Rutgers Tally Reaches Nine
February 11th, 2013Joe’s written about the Bucs’ official 2013 coaching staff and all its changes, but it’s interesting to note the growing number of Rutgers men on staff.
After a thorough opportunity this offseason to court and consider the best coaches in the land, the New Schiano Order has finished with nine former Scarlet Knights, plus Schiano, so noted NJ.com.
Schiano’s staff on the Bucs features former Rutgers assistants John McNulty (quarterbacks coach), Brian Angelichio (tight ends), Phil Galiano (assistant special teams), Jeff Hafley (secondary), Bob Fraser (assistant defensive coordinator), Robb Smith (linebackers), Tem Lukabu (defensive assistant), Randy Melvin (defensive line) and Jay Butler (strength and conditioning).
Joe just wants to see these guys coach well and not get outcoached. It’s no surprise that Schiano prefers guys he can trust and believe in. Joe trusts Bucs fans will hold them all to the highest accountability.

Isn’t the new LB coach Robb Smith from Rutgers too?
Yes, Joe has counting issues. –Joe

There is lots that could be said about Schiano’s band of merrymen, but the pragmatic thing to do is to wish this motley crew well. If this works and the Bucs go to the playoffs or beyond, Schiano will be a genius. If not this will be a big part of the editorial comment on what went wrong! So, optimist that I am, Go Bucs!

Just remember, much of this same staff was responsible for turning the Rutgers program around; and most of these coaches have NFL experience. The Bucs need a turning around just as Rutgers did. Last year was a good start even with very little time to assemble the staff Schiano wanted. He took what he could get. So now we see some turnover and it makes good sense. Now I’m looking for more improvement this year. May the injury bug take an extended vacation and we see the Bucs make the playoffs.

Hope he’s not just surrounding himself with “yes men”. Obviously, Shiano is a “my way or the highway” type, but there will be times when he’s wrong and I hope there are a few strong enough coaches and personalties on his staff that will tell him he’s wrong when it needs to be done. This could be very dangerous.

Haven’t a lot of these guys been coaching in the NFL. The article would make one believe he has formed a college level coaching staff.

And the Schiano Coaching Tree grows!

What? ..if I were the Head Coach and my job was literally on the line each and every year, that’s all I would want to hire on my staff. Not a bunch of insubordinates.

Any boss wants people around him he can trust to do their jobs

You missed assistant strength and conditioning coach Bob Gilmartin. And, though not a coach, Bucs director of football operations Kevin MacConnell was deputy director of athletics at Rutgers.

This says to me, Schaino is putting it all on the line knowing he either puts a consistent winning team on the field or his tinure with the Bucs will be short lived. Unfortunately his future depends more on a good, smart, productive and accurate Josh Freeman than a merry band of coaches from Rutgers. I just hope he knows when to change quarterbacks if needed.
