Which Dixie Chicks Corner Is Best Target?
February 16th, 2013Just thinking of the Bucs’ cornerback play last year makes Joe’s stomach turn. And no, it had nothing to do with the beers and pepperoni pizza he had last night either.
Earlier this week Joe was listening to Pat Kirwan, the former linebackers coach and NFL front office man who co-hosts “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Kirwan has a philosophy on teams trying to get over the hump and get into the playoffs looking to add a player via free agency to fill a major hole.
And with the Bucs, that hole at cornerback is bigger than the meteorite that landed in a Russian lake Thursday night.
Kirwan’s philosophy is to attempt to raid a division opponent, preferably the division champ. This plays right into Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik’s hands as the Dixie Chicks have two stud corners that are free agents.
This subject was talked about in an ESPN NFC South chat.

Hey Pat the bucs are scary short on corners. Heard they have room to make moves in free agency and its right around the corner…. Any thoughts? Dunta Robinson? Brent Grimes?
Pat Yasinskas
Suspect they’ll sign at least one FA corner. We’ll see who comes out of Atlanta. But there are some other guys out there I like — Tracy Porter, Cary Williams, Dominique Rogers Cromartie and more guys will come available between now and start of free agency.
Per Joe’s research, neither of these guys are locks to be a Bucs shutdown corner. Grimes is nearly 30 and is coming off of a torn Achilles. That scares the hell out of Joe. Then there is Robinson, who, if the Dixie Chicks decided to keep Grimes, likely will be a cap casuality. Joe sort of likes this guy. Some teams think he’s a dirty player, but the dude can flat out hit and he gets into opponents’ heads. Joe likes that attitude.
Problem with Robinson is, he will be 31 when the season rolls around and he can be toasty at times in pass coverage.
Would Joe love to see the Bucs weaken the Dixie Chicks while addressing a major area of need? You bet. But Joe isn’t sure which of these two guys is the best fit.

We need to look at how the NFL game is evolving, then look at the teams that are finding success. We are going to hybrid TE/WRs like Gronk, Graham, and Olsen. If Gonzalez doesn’t re-up with Atlanta, expect their 1st round pick to Eifert or Ertz. Then look at the big WRs like White and Jones – our own V-Jax!
No more 5-9 CBs, no Brent Grimes, please. We need long, lengthy, physical CBs like Seattle, that can attack at the LOS and bring the heat in coverage. In FA, Sean Smith, DRC, etc or in the draft Xavier Rhodes, Banks, Amerson all well over 6 feet and can take on the new age receivers.

Do not sign Robinson. We have rung his bell 3 straight games. He is the poster boy for the new concussion testing. How the Falcon’s got away with puttiing him back in the game. After he get’s up,stumbles to his feet,Visably concussed. Is a mystery to me.They should have been fined. With the independent concussion specialist now on every team’s sideline. He won’t be aloud to go back in anymore. The Buc’s have respect for their player’s and wouldn’t put our guy’s in a bad situation.Well except letting Nick’s play with that toe.

He just spears people with his helmet, not even attempting to wrap up in hopes that they fall down. No thanks.

let’s just say that neither ATL CB gets me real enthused… Pass.

@LUVMYBUCS
Go ahead, just list them all, lol, one is bound to stick to the wall at this point. Instead of just throwing names around, tell us about how each individual cornerback you have chosen could benefit our team. How are they going to be better than what we already have? By listing every FA out there, you’re bound to get it right. Is that what this is all about? To say you got it right? By listing all of them, how do you miss? LMAO
The Bucs will probably sign just one solid veteran CB, and he will be one in the top 5 at least. That IMO

Paul is right.Robinson is a crown down clown. To concussed to relize it’s his career that is going to be cut short.

@Macabee
Are you having any problems with the comment section of the TBT? It won’t load for me.

4everBucs,
I went to TBT/BucsBeat and TBT/Sports and no problems. Now they are using a new format and as always you have to click to get comments, then you have to click to comment. Anyway, good luck!
BTW, while I was at TBT/sports, there’s a juicy little rumor from a commenter that says Schiano was seen at the Tradewinds with Alex Smith. I don’t do rumors, so proceed at your own risk!

I think we should heavily consider Chris Gamble. He’s a very good CB, but the Panthers are most likely to cut him. Their Salary Cap situation is terrible.

Cary Williams is the man!
He plays with FIRE. He brings with him, the vibe of Ray Lewis.
I would love to bring a world champion Raven onto our roster.
He leaves it all on the field. He would be a great addition to our team.
Cary Williams is coming to Tampa.
And Eric Wright might be getting another chance.
Then draft 1 CB.
Boom. Upgraded secondary.

I’ll take Grimes over Robinson. Sure he’s injured. But Bowers and Suggs made it through their Achilles issues. Seem like surgeons are getting better with injuries now a days. Back in the day many would consider achillies career ending injury.
I rather the Bucs try to bring in 3 cbs in FA. Then draft 1 and address other depth and talent problems on the defense and te postions. I rather have vets to get us going in the right direction. Then draft good to great players as the vet either run out of juice in his career or demand higher pay without caring about the teams cap. It would be similar to early 2000’s Bucs. The main difference is the GM and scout actually know how to draft and evaulate talent a little bit better.
Most good teams has a blend of vets and youngsters. You build a team core through draft, but you can win now with experience and talent. It’s vital to find that right mix so the team can win now and continue to win years to come.
I’m optimistic about this team future. A couple of tweaks here and there and we will be fine.

Grimes is ELITE
He’s going to pick up right where he left off
