Schiano Describes Elite Quarterbacks
December 28th, 2012Put Matt Ryan among the game’s elite quarterbacks, says the leader of the New Schiano Order. It’s all about Ryan’s “commandership.”
Speaking to Atlanta reporters Wednesday, Greg Schiano described what makes a star QB.
“I think he’s in the elite status,” Schiano said of Matt Ryan. “I think he’s at that level. The kind of field command he has and the way he directs the operation. A lot of guys have big arms and there are a lot of guys that are mobile and all that, but it’s the way they lead, the commandership they have over their offense makes them elite.”
Does Schiano believe Josh Freeman can develop that kind of “commandership?”
If Joe could strap down Schiano and inject him with truth syrum, Joe surely would ask the head coach the following, “Have you lost confidence in Freeman?”
The answer would be very telling, regardless of Schiano’s take.

I’ll be surprised if Ryan stays in past the 1st qtr.

we need to lose this game….come Hell or High Water (its the difference between drafting JJWATT OR adrian clayborn

The look on Freeman’s face after an incomplete pass says it all. “I am not a leader, I am a complainer.” A leader sucks it up when someone else makes a mistake and they definately don’t show them up in front of others. Josh needs to own up to his mistakes and that starts with his on-field actions. I am not sure he can change that. It seems to come natural to him.

I’m telling you get Alex Smith’s agent on the phone and bring Kyle Orton in for a workout.
Freeman needs REAL competition.

Great piece Joe,
This is the truth. The Elite QB’s in the NFL command their huddle, team, and lockerroom. The truly Elite QB’s take ownus for their team’s shortcomings, and do not pass the blame.
Can Josh Freeman become a better leader? Can he command the huddle? Does Josh have the ability to look in the camera after a tough game and say, “Hey, it is on me, period.”
The truly Elite QB’s make no excuces.

@Ian
What a stupid comment. JJ Watt is very good no doubt. But so is Clayborn. He may not be as good as Watt but by no means is he a average to below average player. Either way you can draft great players no matter where you are. You are sounding more and more ignorant with every post.

@SteveK
Josh would say something more like, “Umm… We gotta play better, uhh I mean, you know?”

@Ian
i see you have gone into rocket science you absolutely dont know anything about what you are saying, its not about a round, its all a gamble.

If “elite” means “throwing to the other team” then Freeman’s a God damn Hall of Famer.

New Year’s letter to Josh Freeman
Come on Josh!
It’s time to step up and be the face of the Bucs on and off the field. Where is the confidence, the swagger, the attitude, the machismo, that all superheroes exhibit. When things are going bad in a game, where is that “not-to-worry I got this” smile that is always present on the face of Manning and Romo on the field? Where is your Cam Newton superman cape, your Giselle, your Aaron Rodgers sense of humor? When are you going to start having fun? I listen to your (de)pressers and they’re almost apologetic. That dulcet tone of voice is killing me. Where is the fire, the anger, the drive, the Farve-like arrogance?
This is your team. Let everyone know it! There shouldn’t be any doubt about who the man is. Only you can make that clear. Act like the star and leader of this team all the time and you will play like one on the field. Do something exciting once in a while. Get rid of the snakes and buy a red corvette. Go on a talk show. Make a commercial, date a Kardashian, do something! Anything to make me believe there’s a superstar – a real man in there somewhere instead of a 24 year old QB-in-training.
I still want to believe! In 2013, let’s see the grown-up Josh Freeman!
December 28th, 2012 at 12:44 pm
I think Shaun King’s assessment of Freeman is 100% accurate. Hes a tweener between good and elite class when he is on but when he is off – all but the bottom falls because he dont have the mental intangibles to inspire an organization or the entire team. So true.
I just want the season to end already. Enough of this torture. Freeman personally have ruined my excitement for football. I watch other pro teams like Green Bay and Seattle, San Fran, NE, hell even Indy/Washington and just get sickened looking at QBs that can impact the game.
I dont care whether they win or lose because the truth is we stink in the secondary and at QB. Nothing will change until those positions become more stable and dependable. Microcasm or our franchise the past 10 years or so. Plug one hole and a new leak starts; fix the new leak and the old plug leaks. This sucks gents.

But can say I dont knock the Glazers because they did try and have spent the money. So thanks Glazers you did your part.

@Architek
Great post. Couldn’t of said it better myself.
December 28th, 2012 at 12:55 pm
Great commanders aren’t morons. Freeman is a moron. See the disconnect?
December 28th, 2012 at 1:01 pm
@ Silence and Architek,
Right on!
We need more “QB impact” in our games.
And the, “Uh…yeah…I didn’t know any other plays, so we had a miscommunication” crap is getting old. Own up to your mediocrity.
December 28th, 2012 at 1:10 pm
If you strapped Miguel down and injected him with truth serum would he admit that he is Thomas 2.2?
December 28th, 2012 at 1:13 pm
@Architek
You are not alone… The feeling is mutual… Having a QB that impacts games is something that has long eluded this team… And now with the “Freeman needs 1 more year” EVERY season after season seems as if the Bucs have given up on striving to get that quality QB and instead they have resolved to just have whatsoever they can make of JF and be content with that…
I have at times wished I wasn’t such a loyal type person so that I could just become a fan of a team that knows how to build winning teams and have much success year after year so these football seasons would be more enjoyable and not so frustrating… 1 day the Bucs will get it figured out, hopefully it will happen in my lifetime!

Truth is Thomas loved Schiano, I’ve never been stricken with that psychosis.
Why not strive for excellence? Did you marry an ugly woman or did you pursue a Rachel Watson?
December 28th, 2012 at 6:05 pm
Matt Ryan is finally getting a little love
