Butch Davis Courted By FIU?

Could a potential Davis departure open the door for Monte Kiffin to return to the Bucs?
It was a bit of a surprise to hear word of Bucs offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan interested in the now filled Boston College head coaching job. But it’s no surprise that Bucs’ covert defensive analyst/quarterback scout Butch Davis is a target of a college program.
Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel is reporting today that Davis is the prime target for the head job at Florida International University.
Whether FIU has the cash it would take to hire Davis, and whether he’d want to coach in the shadow of his old stomping grounds in Coral Gables, is a mystery.
Joe wonders whether a Davis departure could open the door for Monte Kiffin’s return to the Bucs in a similar capacity as a defensive advisor.
Greg Schiano has talked numerous times about how he used to attend Bucs training camp practices and took detailed notes on how Kiffin ran his defense. Schiano is open about his admiration for Kiffin, and given that Kiffin remains a Pinellas County resident, they might be a great fit.

I don’t care what capacity Monte would be back in, I would love to have him back. I’m totally not sold on Sheridcan as DC and playcaller. If we could get Monte in in an advisor type role, then bring in another guy familiar with the style Monte employed—Charger DB coach Ron Meeks—to be the new DC, I think this team could really turn its act around against the pass.
Kiffin is one of the greatest assistant coache’s in NFL history, but what Meeks did in Indianapolis was equally impressive. Despite the Colts loading up their draft picks and cash on the offensive side of the ball, Meeks’ Colts managed to lead the league in scoring defense once, and top 10 in scoring defense 5 times in 8 seasons. That’s an impressive resume. He’s out there, he’s available, he should have been the choice in 2009 over Jim Bates… it’s time to make things right.

Nostalgically I love the idea of bringing Monte back into the fold. But realistically, he’s 72 years old and I wonder if the pro game has passed him by. He revolutionized the way teams played D around the league, but it’s been well documented how outdated the old Tampa 2 is. Not to say that he hasn’t kept up with the times, but I don’t think it would be sensible to expect him to make much of an impact… Side point: if this happens does that mean the return of ‘Kiffin’s Corner’ on Fox 13?!?! Please say yes, that used to be a highlight of my week! haha

please no. Kiffin was great, but his time passed. His defense that last year was horrible…. bad enough that it got chucky fired. and his tampa 2 was TORCHED every time we faced good passing teams….and their are about three times as many good passing teams now as there were back then. he WAS great, but please leave it at that.

You guys don’t know squat about what you’re talking about. The Tampa-2 was NEVER scorched against great passing teams. It was built to stop the great passing teams.
If it is so old and outdated, then why are the Bears using it to consistently be in the top 5 in defense?
It is a great defense. The Buc defense of 02 set the all-time mark for opponent’s passing efficiency (it was under 50)… does that sound like a defense that could be passed on? Just ask AFC MVP of that year, Rich Gannon, or Donovan McNabb how easy the Tampa-2 was to pass on.
You guys don’t know what you’re talking about. If anything it got torched by physical teams that ran the ball well.

Sullivan should at least act like he is interested.That could garner a more lucrative and maybe even longer contract when people show interest in Sullivan and vise versa.Your usually worth more when more than one team wants you.Whether he was truly interested who knows but that’s just smart business.I cant imagine he would want to go anywhere after just one year as an OC.Now that wouldn’t be smart.IMO. I hope he signs a long term contract.

Kiffin is 72 years old, dont think it would be the smartest move to bring him back but if he ends up a Buc again I wont complain.

Monte “Quitter” Kiffin is leaving the collegiate ranks after getting spanked repeatedly by the likes of Chip Kelly (63 points) and having no answer at all despite having the best paid athletes in the Pac 10.
10 years ago when the Bucs were the only Tampa 2 defense, it was effective. When he had Hall of Fame personnel, it was effective. Kiffin is old, senile and should check into a nursing home.
We can thank Kiffin for destroying the greatest Buc team in history and when he convinced the Glazers to allow him to choose 1st in the NFL draft, he selected Gaines Adams, one of the worst busts in NFL history.
I am concerned that Butch Davis will leave the Bucs. I have a sneaking suspicion that he was behind the bye week intervention that got the Buc train back on the right track. I have a feeling that the Little General is just a figurehead that was interfering with the successful progress of a team 4 years into a major rebuild. Someone behind the scenes is a NFL genius and it’s certainly not Schiano.

WTF are you talking about? We played Manning TWICE. Once in 2003 in which the Bucs held him in check for 3 quarters and then he discovered Tim Wansley was terrible, and then in 2007 when the defensive personnel and entire team was down. In both games his rating was just a tad over 100, but still those teams did better than they did against Peyton’s Broncos… BTW…. Peyton has burned all teams plenty of times. Two games of 101 rating isn’t exactly killing it when we’re talking Peyton Manning.
And for the record, see what Manning did against the Bears in the Super Bowl, not very impressive. That defense was one of the 3 strongest in the league for a 10 year period, it only stopped being among the best because Gruden came in and the team quit investing its money and draft choices in the front 7.
Go over to a Bears website and argue that the Tampa-2 is outdated. That defense carries that otherwise horrible team.

Miguel, you are as stupid as you are narcissistic.
The Tampa 2 was run and run successfully for many teams around the 2002 team. Lovie Smith had departed the Bucs and parlayed his success in St. Louis into a head coaching position. Herm Edwards did the same, his problem with the Jets wasn’t the defense.
Two teams currently run the Tampa-2, Chicago and Minnesota.
You’re bashing Kiffin for his struggles in college has less to do with the T-2 and more to do with Chip Kelly and Lane Kiffin’s focus of building that team.
At 72, Kiffin is only a few years older than Tom Coughlin and Marv Levy (was) when they were fresh off appearances in Super Bowls.
The only person around here that is senile is you, from sniffing your own crap while trying to convince everybody it smells like roses. You obviously know nothing of Kiffin, Schiano, Butch Davis, the inner workings of the Buccaneers, or football in general.
