What Was With The Time Management?

OK, so Joe isn’t Paul Brown. OK, fine. But it doesn’t take a clockmaker to figure out there was something strange going on in the final moments of the first half of today’s Bucs win against the Chiefs.
When Brady Quinn passed to Shaun Draughn on third down for a modest gain, there was 1:55 left in the half and the Chiefs lined up to punt just inside Bucs territory.
Now’s the time to call a timeout for the Bucs, right? Have a modicum of time to perhaps run a two-minute offense and maybe get a score, right? At the time, the Bucs held a slim four-point lead at 7-3.
But no, Bucs coach Greg Schiano did not call a timeout, instead, watching precious seconds tick off the clock. The clock finally stopped when the Chiefs were hit with a delay of game penalty.
On first down after taking over at their own one-yard line, the Bucs call for a run, and then a timeout. After a timeout, the Bucs run the ball again.
What? Call a timeout to set up a run? Why?
Naturally after the second run, it was the Chiefs, not the Bucs, who were calling timeouts.
It just seemed strange to Joe.

But we did call timeouts in the second half before we punted, huh. Have not been impressed with game management overall, use of timeouts, which if you go back and look, have produced nothing offensively or defensively.

Like many Rutgers fans said after we hired Schiano, Greg does not seem like a good gameday coach. But he is good at leading a program/franchise, preparing them and representing them in the community.
And do not give me this rookie coach BS (post #1). Raheem never mismanaged time and he was a rookie HC. Schiano is a 12 yr vet as a HC, clock management should not be an issue to him at all.

I do have an explanation. I noticed something unusual about the head coach. He lost the little notebook that he collects fines with. That means his head was actually into the game.
I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a good thing just that he was actually mentally involved in the game.
I watched the Rutger’s game on Saturday and had a good laugh, the Little General left a clone behind, same bad haircut and the same little fine book.

Funny how Miguel disappears after a convincing 38-10 victory! It’s also funny how so many fans can still complain no matter how well the team plays. AMAZING!

I haven’t complained about anything. A win is a win, it’s all good.
There was a LGB sighting this afternoon…..good.
They opened up the playbook………………..good.
They used their $11m receiver (2TD’s)…….good.
They played great defense……………………good.

They scored 31 points in the 2nd half……….good.
Dougie played well………………………………good.

We may be out of the Geno lottery………….good.
Freeman only threw one pick…………………good.
Schiano skipped his halftime siesta………….good.
Mike Williams played very well……………….good.
There was a Tiquan Haircut sighting…………good.
All in all I would have to say Magnifico! It’s almost like they’ve been reading my posts.

Keep those idiotic mindless rants coming. You proved once again how clueless you are.. We were much better conditioned, coached, and mentally prepared today. Schiano knows what he is doing. Stop bashing him and enjoy the results of good coaching, good preparation, and good execution. Go Bucs!

I’ve heard of head coaches delegating time management to one of his assistants. Maybe Schiano could delegate this to the defensive coordinator or special teams coach?

They let the clock run down because they knew there was a good chance they’d get pinned deep. You don’t want to save clock for your opponent in that situation. They were running it to be safe with the ball deep in their own zone with the hopes of breaking a big one. Pretty standard football if you ask me.

@Adam. I agree with what your saying and we did get pinned deep. Not just that, what if the Chiefs decided to go for it on 4th down (high unlikely) we just helped them. Most people in my section including me where like call timeout!

Not to call timeout with 1:55 on the clock is inexcusable. To call timeout after we get the ball in between two runs is pure football stupidity. Either we are going to run the 2 minute offense or we are not. How many teams have gone 90+ yards in 2 minutes and put points on the board?

I think it was a little peculiar, but not crazy. I think he was comfortable going into the half with a lead, knowing you are getting the ball back to start the third. I would guess once they picked up that first down, they were thinking they could call a timeout to make the Chiefs think they were going to start throwing the ball down the field, so then maybe they could surprise them and bust out a long run. Had KC had the ball deep in their own territory, I’m sure the situation would have been different.

The KC punter was their best player.perfect pootch punt’s all day.If you get pinned deep with 1:50 it’s not a good situation.If you get it on the 20 still not the best situation.Up point’s,controliing the game they played it smart.Are you sure you want to punt deep in our end.Dez turned that return into fatal point’s in dallas plus the TD we gave up today on a punt block.

I think Schiano should become the special teams coach much like Urban Meyer at Florida. Ronde says the Little General thinks he’s a ST Savant.
He should avoid interfering with the OC and DC especially when it comes to clock management where he has no clue. Some one keeps dialing up the same safety blitzes in pressure situations like the end of the Skins game. I believe that loss was on Schiano.
