Joe isn’t a big mock draft guy in that Joe’s not big on the mock draft types –who grow to an insane level in the final days leading to the draft — talking about guys “rising” and guys “falling.”
Bulls(p)it! This isn’t the New York Stock Exchange. If a team doesn’t have its draft board set by the end of March, there is something seriously wrong. Guys don’t rise and slide in late April much less the middle of February, barring getting pinched for a felony.
And putting together a mock draft before free agency — March 12 boys and girls — is akin to having a few beers and playing darts. Fun, but slightly more productive than useless.
For example, Joe pays about two percent attention to Mel Kiper’s mock draft. Currently, he has the Bucs selecting Notre Dame inside linebacker Manti Te’o. Come ‘on Mel, at least put a little thought behind your weak attempts, huh?
Another BSPNer, Todd McShay, another dubious source, has the Bucs selecting Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore. At least McShay put some thought behind this.
Now none of the draft gurus at NFL.com have Moore slipping below No. 6, and the Bucs pick at No. 13. That’s within range of a less-than-painful trade up by Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik if so inclined.
Bucs insiders have hinted that if the Bucs believe there is a pass rusher sitting at No. 13, one the team believes could give the Bucs an immediate impact, the Bucs would pull the trigger on said player. Also, given Dominik’s history of drafting defensive linemen, Moore somehow winding up with the Bucs isn’t an absurd thought.
Look, do the Bucs need cornerbacks? No question. Sadly, there are no elite corners this season but corners are three rounds deep Joe is told, meaning there is very good value at corner later in the draft than at No. 13.
Yes, some would suggest Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner is worthy of a high pick, but Joe heard former Bucs quarterback Shaun King (you know, one of only three Bucs quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to an NFL Championship game?) say that if Milliner was in last year’s draft, he may have been the third or fourth cornerback selected and the only reason Milliner is considered a high first round pick is because NFL teams are irrationally desperate for cornerbacks.
So the more Joe thinks about Moore coming to the Bucs, it really isn’t that far-fetched.

I guess it all comes down to, do you want the highest rated CB in the draft (regardless whether he deserves to be in the first round or not) or settle with one of the apparent drop offs after that.
What is being said is that Milliner is over-rated compared to last years draft but as of right now he’s consensus number one. If he’s actually a 2nd or 3rd rounder what does that say about the rest of those behind him? If the rest drop off in talent that much behind Milliner and he’s just an actual 2nd or 3rd rounder, doesn’t that make the rest 5th, 6th and 7th rounders? How are they going to be any better than what we already have? We need to draft at least 2 out of the top CB in this draft.

Guys, unless Roy Miller leaves via free agency, there is zero chance Dominik is spending a No. 1 pick on a defensive tackle. The Bucs are elated at Miller’s play, and clearly GMC has proven his worth.

I don’t think it’s out of the question at all that we would draft Te’o. He was a possible top 5 pick before the championship game and his imaginary girlfriend (or more appropriately, boyfriend). With Quincy Black possibly done forever, why not bring in Teo at MLB and move Foster outside? Teo is a damn good player, regardless of how he played the last game. If he’s available at 13 and he’s the best player available (which he most likely will be), why is it out of the question that we take him? Are you trying to tell me we couldn’t use a MLB that had 7 INT’s this year?

@Justin P – Why spend a first round pick on a pass rushing DT when that position is already filled? That is essentially paying first round money for a guy to play almost strictly on third downs. If Bowers and Clayborn are healthy, and as we already know, Bennett is more than capable of rushing from the inside, it just doesn’t make sense drafting a pass rush DT considering the talent already on the line.
Now, if the Bucs somehow ended up with another Gerald McCoy type talent who was able to play next to The Real McCoy, I would not complain at all. Personally, I think this team has more depth at DE than DT, though the versatility and quality of Bennett aids both positions.

I think it’s so funny how some people have seen a guy play one time, and think they can effectively evaluate his talent through that one game (with only the TV angles no less). I’m sure people are going to blast me and say they’ve seen him play a lot, blah blah blah blah blah, but that’s a bunch of BS if you think the guy can’t play.

@Hawaiian – If Manti is as good as folks say he is, I would not mind a shift through the LB corp. Foster played better this year but still struggled at times. When I watch his college film he looks more at home at SAM than MIKE.
I just want some excellent talent at CB. It seems it might not happen this year however.

@ Have A Nice Day…..Sharrif Floyd would be another McCoy. Could Also play LE. We need pass rush help. Last in NFL over 2 year period. Take Roy Miller out on Passing Downs, Can give McCoy a breather, Can give LE a breather. He would complete our D-Line

I’m with you 100%. i want a corner too, but if its not there, then don’t waste our first round pick on one. I hate reaching to fill a position. It almost never works out. I love Mason Foster, but I think he’d be much better at SAM too. Teo, Foster, and David sounds like a damn good LB core for many many years to come.

I’m not going to pretend to know anything about the college guys in the draft this year, but as a Bucs Fan I’d at least like to think that I have an idea about how Mark Dominik goes about his business, and I’m pretty sure that he knew the need that the Bucs were going to have a CB, even if he didn’t know Eric Wright was going to be an F-up, he knew that Talib would be and they wouldn’t be offering him a contract. Knowing those things he drafted Mark Barron over Maurice Claiborne, i’m fairly certain that he knew that there’d only be a couple of 1st RD CB, and that you could be quality CBs in the 2nd 3rd RDs, and Joe is right Dominik has placed a high value on pass rushers and rightfully so, they don’t come around often, and with Michael Bennett possibly cashing in else where, and the known injury troubles of the 3 guys we consider our best pass rushers, why not stock up on D-Lineman, especially DEs.

@Hawaiian Buc: its just coincidental that the hawaiian likes another Hawaiian. Anyways look at most of Te’o’s scouting reports, a lot of them question his ability to cover receivers in the NFL because of his limited athleticism. A lot of the interceptions he had were tipped passes by D-line or the ones thrown straight at him. Purely in coverage he graded inferior to guys like Alec Ogletree, Dion Jordan and Arthur Brown. Also he is stinking bad at blitzing. The guy has no enough speed to scare QBs nor does he have moves to disengage faster to bring the pressure. There is no upside to Te’o, what you see in him now which is a solid run defender is what you will get from him in NFL.
In comparison, Ogletree brings a lot of elements our other two linebackers lack.

Also you guys are so ridiculous with your favoritism here. If a guy of Damontre Moore’s skills and upside falls down to us, we would be crazy to pass on him. I see not one response actually addressing what Moore would do on Bucs roster. Instead we get to see a Hawaiian bang drum for Te’o and a Gaytor fan banging drum for Floyd.

Give it up. The Bucs love how Roy Miller is playing. If he stays with the Bucs, Joe will give you $100 if the Bucs draft a defensive tackle in the first round. The Bucs would draft a quarterback in the first round before defensive tackle, UNLESS Miller leaves via free agency. Miller is doing exactly what the Bucs want him to do.
Debating the merits of Miller’s play is a different argument.

There are only 3 ways to execute your draft,
#1 …Stand pat and take Best Player Available, they call this letting the
draft come to you
#2 …Stand pat and draft Best Player According to Need, sometimes a
reach but sometimes the gamble can pay-off. Riskier than #1
#3 …or do your best rendition of Vegas uninterrupted,
trading up and back, positioning for Best Player according to need
and $ value. Lots of work, can pay off, but also comes with a whole
lot of risk. Sometimes you miss out on the player you want by a
team ahead of you. Riskiest of all.

Remember these specific strategies only apply on the first two rounds.

We won’t be using a 1st round pick on a DT again anytime soon. You load up on DE’s and if you need better pass rush out of the DT position you slide a DE inside in your nickel defense. I don’t have much interest in using an early pick on a CB this year. We need at least one veteran FA to be back there and probably a 2nd or 3rd round pick like maybe David Amerson or Logan Ryan.

Kenny Vaccaro will be the best DB available at 13 and would make a huge impact. Slot WR’s, pass catching TE’s and the pistol formation are gonna be around a while and having two Safeties that can play all 3 downs makes the D prettydynamic

I see us trading down a few spots in the 1st and getting Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State. Then trading back into the late 1st and getting Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State.

Te’o is a late first rounder at best and does he even look like a Bucs LB? The answer is no. The best inside backer this year is A. Brown If you watched him at UM and K. State he looks exactly like L. David did at Nebraska undersized but so quick to read plays and shed blocks it dosn’t matter, I don’t know about other Bucs Fans but I would like to see another L. David as our ILB. The only way we select a LB other than J. Jones if he falls to us at 13 which I don’t think he will, is to trade back into the late first/Early second to select A. Brown or Ogletree out of UGA.

First of all, I’m not really Hawaiian. Second, I’ve seen the guy play since high school. So yes, I do have more knowledge of him than I do most other players. We don’t get as many SEC games out here as you do, but we get every Notre Dame game. I am often time forced to watch them because the SEC game I would prefer to watch isn’t on out here.
I’ve heard a lot of those criticisms, and they may very well be the case. That’s not what I see, but I acknowledge that I am no scout. I personally have never thought he was slow out there, as I’ve really yet to see him get Ray Lewis’d in a game (referring to Vernon Davis beating Lewis like a drum play after play in the Super Bowl). Some people may not have all the measurables (40 time, bench press, etc.), but they play fast when the pads come on. I see Te’o as one of those guys. I don’t believe in the Oakland Raiders philosophy of drafting players. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong. I do know this, he was projected as a possible top 5 pick. In order to be projected that high, there are obviously people (people who actually do this for a living) that believe he’s better than just a run stopper. So you can call it favoritism all you want, but it’s just what I believe. I’ve never been a coach, GM, scout, or even water boy for a football team, so I could very easily be wrong. So admittedly, I’m pretty much talking out of my arse. But I’d venture to say that you are too, so let’s not make like you are the second coming of Bill Polian.

Idk Joe, I would be willing to make that $100 wage and ill tell you why. McCoy would be a much more dominant player if he had someone next to him that could take away the double team that he got almost the entire season, and believe it or not he even faced alot of double teams in the pro bowl. The reason why he gets double teamed so much is because the opposing o line knows that no one else on the d line is much of a threat to collapse the pocket except for McCoy. If we put another great pass rusher next to him on the inside then opposing O lines would have to choice but to play him one on one. Then look out because McCoy would own this league.

Im not bashing miller because he is a good run stuffer, but he cant get to the QB or even put heat on him. he is no threat on passing downs and offenses know this. let me ask you, how many career sacks does Miller have? 3. that was 3! his last sack came back in 2010. you put someone better at getting to the QB next to McCoy and he would shine.

For those of you that don’t know the primary goal for the Nose Tackle and why they are not considered to be pass rushers.
The nose guard lines up in a two point stance with head up on the center about six to eighteen inches off the ball. In the 4-3 defense, the nose guard’s key is to read the offensive center to the ball. In run away, the nose guard’s job is to shed the blocker and pursue down the line of scrimmage, taking an angle of pursuit. The primary responsibility of the nose tackle in this scheme is to absorb multiple blockers so that other players in the defensive front can attack ball carriers and rush the quarterback.
Roy Miller was one of the biggest reasons why we had the best run defense.

When Adrian Clayborn went down, GMC was double-teamed pretty much the rest of the season.
Joe cannot tell you who, but there’s a suit at One Buc Palace that just raves about Roy Miller’s play and this is consistent to what Schiano believes. The Bucs just think the world of Miller. No, Joe cannot see it either at times but apparently, if not for Miller, GMC would have been triple-teamed much of the time, that Miller kept heat off of GMC with his play, which, Joe is told, is just what the coaches wanted from Miller.
Unless Miller leaves via free agency, Joe cannot imagine the Bucs drafting a defensive tackle in the first round with so many other needs (corner, right tackle, possible outside linebacker).

Star. Vacarro, or Ogletree. If we stay at #13, 1 of those 3 is the pick i would like to see on this team. All bring in something that helps the pass coverage on this defense (in their own way). All 3 fill a certain kind of need and all are talented enough to be worthy of the 13th overall! At least that’s my take. I still want the CB’s to come from the FA and see us fill some gaps in the defense with premier picks!

I’d be fine with Moore at 13 and a CB in round 2-3 and Free Agency.
I will say this though, from what I have seen, Milliner is a first round talent.

First off, they will not have to trade UP to get either. THey are both 2nd rounders most years.
They might possibly trade up for one of them out of round 2 to the lower part of round 1 if they go DE with pick 13.
Not a chance they trade up from 13 for either.
Don’t get me wrong, I like them both and think if they add 1 plus a free agent CB then they have a massive upgrade at the position. It is just that AT THIS POINT, taking any CB other than Milliner at 13 is not a good value pick.
The dropoff to the CBs that will be available in round 2-4 is not that much.

I’m not trying to take away anybody’s fun prognosticating on the draft, but it is somewhat meaningless to lock in on the draft way before the Combine, much less FA, where the draft is really defined.
What we really should be discussing is FA. With Dominik sitting on nearly 44mil should they release Quincy Black and Eric Wright, FA is going to be a buyer’s market with so many FAs hitting the market coupled with the number of teams in cap hell who must release some premium players to get under the cap. This could be a wild but enjoyable ride!
FA will set up the draft. My opinion, but we may go deeper into FA than we ever have and will ultimately determine how competitive the Bucs are in 2013. The draft may end up simply being icing on the cake!

If Moore is around at 13; which there is virtually no chance he will be then you take him all day long.
I’m intrigued also by what Star Lotuleilei would bring to the Bucs. He seems like a bit of an enigma but he has all the physical tools to be dominant just needs work between the ears.
I wouldn’t be upset with Hankins either… in obvious passing downs we could get more out of the interior… it’s not even a question.
Any quality depth on the defensive line would make me happy…. being bad at rushing the passer has to end soon.
