Bucs Score One Pro Bowler: Gerald McCoy
December 26th, 2012This should silence the legions of Gerald McCoy bashers for at least an offseason.
McCoy has been named as the Buccaneers’ lone Pro Bowler for the 2012 season. McCoy did not win the fan vote at defensive tackle, so fellow NFC players and coaches put him over the top. Apparently, all that chatter from Bucs opponents about McCoy getting steady penetration and being a guy you gameplan against wasn’t a steaming pile of BS.
Kudos to McCoy for scoring this honor in his first injury-free season. And kudos to rockstar general manager Mark Dominik for drafting his first Pro Bowler.
Ronde Barber didn’t get in, and neither did Vincent Jackson, despite his stunning yards-per-catch numbers. Joe was a bit surprised about Jackson, and Barber, too, given that the Bucs icon won the fan vote at free safety.
Barber, Jackson and Doug Martin were named alternates, with Jackson and Martin declared “first alternates.”
Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones and Victor Cruz took the NFC wide receiver honors. Dashon Goldson (49ers) and Earl Thomas (Seahawks) got the nods at free safety.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:15 pm
“He set the record for disruptions in an NFL season,” said no one ever.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:15 pm
Vincent jackson is 4 in the nfl in rec yards but julio jones and cruz go to the pro bowl cruz barley has 1000 yds
December 26th, 2012 at 8:19 pm
But Cruz is known for his snazzy salsa dance… Jackson is known for going 95 yards and getting caught on the one… advantage… Cruz.
Both Barber and Jackson probably deserve to be there, I’m sure if either want to go, they will both be named as injury/Super Bowl replacements.

Congrats
December 26th, 2012 at 8:22 pm
I thought deserving Bucs went in this order:
1. Martin
2. Jackson
3. Barber
4. David
Congrats to McCoy for having a great under the radar season. Apparently Ian will eat some crow.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:22 pm
Thomas 2.2,
Wherever you are, McCoy says “Take Dat”!
December 26th, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Calling 2.2 LOL. … Good for McCoy. He must have deserved it.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:28 pm
What do you know? Coaches and O-linemen respect McCoy. Along with anyone who actually knows what they’re looking at.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:32 pm
A bit of a surprise but I am happy to see any Buccaneer go. Really shocked Lavonte is not even an alternate. Without the late season collapse most of the Bucs we all expected to go probably would have.
Losing in dramatic fashion to terrible teams doesn’t really impress people.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:33 pm
McCoy deserved it. Better play from DE forcing the QB up in the pocket and he would be in double digits in sacks.
I though Jackson and David deserved it too with Martin and Barber being alternates or backups.
I also think Penn should have got an alternate spot.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:41 pm
He really was the only defensive player to deserve it. I was hoping for Jackson too, but McCoy certainly deserved it.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Good for McCoy…hopefully we’ll get Bennet, Clayborn, and Bowers all back at 100% with a FA and rookie or two for some sort of rotation. Still not sure if we have that “sack specialist” at DE that I think we need.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Congratulations to Rockstar too. First of many draft picks to make pro bowl from him. Coming soon Martin, David, Barron, and FREEMAN. Mark my words Freeman will be a pro bowler one day. First Bucs draft pick pro bowler in a while.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
As first alternates, Jackson and Martin will probably go. The guys from the SB teams that have been there before tend to opt out at the slightest injury and a first alternate usually gets in.
December 26th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
there’s a guy on the radio (who got arrested for molesting a horse while drunk) all this morning talking about how bad McCoy still sucks. smh…….dude is CLUELESS or drunk
December 26th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
Congrats to GMAC…tough sledding the past few years from a health perspective and hard to stand out on a colon sucking team..if he had some help he would be a monster
December 26th, 2012 at 9:11 pm
Good job GMC first season to play all games first season to get a pro bowl!
December 26th, 2012 at 9:11 pm
Can not wait to hear how Ian bashes this. $1,000, 000 he downplays this. Def gonna lisyen tomorrow.
December 26th, 2012 at 9:16 pm
lil sir…thats exactly why he talks such garbage…so you’ll be sure to tune in..
December 26th, 2012 at 9:21 pm
Congrats to GMC !
lol I can remember all the post asking to trade GMC, just like a certain QB for the bucs I know….. 🙂
December 26th, 2012 at 9:31 pm
V-Jax can’t make a probowl until he has a league average QB or better.
December 26th, 2012 at 9:36 pm
I remember saying last year “if he stays healthy for a entire season, he’ll be in the probowl.”
The guy is good. No way around it.
December 26th, 2012 at 9:38 pm
Please let 2.2 back in Joe. Can’t wait to hear him make excuses.
December 26th, 2012 at 9:55 pm
ive bashed GMC even before we drafted him. But I have no prolem telling him congrats. Now if he will have a couple more seasons like this one. I might actually convert my feelings toward him. I believe Martin and Barber will make it as replacements and Jackson with an outside chance. But I think its a joke David got snubbed! he has a better case for the pro bowl over anyother Buc!! But the good news is he will be a Buc for many more years. And should continue improving along the way. We have a great young core and within a couple years, will contend on a regular basis!!! Go Bucs
December 26th, 2012 at 10:01 pm
We get to see what 93 brings to the table on a real good defense. Hope he gets some sacks.
December 26th, 2012 at 10:02 pm
I’d much rather have the respect of fellow players and coaches, who know the game, than stupid whiny fans. I’m glad McCoy got voted in and I’m even happier that it came from players and coaches.
This takes whatever tiny little bit of credibility the whiners/haters previously had away from them. Now if they want to hate, they have to come out and claim that they know more about football than the players and coaches in the NFC.
Good luck with that! Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
December 26th, 2012 at 10:15 pm
No barber?! No David?! For shame!!! Awesome surprise for McCoy at least we got that!
December 26th, 2012 at 10:21 pm
I didn’t know they played defense in the Pro Bowl.
December 26th, 2012 at 10:25 pm
Congrats GMC! Next year David, Martin, Nicks, Joseph wait for it Freeman!
December 26th, 2012 at 10:31 pm
WOW! surprised to see he got in. I am indifferent when it comes to McCoy, but his presences definitely makes this defense better though. Now if only he can get into the double digits in total sacks.
December 26th, 2012 at 10:35 pm
Lavonte David is the most deserving Buc who should have gotten into the Pro Bowl. to bad voters didnt see it that way. They will in time, though.
December 26th, 2012 at 10:43 pm
can”t wait to see Star Lotulelei or Jonathan Hankins next to him next year …..
December 26th, 2012 at 10:44 pm
I totally agree that David should have gotten in. However, he probably didn’t get in because of a lack of splash plays. Tackles aren’t as sexy as INT’s.
December 26th, 2012 at 10:58 pm
McCoy numbers would have been better if Clayborn wouldve stayed healthy. Much respect due to GMC for lasting the season and enduring the double/triple teams.
December 26th, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Seems to be Jackson was our leading candidate. I guess the other wide outs were flashier.
But hey, if his peers voted him in, he must deserve it.
Of course your kinda supposed to make something out of the third over all pick.
December 26th, 2012 at 11:25 pm
Hawaiian,
Correct me if i’m wrong, but I think Kuechly has the most tackles of any LB and he didn’t get in. I think David has more tackles for loss. Pro Bowl balloting is as much popularity as it is performance so i’m not surprised some deserving players were overlooked.
December 27th, 2012 at 1:59 am
@Macabee,
Yes, and Kuechly also doesn’t have many splash plays. Also, David has many many more solo tackles. Kuechly likes to jump on the pile, but David seems to bring down guys all by himself (saving big plays). But as a rookie, especially from a small market team like Tampa, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that he didn’t make it. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t make it a bunch of times throughout his career though.
December 27th, 2012 at 3:32 am
I want to congratulate Gerald McCoy and to lament the others who were close. Like I’ve said before-close doesn’t count. Another reason we want a winning season, players get noticed and rewarded.
December 27th, 2012 at 9:19 am
@Miguel El Magnifico
Yesterday I posted Gerald McCoy was a good tackle and was attacked by Miguel El Magnifico he said “I lost all credibility”.
He would listen to no reasonable argument and everytime I came up with statistics or evidence or facts he would quote Mark Twain (not sure the relavence there)
I would like to say that this proves who really lost all credibility. Wow, time for someone to get a new screen name I think or maybe Mom will take your keyboard from you for your stupidity. Miguel do us all a favor play World of Warcraft a little more and leave the talking about football to the grown-ups or people who know something or listen to reason.
Signature – Miguel said Ramdog lost credibility because he called McCoy good later that day he is named to the Pro-Bowl by his peers.
PS> I guess stats and experts do know something Miguel
December 27th, 2012 at 9:25 am
@J 2.0
I agree Martin, VJax, David and Barber are all deserving.
David especially has been an absolute beast and Pro-football focus even had him in the rookie of the year running for a little bit. Martin had a great year too but I think the O-line is finally starting to show why we really miss Nicks and Joseph. Barber has played awesome too. I think Dominik did a good job this offseason.
December 27th, 2012 at 9:44 am
This is exactly what I argued….people who really know the talent (O-linemen and coaches) could care less about stats. They know who was good and who wasn’t because they are in the game. Fans just look at stats so I guess Raheem was right…stats ARE for losers.
December 27th, 2012 at 11:20 am
“Apparently, all that chatter from Bucs opponents about McCoy getting steady penetration and being a guy you gameplan against wasn’t a steaming pile of BS.”
Well, if that’s truly the case congratulations to GMC. When I heard the selection I thought, “Shouldn’t stats count for something?” Yet, if opposing coaches and players feel that way about GMC who am I to argue with them. Congratulations to Gerald McCoy.
December 27th, 2012 at 11:21 am
I felt Lavonte David and Vincent Jackson deserved to go to the Pro Bowl as well.
December 27th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
GMC going to the Pro Bowl???? Sounds like a negotiated pick with the Buc’s front office and the NFL. Looks like they use the same voting machines as the govt.
Sounds to me like a brokered deal like MLB.
The only stat that Dini can brag about is perfect attendance. GMC is not the best player on this team, not even close. He’s not the best player on the defense. He’s not the best tackle in the NFC South.
Although at a different position Rabbi Te’o-sheim has put up superior stats with less than half the playing time
He might be the best tackle on this team only because after paying his ginormous salary, they can’t afford any depth.
I wish Thomas were here to repudiate this. His hatred of McCoy would drive him to break down his performance play by play. I tried to do that but it was so boring to watch him not do anything that I couldn’t stay awake.
December 27th, 2012 at 5:25 pm
Now your just being stubborn lol
