Chiefs Want A “Street Fight”

Joe wonders whether Greg Schiano was a bit jealous today watching the Chiefs lose 9-6 to the Ravens this afternoon.
The Chiefs pounded the ball relentlessly and successfully — something Schiano yearns to do — and simply needed Matt Cassell to protect the football and make some basic plays. Cassell couldn’t get it done, but the Chiefs did pick up confidence grinding out time of possession and moving the sticks on a top defense like the Ravens’.
Kansas City offensive lineman Eric Winston was excited after the game, telling the Kansas City Starhow the Chiefs need to maul defenses on the ground like that and rack up 50 carries every week.
“I’ve never seen a team come out there and do what we did to them,’’ Winston said. “I’ve never seen somebody come out and run the ball like we did on them today, and that had better roll over. This has to be us every game. This has got to be us, a street fight every game. I told everybody in this locker room it’s got to be a street fight every game. This is who we are, this is who we need to be, this is Kansas City and we need to be a bunch of brawlers.
“If we have to run it 50 times and the fans boo because we ran it on third and 7, oh well. We’re going to be a bunch of brawlers . . . we’re not going to turn the ball over anymore and we’re going to get some wins.’’
Charles rushed 30 times for 140 yards and caught three passes for 21 yards. He got the ball a total of 39 times in the overtime win against the Saints.
While the Chiefs are a bad team with no legitimate quarterback in sight, they will make for an interesting opponent Sunday in Tampa.
There’s little doubt that Jamaal Charles and his offensive line can be dominant at times.
The Bucs will know what’s coming Sunday. The question is whether they can stop it like they did in Weeks 1-3 this season, or will they get gutted and gashed like they did against the Redskins.

Clock control comes from the run, but points come from the passing game.

It’s going to be hard to pound the ball this year with a beat up o-line and a rookie running back. I’d like to see some play calling to take the pressure off this group.

I agree 1976buc, I think the should pass to set up the run they have the offence to do that,look at all their weapons Jackson,Wiliams,Clark,and some up and comers I think in Benn ect.I also think they should throw to Blount on quick slants so he has a head of steam already and is very hard to bring down.Does anyone agree.

We can definitely do some things to provide relief to the o-line. Freeman seems over coached and if he can get the green light to do what comes natural for him we have some real talent in our receivers. Blount on a quick slant would probably draw one on one coverage with a LB so you would have to be choosy and try to get DE coverage on him. I’d like to see some screens and swing passes out of the backfield to slow the rush and keep db’s honest.

I’m worried about this game. The Giants are ranked 22 in rushing, Dallas is 29th. The panthers are 11th but that’s largely due to padding their stats against the terrible saints D with over 200 yards rushing. The skins are ranked 2nd and Alfred Morris racked up 113 yards on us. Chiefs are ranked #1. Now looking at all that, I would say that are great rush defense may be a mirage. We will find out but like I said, I am worried, especially if our offense comes out flat again.

We will need a big game from Foster and David I think. The good news is Brady Quinn is a pretty bad QB so they shouldn’t be able to throw on us. But if they can run successfully it won’t matter. It will be interesting to see how good the run defense actually is.

I think the “if we have to run the ball 50 times” is a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Did I hear Cassell was hurt today? They may get the starter the fans have wanted all year. It may be time to find out who Brady Quinn really is. I’m ready to find out who Josh Freeman is and this might be a good game for both teams to get answers.

This Buc team is not a win now team. At least the coaches don’t appear to be calling plays that way. Let’s experiment and see what works.

I like your optimism Chris. I hope youre right but like 1976buc said, our play calling is pretty strange and there are still question marks all over this team due to inconsistent play. I wouldnt bet for or against this team right now. And if Alfred Morris can break 100 on us I wonder what Jamal Charles will do.

We won’t be that lucky Drew haha. If Free doesn’t show up this season we will most likely move on but I don’t see us having the first pick. Too many other worse teams. Carolina, Cleveland, maybe KC and Oakland and a few others. No way w have the worse record in the league.

I’m a Freeman believer. Great clutch quarterback with a huge arm. Don’t run him out of town yet. He doesn’t have much say when it comes to what he can do out there. The losses have come from the defense in the last 3 games. The offense wasn’t great (they did have some badass moments), but it was good enough to win the game. All the D had to do was keep em back. Once the D learns how to close out the game, we are going places.

I disagree shuthebucup. The fact that the offense forced the defense to be on the field the first half against the redskins is one of the big reasons they gave up so many points early on. If the offense could have sustained some drives and gave he d a break we would have had a decent shot.
There is no way you could seriously blame the d for the Dallas game. That was all on the offense.
As for the giants game I can see the argument that it was the defenses fault but if you recall the game, the only time the offense produced any points was after the d served them up great field position off of a turnover. The offense was still stale and didn’t really show up until the last two drives of the game.
If anything the defense is what is keeping us in games and the only game I can see putting the blame on the d is maybe the giants game and that was a combined losing effort offensively and defensively. Also the one win we have was mostly due to our d.

once our offense gets it going we will win a lot of games. when thats going to happen, however, is anyone’s guess.

As for Free, at the beginning of the season I still held faith in him. I hav since stop thinking about whether or not he can be a successful starter in Tampa. It’s put up or shut up either way for him. I guarantee Schiano won’t be hitching his coaching career wagon to Freeman if he continues to play like he has. Free gets the rest of the year to show what he’s got and if he doesn’t improve or at the very least stop regressing he’s done and we will be bringing in his replacement. I don’t see any other likely option as far as he goes.

Let’s be fair. Sure, Freeman could have played better in the Redskins game, but so could a lot of star players on the team. The game I saw we were leading 22-21 with 1:42 left on the clock and the Redskins ball on their own 33. And if you noticed Josh Freeman was sitting on the bench. Now whatever happened up to that point was academic. Freeman had done his part – he had given us the lead. It was now up to the coach’s defensive scheme and the execution of that plan by the defense to stop a rookie QB whose greatest weapon is his legs. They failed! Sheridan admitted as much in his presser.
Freeman might have done more in the 1st half to prevent having to expose a suspect defensive call of an ineffective prevent defense against an exceptional running QB. But let’s be clear – Freeman did not lose that game. You need to blame somebody else for that one!

I disagree. Freeman was a large part of that loss. Players have to perform all game long. The biggest issue with Free is that he is inconsistent. His performance swings from Joey Harrington to Brett Favre depending on the quarter. As you admitted he looked like complete crap the whole first half. He threw an early pick that led to a TD. Not saying Freeman was the sole issue but he didn’t do his job well by any means. 2 quarters of good play doesn’t cut it and we will never win if he can’t figure out how to put together at least 4 quarters of moderately decent play.

Let’s also not forgEt that Washington has a top 10 offense. The gain a lot of yards and score a lot of points. Tampa held them to far less than their average. But we failed to outscore their average points allowed. We couldn’t take advantage of their week defense. Was our defense to blame? Sure. Was Freeman to blame as well? Yep. And he hasn’t looked good all year. I can’t look at one game and say Freeman played well for more than 1 half at most. Against Carolina he only showed up for the first quarter. Againstthe giants it was the 4th quarter. He didn’t show up at all against Dallas. And he played his worst football I have ever seen him play in the first half against the Redskins.

Well of course. How often do coaches toss the blame solely on their team. And again I agree that whoever is calling plays on defense needs to use more discretion when blitzing during two minute offenses but I just can’t overlook the fact that out of 16 quarters played this season, we have gotten only 4 good quarters out of Freeman. Tough to win when you don’t know if the leader of the offense is going to perform at an acceptable level.
Just look at the comments from ex players and analysts, no one is very high n Freeman right ow outside the Tampa organization and I assume that they are only talking Jim up because it’s in their best interests. He’s being described as skittish, confused, mechanically sub par, not being able to grasp the mental side of the game etc. He’s getting hammered and unless he can get to a point where he is playing at least consistently serviceable I don’t see him holding onto his job next year. Schaino won’t hang his coaching career on a completely inconsistent player like that.

Our D will stop their run game. Washington had a running QB which was an X factor KC doesn’t have. We have been beaten by the pass…not the run.

One thing people tend to forget is that Dallas and Giants have a good QB so they can afford a weak running game. Panthers and Redskins have a running QB which can inflate the rushing stats, plus it helps the running game when there is 3 people in the backfield that can take off running. Kansas has just Jamaal Charles and Dewayne Bowe on offense if they can contain them it will be a good game.

Some KC Chiefs fans actually cheered Cassell’s injury.
Rutgers is off to their best season ever, so after a few years of #1 overall picks, we send the Little General on his way and then, the Bucs will be alright.
In 2006 Greg changed the football world by creating the original phrase, “Keep choppin.” Maybe, he can do that here.
Did you know that Schiano was the highest paid New Jersey public employee? The Garden State is still grumbling about that oddity, he was 28-48 lifetime in the Big East.
It’s too darn bad that the Bucs can’t be invited to some lower tier bowl game like the New Era Pinstripe Bowl or the Papa John’s Two For One Pizza.Com Bowl, we might actually win one.
Besides possibly setting the All-time NCAA Touchdown Per Season Record (61), Eugene Smith won a oratorical contest for reciting the works of the poet, Langston Hughes. He’s also a competitive chess player and a perfectionist. Much too smart for the Tampa Bay offensive non-scheme.
He currently has 24 TD’s to 0 ints. He would never say it himself but his receivers dropped a couple sure TD passes on Saturday. Dropping his TD average per game below 5.
Mark Dominik will be able to command a king’s ransom for this highly sought draft pick. Maybe some desperate team that wants to win now will offer a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th to move up a spot or two. That’s the growing trend.

If Philly’s defence held the Steeler’s offence late in that game yesterday.Vick would be 4-1 while turning the ball over what 3 times a game.Point being the only thing that matter’s is what you do in the clutch .This is why I don’t put much stock in profootballfocus they have deemed Barron the second worst safety in pass coverage.I think he has 5 passes breakup’s.But I remember two of those being huge 4th quarter play’s.The play he made on Lafell late in the panther game and that batdown on Bennett late in the cowboy’s game.I don’t give a rats #?$ about stat’s just win’s.
