When thinking of the top “what-ifs” in Bucs history, Joe quickly thinks of the following:
What if Ricky Bell stayed healthy?
What if Hugh Culverhouse didn’t drive Doug Williams to the USFL?
What if the Bucs kept Steve Young?
What if George Steinbrenner outbid Malcolm Glazer?
What if Chucky realized what he had in Thomas Jones?
What if officials didn’t steal Kellen Winslow’s TD against Detroit in 2010?
But one thing Joe never would have considered is what would have happened if the Bucs’ first-round pick in 1990, Keith McCants, was allowed to play linebacker instead of defensive end?
Well, McCants told Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski and Gary Shelton on 98.7 FM this week that he would have certainly had the impact of a Ray Lewis or Junior Seau.
McCants, a legendary member of the Crimson Tide whose sad story of descending into poverty, severe depression and drugs and has been well documented, makes an interesting Xs and Os case. Listen to the entire interview below.

Gary Shelton as…Richard Head. 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. I wish McCants all the best…in retrospect, what a horrible decision to put him on the d-line.

lol. keep beating that horse of the officials taking away the Win-slow TD. That was a push off that Micheal Irving would have been proud of.

I don’t know if the bucs would have had very many losing seasons if Steinbrenner would have bought them. Could imagine the Yankees as a football team. I know there is a salary cap but the drive to always be the best would have made for an excellent bucs team every year. We would never have had the conversation about being cheap with Steinbrenner.

News flash: So did 25 others teams in that 96 draft.
I don’t think we missed out on Ray Lewis, because we already had our man Brooks at LB and I’m not so sure he would have been able to excel in the original Tampa-2 scheme.
On another note, I will say we were lucky that the other 31 teams missed out on Mike Alstott and we were able to draft him in the second round that year.

BTW if we missed out on anybody in that 1st rnd of that 96 draft it was Eddie George, Eddie Kenninson, or Eric Moulds!

2007 draft bothers me. First mised out on CJ, then didn’t draft Willis. Lots of pro bowl players in that draft in several positions. Oh well, hind sight.
I think the 2012 draft, we will look back as the draft that jump started our franchise again!

@ Oar & JBUC – You obviously didn’t read or listen. Doh!!

BucRealist – BS- it was a horrible call on Winslow. The NFL sent an apology letter to the Bucs the following week saying the call was wrong.
OAR – I think the interview wasn’t so much about the ’96 draft as McCants saying he would have been a Ray Lewis type player if he’d stayed at linebacker.

It’s a “what if” story, so there is the correlation Vic.

BWAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Vic and BucsNorth
No, I didn’t listen, but I still stand by both of my comments about that 96 draft!

What if our receiver had held on to that perfect pass from Chris Simms in the Redskin playoff game?
Or if King had finished off that last drive in 99 vs. Rams?
Or if caddy hadnt got hurt in second half vs. raiders in 08?
Or if we had kept Doug Williams?
No point to these, but I had to vent………..
September 28th, 2012 at 3:26 pm
And what if Joe hadnt gotten drunk one night and started Joebucsfan.com?

Here in Florida, what if the sand and palm trees were beer and wings…. we’d all be happy!

What if Keith McCants wasnt a crackhead loser?? Shut up you had your 15 minutes of fame. Hitchhikinng with 2 crack whores is how you will be remembered. Hows Dexter Manley doing?? Do we want his opinion too???

I was drooling over McCants pre-draft. Very highly rated by the National Combine & IIRC, BLESTO.

The years of drug use are showing their affects on McCants. He is delusional. He was overrated and on a great Alabama TEAM!

Really when you see that list………..the Bucs could’ve easily been the opposite of the losing team they were for 14 years if they just had competent people running the team. It’s very sad and disappointing.
