Greg Schiano Wants Versatile Defenders
February 24th, 2013If the Bucs are going to add anyone to the front seven on defense, a likely prospect since linebacker Quincy Black is unlikely to recover from his nerve damage, (plus the real possibility that defensive end Michael Bennett could leave via free agency), Bucs coach Greg Schiano isn’t looking for a one-trick pony.
Schiano told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine he wants guys who can adjust and adapt on the fly.
“Well, anybody who has followed our defense knows there is plenty of opportunity to do that. I still–you live by it and you die by it. You still want to get after them four [or] three men. When you are really good you have a three men rush and can get pressure on the quarterback and then be able to drop eight,” Schiano said. “To be able to mix it up the one thing we live by first, second down, and especially on third down is we are going to be multiple. Move in and out. That’s why we need guys that are football smart and guys that really love to prepare and get ready for the games.”
Now Joe can understand why Schiano would want guys who can play in a 34 front just as easily as a 43 front. But as far as the pass rush goes, until and/or unless the Bucs can develop a consistent pass rush, Joe just wishes Schiano and defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan would forget the three-man front, especially against the likes of Drew Brees.

Even Adrian Clayborn tweeted last year “3 Man Rush????”…and stop drafting players like Najee Goode and Keith Tandy…..did they play at all????????

3 man rush is a bad idea with our group of guys, lets say we had Kruger, Suh and Vaughn Miller rushing the qb ( obviously never going to happen, just saying ) then we’d easily be able to rush 3. not with our group

The bucs beat New Orleans a few years ago last game of the season when Corey Lynch was playing using primarily a 3 man rush that game and the Seahawks used the same format the next week and beat the Saints in the playoffs.
No point to rush 4 if 3 gets the same useless pressure. But that is for a team with no life in its pass rush with better coverage. No pressure meanz no playoffs

The pass rush seemed to do better when we stopped all the line stunts and just went with the bull rush. If we can’t make the opposing QB feel uncomfortable, the secondary will get torched again. Brees and Ryan are just to good to let them sit in the pocket and check down to all their receiver options. I sure hope the Rock Star GM is cooking up a good solution.

Versatily they want? Paul Kruger is a Sam run defender and a nickel DE… the same could be said with Oregon’s Dion Jordan. Those are the kind of guys that would give this D versatility.

Sounds to me like schiano’s hoping Jarvis jones falls low enough for us to go up and get him, or deion Jordan is available at 13. Sounds like he wants his outside backer to be a hybrid and be able to pash rush or put his hand n the dirt on third down…ala Von miller type

If Jarvis Jones falls to #13…I’ll do the Happy Dance down Dale Mabry

That’s what baffled me all year last year. We would rush only three lineman when we clearly couldn’t get to the QB. We should have rushed four and when we had the right players begin experimenting with a three man rush. Quincy Black was not that answer and none of the backups had that experience either.

Jarvis Jones won’t make it past the 6th pick. I think the biggest impact player we could land at #13 would be DE Ezekiel Ansah.

Jones will fall into the second round ala Bowers.Hiting Alfred Morris in the hole is slightly more impact than Lamicheal James.I would be disapointed if we took Rhodes at 13.Trade down and take Ogletree,Jones,Bank’s,T’eo

We might have to use one of those fourth rounders to move up a few spots but if he falls to lets say 8 I think it’s a real possibility we trade up

Jones or Jordan, whoever is there.
Please be Jones……
