Talib Trade Says Winning Isn’t Everything
November 1st, 2012Nearly every week the leader of the New Schiano Order says all the moves he makes and will make are about winning the next football game.
It’s a commentary Greg Schiano puts out there many different ways.
So for Joe, today’s trade of Aqib Talib is especially interesting. It’s a deal that clearly does not make the New Schiano Order Bucs more likely to win at home against San Diego on Nov. 11, a game Talib would have been ready to play after returning from his substance-abuse suspension, and a game that might be critical for the playoff hunt.
No, the Bucs won’t be better in 10 days without Talib.
Ditching Talib was not about winning; it was about the third core tenet of the New Schiano Order: accountability, as in “trust, belief and accountability.”
For whatever reason, in the case of Talib Schiano and rockstar general manager Mark Dominik believed that upholding the new Buccaneer Way was more important than a W.
Some fans might have a big problem with that. But Joe’s all good.

I think you win more with a player you can depend on….Character does matter…its time we get back to the guys like Lynch and Brooks, and stay away from guys like Stevens and talib

A tenet is a principle.
A tenant is a renter.

Although he’s not elite, the Pats are getting a much better player than what they got in Haynesworth, Ochocinco or would’ve with Winslow. He’s talented and still in his prime. His work ethic has dramatically improved this year and so has his off-field behavior. He’s a model teammate. This is a definite upgrade for the Pats secondary without a doubt.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:24 pm
Joe, I commented on the original post of Talib’s adderall use saying why not trade him. You said suspended players couldn’t be traded, any clarification on that now that he’s being shipped off?
I seemed to be the only person advocating a trade, but that was before Wright got busted for the same thing. I can imagine Biggers and Johnson stepping into starting roles, but they aren’t the same caliber as Aqib or Wright.
We’ll definitely be looking at corners in the draft. Double down again?
November 1st, 2012 at 5:28 pm
As long as everyone does their job this team can still win games. As you put in your previous post we have won more games WITHOUT him. I know he is talented but he was a lm embarrassment to the team. He needed to go
November 1st, 2012 at 5:30 pm
What the…..??? Joe, you just got through posting an article saying the Buc’s won’t miss Talib and that we won without him and now you post one saying that the loss of Talib makes us more prone to lose?? Are YOU on Adderal??
November 1st, 2012 at 5:34 pm
Sayonara, Talib! Can’t believe we kept you this long. Good luck trying to pull your BS working for Belicheat.
I’m starting to salivate thinking of our first round CB in the 2013 draft.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:36 pm
Bucs now have 8 picks in 7 rds……# rock star !
November 1st, 2012 at 5:37 pm
Didn’t we pick up a cb from somewhere yesturday?
November 1st, 2012 at 5:37 pm
Spellcheck does that to me every time. Gotta watch out for the spelling Nazis jjoe.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:38 pm
While trading Talib doesn’t make us a better team this year, it doesn’t make us a worse team either.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:39 pm
I think I just heard evey taxi-cab driver in Tampa breathe a huge sigh of relief!
November 1st, 2012 at 5:41 pm
this is the nfl, winning is everything!!!!!
November 1st, 2012 at 5:43 pm
Joe here,
@Bobby – There is a difference you’re not seeing. No. the Bucs won’t miss Talib in the sense that he was overrated and they won without him. But they are not a better team in 10 days without him. No. The backups aren’t as good as Talib, which makes it clear that Schiano cares more about accountability. … It’s a subtle difference but should be very clear.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:43 pm
I wish Talib the best if luck. I hope he does well he was my favorite Bucs player.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:50 pm
JRock, I think Joe said the Bucs could not “cut” Talib while suspended…or that’s what he might have meant anyway.

…He’s a model teammate…
.
A model teammate is a player who can be count on not to do something stupid to get suspended. Talib IS NOT a model teammate.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:51 pm
JOE,
I was wondering…is there still time left before the trade deadline? Could we see the 4th rounder involved in another trade?
November 1st, 2012 at 5:53 pm
Looks like Leonard Johnson just won himself a starting role? #cautiousoptimism
November 1st, 2012 at 5:54 pm
NSO has always said whatever makes the team better, whatever is in the best interest of the team.
Getting rid of Talib IS in the best interest of the team AND we got a 4th rounder for it when we would have received nothing if he was resigned or released.
Good move.
November 1st, 2012 at 5:55 pm
*wasn’t resigned or was released
November 1st, 2012 at 5:55 pm
Bobby, I’m with you. Joe, whatever subtle difference you claim is out there, isn’t very clear at all.
How can you claim the absence of a guy who is overrated and who’s team wins more often without him than with him, causes the team to be worse without him?
How will the team be any different in 10 days than it has the last 3 weeks? Is the talent level diminished? I guess sure if that’s what you want to argue. But a team isn’t all about talent. A team is a collection of people working towards 1 goal. In that sense, YES the team is BETTER WITHOUT HIM.
The Joe’s should start conferring with one another before they post contradicting posts and have to talk their way out of it.
November 1st, 2012 at 6:06 pm
While a lot of Buc fans are elated with this trade, they aren’t the only ones. Reading comments from PFT, the Pat’s fans think we got robbed and this was the missing piece to their SB run. Perspective depends on where you’re standing!
November 1st, 2012 at 6:24 pm
Only in Tampa can a player repeatedly screw up and get traded to a super bowl contender…
November 1st, 2012 at 6:27 pm
The cab drivers in New England are nothing like the Cab drivers in the TB area. Having grown up in New England I can confidently state if he sucker punches a Cabby there, they’ll find his broken body in an alleyway.
November 1st, 2012 at 6:40 pm
@Macabee
That’s just goes to show that Pats fans don’t watch Bucs games or keep up with our players. Talib is still due for 2 or 3 more terrible games and his yearly hamstring strain. Do you think Talib, with all his baggage, the way he gets toasted against #1 receivers & the fact that he’s a FA after this season, was worth more than a 6th or 7th rounder? I think we got a steal.
November 1st, 2012 at 6:40 pm
@Drew, many Boston Cabbies run on Adderall, and other stimulants. Talib will want to be nice to them
November 1st, 2012 at 6:55 pm
Now that Talib is gone, can we expect that Wright will not appeal his suspension, and that it’ll start immediately? There was talk that Wright would appeal until Talib was back so there weren’t two starting CBs suspended simultaneously, but this trade eliminates all of that finagling.
November 1st, 2012 at 6:56 pm
Dom can now use that 4th round pick to trade back into 1st or 2nd round. Good job Dom, Glad he’s gone. Very overrated player.
November 1st, 2012 at 7:01 pm
I am at a loss on how this is a good deal for the bucs? Was he overrated? Yes but he was also respected. If we have the worst pass defense now, I guess we can’t get much worse. Is this the logic? And to give up a player and a pick to her only a 4th? Talib will be in playoffs and Super Bowl hunt and bucs will be a high draft pick again because of trying to prove a point. The reality is that the bucs were so bad in general offense and pass defense because of piss poor play calling and coach Schiano not letting the team play and trying to force the run with Martin and constant DB blitzs which got the secondary burned, not to mention the ridiculous antics against the victory formation. Now he lets them do what they get paid to do and they are a much better team. If our starting corner tandem in a passing league is Biggers and McDonald. We have pretty much just packed it in for next year. This hurts the team and the chances to win, and especially with Wright gone now, you can’t make this move. Character flaw or not.
November 1st, 2012 at 7:35 pm
If Talib could have ever put it all together he could have been an All-Pro. As it stands, he’s only had one season that I can remember where he ever had better than #2 CB production and he ended up on IR for a quarter of that season. I hope he realizes his potential at some point, but until then I’ll gladly take the 4th round pick for a player that was most likely going to walk in the offseason.
Milliner or Banks in round 1.
November 1st, 2012 at 7:50 pm
Another wasted 1st round pick.
November 1st, 2012 at 8:24 pm
These guys won’t miss him…..take the rose colored glasses off and realize that at the end of the day, they’re playing for, maybe, 8&8 this year. Throw out the trash, evaluate the rest of the roster, and stockpile as many picks as possible. Talib was more ‘focused & disciplined’ because it was a contract year and apparantly, adderall. Yeah, I’m a season tix holder and tired of it too, but at some point the team has to define what they’re about….the title of the post says it all…Good move……Go Bucs!!
November 1st, 2012 at 8:26 pm
Very good move, Rock Star just traded the last 8 games with Talib (couldn’t re-sign him after the current suspension) for a likely top 100 pick in a draft deep at corner and DT. Will it help when the last 7 games, no it makes it harder. But the day after the last game it should yield multiple years of benefit. And just think if Dominik uses this 4th rounder like he did last year.
November 1st, 2012 at 8:37 pm
@KT what if someone steps up big time. What if they saw something in practice that they can do to help out this pass d. Talib is an embarrassment. Why would you want him representing your team. If you haven’t notice WE WIN WITHOUT HIM. Are we better talent wise. NO! But just because we traded a cancer doesn’t mean the team packed it in.
November 1st, 2012 at 8:43 pm
Admin – where’s my comment?
No clue. Could be on your end. –Joe
November 1st, 2012 at 9:10 pm
No chance of competing in our division now. For ALL the Talib haters who wanted him gone so bad. You just wait and see whats in store and please save your tears and complaints about how we are losing games. You CAN’T win with terrible CB’s, you can’t even compete just wait lol
November 1st, 2012 at 9:39 pm
Joe here.
@BigPictureGuy – Sorry you have trouble with reading comprehension. Can’t help you with that. Is it such a wild concept to consider a guy overrated and note that his team wins more without him while still acknowledging that a GM and head coach that publicly crave cornerback depth just made a move that kills that depth, depletes the overall talent core and won’t help them win on Nov. 11? It’s really not that tough to understand. Additionally, these posts were independent of each other, not a combination of takes in one story. They stand on their own and complement each other and should be easy to understand. –Joe
November 1st, 2012 at 10:14 pm
This does the make the Bucs a better team in 10 days and from here on out. Talib has made a few splash plays but he got burned time after time for big plays and touchdowns. If on many of those plays, including the Giants, Johnson or someone else was in at CB, a play might have been made to prevent a TD. I will definitely take my chances without that THUG POS. Good riddance and hope he does well in NE, but I for one am elated he’s gone………. for good.
Seeya Punk Bitch Thug.
November 1st, 2012 at 10:16 pm
The Dom will no doubt use this pick to move up in the first round of the 2013′ Draft to nab his guy again. I love this move and thought getting a 7’th round pick was about the value Aqib(Seeya)Talib.
November 1st, 2012 at 11:05 pm
I for one will miss Talib and can’t wait for his next career(s) doing cartoon voice overs and writing books.
I will buy a copy of his tell all book when its published. (Bucked Over!) (Get the Buc out of here)?
Look out, Peter Gent!

Raphael
7+1 usually equals 8…. Rockstar!
Talib will win a ring and become a cornerstone of the Pats improving defense
November 2nd, 2012 at 8:03 am
TBA-Talib, Goodbye And don’t let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.
November 2nd, 2012 at 12:02 pm
Anybody who looks at this move and is not a homer for either side has to realize that it could be a great move for both teams but that the Pats are assuming all the risk here.
The Bucs got more then we were getting when we walk away at the end of the season. On the Pats side Talib will by default become NE’s best corner. At the end of the day in order for the trade to be worth it to the Pats he has to play well and they need to re sign him. 7 games of mediocrity is not worth a 4th rounder in anybodies books.
