunday’s Dolphins-Jets game in the third quarter with a left knee injury.
He was immediately ruled out for the final quarter. Revis was trying to cut back to keep his footing on a possible tackle attempt when the left knee buckled. He didn’t get up for about two minutes, holding his head in his hands. It was a non-contact injury, which doesn’t typically end well. Revis limped noticeably as he made his way to the sideline.
Per terms of his contract, the Jets can’t use the franchise tag on Darrelle Revis (injured reserve, knee) when his contract is up after the 2013 season.
Now that Revis has a torn ACL, the Jets are unlikely to negotiate an extension with him before next season. That means he’s expected to hit unrestricted free agency in the spring of 2014. Revis, who turns 28 in July, will have to prove the health of his knee before breaking the bank. If he can’t, this injury probably cost him somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million guaranteed.
According to ESPN New York, Darrelle Revis is “believed” to be seeking $16 million annually and $60 million guaranteed on his next contract.
For perspective, Mario Williams signed a contract last March paying him $16 million per year but with “only” $50 million guaranteed. It made him the highest paid defensive player in league history. New Jets GM John Idzik met with his All-Pro cornerback on Friday, but was noncommittal on Revis’ future at his introductory press conference, which speaks volumes. The Jets only have Revis signed through 2013. Mired in the worst salary cap situation in football, the Jets simply won’t be able to pay the man.
Source: ESPN New York
The New York Post reports the Jets had discussed trading Darrelle Revis beforehe suffered a torn ACL in Week 2.
The Post was informed that “more than one” GM reached out to the Jets and Revis’ agents at the time. It’s an indication that Revis hasn’t been in the Jets’ long-term plans for quite some time now, though that can change with John Idzik now running the show, not Mike Tannebaum. Predictably, rival sources have come forward to tell the New York Daily News the Jets never shopped Revis before his injury. It’s going to be an extremely long offseason in New York.

February 27th, 2013 at 10:44 am
LUVMYBUCS i see what your saying there and I’ll agree.
We will be damage for a good while if we trade Revis for his service at one year and beyond. He will be asking for a lot of money, money that we can use in other areas. What we waste on one man can be be used for 2 or even 3 players in other areas of need. Revis will improve our secondary, but as it was mentioned would you pay top dollars for a player who’s liability and loss will be greater to Revis compared to a 1st round or FA we pickup.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:47 am
Darrelle Revis underwent surgery this morning, going under the knife as Giants team doctor and orthopedic surgeon Russ Warren performed the procedure.
By Mike Vorkunov/The Star-Ledger / October 16, 2012
Revis is only *131 days into his Rehab
February 27th, 2013 at 10:53 am
LUVMYBUCS,
No comparison from Revis to Adrian Peterson?
Aren’t they both:
NFL players
Best at their position
Coming off of an ACL injury, and Peterson’s was much worse.
How can you say “knee injuries will ruin you”, and you will call Peterson a freak?
It is call modern medicine. Please remove the blinders from your eyes, and check a calendar. It is 2013, pretty cool stuff can happen, when it comes to orthopedics.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:53 am
No way…Not a first…If cleared and signed maybe a 2nd…
He’s good..but trouble too.
February 27th, 2013 at 10:56 am
We have 40 million in cap space, or 33% availability.
13.5% to Revis.
Our QB sure as heck hasn’t earned that kind of money.
Pay Revis what he deserves, and accept the facts; to be the best sometimes you need to pay the best.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:03 am
Everyone called me an idiot last year for saying take Wallace for our 1st rd pick, but this year its ok to get rid of it ….. I like the way last year turned out better than getting Wallace and admit I was wrong. This year I say 2nd and later, but no first. He only has 1 year left on his deal before he demands to be paid $15 mil +. Not worth it.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:05 am
LUVMYBUCS is correct.
You can’t give up draft picks and tons of cash to a guy that can’t prove he’s healthy yet OR the same player he once was. Nobody is doubting was Revis has done, but it’s about what he CAN do.
We should invest that money elsewhere and be smart about how we spend.
IF Revis was healthy, different story.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:09 am
From High School-College-To Pros. Athletes have drawn to workout with Mr. Peterson. Because his workout regimen is extremely innovative, and has drawn comparison to Walter Payton’s workout regimen(Ground Breaking).
That’s why he has been called a PHYSICAL FREAK. Derrick Rose even got advice(Along with numerous others) from Peterson on the proper way to rehab. Have you Seen DRose Play Lately…O still Rehabbing
For every *Adrian Peterson(Not Many) there is a Terrell Thomas/Thomas Davis(Plenty)
February 27th, 2013 at 11:09 am
J 2.0,
If it is between Xavier Rhodes at the 13th pick vs trading and paying Revis, then I am trading and paying Revis.
That would be the best move. Revis at 90% of his self is still lethal.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:10 am
The Bucs have managed the cap exceptionally well to put themselves in a position where they can roll the dice here. Revis instantly improves the entire defense, especially since it allows Mark Barron to play his more natural in the box role.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:14 am
how about this….
We keep the most of our picks from this year…
Work out a deal where the Jets get our first maybe next year…
Would a combination of:
Lagarrette Blount
This year’s extra 4th, and 6th round picks
Next Year’s First (most likely in the 20s), (+and next years fourth???)
work?
That way we have more than enough picks to add cheap depth on the team.
Then go out and cut Eric Wright, Cut Black,
Draft Xavier Rhodes at 13
Draft Ertz or Olgatree (if they are there in the second round)
Draft Tyrann Matheiu in the 3rd.
Resign Roy Miller, Let Bennett walk if its more than 7 million per.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:18 am
Luvmybucs
Whats the point of having cap room if you use it on Eric Wright?
Revis is a top 5 player in this game and can be elite for another 4 years IMO.
We already have a good run defense, and adding Revis cutting off a side of the field and the opposing team’s best WR EVERY GAME moving forward will help our scheme.
Not only will he be WORTH IT on the field…
HE’LL SELL JERSEYS, AND SELL TICKETS off it…
February 27th, 2013 at 11:18 am
In this era of 3 & 4 WR Sets….it is foolish to drop a huge chunk of change or draft picks on a single DB. The Bucs need at least 4 SERVICEABLE DBs and several other positions filled. DL, LB, RB, Slot WR
February 27th, 2013 at 11:21 am
You guys are CRAZY!. He wants way too much money. Teams that win championships only spend that kind of money at the QB position. Everyone that thinks it’s acceptable to pay Revis that much are the ones with the blinders. I’d rather us have cap space for the foreseeable future then the hedge our future on one guy. Yes we can swallow a cap hit this year, but as other guys have their turn to resign and/or hit escalators in their contracts is Revis going to take a pay cut to keep the team together? His history in the league say HELL NO! He’s all about the money and he will try to ring every last ounce of cash out of the franchise he possibly can to the detriment of team success. He’s poison. Not Buccaneer man material.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:22 am
If the Knee checks out, and he agrees to sign a 3 year deal – do it. I feel a lot better about Revis lined up against Julio jones, than I do about Wright or Gaitor standing there!
It’s that simple
February 27th, 2013 at 11:24 am
I pass on him not worth the risk grab one from UFA for half price and draft one. It’s a deep class.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:35 am
@jarrett
I could give a dam about Garment sales. WE NEED CHAMPIONSHIPS. And this is a team sport. And our Team has plenty of holes all over the damn roster.
We need to add quality depth (Not Quality Debt). And a few more than capable starters. No need to gamble away, 10yrs of hard work now. We’re finally, in a position to to take that next leap as organization.
And I hated the Eric Wright Contract just for the record.
February 27th, 2013 at 11:47 am
Sean Jones and Xavier Rhodes>Revis. He would kill our cap space. We need BODIES! Not just one body. Look at the teams in our division. Atlanta-multiple weapons New Orleans- multiple weapons. Carolina-starting to get multiple weapons. One guy is not the answer. If we had a decent secondary then Revis would make us complete but when it’s as bad as it was you need MULTIPLE guys for MULTIPLE weapons
February 27th, 2013 at 11:57 am
I would vomit if they gave up more than a third round pick. I don’t want this cap-busting pain-in-the-a$$.
February 27th, 2013 at 12:56 pm
This team has way to many holes. It would be one thing if the guy were healthy. I’d rather have a few impact players: CB/S/LB/DE/TE, then breaking the bank on one player who is coming off an ACL injury.
For every Adrian Peterson, there’s a Derrick Rose. There’s no telling when he will back and if it will be at the same level. It’s a roll of the dice, when this team needs to keep building smartly.
February 27th, 2013 at 1:06 pm
Lets just move up in the draft and take Leon Sandcastle.
February 27th, 2013 at 1:12 pm
It would be one of the most ballsy and exciting moves Dom could make.
Get it done!!!
Here’s the deal peeps, IF Dom can get this done I am sure it will be done in a smart way where’s it’s not some sort of death sentence like many are assuming. He’s a smart guy, I trust him.
February 27th, 2013 at 1:16 pm
Sandcastle and Revis! Wow! I’m renewing my season tickets now, before the stampede!!
February 27th, 2013 at 1:22 pm
haha
February 27th, 2013 at 1:22 pm
If you guys don’t wanna spend money on Revis- then we are perfect now!we have the cheapest secondary in the league, even with Wrights huge overplayed contract.
We are already low dollar!! Yaaaa!!
But, we won’t ever win games with this bunch.
But if all we are concerned about is money- we’re sweet!
Personally, I never worry about salaries. A) I don’t have to pay them. B) this years ” highest salary” will be middle of the road In 2 years.
NFL owners spend money as ignorantly and carelessly as our congress!
Sad but true
February 27th, 2013 at 1:33 pm
You can’t be an informed fan and not care about the salary. When you eat up giant cap space on one guy, it limits what you can do for the rest of your team. That’s a simple fact. The question comes down to if Revis is worth the 16 million or whatever ridiculous money he is being paid or wants to be paid. I don’t think it makes sense to pay anyone but your QB that much money. It’s not about the money per se, it’s about the cap space left for other players.
So many fans seem to want to give up the farm (cap wise) for one guy. I think that’s completely F**KING stupid.

It is certainly not a deep draft class. Deep with above average to good players? Maybe sure. High end players do not exist in this draft outside Joeckel and a few others. Revis is a proven commodity, any pick isn’t assured of anything. The Bucs have the cap room, both now and in the future, to make this happen. I’m gonna laugh (and cry) if the Saints or Falcons jump the Bucs and get him instead.

Carolina is currently pursuing Mike Wallace from Pittsburg
There is no Darrell Revis in this draft. Milliner is good, but long gone before 13th pick.
Revis- expensive
Not being humiliated by Atlanta, New Orleans, and Carolina
Priceless.
We had 30 million in cap room last season. I don’t watch cap room. I watch football. Cap room didn’t keep us from looking pathetic against the hated Ryan and Brees.
Spend the damn money, and get SOMEBODY that can cover a good receiver!!

I think it all boils down to a couple things. First of all, the health of Revis is first and foremost. I realize that ACL’s are kind of like sprained ankles nowadays, but it still can be hindering for certain players while not at all for others. Being a fraction of a second slower can make the difference between an INT and a TD. I’ve never torn mine, but from what I hear from friends who have, it’s just as much a mental issue as a physical. You have to trust that your knee will hold up. Second, is our goal to win right away, or in the future? If our goal is to get to the playoffs and make some noise in 2013, then Revis is the guy (assuming he’s healthy). Highly unlikely you will find anyone in the draft better. Certainly not as polished and ready for game action. Rookie CB’s usually have some growing pains. Revis is a big, physical corner that would appear to fit our system perfectly, but there is the question of how long he will be a all pro type player. Ronde Barber’s are very rare. It’s slightly unrealistic to believe he will get better. He is much more likely to have his play decline. Personally, I would do the deal. I want to be good now, I’ll worry about the future later. Then again, I’m no GM and don’t have my job on the line, so it’s a much easier decision for me.

I’m all for getting CBs, but there’s this superstar mentality. Everybody wants to bring in all these big-name big-money guys. I think we would be improving the team much more by paying for 3 capable younger starting CBs without injury concern than paying for 1 Revis. Adding to the talent base broadly is still needed on this team and I just don’t see Revis being worth what he’s gonna cost in salary or draft pick compensation. BIG NO!

I think simply put Revis is not a “Buccaneer Man” take the age out of it, take the knee out of it. the bottom line is Revis is far from a Buccaneer man. I highly doubt Schiano would bring in a NON Buccaneer man this early in the process. Maybe year 4 or 5 but not year 2 in a culture change. No doubt a healthy Revis is a shutdown corner that being said I like the fact LUVMYBUCS pointed out that the top 10 defense did not have a DB making QB coin. I personally think the best move is get Smith and draft Rhoades and take a third round CB for depth grab a TE or RT in round 2… I am on the fence with honey badger no doubt he would be exciting but I have a feeling the old Florida state moto might apply to the badger he comes to town, Come on vacation and leave on probation…

revis would have an impact similar to Vincent Jackson’s impact on the offense. takes a huge load off of everyone else and his presence is enough to allow the team to comfortably play a very aggressive scheme.
if he’s healthy. conditional picks based on snaps played and whether we can extend him would be my preference, and i would worry less about the cap hit of a new Revis deal
the cap takes a nice jump upwards in 2015 i think, so basically revis’ pay would be a cap management issue for the next 2 seasons only, and we look well situated with the cap in that window
maybe a 2nd rounder would be nice, and the bucs could make an effort to trade down in the first to recoup the pick

Curmudgeon,
It’s not the Superstar syndrome. It’s the fact that rookies take a couple years to actually grasp their job. Ronde said he was late in his second year before he become a decent NFL cornerback. It’s a big transition.
Not with Revis. He’s the best there is. Right now. And we can get him for a second round pick.
I want to draft a talented rookie CB. Then throw him in with Revis. Will shorten his learning curve.
Win now, and be prepared to win later
And I never have a problem spending someone else’s money.

Trade up into the late 1st round like last year… then trade that pick for Revis.
Sign the CB from Philly… you know, the guy who takes lunch breaks in the car.
Sign Laron Landry.
Keep Wright.
And all of a sudden, the Bucs secondary looks GOOOOD.
Summary:
1-CB) Revis Traded late 1st rnd
2-CB) Nnamdi Asomugha FA signed
3-S) Landry FA signed
3-CB) Keep Eric Wright for another year since we have salary cap room

Risky move………BUT HUGE REWARD if it works out. I would gamble on Revis. Hell, even if he’s crippled he’s still an upgrade to what we have.

@Buc Fan #238
LOL that’s a perfect dream scenario bro. The chances of a Led Zeppelin reunion are better than that.

Just read 49’rs are after Revis. They have 15 picks in the Draft and ready to make a deal. Jason Cole on Yahoo.

Capt. Tim… It’s not about the money, it’s about the salary cap… and there are better ways to spend cap space than 16 million a year on one player who isn’t even your QB. Add into the fact that he’s a me-first guy, and I just don’t think we’d get value out of that.
I hope SF goes after him to minimize the chance we end up with him.
BF238-
There’s a reason why Nnamdi Asomugha was a bust in Philly. Why would we want him? Are you smoking crack? And why the h3LL would we want to keep Eric Wright around? THe dude’s a turd.

Joe,
I agree with a lot of what you have to say, but giving up a 1st round pick is far more than what Revis is worth. He is worth is contract, end of discussion. We’re not talking about a bargain player here. A first round pick is far too much to give up for a player that is just going to ask for fair market value once he gets here. Why don’t people understand this? A player with or about to get a big contact has ZERO trade value. He is worth what his contract pays him, nothing more, nothing less. If the Bucs want to give up another player with a bloated salary, then that would be fair trade value. Not a high round draft pick!!!

Quincy Black-5 million
Eric Wright-7 million
Equals 12 million!
Combine those two salaries, and boom!
We have Darrel Revis!
And he is better than both of these guys combined!
Give him a huge signing bonus. Clearup space.
And immedialtely, we are playoff contenders.
Go Bucs!
Why not?
